[A/N] I drew this picture myself, but the original drawing of Iida on the left came from someone else and I just added Yuuma to it. The picture I looked at was found on Pinterest. The link will be on my other accounts since I do not know how to add a link here. Credit to the original artist of Iida.
"Everyone line up in accordance to your seat number!" Iida yelled. He was doing those weird robotic hand chops, Yuuma wasn't sure why he was doing that though. Was it fun? Should he try it? As Iida continued to yell out orders to organize the rest of the class, Yuuma found himself mimicking the hand chops. Yuuma's face was blank while Iida had a concentrated gleam in his eyes, not noticing he'd acquired a shadow.
"Am I doing it right?" The question finally caught the dark blue haired teen's attention. The glee and slight embarrassment couldn't be hidden on the secretary rep's face as he happily replied.
"Yes!"
'No!' The rest mentally replied at the same time. 'But it's cute!'
Yuuma, completely oblivious to their plight, thought he and Iida had gotten closer as friends through this and was very happy. He continued to copy the robotic hand movement which he found pretty fun to do.
Iida's mood was shot down the moment they got on the bus. It had a completely different format than what he'd thought, so him lining up the class was completely useless. Yuuma patted his back in comfort and then took his seat beside Izuku. As soon as everyone was in, they were off.
They were given a choice on whether or not to wear their hero gear. Yuuma, of course, chose to wear it. Yuuma was very practical and thought of different scenarios that could happen. When he was designing his costume, rescue was the main thing he had in mind. The grips on his gloves, the medical kits, his visor, all of these bits of equipment were meant to help him in finding and rescuing people.
As well as finding enemies, but fighting was always his second option. If he had a choice, he would rather not have to fight at all. Even though he believed himself okay in combat thanks to his years of training, he was more focused on the damage control aspect of it all. If he could avoid conflict to concentrate on rescue, he would. Peoples lives matter much more than winning a battle.
Thinking about all of the possible things they could be learning today about rescue, Yuuma had almost completely zoned out until Tsu started to speak her mind.
"You know, I usually say what's on my mind. Your quirk is a lot like All Might's," She stated, causing Izuku to sweat bullets. He was saved by the others stating the fact that All Might didn't hurt himself when he used his power, and the conversation drifted to the flashiest quirks and who would be popular, this was the moment Yuuma heard his name and tuned back in to the conversation.
"Huh?"
"Yeah! He'll definitely be a popular hero."
"My quirk is just hardening my skin. Not all that flashy or cool." Kirishima had a little bit of a downcast look. When Yuuma unconsciously peaked at his energy he noticed he was a bit depressed. Yuuma did not like his friends being depressed. Yuuma cut in at this point.
"How flashy or cool something is does not equate to skill and usefulness. A hero can be as flashy as they want but if that's all they are then they won't be much help in the field. You are great at using your quirk, and I'm sure that even without it, with your level of tenacity and fighting prowess, you'd do extremely well. You are all amazing." Yuuma said genuinely.
The words sunk themselves in and Kirishima let out a blinding sharp tooth smile, "Thanks!"
"Speaking of quirks and skills, I've been thinking about something." Yuuma said, getting everyone's attention.
"What is it?"
"Along with the study group, I was thinking of making a training group too. Everyone could work on their different styles and get tips from each other. You might not be able to think of a different way to use your quirk or utilize your different skills right now, but maybe studying others could help you figure it out for yourself. Izuku-nii has a lot of notebooks dedicated to the analysis of many different heroes, different battle tactics, and other facts. We could also have some of the teachers supervise."
"That... that sounds absolutely manly!"
"Fight training..." Katsuki had a malicious and delighted grin on his face at the suggestion.
"My notebooks?" Izuku was red with embarrassment and not a small bit of happiness. Most of his life he was made fun of because of those notebooks, but they were his only outlet to chase his dream. Now Yuuma had given him another use for them, he was beyond happy they'd become more than just useless diaries. "Yeah... I'd be more than happy to use them for a training group." He said with a smile.
