The creamy, glossy, white of the invitation's front made him sick. It was far too bright, cheery, and altogether happy.
He hadn't even brought himself to open it yet.
Because if he did, things would change.
Reading that card would make it real.
The ring wasn't proof enough, nor was her constant wedding plan chatter with Angela.
No, once he knew the date, there was no going back.
Once he knew the date, he could deny it no longer.
And for the time being, he was enjoying denial. It was a hell of a lot better than accepting the truth. This way, there was that tiny, miniscule sliver of hope that he could cling to.
He took a deep breath, reached out, and lifted the face of the card, revealing an equally white – equally sickening – sight.

It didn't look right. It didn't fit.
His eyes darted to the date.
April 15.
He catalogued it in his brain before hurriedly shoving the invitation haphazardly back into the envelope. The bright white seemed to be mocking him somehow, and he tossed the card into the drawer of the end table before lying across the couch.
After staring at the ceiling for a moment, he gave a bitter, wry laugh and shut his eyes.
He just couldn't get away from the white.
