Disclaimer: I own nothing from either One Piece or Naruto, and I claim nothing.
Note: For those leaving nice reviews, thank you! (Especially YOU, who is wondering if Sakura is a rebel...I hope this answers your questions. I'm so sorry.)
For those who insist this is shit, you're entitled to your opinion. I just don't give a shit anymore, lmao. Feel free to block and not read or whatever?
Anyway, summary of chapter: Some backstory is revealed through flashbacks, as always. Implications of dark shit, specifically rape and abuse. Also, genocide.
And of course not all the Konoha nin would show their ass for the World Government. It would only make sense for many of them to become rebels.
Chapter 5: Left Behind
"We have decided: For your crimes against the World Government, and by extension, Konohagakure—you three are banished, for life. If you ever step inside this village again, you will be killed on sight."
Hinata's eyes widened, her pulse thumping loudly in her ears as Danzo slammed his gravel against the podium, making the whole courtroom explode in sound. Many roared at the injustice—a majority of them being friends and allies to the shinobi—while those who sided with the World Government were shouting with cheers, even the occasional demand for the teenagers' heads.
She whirled her head to throw a look at her left. Sakura was already crying, her eyes shining as tears flowed freely down her cheeks. Then her eyes clenched closed, her head tilting forward as her mouth opened to let out sorrowful wails. Feeling a stab in her chest, Hinata threw another desperate look at her right—at the one she was certain would have some sort of plan, something to stop what was happening—but Naruto was frozen, his blue eyes still tilted up to stare up at Danzo. His gaze was so frighteningly vacant, his mouth parted in a frozen expression of disbelief and, ultimately, heartbreak. His hands, which were still shackled with chains wrapped in the wards that managed to suppress the Kyuubi, clenched so tight that you could hear the knuckles crack. Hinata felt her throat swell, her eyes beginning to prick with tears. Releasing a shuddering breath, she could only turn her head forward, her face tilted so her eyes were facing the floor.
How? How was it possible that everything could go so wrong, so fast…?
Hinata wasn't allowed any more time to think about it. Before she realized, Danzo said a sharp order and then a marine was grasping at the bend of her arm, fingers digging into the inside of her elbow. With barely a grunt, the man began nearly dragging Hinata out of the courtroom. Her heart pounded with dread, her breathing short and her eyes darted back to Naruto, who began fighting against the marines holding him immediately, his eyes lit up in rage and his mouth parting to roar profanity at the men holding him. Sakura began screaming, kicking when the marines grabbed her, her expression almost resembling someone possessed. When another marine jumped in to grab the ankle of the leg kicking outward, he began to help carry her out, unfazed by how Sakura's cries increased in pitch.
Hinata's knees almost buckled, reality hitting her again and again—and even then, nothing about this felt real.
"…Nee-san!"
Hinata blinked, hearing one voice clearly over all the others. She turned to see Hanabi standing in the mezzanine of the courthouse, her eyes full of years but her face contorted in a mix of fury and hopelessness. Standing next to her, tall and expression hardened, was Hiashi—who could only reveal his true feelings through his gleaming eyes. Hinata stared into his eyes, her heart trembling with a tinge of shame and the childish urge to cry out for him.
Before she could, another voice rang out.
"Hinata!" Kiba roared from his place next to her family, next to Kurenai and Shino, his gaze watery but unwavering. "Don't give up! We'll find a way to fix this, okay? Just hold on in the meantime, and we'll find you."
At this Hinata choked, her eyes resting on each of her loved ones. There was so much she wanted to say to them, but not enough time. It made her think of that night, before she met Sakura and Naruto in that restaurant—before they ran into those Marines. Before their lives were ruined.
"Hey, you wanna hang with us for a bit? We're going to the barbecue place, the one with all the meat!"
"Mm, not tonight. I have to go meet Sakura and Naruto tonight…"
"Aw, fine. But you better hang with us, next time!"
"It's almost like we barely see you these days," Shino added, his stoic voice hinting at a rare petulance.
Hinata smiled at them both, a little sheepish. "I know, I know. I'm sorry—I promise to make it up to both of you!"
