Chapter Three
Welcome to W.O.O.H.P
Beverly Hills High-10:17 AM
Before any of them knew it, Clover had led them to one of hundreds of purple lockers lining the hallway. Sean was especially glad the locker in question was 318.
Looks like she made my job easier, he thought.
Quickly turning his back, he took out a black wallet-shaped device and opened it.
Pressing a button on the inside, he faced the girls again without them even noticing that he turned around.
Clover pulled out a remote and pressed a button on the bottom.
Suddenly, like magic, the locker door began to pull out, revealing a rack containing a long line of girl's clothes, underneath it was a shelf where numerous skirts were stored. Below that were four different pairs of various footwear. It came complete with a purple curtain for changing.
"I have at least ten backup outfits stashed in my locker!" she explained with pride.
Sean's jaw dropped.
"Ten outfits?!" Sam asked with wonder. "Now that's what I call resourceful!"
"Yeah, Clover!" Alex concurred. "You're like a one-woman wardrobe department!"
Sean was looking between the makeshift closet and its owner with shock.
"But how... when..."
But he calmed himself down and said, "On second thought, forget it. I don't need to know."
Sam picked out an outfit from the rack.
"But before we change," Alex interrupted. "Shouldn't we do something about Mandy?"
"Oh, we'll deal with her later," Clover promised, emerging from the changing booth with a new outfit that included a pink sleeveless top and what Sean guessed were designer jeans.
"When she like least expects it."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Sean asked. "Mandy's mom is friends with Miss Scrich. She's her favorite student. Well, the one she hates the least, anyway."
"No worries," Clover reassured. "She won't even know it was us."
Soon enough, Sam and Alex were changed as well.
And it was at that time that a low rumbling began to shake the hallway, catching all but one of the four teens off guard.
Clover leaned against her locker.
"Either that coffee just seeped into my central nervous system," she commented. "Or we're having a major earthquake!"
Sam crouched on the ground, obviously thinking the latter was occurring.
"Or maybe it's another one of Mandy's evil tricks!" Alex suggested as she leaned against the wall next to a water cooler.
Here we go, Sean thought.
The locker doors swung open, a massive vortex of air sucking them into one of them.
Clover was the first one in, clinging to edges of the other lockers for dear life.
Sam was the next.
But Alex held on to a water cooler that Sean lightly clung to as well.
"Quick, girls!" Alex shouted to the other two. "Form a human chain!"
Following her suggestion, Sam linked her hand with Alex's, and Clover, albeit with a little more effort, repeated the gesture with Sam's hand.
"Hey!" Alex exclaimed. "What do you know?! My plan worked!"
But as if Murphy's Law decided to prove her wrong, the water tank she and Sean held onto came loose, soaking all four of them and causing them to lose their grip.
All four were sucked into the locker and down a chute that, to Sean was very familiar.
"Okay!" Sam said over all the screaming. "Nobody panic!"
Sean wasn't, of course, but he had to keep up the act until Jerry got to them.
At the end of the ride, all four teens landed in certain office, on a plush circular cushion.
To Sean, this was nothing new. But the girls? That was another story.
"Whoa!" Clover exclaimed. "What is this place?"
"I don't know," Alex said. "But is anyone else catching a serious alien vibe?"
Sean facepalmed. That wasn't even close!
"I doubt it has anything to do with , Alex," Sam countered. "Whatever the vibe is, it's definitely spooky."
Sam got up and looked around, the others following suit.
Clover snapped her fingers.
"Wait a sec! I bet we're on some reality TV prank show! This is L.A after all!"
She looked for the nearest reflective surface.
"I am so not camera ready!"
"Uh, Clover?" Sean interrupted. "Somehow, I don't think that's case."
More accurately, he knew it wasn't the case. But since Jerry wasn't in his office at the moment, he had to stall for time.
OK. So, they're rough around the edges, but if Jerry thinks they're spy material, I'll go along with what he thinks is best.
Alex, in the meantime, was looking at the screen behind the desk, looking at the blueprints numerous gadgets that were currently being developed.
"The Sweat-Sensor Lie Detector? The Human Memory Eraser? GLO.S.S :Global Satellite Surveillance System?"
