He has gills, that is obvious.

They run tests so his superiors, his government may know the depth of his loyalty. He is not a communist, he is not. He does what he can so they will know this.

Through his back he cannot inhale, can only exhale. What seeps out are nitrogen and carbon dioxide, those deepwater dangers. He needs SCUBA gear underwater, but he will never suffer the bends or nitrogen narcosis. Loyal, he would help his country, if only they would ask.

Is it the returnee they do not trust, or the defected soldier?