I should have stayed with you, Hinata thought, her eyes tearfully gazing up at her family and best friends, even as the marine dragged her away. She thought of that awful, awful night and her chest swelled with regret. As the doors closed, as she took her last glimpses of her family, teacher, and friends—of Konoha—Hinata closed her eyes and lowered her head, tears rolling down her cheeks as she turned away. I should have been with all of you. I'm so sorry…
While sitting on the edge of the plush queen size bed, Hinata can't help but stare at Nami's back while the taller woman searches through the closet. She stares and stares, her throat growing dry as she starts gnawing at her lip. She feels the need to say something, but she can't figure out what she wants to say—what she could say. Hinata starts tapping her fingers against her bare knee and then forces her eyes away, to try distracting herself with the small bedroom. Her eyes fall first to the black overcoat Luffy gave her, which Nami insisted she remove as soon as she stepped inside the room, easily directed from the dimly lit hallway as Usopp and Sanji walked back to the main area of the suite, both sending her a grin and a wave as the door closed.
Hinata stares at the overcoat, along with the golden straw hat sitting atop it, and she feels nothing except utterly naked in her underthings. Despite being in front of Nami, someone she considered a close friend two years ago, she can't recall another moment when she felt more vulnerable. She's not sure if this is a feeling she likes.
"Oh, this is perfect!" Nami finally exclaims before pulling out a black top and a dark pleated skirt on a hanger. She turns to Hinata with a beam, waving the skirt in one hand. "And it's in your color, too!"
Blinking, Hinata turns to look at the skirt—the vertical and horizontal meeting of dark purple and black—and a pleasant buzzing settles in her stomach. She does like the color. Then her eyes go to the top, a tiny black thing that's more like a bra than anything else with silk like strings crossing over each other in the middle, and heat suddenly shoots to her cheeks. If she wears those clothes, well—that's a lot of skin she'd be showing.
It's then Hinata recalls what sort of club she and the Strawhats are in, and some of the fluster gathering in her stomach fades away. Perhaps this sort of clothing is parr for the course…?
But that just makes me wonder, once again, she thinks, her eyes falling again on Nami. What are they doing here?!
In all the time that she'd known them, which had been pretty brief to be fair, Hinata didn't get the feel that any of the Strawhats would be interested in sex or anything relating to relationships—mostly and especially Luffy. Far as Naruto had informed her, the young captain had no sexual bone in his body. So, how had Eustass Kid tricked him or the rest of the crew into coming to this club, of all places in Tortuga?
And just when she mysteriously ended up here too…hang on.
Hinata then remembers something Nami said, and her heart gives an uneasy thump. She looks up, catching Nami as she lays the clothes out on the bed and finally, she opens her mouth to speak.
"Um…Nami?"
Surprisingly Nami nearly jolts, looking up with wide brown eyes. "A-are the clothes okay? I can search for something else—"
"Eh? No, they're fine, thank you," Hinata replies in a stammer, unsure why Nami is so nervous. "I-I just wanted to ask you about…that call? The one you got on the transponder snail?"
"Oh! Right, of course, sorry I—I'm not even sure where to start." Nami rubs the back of her neck and then walks over to gently sit next to Hinata, her face soft with worry. "Does the name Kiba Inuzuka mean anything to you?"
Hinata freezes, her heart stopping for one sickening second. Her mind flashes to Kiba and how they used to sneak out at night to train secretly, how Akamaru would nuzzle her head in greeting. How she and Shino used to shop together for books to read. How Kurenai smiled so softly down at her, how they spoke late into the night after Hinata helped put her daughter to bed.
It's so funny how so many happy memories, with so many people can be attached to one name.
"K-Kiba? How…? Is he okay?!" Hinata asks, her mind rushing to all sorts of scenarios.
"So you do know him," Nami says, sounding relieved as her shoulders slump.
"He's an old friend. B-but how do you know him?"
"Well, he's partially the reason we were able to get out of Wano with little casualties. Him and the other Konoha nin in the Revolutionary army, I mean."
Beat.
"…What."
"Okay, we've taken care of this one. Let's go work on the next one," Kiba is shouting at the crowd around him—a mix of Konoha nin and anyone from Wano who is able to work—and closing off the blueprints for the building behind him, the most recent one to be rebuilt.
"Yes, sir, Inuzuka-san!"
With a curt nod but a wide grin, Kiba watches them all line up and begin gathering debris from the next building. After a moment, he lets out a sigh and rakes a hand through his hair. For all the good they're doing, he can't help but feel the fatigue weighing on his shoulders. For him and his group, it's been a long day so far helping in the post-war effort. With Wano still recovering from the war with Kaido and the Beast Pirates, only the gods can know how long it would take for the country to fully recover—let alone how long it'd be before he could return to base, with the other Revolutionaries.
Still, he can't help but think with a soft smile as he looks over at all the smiling faces, the people laughing with each other and loved ones holding each other—eventually pausing at all the kids climbing Akamaru's back and giggling as the giant dog happily wags his tail—and his chest grows warm. At least the company's nice.
