I DREAM OF RAINBOWS

Bella looked at her dad and gave him a watery smile as she rose and hugged him with a whispered, "Thank you."

CHAPTER 27: EMMETT TO THE RESCUE

"Any time, kid, any time." Charlie muttered as Bella was giving him a tight hug. She failed to see the quiet smile and the glistening of water in the corners of his eyes as she was hugging her father. Charlie missed his daughter dearly and was always happy when she came home for a visit, no matter how long or short the visit might be. Her presence made his day lighter and brighter, it seemed to lift his spirits and brought excitement into his life since his job, although, he loves his job and lives in the small town of Forks, it was still more routine and was definitely unexciting.

Father and daughter separated to go their own way, he back to work and her to go home to unpack and see about getting some dinner ready for them both.

Bella was already starting to feel freer and lighter. She realized that her mood had shifted from frustration and anger to that of freedom and happiness. It never failed to amaze her, even though she wouldn't be happy to stay permanently in her hometown, how a visit home for a one on one talk with her father would help to eliminate the stress that she felt building up inside of her. His down to earth attitude just had a way of calming her and giving her the breath of fresh air, mentally and emotionally, that she needed from time to time.

So, with the music blaring at a moderate volume, Bella drove home to see what Charlie had in the pantry and fridge that she could use to make dinner. She was hoping that she wouldn't have to make a trip to buy groceries because she wasn't ready to announce her arrival into Forks to the world just yet. Bella was hoping for a bit of privacy for a day or two before word got out. Of course, she wasn't thinking about everyone at the police station that had seen her, that seemed to have slipped her mind.

Jasper was still talking quietly with his parents, trying to figure exactly how to explain the circumstances to Emmett, when his phone rings once again. He was afraid of who might be calling this time, Emmett or Edward? But, as he looked, he saw that it was Alice. That name helped to ease some of his built-up tension like nothing else could. And, Jasper didn't hesitate to answer this call.

So, with a smile, he said, "Hey, Alice. What can I help you with?"

"You can let me know if you were able to catch Bella before she caught her plane. And, if you did, how did things go?" Alice asked with tightly held excitement sounding in her voice.

"Alice, honey, I'm in a meeting of sorts at the moment, so, can I call you back?" Jasper both told and then asked all at one time.

"Sure. No problem. Just anxious to know how things went." And, with that statement, she said bye and hung up.

"Why didn't you go ahead and tell her about your problem? Alice might have been able to help you." Esme asked quietly. She was having a hard time understanding Jasper's reluctance to face talking about the situation with the ones that needed to know.

Before Jasper could answer his mother, the front door was heard being slammed closed. With that noise, Esme rose and went to move toward the front to see who would dare to enter her home with no regard to how they announced themselves. She had a feeling that she knew who it was but was surprised when she encountered the intruder. As she entered the foyer, she encountered both of her other sons. It had to have been Emmett that slammed the door since he was the one that was starting to apologize for not being quieter.

"Hey, Mom, we decided to come over to let you know about the contract with Ms. Swan being completed. Then, when we arrived, we noticed that Jasper's car was in the drive. Where is he?" Emmett managed to say and ask all in nearly one breath.

"Jasper and your father are in the kitchen. We were busy discussing the Swan contract just before your arrival." Esme informed both of her sons.

All three moved to the kitchen with Edward and Emmett greeting both Carlisle and Jasper upon their entry into the kitchen. And, it didn't take Emmett long to ask how the meeting with Ms. Swan had gone and then continued speaking. "You got her signature on the contract, so how soon can I begin filming?" He asked of his brother.

As Jasper looked to both Carlisle and then Esme before lowering his head, Edward noticed the look of defeat that seemed to claim his brother. He couldn't recall a time, ever, of having seen such a look upon Jasper's face. So, it didn't take long for him to ask, "What happened, Jasper? She signed it didn't she?"

Raising his head and he looked into Edward's calculating eyes and then looking into the expected eyes of Emmett, Jasper knew the time was upon him to come clean about what had occurred. "No. No, she didn't sign the contract." Jasper told them. He paused long enough to try to steady his nerves and then continued. "I almost missed getting to her in time."

However, before Jasper could continue Emmett commented, "Yeah, I know about you calling Alice and then having to try to get to LAX on time to try to catch Ms. Swan before her plane took off. Rosalie informed me about those facts. Then on the way over here I told Edward.

"We decided to come over here to let Mom and Dad know about the situation while we waited to get confirmation from you." Emmett finished explaining only to have Edward take up where he had left off.

"But it seems that you've had time to update Mom and Dad before letting us know." Edward made his snarky comment while looking at Jasper.

Jasper remained silent for a moment, took in a deep breath before looking up at his brothers and remarked, "Yeah, I stopped by over here seeking some advice from Mom and Dad before talking with you two. So, shoot me."

"Why did you need advice from them?" Edward asked rather sharply.

"Not that it's any of your business when or why I need to ask advice from Mom or Dad, but this time I was wondering how to explain things to you two about the contract and Ms. Swan."

