I DREAM OF RAINBOWS

Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.

The awesome and talented dowlingnana searched out my errors and corrected them.

As he got off the phone, he looked at his wife and found tears rolling down Esme's face. She continued asking over and over the same two questions, "Why? Why is this happening"

CHAPTER 37: OH, MY!

Carlisle was still trying to console his wife when Emmett and Jasper arrived. Both young men seeing their mother in such a distressed state it immediately confirmed their suspicions as to an extreme happening. Their minds quickly jumped to the conclusion that something had happened to their brother; that Edward had been kidnapped or had been killed. Those were the only two scenarios that came to mind as they saw the condition that Esme was in.

Keeping his arm around Esme, Carlisle motioned for his sons to be seated. However, before he could begin explaining what was happening, Jasper asked, "How bad is he, Dad?" And this question brought both parents to look at their sons.

Then before Carlisle or Esme could answer Jasper's question, Emmett spoke; he demanded to know, "What happened to him? He isn't dead, is he?"

Emmett's last question set off a new flood of tears from Esme, and a shake of the head from Carlisle. But before any more questions could be asked Carlisle looked at his two sons and answered, "Edward isn't hurt or dead, but he is in some serious trouble." And, that statement brought some puzzled looks from both brothers since they couldn't imagine what else could be the problem, so, they waited to hear the explanation instead of doing any more guesswork that seemed to cause their mother more distress.

"Two police officers came by this morning to ask some questions concerning a situation that Edward seems to have gotten mixed up in."

"What questions? Didn't they explain what is going on?" Emmett asked before Jasper could do so.

"Detectives Page and Sinclair will be returning shortly to question all of us. They had mentioned that they would be questioning the two of you, also, so I asked them to come back within an hour to give us time to get you two over. That way we're all questioned at the same time and can finally help put this to rest as we help Edward." Carlisle explained.

"But, Dad, didn't they say what Edward had done to put him in this situation?" Jasper asked as he looked at both of his parents. Then he continued saying as an afterthought, "Maybe, whatever Edward has done we ought to let him stew in his own juices, so he'll learn to be more reasonable about things in the future. He has to learn that not everything is going to go only the way he wants it.

"All that was said was that Edward is waiting for the court to approve his extradition to Seattle for charges that have been filed there. And, that according to the Seattle Police Department, it seems that Edward has committed the same crimes here with us being cited as witnesses to his 'ill treatment of Isabella Swan' was the way the detectives explained it." Esme finally had control of herself enough to answer at last.

"Oh, shit, what the hell has Edward done that we were supposed to have seen?" Emmett asked more to himself even though he spoke his thoughts aloud.

"The only time that I can think of is when Bella and Mark first arrived in L. A. and met us all in Edward's office that first time." Jasper remarked. "But that wasn't really a crime since she hauled off and slapped the hell out of him for something he did out of our sight."

"Jasper's right about that. We didn't see anything he did to her, although, we did hear about his actions." Emmett remarked.

Just as Emmett had finished speaking, a knock could be heard at the front door.

Mark was determined to get a hold of Bella to ask her what the hell was going on. And, with knowing that she was refusing to answer the phone, he decided that it might be worth going to her home to confront her about the current situation.

Letting his secretary know that he would be out of the office for awhile to consult with a client, he left the office to head to Bella's house.

He needed to get all of the necessary information he could to know how the hell to represent his client and to keep the firm out of any legal messes. Otherwise, Mark knew that he would be looking for another job.

Bella was happily working on the new book she had started while being totally unaware of the mess that her father had started brewing. That is at least for the time being however, that bubble that she was existing in is scheduled to pop at any given moment.

She took a break and saw that she had several new messages and then there was a banging on her front door that startled her. However, since there wasn't anyone that had been scheduled to stop by, she chose to ignore the knocking and continued on to retrieve a bottle of cold water from the fridge.

While taking a long drink she gave some thought about checking her voice messages but decided that all of that could wait since she was on a 'writer's roll' with the new book. She didn't want to have to deal with anything that might interfere with the flow of her thoughts.

It seemed as if the knocking was never going to stop when suddenly the silence seemed to be louder than the knocking had been. This didn't faze Bella as she went back into her small office and got wrapped up in the characters once more that she was busily giving life to.

Time passed, or, at least, seemed to do so, when the knocking started once more at her front door. And, as she was trying to ignore it and get back into her bubble, she heard Mark calling her name along with some more jumbled words that she was having a hard time understanding.

So, with a heavy sigh, Bella got up to go see what all of the commotion was about. This was the second time today that someone was banging on her door. She didn't know why the first time, or, if it was even connected to why Mark was now standing on the other side of the door demanding to have her attention.

Jerking the door open, she demanded, angrily, "What the hell are you doing here? I told you that I didn't want to be disturbed for any reason short of an absolute emergency."

"Bella, this is an emergency. I need to know what the hell is going on." Mark told her.

"What in the hell are you talking about? I have nothing going on except trying to get another book written."

"Bella, the police came to see me today."