"This whole thing is gonna be troublesome," a familiar voice speaks out next to him.
Speaking of company…
Kiba chuckles instantly, turning to his right. "Yeah, but look at all those faces—it's totally worth it, isn't it?"
Shikamaru shrugs, barely hiding the little smile around his cigarette. "I guess. Beats sitting on my ass back home and kneeling to the government shills."
"Any day of the week." Kiba thinks for a moment before he remembers something, his expression getting serious. "Any news on…?"
"There's some, Ino just commed me a minute ago," Shikamaru replies before pausing to take a drag of his cigarette. As he exhales, his mouth spreads into a smile. "She's safe. The Strawhats got her."
Thank God, Kiba lets out a sigh, then a chuckle. Hinata might still be with pirates, but at least she's with pirates she not only knows but a crew that has the trust of Wano's people and then some. It's not a perfect outcome, but it's more ideal than the worst case scenario. He doesn't know how he would explain to Hanabi his possible failure when he'd return to base—let alone how Hiashi would react if Hinata had remained unsafe.
"Tell Ino that I owe her the biggest drink imaginable. Doesn't matter how fruity it is, if she wants it, I'll get it for her!"
"I'll make sure to pass it along," Shikamaru says. "But that segues into another discussion—about what we're going to do about Naruto."
Shit. Of course they have to have that conversation—the one they've been avoiding for months. The one that everyone in the Revolution, anyone connected to Konoha at least, has been avoiding.
"…You really think he's a concern?"
Shikamaru takes another drag of his cigarette. As he exhales out the smoke, he moves his cigarette to let the excess ash and embers fall and die onto the grass. He then inhales another sigh, his gaze looking more weary than Kiba has seen in months.
"Kiba, you weren't at Mariejois. You didn't see what Naruto and his crew did."
Despite his doubts, Kiba begins to break out into a cold sweat at hearing the name of the Celestial Dragons' so-called holy land. Not really because of the Celestial Dragons themselves, but because of what happened there, exactly two weeks ago.
"We still have no proof that it was Naruto who orchestrated all that," he says, almost desperately. "The Government is saying it was actually one of Blackbeard's generals who did it on the crazy bastard's behalf."
"C'mon, man. You know that's just a farce."
"B-but, why though? All that death and, a-and—what they did to those people? That doesn't sound like the Naruto we knew!"
Shikamaru drops his cigarette, and then steps on it, his voice straining. "The Naruto we knew changed. What he did to Hinata is proof of that."
At that, Kiba has no counterargument. Just the memory of Ino relaying the information about where the Fox crew was transporting Hinata, her voice full of desperation and fear, it makes him feel sick all over again.
Hinata almost went through hell…again.
She's safe now. She's safe, he has to remind himself, to keep his breathing calm. Then his gaze hardens. And she won't have to worry about what happens next.—
"…Well, you know what we have to do then. We have to make that call to our fearless leader."
"God, do you have to call him that?" Shikamaru snaps, his mouth twisting into a sneer.
"What? That's who he is—at least until Sabo comes back from his mission in Alabasta," Kiba chuckles, albeit humorlessly. "Besides, you know that if there's one person who can get through to Naruto and fix this, it would be him."
Shikamaru lets out another groan, tipping his head back as he glowers up at the sky—likely, in some way, hoping that the spiky haired one armed bastard would feel its heat—and rasping out, "So fucking troublesome."
"…Have they answered yet?"
"Not yet," Law sighs before casting a look at Luffy. "Just be patient. They might not even be in range, if they ever were."
Luffy grunts, his mouth twisted into a frown, and then continues pacing around the room with his fists shoved in his pockets.
"What the hell could be keeping them so busy anyway?" he grumbles.
"They're probably on their way to their next island, or preparing to, anyway," Kid scoffs before frowning deeply. "Might even make the next one another repeat of what they did to those nobles."
Luffy's frown deepens, his gaze going dim. Then he blinks, shooting a look over at Kidd. "Hang on, why are you still here?"
"Uh…pretty sure you invited me, dude."
"No, I fucking didn't. Don't you have something else better to do?"
"Well, I did—but then I found out she wasn't there of her own free will, and believe it or not, that rape shit ain't my thing. Unless it's roleplay. And involves toys," Kidd adds with a hungry grin, his eyes gleaming. "But maybe after we confirm that Uzumaki dumped her, she might wanna get rid of some of that…frustration."
Luffy's left eye twitches before he narrows his gaze while growling, "Get that out of your head now. Hinata's not that kind of girl."