"I also thought of this because you desperately need training, Izuku-nii. I will not watch you break your limbs constantly like you are some masochist who enjoys it." A pause. "Are you a masochist, Izuku?"
Stab!
"And Katsuki-nii, you train too roughly. You're going to end up damaging your arms just like Izuku does." Most of the people on the bus that didn't know about that fact looked at the ash blonde, who was frowning deeply.
Stab!
There was a pause before Yuuma looked at him and asked. "Are you a masochist like Izuku?"
Stab! Stab!
"No!" Katsuki boomed. Quickly nipping the misunderstanding in the bud.
"I'm not a masochist, Yuuma-chan!" Izuku bellowed for the same reason.
"Okay." Yuuma nodded, accepting their answer easily. Both sweat dropped a bit at how he'd even come up with that question in the first place. But the moment they looked at their history they figured it out and ended up asking the question to themselves.
Izuku did not like breaking his limbs. Definitely no.
Katsuki loved to train, loved to fight, loved his explosions, and enjoyed exorcise...
He was left on a maybe.
Yuuma had left the subject altogether and continued listing his reasons for wanting the training group.
"Uraraka-san, you have good potential for close combat, but you have trouble thinking on your feet when pressured. The 'Comet Homerun' you did during the battle trial is a prime example of recklessness. And you fell for every trap I put up in the battle trial."
Stab! Stab!
"...Every single one?" She asked nervously.
"Yes. Every single one." Yuuma replied bluntly. "But you did very well despite that." He said honestly.
She deflated knowing she fell for all of his plans but felt better knowing he thought she did well.
"It seems that everyone thinks that their quirk can only be used one way, I was hoping that by creating a training group we could spread our horizons a bit." Yuuma concluded, not noticing that a few of his classmates looked as if they were kicked in the leg from being called out.
'Yuuma... is very blunt and straightforward.'
'He holds no punches!'
'Manly.'
"I'm not left out of needing training either. I lost control. To lose control was completely shameful and dangerous and something I never want to happen again. To hurt myself is one thing, to almost hurt someone else is inexcusable. I still do not understand why Aizawa gave me any praise."
Stab! Stab! Stab!
'HE DOESN'T EVEN HOLD BACK ON HIMSELF!?'
"Yuu-chan? What do you mean by 'lose control'? Do you mean quirk exhaustion, kero?" Tsuyu asked the question they all had. Yuuma was not hiding this fact from anyone, and since she asked, he answered with honesty as he always did.
"My quirk is connected to my emotions. When they build up, I lose control of my output, which causes damage to the things around me, not excluding people. I call that having a 'breakdown'. Even if it is a good emotion like 'Joy'...I feel like I could still hurt someone. That's what I mean when I say 'lose control'. I.. do not deal with stress very well, it is something I am working on. Although it takes a lot for me to get to that point." He said, all of his classmates eyes widening.
They hadn't known that he dealt with so much.
"So the training group can help me too. Maybe I'll be able to control that outburst one day. It's still a long ways off, but I will work hard until I can. Until then, I'm in your care." He bowed slightly to all of them.
"No problem! We'll help all we can!" Kirishima being the manliest supportive friend.
"Yeah. Making a training group, huh? Nice!" Sero chipped in. Everyone gave their own approval. Well, almost everyone, Todoroki was silent during the whole thing, but he was also interested in what they were planning.
They were touched that he trusted them enough to let them know this. What they didn't know was that it was more than just trust that was the reason he chose to tell them this problem he had. It was for their safety.
He realized it after the trial and thought hard on it. He would be spending his high school years training with these individuals. It was better for them to know the potential danger of that rather than not, so that if it ever happened, which he prays it never did, then they would be better prepared.
He did not want to hurt anyone.
They continued to go back and forth with their questions and opinions, doing their best to make their youngest feel better after the unexpectedly deep and sobering answer to their question. They were shocked and touched that he answered with such honesty, which they found to be Yuuma's most selling point.