"What about the contract? It's all signed now by both Edward and Ms. Swan, so all I want to know is when can I get started filming?" Emmett wanted to know seemingly not having heard what Jasper had said just moments before about the contract not being signed.

"Sorry to have to tell you, but you can't. At least not just yet." Was all that Jasper told him.

Edward was starting to lose patience with his brother because of the half answers that his brother was giving out. So, he snapped, "Just say what you mean and stop with the cryptic shit."

"All right. Ms. Swan didn't sign the contract. I did manage get to see her for a few minutes before her flight was due to leave. I quickly explained to her about you, Edward, having decided to sign the contract as she had wanted it, but she refused to sign it until she had a chance to look it over and to have her attorney look it over.

"She sa….."

Jasper didn't get to finish his statement before Edward interrupted with saying, "What the hell did you just say? She refused to sign after all the hell raising that she had been doing about that damn thing remaining as she had wanted it?!"

"Get the hell off of your high horse, Edward, since you were the one that complicated things from the beginning. You, with your sexual innuendos, demands for the contract to be your way only and then treating her as if she was beneath you, in more ways than one.

"The mess that we are dealing with now came from your self-inflated opinion of yourself. True, you have a reputation of being a playboy, but never have you behaved with a client such as you have with Ms. Swan. So, honestly, no wonder she feels the way she does about your sudden change of opinion." Jasper couldn't reframe from snapping at his brother.

"Don't start on me, Jasper. It's your responsibility to handle the contracts for the material that we want. You should have handled this matter differently from the beginning and not have carried it on this long. If you had then we wouldn't be finding ourselves facing this situation."

"How about I throw your words back at you, don't start on me, Edward. No one told you to carry on as you did." Jasper replied back to his brother's comments.

But, as Edward started to respond back to Jaspers remarks, both Carlisle and Esme rose to their feet and was about to speak to their sons when Emmett beat them to it.

"Stop this nonsense, both of you. Jasper do you have the contract still?" Emmett told his brothers and then asked of Jasper.

Jasper nodded his head and Emmett continued speaking after that as he also held out his hand, "Give me the contract and I'll go myself to Seattle to talk with Ms. Swan. The both of you two can keep your asses here." And, as he finished speaking, he continued waiting as he was still holding out his hand waiting for Jasper to hand it over to him.

"Emmett sounded very excited when I told him about Jasper heading for LAX to get Bella's signature on the contract." Rosalie commented to Alice.

Both women were getting a bit anxious for news of some kind about what happened at the airport. Did Jasper make it on time? And, if he did, was he able to get to Bella before her plane took off?

The both of them felt as if they were on a rollercoaster going from worry, to wondering, to excitement and then back to worry once again. Surely Jasper has had enough time to be able to update them about the situation.

"I can't take much more of this silent nonsense. I'm calling Jasper and he had better tell me what is going on." Alice told Rosalie as she was reaching for her phone. Rosalie agreed with her and was getting ready to call Emmett to see if he knew anything also.

Each woman waited while listening to nothing but ringing, holding their breath and at the same time, silently demanding for the person they were calling to answer their phone.

Bella was happily finishing up dinner when Charlie walked through the front door hollering, "I can smell that all the way outside and you damn well better have enough for seconds and maybe, thirds." He said in a jokingly manner.

"Don't worry, Dad, I made more than enough to put up in the freezer for you so you can have some more after I'm gone. That way I don't have to worry about you starving to death or burning the place down with your badass cooking." Bella responded back at her father.

"What are we having anyway?" Charlie asked as he stopped long enough to remove his hat and gun before moving on to the kitchen. "Whatever it is it smells damn good as I had mentioned when I came in the door."

"Well, we're having BBQ chicken, cinnamon carrots, parsley potatoes, a salad with iced tea and coffee for later." Bella told him as she turned to greet him before beginning to put the food on the table so they could sit down to eat.

Emmett hated to have to break the news to Rosalie about Bella not signing the contract and explained that he was heading for Seattle to get Bella to sign it. He was getting tired of Edward's nonsense and placing the blame for Ms. Swan's attitude on everyone else but himself. Edward started this problem which snowballed to the extent that Jasper wasn't given the time at the last minute to be able to rectify the situation. So, that leaves Emmett to deal with the matter.

He felt that he would be able to talk with Ms. Swan and get the entire matter straightened out with the end results of her signing the contract.

And, he had to agree that after the way Edward had behaved that Ms. Swan had no reason to be trustful of anyone's word in regards to the truth of the contract. His parents were in agreement that Ms. Swan was within her right to check over the contract and to have her attorney double check it before she signed it. So, with that in mind, he was taking the contract to her since Jasper hadn't had the presence of mind to give it to her before she left.

A/N: Jasper didn't have a chance to take his parents advice before his brothers showed up. Bella's happy to be home with Charlie to have a break from all of the tension concerning the situation in L. A. Edward wasn't happy about being told off by his brothers, or, about Emmett taking over with the contract and heading to Seattle.