"You don't know that. She might surprise you."
"And what makes you think you're going to find out, ya jagged ass punk?!"
"Why's it your business anyway, dumbass monkey?! Not like you're her boyfriend, or whatever!" Kidd snarls as he stands up, looming over Luffy as he glares.
"She's part of my crew, so that makes her my business!"
"Oh, that's such bullshit! So if I wanna bang your navigator or Robin, I gotta get through you?!"
Luffy bursts out laughing, his smirk wide and holding a tinge of cruelty. "Please, like they'd even want to touch your bum ass—"
Kidd growls, his eyes flashing red for a second. "Motherfucker—"
"Are you two finished yet?" Law drawls, sounding bored. "Or are we going to keep acting like we're in middle school?"
Just then, there's a bit of static came from the transponder snail.
"Hello…?" says Sakura, sounding hesitant.
Luffy lets out a gasp, then opens his mouth to speak—but then stops when he sees Law send him a look, his golden eyes flashing. When the older man shakes his head at both Luffy and Kidd, the signal is even more clear; Sakura should not know if there's anyone else in the room.
Frowning, Luffy steps back while Kidd watches with new interest. Law quickly turns back to the transponder snail.
"Hey, it's me," he says.
"Oh, Law! It's been a while since I heard from you," she croons sweetly. "How are you?"
Luffy frowns at hearing Sakura's voice—something about it feels…wrong—but upon seeing the look Law sends him again, he forces his mouth to stay closed. Crossing his arms over his chest, he leans against the wall across the room and listens.
"Can't complain," Law replies casually. "You?"
"Better now that you've called. I've been looking forward to continuing that conversation we were having on Saobody," Sakura says in a near purr. "Have you reconsidered my offer?"
Luffy pauses at that, his brows twisting as his eyes squint. Offer…?
Law's frown deepens, a brief shadow casting over his gaze. "The answer is still no, Haruno—and you can tell that to Fox-ya, too."
Sakura goes silent for a beat. Then she clicks her tongue against the back of her teeth, letting out a sigh that's a mix of disappointment and disgust.
"Fine, whatever. The fuck you want, then?" she asks in a tone that Luffy finds himself flinching when he hears it. Was she always so…cold? What happened to that tough but soft-hearted co-healer who worked with Chopper two years ago? "I'm busy, so make it quick."
"I just wanted to let you know I ran into that friend of yours. The quiet girl on your crew? She's at this club and—"
"Was she alone?"
Law blinks at the odd tone in her voice. He casts a glance at Luffy, then Kidd, and his eyes linger on the latter. An idea tickles the back of his mind—one that makes him sick to his stomach, just a little bit—but he can't help but follow the hunch.
"No," he replies. "Eustass-ya was with her—"
Sakura suddenly bursts out giggling.
Luffy's blood goes cold. What.
"Holy shit! Eustass Kidd? Of the Kidd Pirates?" her laughter increases, almost into a cackle. "Oh, what a riot! Was he making her cry? I bet he was, he looks like the sort who makes girls like her cry…"
Law blinks at the snail, unsure what to feel. Once again he glances around at Kidd—whose expression is blank—and settles on Luffy, who has gone pale, his fists clenching.
"Naruto, did you hear that?"
There's a silence, then a rustle from across the room. Luffy stares at the transponder snail, swallowing hard.
"What's that?" Naruto rasps, sounding so tired—like after one of those nights he and Luffy would spend in Alabasta, talking about how to beat Crocodile and Naruto's growing feelings for Vivi—"What's going on…?"
"Law says he found Hinata at that place I sent her," Sakura giggles. "Says Eustass Kidd was with her."
"Oh."
Another beat. Luffy watches more intently.
C'mon, man. Say something. Prove all those rumors about you wrong, he thinks, his frown twisting. Prove this bad feeling I'm having wrong.
"Tell him the bastard can keep her. I definitely have no more use for her." With a snort, he adds, "Maybe the little traitor will actually grow into a pirate."
Luffy feels his stomach drop to his feet, a hot emotion settling into his veins and beginning to feed that slight craving for blood he's always had. The fuck? That's all he can think as his teeth grind, as his fists begin to clench. The FUCK?
("Strawhat, I'll join your crew but only on one condition…")
A growl begins to rise from his chest, words on his tongue, ready for him to roar out—but before Luffy can snap and reveal himself, Kidd's hand slaps against his mouth. He rolls his eyes to send a raging glare up at Kidd, who scowls back at him, then his dark eyes dart over to glower at Law. Law frowns scornfully at him, then places his index finger first against his mouth and then he starts spinning it in the air.