Any other person would have dodged the question of not answered at all but he didn't. He'd earned even more of their respect unconsciously.
Aizawa was listening silently from the front of the bus. They were almost at their destination. He was proud of Yuuma for owning up to his own shortcomings and admitting that he had a problem to his classmates. It was a show of trust as well as respect. Hearing the rest of his class encouraging their young class president also brought a small smile on his face.
He'd gotten a good bunch of kids this year.
But his smile did not stay for long, as if it was an illusion. Yuuma's quirk. It was more than what it seemed. He was brought back to a conversation he'd had with Airi a long while ago, a few months after the tragedy.
-Flashback-
Aizawa was doing his usual visits to the Kageyama home. The children were with their grandmother, so it was just Airi and him at the house. She'd called him over since he was one of the very few who knew the truth about the tragedy that took place just a few months ago.
That Yuuma was the one to defeat the villain, and his mysterious form he'd taken that day. Only he, All Might, and Airi had seen it clearly. The other heroes that were present didn't get there in time to see it, only noticing the passed out Yuuma on the ground between the now deceased Touch and Replay.
Airi was surround by old books in what seemed to be a small library, it was kept in the basement of the home under tight lock and key. This was the Vault, home to the Kageyama Family Records. It seemed that she'd read through hundreds of the books, writing down different notes on her pad to gather all of the facts. She was focused, but she noticed the moment he'd stepped into the house.
"Have you taken a break yet?"
"That's rich coming from you, Shota." She answered, not even looking up from the book. But he did see the very, very small smile on her face before it disappeared again. He missed her smiling, but he knew that it would be a very long time before she could smile openly again.
"Have you found anything?" He changed the subject back to work. "About the 'entity' or whatever other term you've found for it?" He walked up to her, sitting in one of the chairs that was present in the well lit room. She sat down too, finally putting the book down as she jotted down the last of the notes she could.
"Yes and no."
She'd read almost every book in there and could only find bits and pieces. But it was better than nothing and she had to thank her great uncle Ritsu for even writing down what he knew of it. Since it started as just a diary of his daily activities, it wasn't taken up as family records until his niece mentioned it. It became a tradition to write and store things about their daily achievements so that the next generation would always know about their ancestors.
If they hadn't done that, she would be in the dark about what Yuuma was going through. She would have nothing to compare it too, and she wouldn't know even remotely how to help him. She wouldn't of even known what signs to look out for. Uncle Ritsu paid close attention to his brother Shigeo and was very protective of his brother. When his brother decided to take on the mantle of 'Hero' Uncle Ritsu was one of the people who helped him train along with others who also had abilities.
Even someone named Reigen Arataka, who was an ancestor of Yuuma's father, participated in the training. It's said that he was Shigeo's first master. He was quirkless, which was seen as more normal back then. Or it was thought that he was, but he also had a bit of an ability. That ability became stronger and changed through the generations until it got to Yuuma's dad. It's said that Yuuma's father was the spitting image of their ancestor.
"So? What did you find?" He asked, waiting for her to get all of her information in order before she began informing him. She had included him, All Might, and Naomasa in this smaller case of hers as they were the only few who new the truth of the matter. The officials knew that Yuuma had a very powerful and possibly dangerous quirk, but that was the extent of their knowledge and she intended to keep it that way.
"Yuuma and Shigeo's quirks are extremely similar based on what I've read. The only difference being that Shigeo's body wasn't as weak as Yuuma's is. I plan to have him strengthen his body steadily so that he can take the possible strain his quirk will put on him later. From what I've read and my own guesses based off of it, his quirk will only continue to get stronger."
"Stronger than it already is? That's... alarming. I still don't understand why my quirk didn't work on him. I may not be able to nullify mutant type quirks but their quirk-related functions should be nullified. For example, if a mutant-type quirk makes certain parts of their body like a gun, the gun itself won't disappear but it won't able to fire anything." He explained, his brows furrowing in confusion. "So why did it not work on Yuuma? His quirk isn't a mutant-type, but seems to be an emitter type."
