I DREAM OF RAINBOWS

Disclaimer: The Cullen's, the Swans, and most of the characters mentioned in the story that are known from Stephanie Meyer's beloved Twilight Saga, are all hers and hers alone. I neither have nor wish to pass them off as mine. I do appreciate the fact that she did bring them to life and allows us to play with them in our imaginations. The only thing I will claim is the current storyline.

But before leaving he made a stop by his office to leave a message for the company's Human Resource department to find him a new Personal Assistant. Then he called his current one at her home but received no answer, so he left the message, "You're lying ass is fired!."

CHAPTER 56: SURPRISE!?

Edward was getting extremely frustrated with having to deal with a jealous bitch that he had never had any sort of a relationship except for boss/employee situation. As far as he knew he had never given her any indication that he might have an interest of taking things further outside of the office. The poor woman might have wished for such a thing, but it was never a thought that passed Edward's mind let alone being inspired by her in other parts of his body.

It wasn't that his PA wasn't attractive enough because she was, however, Edward didn't want the complications that could arise if he had a relationship with anyone working within the company. That was why he never showed the slightest interest in any of the women that worked around him or his brothers.

So, Edward kept all of his affairs, or rather, one-night stands, with ladies that didn't work for or with him or his brothers. He felt that he was able to have better control over those that he associated with by adhering to that policy.

Looking around his office to make sure that he had everything organized for the next few days, Edward was satisfied that he had managed all that needed to be done. He had dealt with his PA situation, left messages for Jasper and Emmett to let them know what was on the calendar while he was gone and how things needed to be managed in reference to those appointments. Now, he was ready to head home, pack and get to LAX to be able to catch his flight on time for New York.

He knew that he was going to arrive in NYC before Bella since she was heading for Seattle first and then proceeding on to New York. By getting there first he would be able to get settled in his hotel and still be able to surprise Bella once she arrived. Of course, he knew that he had no way of knowing exactly when she might arrive, but he didn't think that it would be difficult to find out. After all there couldn't be that many writer's conferences going on all at the same time.

Edward was hopeful that Bella would be glad to see him and not take exception by considering him to be a stalker. And, once again as that thought goes through his mind, he questions himself as to why it should matter what she thought. He just knew that once he had spent one night with her that his obsession of her would wane. Then he would be able to move to his next conquest and Bella would join the ranks of all of the other names in his little black book for when he wanted to give her some of his time.

Next morning, Emmett and Jasper arrived at the office and Jasper was immediately contacted by the company's Human Resource Department. They had a question as to what type of person would Mr. Edward Cullen like to have as his new Personal Assistant.

"What are you talking about? My brother has a PA and as far as I know he hasn't requested an additional one." Jasper remarked. Of course, Jasper had made that remark before seeing his brother's note.

"Sir, I'm sorry to be bothering you, but I do have instructions from Mr. Edward to find him a new Personal Assistant since he fired his other one." The voice on the phone explained to Jasper.

"Let me get back with you once I'm able to find out more about what is going on." Jasper replied. Then he quickly got up from his desk and was heading for the door to go see Emmett when Emmett, instead, burst through Jasper's office door.

"What the hell is this?" Emmett asked, puzzled as he was waving around a piece of paper in his hand.

"Emmett, I don't know what you're talking about since I only got here, and our HR department was calling me with something to do what kind of person is Edward wanting to be his PA.

"So, just as I'm getting ready to come to your office you come barging in here waving around a sheet of paper asking me questions. Questions, I might say, that I don't know the answers to at the moment.

"Now, tell me what the hell has you so hyped up."

"Our brother; that's what has me going this morning. He left me and you, I'm assuming you as well, a note letting us know what needed to be dealt with for the next few days while he's in New York."

With that information, Jasper walks back over to his desk to look around to see if he did, indeed, have a note from Edward. He finally sees it and sits down to read it. After a moment he looked up at Emmett and asks, "What the hell do you think he's doing in New York; or do we even want to know?"

"Remember how upset he got last night when we told him about Bella leaving to go to New York for a writer's conference?" Emmett asks, and then continues, "I think our brother has gone after our Ms. Swan. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Edward has more feelings for Isabella Swan than what he's willing to admit to us let alone to himself."

"You could be right, but how do you explain this inquiry from the HR department about a new PA for him?" Jasper remarks as he asks his question at the same time.

"You said that HR told you that Edward had fired his PA, and if that is so, then that would explain why he's wanting a new one. I think we need to check further into that little bit of a change." Emmett suggests as Jasper reaches for the phone to call Edward's office.

Not being sure if someone is there to even answer the phone, but hoping that somehow, they can get some kind of explanation. However, they were surprised that a man answered the phone.

