Saturday
Jane slept in, only waking when Angela came in without knocking, cooking up a big breakfast. Jane came out of her bedroom, rubbing her eyes.
"You need to eat," Angela said sternly. "Frankie said he didn't see you at the cafe all week.
"Yeah, well, Frankie's a little snitch isn't he?" Jane said, forking a pancake into her mouth. Angela rolled her eyes and cutting up the rest of the pancakes for Jane.
"How was the first week back?"
"Not bad. My new partner's nice - you'd like him. But the Medical Examiner - god!"
"I saw her in a magazine - she's so glamourous. What's she like?"
"Cold, aloof, angry."
"What did you do to her?" Angela asked, and Jane sighed.
"I spilled her coffee on her," Jane said. "She hates me."
"Well, make it up to her! She's one of the most important people in the precinct."
"Yeah, I will, Ma. She's not making it easy though. Thanks for the pancakes." Jane looked over at her mother - so often angry and critical - and knew she was there out of love and concern. She put her arm around her shoulders and kissed her forehead. "Thanks," she said again, softer. "I had a good week."
Jane went for a run. It was her favourite part of the day, getting some exercise, paying attention to the neighbourhood, checking out other runners.
Like that man over there, with those round calf muscles, firm biceps in a muscle tee.
Or that one there, spindly but not even slightly winded. Jane gave him a nod - their paths often crossed.
And that blonde up ahead with the great ass, those tight yoga pants not leaving much to the imagination. Jane looked away only because she nearly crashed into a street light. The runner up ahead stopped, hands on knees, and Jane jogged past.
"Detective Rizzoli?" Jane heard, and groaned as she turned around.
"Doctor Isles," Jane said, surprised.
"I didn't know you ran," Doctor Isles said, and Jane came closer, wiping sweat from her face. Jane had only ever seen Doctor Isles in makeup and high fashion, but in her workout clothes and barefaced she was still stunning. And Jane had been checking out her ass! It was a lot nicer when Jane hadn't known it was attached to Doctor Isles.
"Yeah, well, there's a lot you don't know about me. Bye," Jane said, taking off again, a little surprised to hear the slap of rubber on concrete alongside her.
"You have a good stride," Doctor Isles said. "Long bones and good muscular control." Jane snorted.
"This was about the only thing I could do for myself," Jane said, regretting it instantly.
"I'm heading off here," Doctor Isles pointed to a side street. "It wasn't unpleasant to see you."
"Likewise, I'm sure," Jane said sarcastically as Maura turned off. It was better than being snubbed but not by much. And technically she had complimented Jane's running form, which given Doctor Isles' own running form was high praise. Jane shook her head and took the turn that made her usual circuit. She'd heard that Doctor Isles lived in one of the fancy suburbs, in a detached house. It made Jane wonder what she'd been doing here.