"With all of the notes that Uncle Ritsu took on Shigeo's quirk, what type it was was unknown. He was able to do things related to telekinesis, he could go out-of-body, he could make things grow, and many other things... including that form we saw Yuuma take." She said, putting her hands together as the painful memory came back.
"Although their quirks seem to be similar, and I do not know to what extent the similarities go, it seems that Yuuma's quirk is a mix of emitter and mutant type quirks. I compared his medical reports from his birth to... after he got his quirk. His body has been adjusting and strengthening as if preparing itself for his quirk manifestation. It was most likely the reason he was ill often." She assessed.
"His entire bone structure, his organs, his brain, even his blood... all of it is slightly different and much more durable than others and is still becoming stronger. This process was the reason his immune system was sensitive, but seeing as his quirk has finally arrived, that problem might go away too." She gave Shota the records supporting her claim and he nodded his head coming to the same conclusion after skimming it.
Mutant-type quirks usually gave the user extra limbs or changed their body, making it look different from others. Prime example of a mutant type quirk is having wings or extra arms. A Transformation-type quirk allows the user to alter their body, an example being Edgeshot. Emitter-type quirks allow the user to generate or possibly control certain things.
Because of the description of these three types, most thought that Yuuma's quirk would be in the Emitter category. But the change on the inside of his body is closer to the Mutant category, and whatever that form he'd taken was, it almost seemed to be something from the Transformation category.
This type of quirk was rare to the extreme, even rarer then some people having dual quirks. Because of a certain incident, the term 'Quirk Overload' came into being. The body usually can't hand more than one quirk which is why it is normal to see a child either get their mother or father's quirks, or even one of their grandparents'' quirks but not both or all.
One-For-All was a rare combination between two quirks, and All For One is the perverse exception to the concept as he is able to take and give whatever quirk he wants.
But, there are rare, natural cases where the two parent quirks combine through their child, creating a new quirk altogether. In Yuuma's case, however, it seemed like bits and pieces of every ability seen in the family was converging on him, combining into what they were dealing with now. Airi was worried that his body would collapse from the strain, but then she found his mutation and felt like she was able to breath again.
Without that mutation, Yuuma would have most likely died the moment his quirk manifested. The very thought terrifies her to no end.
If her guess is right, which she prays to whatever god is up there that it is, then his body will continue to adjust to negate the strain his quirk puts on it, and training will hopefully make it even stronger. His quirk will get stronger along with his body, and they will grow together at a steady pace. It will be hard, but she was determined to get him through it.
She couldn't lose another loved one. Her heart could barely take it as it is. She was thankful for people like Aizawa who came to check in on her regularly. He comes off as blunt and curt but behind that he was sweet. He's great with kids, they share interests, and he has his own charm.
Airi liked having Aizawa around.
But now wasn't the time to be thinking about that.
"And that form? Any leads on what it was? My quirk had no effect on it at all and... It didn't seem to be Yuuma. It gave off a completely different vibe." He said. The memory of his encounter was still fresh in his mind. His eyes were lidded as if he was still half-asleep, electric trails going down his eyes like tears. But the atmosphere around him...
He'd never felt such a dangerous vibe before.
It was different from a villain. It wasn't killing intent or bloodlust he felt; it was screaming 'don't come any closer'. It was simply dangerous; all of his instincts were screaming at him to get far away from him. The moment he felt safe in their presence however, the feeling went away and it returned to being Yuuma.
It was as if it was scoping them out, and the moment it was sure Yuuma was safe it returned to being asleep.
"That form... It was called 'The Unknown' because no one knew what it was." She said after a bit of silence. "A protective mechanism, a sentient part of the quirk, none of the entries I've read know for sure what it was. It only ever appeared when Shigeo was in danger, and he had only ever been seen in that form a handful of times. The 'entity' was also seen in his daughter, and further down the line, her grandchild. These were the only mentions of it even existing, and no other sighting and information was put in until..."