After asking a few pertinent questions, the mystery of needing a new PA was solved. Jasper explained to Emmett about Edward firing his PA last night after he had left them at the club.

"It seems that she had lied to a client or two about Edward not being able to take their calls. Also, it seems that this isn't the first time that Edward had complained about her attitude towards certain people that came into the office."

"Damn, no wonder he was pissed last night after what we told him about Bella trying to reach him yesterday. His PA stepped across the line one too many times, so it seems." Emmett commented and then asked, "But who was that that was answering his phone?"

"A temp from the HR department that will be filling in until a more permanent one can be found." Jasper answered.

The two brothers spent the next few minutes going over everything that was in Edward's note to them, and it was decided that Jasper would be managing everything since Emmett was now busy getting his project up and going.

Bella got home and was going over everything that she needed to manage before leaving for New York. The first thing she did was to call her dad to update him on all that had been happening in the last several days.

"You're telling me that his attitude has changed that much in just a matter of days?" Charlie asks of his daughter. "Do you believe that he is sincere in this change of attitude or is it just for show? In all of my years in law enforcement I've never seen anyone change that quickly unless some extremely traumatic experience happens suddenly."

"Dad, it seems to be sincere, but I'm still on my guard and keeping an eye out just in case the penny falls without much warning." Bella replied.

"Just be careful and be watchful. Don't let him hurt you, baby girl." Charlie gave his warning before telling Bella to have an enjoyable time and to call if she needed anything or once she returned home. "Love you and worry about you." Were his parting words.

After talking with her dad, Bella called and talked with her cousins for a few moments before finally getting around to packing for her trip to New York. She didn't have much time since her flight was leaving out that night, but despite having a limited amount of time Bella was able to get accomplished all that needed to be done.

Of course, there wasn't much that needed to be done in regards to the house since she had already emptied the fridge of any food that might spoil and had no left-over dirty dishes or anything of that nature. That had been taken care of before going to LA a week ago.

Bella got to Sea-Tac with time to spare before her flight was due to leave. While she was waiting for her flight to be called, Bella was sitting in a small café drinking a cup of coffee when her phone rang. Looking to see who the caller might be, she gave a small chuckle after seeing Alice's name popping up on her caller ID.

"Hey, cuz, what's the problem? It's nearly time for my flight to be called."

"Just got some interesting news from Jasper that I think you might find worth knowing."

"Okay, pixie, lay it on me. What has you so hyper at the moment?"

"I found out that Edward has suddenly left the city on his way to New York. He fired his PA before leaving and just left a note for Jasper and Emmett about what needs to be managed while he was gone over the next few days."

"Okay, Alice, I don't get your point. What is so exciting about this news? So, he had to go to New York to see a client."

"No, you're missing the point. You're going to New York and suddenly he decides to go to New York right after Emmett told him that you were gone to your writer's conference there." Alice said as if everything was making perfect sense and was obvious.

"So?" Bella questioned while trying to see what the punchline might be.

"Don't you get it? Jasper said that Edward got really upset because you hadn't said anything to him personally about leaving, so Emmett explained why you hadn't. That explanation seemed to have upset him even further.

"Edward left the club where the three were having a guy's night and that was the last time anyone saw him. Then the next morning when Jasper and Emmett got to their offices, they received the note giving them the information that he was going to be gone for the next few days."

"Alice, I love you dearly, but please get to the damn point that you're trying to make." Bella demanded while still trying to understand why Alice thought any of this might be of importance to her.

"Bella, you aren't usually this dense. It all makes sense; Edward has gone to New York to be with you."

"Woman, you are crazier than the Mad Hatter." But before Bella could say anything else her flight was being called so she quickly told Alice that she had to go because she had to get onto her plane.

Bella turned off her phone, rose and gathered her few things she was taking on the plane with her and headed for the gate where she needed to check-in.

Once Edward had gotten checked into his hotel, he started checking around to see where the writer's conference was going to be held and received a pleasant surprise; it was being held at the hotel where he was staying.

The next thing he started checking into was to see if anyone had any information as to when Isabella Swan was expected to arrive. It didn't take long for that information to be forthcoming since the hotel had arranged to send a car to pick her up once she landed.

That was all the information that he needed to be able to put the next steps of his plan into action.

He canceled the reservation for the car that was assigned to pick Bella up, then started making the arrangements that he wanted for when her plane landed.

A/N: What is Edward up to now? Any ideas? How is Bella going to react to once Edward shows up and finds out that they are staying at the same hotel? Also, once she finds out that he had canceled her arrangements for being picked up at the airport. And, finally, will Edward try to bring his scheme to completion while he and Bella are in New York together?