She turned back to the others.
"I don't know, guys, I get the feeling this place is no joke."
Sean looked at her in shock.
Is she starting to put it together? Maybe these girls are better than I give them credit for.
Sam went behind the desk, opening a drawer.
"Whoa!" she exclaimed, taking something out. "Check this out!"
The others rushed over to her looking at the drawer and its contents.
To the untrained eye, they were ordinary office supplies.
But to Sean, they were a little more... special than that.
"Huh? What's the 911, Sammy?" Clover asked.
"Yeah," Alex agreed. "What's so exciting about a bunch of boring office supplies?"
In response, Sam clicked the pen she took out, opening and extending a miniature satellite transmitter that began to whirl around slowly.
"Whoa!" Alex sounded awed. She took a purple staple remover from the drawer.
This one, Sean instantly recognized.
"Uh, Alex, I wouldn't..."
But he was too late. The girl had pressed the button that activated the gadget, letting a white laser beam fly out.
Sean, Sam, and Clover ducked, hoping to avoid the being hit with the laser.
Rough around the edges? Sean thought. More like jagged.
But he made a mental note that could be fixed with a little training.
After a while, thankfully, the laser ran out of power and harmlessly fell to the floor.
A door opened off to their left, letting in a plume of red smoke and lighting that obscured the two figures entering.
Jerry always did like theatrics, Sean mused to himself.
The girls screamed and hid behind the desk.
"I told you we were abducted by aliens!" Alex shouted.
"Okay," Sean said loudly. "You can stop now! They're not gonna listen to you if you scare them like this."
The girls peered out from their hiding place; confusion written all over their faces.
Jerry pressed a button a remote that he was carrying, dissipating the smoke and turning the light in the room back to normal.
"Sorry about, that, ladies," he said politely. Then he focused on Alex, specifically.
"And actually, the aliens are down in the freezer."
Sean backed up to the desk, reminding himself to not go down there.
"Ahem," Jerry announced. "We're agents."
A younger man, a few years older than Sean stepped out from behind Jerry. His skin was tan, with brown hair, green eyes and a very dazzling smile.
Sean was surprised that Jerry brought him here.
"Hi, girls!" Tad greeted.
All at once, Clover's face changed to the same one she gave Sean back in the hallway.
She squealed in delight. Then popped up beside him.
"And totally cute ones at that!"
Then her face turn disheartened.
"Oh, I wish I'd remembered my headshot!"
Sean chuckled.
"Clover," he said. "They're not talent agents. They're secret agents."
The girls' jaws were now on the floor.
"Secret agents?" Alex asked. "As in..."
"Spies," Sean confirmed.
He gestured to Jerry.
"I'm Jerry and this is Tad. And I see you've already met Sean."
"YOU"RE A SPY?!" all three girls exclaimed in unison looking at him.
"Well, sort of," he answered. "I really just train new recruits. Anyway, welcome to W.O.O.H.P, girls."
The girls looked at each other for a moment, then without warning, burst into laughter.
"I don't care who you are," Sam said, calming down. "I demand to know why we've been brought here!"
"And I demand to know what a W.O.O.H.P is!" Alex added.
Jerry snapped his fingers, letting the screen behind his desk light up, showing the W.O.O.H.P Headquarters building, shaped like a giant "W'.
"W.O.O.H.P stands for World Organization of Human Protection," he explained. "A top secret institute aimed at fighting global crime."
The screen went dark again.
He leaned forward.
"You three are here because you've been chosen to join our elite group of international spies."
"Yeah, right!" Clover said, in an unbelieving tone. "Just because we live in Beverly Hills now doesn't mean we're stupid."
"No one said you were, Clover," Sean pointed out.
"Very true," Jerry agreed with Sean. "After monitoring you, Sam, and Alex for years, I've determined you have quite the aptitude for espionage."
The screen lit up again showing three different scenarios of the girls when they were much younger. Elementary school age, Sean deduced.
Sam solving a Rubik's Cube in record time.
Clover sneaking her mother's journal right out from under her nose.
And Alex doing a backflip on a jungle gym and landing on her feet at the playground flawlessly.