"Until Yuuma."
"Precisely. I don't know what is to come. But my guess is that it had to do with his emotional state, It's like a trigger for it. When his stress levels are at their peak, he breaks down, I told you about what happened at the hospital."
He nodded. Yuuma had to be transferred to a sturdier room because the one he was in was completely upheaved.
"My theory is... that form is taken when the situation goes far beyond the peak of his stress. When he can't handle it anymore or isn't able to consciously try to. It's something that will only come out when his life is in danger, or if I'm right, when someone he cares about's life is in danger."
"Like his parents." He concluded solemnly. Airi nodded as her fist clenched tightly.
"I pray he is never forced to enter that state again. I never want him to be in a situation that he ends up using it. No child should ever be brought to that point..."
-End Flashback-
His thoughts flashed back to what happened during Yuuma's battle trial. The footage from outside the building was completely intact, so he was able to see the aftermath of Yuuma's breakdown. That level of destruction was just his peak, what would happen if he was forced to go beyond that?
Aizawa also didn't want him to ever enter that state. But for some reason he was having a really, really bad feeling.
-Elsewhere-
"What's wrong with him?"
"I am not sure, Tomura Shigaraki." Answered Kurogiri, who was just as wary at the moment. They were gathering the villains to commence their plan. Everything was falling into place. That was, until Grim showed up.
He was unusually quiet and docile. He wasn't sassy, snarky, or blood thirsty. He seemed... upset. They would say sad and depressed but they were way too scared to associate those words with the demonic physical spirit. His presence felt completely different than it usually did. He didn't seem all that dangerous or evil. That, and the fact that instead of a black mass of eerie darkness, he was a lighter shade, closer to dark gray. He had been like that since the day started, and was very mellow.
They had no idea why he was like this, and because Grim was usually very straightforward with the things he wants, like, and his plans, they were wary of this quiet version of him. It was a different type of danger of not knowing what he was going to do compared to knowing exactly how he does things.
Grim did not care for their wariness as he was in his own thoughts. Yes, thoughts, he'd been having a lot of these as of late. He found that every year around this time he becomes like this. It's like an instinctual habit he'd obtained. He knew that it started during the time he was alive, and he knew there was a reason for it. This mellow, depressed mood of his.
He remembered most of his life, and most of his afterlife, but there were parts that were missing which he has come to recognize. Parts of himself were missing. He did not like this, and he went to the source of his problems for an explanation just days ago. The answer he got did not please him.
Just day before he woke up, a part of his energy had escaped from one of their local labs. It wreaked havoc and was taken care of by heroes, lost forever. Grim was sure that the memories that he was missing were contained in that lost bit of himself. So now that he knew that something was missing, he actively looked through his memories and thoughts.
Why did he become this? What had happened that set him on this path? When he thought back, he could not find the reason, at least not the core reason. Why did he want the world to experience pain? Why did he feel pain in his very being at the moment? It wasn't the pain that was felt from injuries, it was like something important had been taken from him. Something precious and irreplaceable.
What was missing? What was gone? Why did he want everything around him to vanish... including himself. He felt like he failed to do something important, and because of this failure nothing else mattered anymore. It was this type of pain that he was feeling, loss. But why?
Why?
He was born in a time where people were afraid of those who were different, in this age that difference was called 'Quirks'. His village was always hostile toward him and he lived alone. They treated him so badly any normal person would have been snapped, especially a person such as himself who did not take anything from anyone.
Something held him back back then. Something kept him from snapping. Something which he can not remember kept him sane, rational, and that something made him happy during those hard times. That something was his only reason for holding his tongue and stilling his hand.
But then that something was gone. And remembered a deep, dark, and primal rage that consumed him for countless years. He remembered reveling in their screams as nothing was holding him back anymore, and he remembered emptiness afterwards. Wanting to fill this emptiness, he continued to reap.