"So. About what?"

"They said they were investigating charges that had been filed against Edward Cullen concerning certain criminal actions he had taken against you."

"What the HELL?!" Bella asked as she almost was shouting the last word.

"I don't know any more than what I've just told you." Mark answered.

"Shit. Okay, let's go down to the police station and talk with the officers that came to see you. You do know their names, right? Then we'll be able to get to the bottom of this and clear up any mistakes that they might be making."

"Yes, of course I know their names. Detectives Riley and Summers." Mark snapped back at her since he was getting tired of her treating him as if he hadn't any commonsense.

Bella stood and looked at him for a moment or so before releasing a heavy sigh as she turned to go change her clothing.

In no time both Bella and Mark were in his car heading toward the police station to try to get to the bottom of all of the misunderstanding. Bella was trying to think of why or who could have filed charges against Edward Cullen and had gotten her name involved.

Things were on the way to a good start with getting the movie done that she didn't need this bump in the road that would definitely put a strain on a working relationship with any of the Cullen's.

Emmett rose and moved toward the front door. Everyone else remained seated in the living room. It didn't take long before Emmett returned with the two detectives, Page and Sinclair, coming into the room right behind him.

Introductions were performed and the two detectives took a seat on the remaining two unoccupied chairs. Once seated they quickly repeated what they had said earlier to the two senior Cullen's and then hesitated for a minute before starting with their questioning.

It didn't take them long to come to the conclusion that although some sort of possible criminal action had been taken against Ms. Swan, there was, however, no actual witnesses to any such actions, or any evidence. But it seemed that witnesses had observed Ms. Swan when she had assaulted Mr. Cullen, instead.

"Very well. What we've discovered here needs to be passed on to Seattle with the message that charges will not be filed here against Mr. Cullen." Det. Page told the family.

And, as the two officers rose to leave Carlisle asked, "Does that mean that Edward will be released from jail? I am assuming from all that you've told us that he is presently in custody."

Det. Sinclair answered, "Mr. Cullen, yes, your son is in jail at the moment and since Edward Cullen is awaiting extradition to Seattle he will have to remain there. We have no control over that."

"Is there nothing we can do to get him released?" Esme asked.

"Mrs. Cullen, there is really nothing any one can do except for Seattle dropping the charges and notifying the authorities here." Det. Page answered her question.

"The best advice that we can give to you is to get a hold of a good attorney and have him working to get your son's release. That would be the only possibility if the courts will grant him bond until Seattle comes for him. But you must realize that the court will be considering Edward as a possible flight risk and therefore might not grant a bond.

"I realize that it doesn't give you much hope, but that's the best we can suggest." Det. Sinclair responded.

There was nothing else that either Detective could say to help give any sort of hope, comfort, or assurance to the Cullen family, so they said their goodbyes and left.

And, at the sound of the front door closing the silence that had held everyone in the room in a stunned stillness caused the room to erupt into noise; everyone began tossing out suggestion after suggestion. Then the sarcastic remarks about Bella Swan began.

Esme suddenly stood and told everyone to be quiet. "We don't have all of the facts to be able to make any sort of judgement about why Isabella Swan decided to take such action. And until we do, I suggest that we all keep our opinions to ourselves for the time being.

"I would like to speak directly with her to be able to ask her all of the questions that we each have floating around in our minds."

"I don't see why you would want to talk with her after what she's done to Edward." Carlisle groused to his wife.

"Dad, I know that you might not like to hear this, but I'm having a hard time believing that Ms. Swan did this out of spite. But I'm sure that Emmett and I can get a bit more information by asking Alice and Rosalie, Ms. Swan's cousins."

"And, I have to agree with Jasper; if Ms. Swan was going to do this, I would have thought that she would have refused to speak with me let alone sign the contract for doing the movie." Emmett contributed his opinion about the situation.

"I think that you might have a good idea; why don't you talk with her cousins and see if they can spread any light upon this whole mess.?" Esme agrees as she encourages Jasper and Emmett to get in touch with Alice and Rosalie.

Bella and Mark walked into the police station and approaches the sergeant on duty. After asking to speak with the two detectives that had spoken with Mark, Bella and Mark were directed to take a seat until the detectives could be notified.

It didn't take long before Det. Riley came from the back to approach Mark while he was glancing in Bella's direction. And with introducing himself, he escorted Bella and Mark back to an interview room where he was joined by his partner, Det. Summers.

Bella quickly explained why she and Mark were there while letting the detectives know that she was puzzled as to how her name was involved in anything that had to do with Edward Cullen; or any charges that had filed against him.

The two detectives quickly explained what they knew and as one particular name was mentioned Bella jerked to attention. All three men watched as Bella's attitude turned from puzzlement to absolute anger.

A/N: Oh, hell, Bella just heard a name that has put her back up immediately. I think we all know who might have done that. What do you think Bella is going to do about the situation? Also, what do you think Alice and Rosalie is going to tell Jasper and Emmett?

Thanks for reading and looking forward to hearing from you.