"And so, not only did I arrange for you to be transferred to Bev High," Jerry continued. "But I also arranged the sushi test you took earlier, during which, I must say you displayed an impressive amount of potential."
"So that's what it was," Sean said, under his breath, impressed.
Clover, on the other hand was furious.
"You monitored us?! Hello, creepy much?! Okay, that's it, I'm calling the cops!"
She took out a bright pink cell phone and flipped it open.
But an image of Jerry was on the screen.
"If you ladies don't wish to be spies, you don't have to," he said.
They jumped up, surprised.
"Well, that's good," Alex said. "Because we so don't!"
"Yeah," Clover agreed with Alex. "Moving to a new city is stressy enough. The whole extracurricular spy biz just doesn't fit in to my schedule."
She stuck out her tongue, closing her phone.
"Speaking of schedules," Sam chimed in. "We really need to be getting back to school."
"You know, Jerry," I think you should. "I'm late for my algebra class."
"I understand," Jerry responded. "But before I let you go, I have something for you."
Tad walked over, holding a wallet-shaped device identical to the one Sean carried with him everywhere.
"It's a W.O.O.H.P wallet phone," he explained, handing it to Clover. "If you happen to have a change of heart, you can use it to contact Jerry or Sean."
"One more thing you should know girls," Sean added. "Don't tell anyone about this place. We're secret agents, with an emphasis on the 'secret' part."
"Or what?" Clover asked, jokingly. "You'll have us eliminated?"
She laughed out loud.
Jerry laughed along with her.
"Of course not," he said. "We stopped doing that in the 90s."
Then his face turned dead serious.
"We'll have you one-way teleported to Siberia."
The girls froze in shock.
"Ta-ta!" Jerry called cheerfully and a trap door opened up beneath the girls. They screamed as they fell through it.
"Uh, Jerry?" Sean said, inquisitively. "Our teleport machine stopped working three months ago. We haven't fixed it yet."
"You and I know that," Jerry said. "But they don't."
Sean groaned. "You know, sometimes I think you like this job a little too much."
He jumped into the still open trap door, sliding down the chute with the girls.
After another long slide into the darkness, the four teenagers landed in the hallway through different openings.
Clover emerged from a snack vending machine. Alex from a drink machine. Sam through a trash can. And a bulletin board opened up like a window, letting Sean fall out.
Unfortunately, a familiar grating voice announced that Jerry's timing could have been better.
"Hello, losers!" Mandy mocked before laughing along with about a dozen other students there.
Sam glared at them, feeling as humiliated as the three teens to her right.
Then a gasp broke through the laughter.
"Samantha!" the harsh tone of Miss Scrich rang out.
Indeed, the principal was now walking up to them.
Sean, Alex, and Clover looked on, nervous.
"What are you doing inside that trashcan?" Scrich demanded.
"Uh..." Sam struggled to find an answer. "N-nothing Miss Scrich. J-just trying to tidy up the hallway."
"As I told you before," the principal scolded. "Your pathetic attempts to score points with me will not get you ahead at Beverly!"
She glared at the four. "Now get to class."
The crowd dispersed; the show was over. And Miss Scrich creeped back to her office.
"Well, that could have gone worse," Sean said, trying to lighten the mood.
But the girls just glared at him.
"What?"
"Uh, hello?" Clover said. "When were you going to mention that you were trying to recruit us into some crazy spy stuff? I mean I can't believe someone so nice turned out to be a such a liar!"
"I didn't lie!" Sean defended. "I didn't say anything about being a spy. I'm sorry for the deception, though."
"Well," Sam interjected. "Whatever you did, I'm in trouble with the principal... for the first time in my life, because of you!"
"Okay, in my defense that wasn't intentional."
"Hmph!" all three girls exclaimed and stormed off to their next classes.
"Girls, come on!" he called out pleadingly. "I know this isn't what you expected. But we can still be friends!"
"As if!" Alex called back. "No way we're falling for that again!"
"Yeah," Clover added. "Next time you'll probably sell a picture of me without my makeup to Mandy!"
"Sam, Alex, Clover, come on!"
But they ignored him.
And he unhappily sulked to his next class.
His first chance at real friends in years... and he completely blew it.