What was this something which he could not remember? Whatever happened, it was one of the reasons other than the obvious facts that he was livid when he awoke in that lab. Labs themselves infuriated him to no end, and the Nomu were no exception.
It took a lot of convincing from All For One for him to stop wreaking havoc on his Nomu Project. He was sure he'd destroyed a few facilities before he finally stopped. He could've sword the scientist/doctor he'd spared that day puked blood at the amount of damage he caused.
Why did he not like labs? Why did he have the primal urge to kill that doctor still? Every time he comes across the poor man he has to make a conscious effort not to brutally murder him. For some reason he wants to watch the doctor scream in agony for many days before finally giving him a painful, agonizing death but why? He doesn't even look appetizing, not in the slightest. Grim was sure his soul would taste like garbage.
So where did this primal and instinctual hate come from?
The only clue he had to this was ironically his own 'death' he suffered at the hands of Shigeo Kageyama. He remembered their battle and everything that had led up to it. He remembered leading the police around and the hard battles he had with them. He remembered their deaths and the sweet taste of their souls. He especially remembered the frustration he felt when he was caught by the younger of the brothers, Ritsu.
He could never forget the form Shigeo took, or the amount of fear he experienced for the first time as the man single mindedly gave chase to him. Days, weeks, months, it didn't matter how long it took. Shigeo Kageyama did not give up. He did not care how much destruction was left in the wake of his rage, his only goal was to eliminate the source of it: Grim.
Grim distinctly remembered, that for a brief, fleeting moment, he understood and empathized with Shigeo's rage. It was the moment he 'died' that he had this feeling. He had experienced that same amount of rage before, the same kind of rage.
Exactly the same.
"Was it not something, but someone that I lost? One could even call this a form of retrograde amnesia. Sigh, I want to remember, but with that part of me lost, those precious memories will never be complete. Damnit, should I kill someone to feel better? Sigh, I'm not even in the mood to kill, this is really bad." He sat unassumingly in the waiting location they'd set up for the operation.
"Is he broken? Did his game get hacked?"
"I am not sure, Tomura Shigaraki." Kurogiri said again. Grim looked up at them, staring intently at Kurogiri which gave the latter chills.
Grim had an urge to do something about this person. Any other time, he would not care for his existence but for some reason Kurogiri's origins upset him greatly. And the warp gate did not even know, which upset him even more for some reason. He got up from his resting place and went right up to them, causing them to flinch slightly.
He floated over to him, and then went through him completely. Kurogiri felt a bone chilling cold ripple through him before it was followed with an acute pain. Grim had changed something, or removed something, or split something. Kurogiri wasn't sure but something felt immediately different and he was terrified of it.
Terrified? Disgusted? Furious? Lost? Sorry? Worried? He was feeling all of these things which he normally wouldn't feel at all. Kurogiri was apathetic, only following orders from All For One and Tomura Shigaraki. But as of that moment he was having an internal battle with himself that he seemed to have only noticed right at that moment.
What had Grim done to him?
Shigaraki looked at Kurogiri strangely before turning back towards Grim who now stood on the other side of them, having returned to his deep black color as if his earlier mood was a lie. "What did you do to my warp gate?" Shigaraki said, his anger clear yet ignored completely by the spirit.
Grim stared at him for a good minute before slowly replying. "...How careless of me. I nearly gave a fuck. Something is truly off with me today. I need to torment something, yes, I should go torment some helpless sap to amuse myself. Later I'm going to poltergeist the shit out of someone." He left without another word, leaving them dumbfounded and confused.
'What just happened?'
"Kurogiri." He went directly to assess his warp gate user. If He did something to Kurogiri then it s game over before they've even reached level 1.
"I am fine, Tomura Shigaraki. Shall we begin the operation?" He answered the way he normally did without any obvious changes. It seemed that he was just temporarily stunned by the action and was now normal again. Although both were confused about what had just happened, they had other things to worry about.