"We need to keep him talking," he mouths, barely speaking above a whisper.
Luffy of course glares harder, because honestly, fuck that plan. All he wants to do right now is go find Naruto and Sakura, and rip their faces off. And he makes sure to put all of those thoughts into his murderous gaze, already straining against Kidd's hold, letting out low grunts of effort.
Law rolls his eyes and with a tired sigh, he lifts a hand and whispers, "Room." And then, "Silence."
And just like that, Luffy is surrounded by a blue, transparent barrier and in a space where he can hear sounds, but no one can hear him. Inside the barrier, he growls again and then lets out a roar only he can hear, proceeding to punch fruitlessly at the barrier surrounding him.
"What the hell was that…?" Naruto asks, sounding suspicious.
Now free to use both of his hands, Kidd scowls at Luffy then looks over at Law with a curt nod—and then he looks over at the snail with a plastic grin.
"Oh, don't worry, Fox," he speaks up in a chuckle, adding some extra cruelty into his voice. "That was just one of my subordinates in the next room—they're all taking good care of that girl of yours."
There's an uncomfortable silence, but only a moment. "Like I told Law," Naruto replies, his voice still cold. "She isn't mine anymore. You can do whatever the hell you want with her, just leave me out of it."
One of Kidd's eyebrows twitches, his grin near faltering before he chuckles again. "Well, that's good to hear. She's a real treat, that one. Why'd you let her go so easily—?"
"—Sakura, I'm done here. Can you just end this already?"
"…Yeah, sure. I'll take it from here."
"Thanks. I need a fucking drink…" Naruto's voice fades off as he stomps out of the room.
Kidd blinks at that reaction, then looks over at Law, whose brows are furrowed.
"Sorry, guys," Sakura says in a near whining voice. "The Captain's still feeling sore about what Hinata did—so we'd both really appreciate it if you never mention her name anywhere near him again. In fact, act like she's dead. That's even better."
Law's nose pinched, a semblance of disgust rising in him. These two are willing to throw away one of their crew that easily? Over what? He can't imagine a reason to throw a crewmember away, other than a serious offense such as murdering another crewmate or perhaps planning a mutiny. But Hinata—she doesn't seem that type of person. In fact, reputation wise, she's known to be loyal to Naruto to a fault. So, what?
Fuck, he's not even sure he wants to know the reason now—but with one glance over at Luffy, who still looks angry but clearly wanting answers, he knows he's got to follow this through.
"Apologies about that," he says, making his voice softer, in a way he knows would appeal to Sakura. "Kidd and I just can't help but be curious about her and what led to her being in a place like The Goblin Market."
Sakura snorts, her smirk audible in her reply, "Well, if you get a chance—if she's even able to speak after all that—just ask her. Ask her about what happened on Mariejois."
All three captains freeze at the name, their eyes finding each other in a moment of mutual bemusement and foreboding. Mariejois, the capital of the World Government, the holy land of the Celestial Dragons. Also the location where one of the most brutal massacres occurred about two weeks ago, of one of the most renown world noble families and anyone loyal to them.
There had been many rumors about who was behind it, but it's clear now who the apparent culprits are.
Sakura lets out a chilling giggle at the silence.
"If that's all, I've gotta go waste my time somewhere else. Bye, losers~"
And with a click, the transponder snail closes its eyes and signals the call cutting off, leaving a rather numb silence. Staring ahead, lost in thought, Law sinks back into his chair. Kidd glares off to the side, focusing his glower at a spot on the wall. Luffy is then released from Law's devil fruit powers, but even he doesn't know how to react. His mind rushes at all the information revealed in the call, his stomach twisting in knots at what he feels is the worst one: Hinata was abandoned by her crew, by two people she's known since she was a kid, for reasons still pretty unclear.
Luffy can't help but think of the worst case scenario. What if he hadn't found Hinata in time? What if she'd been with someone worse than Kidd, someone who didn't care to notice that she was in this place against her will? And Naruto and Sakura would have just—left her there. Like she meant nothing to them at all, after all this time.
("...Strawhat, I'll join your crew but only on one condition," is what Hinata said, all bruised from their fight in the gladiator ring she'd been sold to, her white eyes burning to a near silver from a curtain of black. "There are two others who were with me, who are still on the island before this one. You have to help me save them. Do that, and you will have two of the best and strongest shinobi I know at your service.")
Fuck. His jaw clenches, already thinking of how Hinata is going to react. Fuck, how am I going to tell her…?