"...Yeah, let's start the game." As much as Shigaraki did not like what just happened, he had plans to execute. They began to warp away one by one until they were all gone.
Kurogiri was the last one to leave, shaking his head as a voice that sounded both familiar and foreign sounded in his mind like a lost memory. He couldn't understand it like it was speaking a different language but at the same time he felt like he knew it.
'What did Grim do to me?' He shook his head and headed through the portal. He'd worry about it later. He had orders to fulfil. Bu the tiny voice that now resided in the back of his head continued to whisper.
'ₗₑₜₛ bₑ ₕₑᵣₒₑₛ ₜₒgₑₜₕₑᵣ!'
-At USJ-
"Everyone, I've been waiting for you."
The way Yuuma's eyes lit up as the admiration that began to flow off of him in waves was almost too much for the other students to bear. Izuku was having his own fanboy moment beside him, hands covering his mouth as he recognized the Pro before him. Before he could announce it however, Yuuma beat him to the punch.
"It's Thirteen! We're learning from Space Hero: Thirteen! She's… she's amazing! We are learning to rescue from Thirteen!" Yuuma gushed, a rare show of emotions and giddy-ness on his usually subdued features. His eyes were practically shining at this point. Yuuma was ecstatic that they would be receiving teachings from the renowned rescue hero. Aside from his parents, Thirteen was one of Yuuma's idols. As he wanted to be a rescue hero too, she was one of the heroes that stuck out to him.
She was passionate about quirks and how they could be used in such situations, and to train heroes in search and rescue she created the wonder they now stood in. Aizawa gave a curt glance at the child, working hard to suppress the smile that was creeping across his face.
'He looks like a normal kid when he's like that. It's nice to see so happy.' Aizawa thought warmly, his eyes softening a tad before going back into teacher mode.
"Wow! This place looks like Universal Studios Japan (USJ)!" Kirishima stated, the others silently agreeing with him.
The moment Yuuma stepped foot into the enormous building however, he felt on edge.
He tried to ignore the nagging feeling that something was wrong in favor of how happy and excited his classmates were to be doing rescue exercises. He too was very excited for today, as rescuing was one of the main focuses he wanted to have as a hero. He didn't like confrontation, and he liked to help people. Rescuing just seemed right to him.
So, he pushed the nagging feeling at the back of his mind away to listen to their instructor for the day.
"A shipwreck, a landslide, a fire, a windstorm, and et cetera. Welcome to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint, or as I like to call it, The USJ!" She exclaimed, her voice sounding like it was coming through a radio thanks to her space-like hero costume.
'It really is USJ' They sweat dropped a little. Yuuma on the other hand was nothing but a ray of sunshine as his eagerness to learn from the hero grew to epic proportions. The sparkles he was giving off with his eyes was just like when he was a toddler, Izuku and Katsuki welcomed the sight.
Although Katsuki was quick to turn away from him; soft does not exist in his vocabulary.
'This place was amazing!' Yuuma's eyes widened in wonder as he took it all in. The place was teeming with different areas: A flooded area, one that was on fire, rocky mountains and trenches, heck, they even had a hurricane in one area! He didn't notice that Thirteen and Aizawa had a small, quiet talk about a certain number 1 hero not being able to make it.
"Let's see… before we begin let me say one thing… er… two, or three, or four… five… six… seven—"
'It's increasing…!'
'More to learn!' Yuuma mentally cheered.
After getting all of her points in order, Thirteen began. "Everyone, I am sure you are aware of my Quirk, Black Hole. I can suck up anything and turn it to dust."
"You've been able to use that Quirk to save people from all kinds of disasters, right?" Izuku answered, his fanboy knowledge showing. Uraraka and Yuuma were nodding vigorously, the others trying not to concentrate on how cute that was.
"Yes, but it is a power that can kill easily." Thirteen answered, effectively making the mood more serious. "Some of you also have Quirks like that, right?"
Yuuma couldn't help but think back to when he woke up in the hospital after the incident. How the walls of the room cracked and shook with his violent wails. He knew all too well how dangerous his quirk was. Unconsciously, he clenched and unclenched his fist, giving Thirteen his full, undivided attention.
"With Aizawa's physical fitness test, you found out the possibilities of your own hidden powers, and with All Might's person-to-person combat training, I think you experienced the danger of using those powers against others." Everyone's attention was on the Space Hero as she continued her speech, all of them remembering their experience with their Quirks.
"This class is a fresh start. You shall learn how to use your Quirks to save people's lives." Yuuma's eyes widened, awash with admiration. "You do not have powers so you can harm others. I hope you leave here with the understanding that you have powers in order to help others."
'Thirteen is so cool!' Yuuma and Izuku thought in unison, their eyes shining with a new level of respect. She gave a gentlemanly bow, "That is all. Thank you for listening."
"That was wonderful!" Uraraka gushed, the crowd giving their applause for the wonderful speech. Yuuma let a smile escape him as he looked forward to the lesson, but then the feeling hit him again. Even stronger than before.
The feeling of foreboding.
It was like a sudden wave of ominous energy had dropped on him like a bucket of cold water. Something felt twisted and vile, and it made Yuuma feel nauseous. This was much worse than that sludge villain incident a while back. Yuuma was trying to catch his breath, but it felt like he was suffocating in mud!
"W-what is this?" Izuku and Katsuki's eyes zeroed in on the younger boy as his face paled and his eyes widened. "Zawa!" He called desperately, catching the attention of everyone. They bypassed the fact that he called Aizawa that cute name in lieu of how distraught he sounded. "Something's wrong!"
"Kid? What's wrong with you?" They'd never heard the older man use such a soft tone before. What was their relationship? Were they actually related?! But now wasn't the time, Yuuma looked frantic. What had caused him to end up like that. He looked like he'd just watched something terrifying. There was dread on his face and not a small amount of fear.
"T-there... Down there!" He pointed, the dread clear in his tone. He'd felt it, almost instinctually. This sickening presence. It didn't seem like anyone else had noticed the shift in the air. How could they not feel that? It was one of the most vile things Yuuma had ever sensed before.
It scared him.
"Wha—"
The lights went out before he could finish the question, and he too could sense the ominous presence behind him. His eyes narrowed at the fountain down the stairs of the facility, where a dark mass had appeared. Yuuma always did have a high level of perception. At first it was chocked up to it developing due to the incident, but that wasn't the case. He could sense ill-intent. And if he was like this due to the sheer amount he was feeling then—
"Gather together and don't move! Thirteen, protect the students." He pulled his goggles down and got into battle stance. The question didn't need to be asked. Aizawa knew what was going on.
"Roger." She said, getting into her own battle position.
"What's that?" Kirishima asked, gazing down the stairs. Everyone else followed suit, seeing what he was seeing. From within the blackish portal, people started to appear. All of them varying shapes and sizes most likely due to their quirks. Everyone was wondering if this was a part of the exercise.
"Is this like the entrance exam where the lesson already started?" Kirishima guessed, albeit very wrongly.
"N-no, Kirishima-san." Yuuma said, trying to get his wits about him as the fear creeped in. This caused them all to look at him, finally noticing how pale he seemed. But the child steeled himself and readied his own stance. He trained for this, he had his weapons and medical kits, he was glad that he came prepared for almost anything.
"Their energy is full of malicious intent…" Izuku and Katsuki's eyes widened with realization and not a small degree of panic.
Yuuma could see energy, and that energy reflected emotions and intentions. If that's what he was seeing then that meant—
"Don't move!" Aizawa ordered. Everyone was now on high alert as the truth of the situation began to sink in. This was why he'd been feeling on edge since before. The sense of foreboding had been for this very moment.
The USJ was being attacked by villains.
