Nearly a month passes before Lin's Shiki has another violent reaction. Luckily he's alone, Kazuya sent him to buy food, and there is a blessedly small number of people shuffling about in the market. For his Shiki to be so agitated there must be a fairly powerful spirit nearby, but ghosts are rarely present in high-traffic areas, the only logical explanation is that someone got possessed, and even that is pushing it. Cautiously, Lin casts a look around searching for that distinct blue shimmer that usually indicates spiritual activity. When he can't find any, he shifts to take a look at the people:
Female; fifties, clutching an expensive handbag to her chest and sneaking suspicious glances at the young man crouching next to her, she looks like she wants to say unpleasant things to him. Not a threat.
Male; late teens to early twenties, stubbornly ignoring the woman watching him, seems almost petulant in his rifling through microwave dinners. Currently wearing an expensive jacket. Not a threat.
Female; mid-thirties, favoring her left leg, probably because she's got a child clinging to her right, dark circles around her eyes lightly concealed with makeup. Not a threat.
Male; sixties or above, currently trying to convince the female cashier to date his grandson, apparently he's an honest, hardworking boy and is getting an engineering degree at Tokyo University. Not a threat.
The next few people are categorized similarly, nothing about them suggests something else was piloting their bodies. In most cases, the possessed person struggles with motor function because of differences in physiology; muscle memory usually works against whatever action the ghost wants the body to make if they are physically incompatible. Only the stronger ghost can override a person's muscle memory, even to the point of gaining a limp, but a ghost in such a highly-populated area would most likely be too weak to maintain possession longer than ten to twenty minutes.
At least that's what usually happens.
When the chime of the market doors alerts him of two new people walking into the store, Lin felt his Shiki go deathly silent. Never in his life did he think they would abandon him, but the way they just stopped made him wonder.
The young man leading was taller than average with an unruly mane of fiery hair barely contained by his hood. Lin normally wouldn't comment, but whoever dyed the kid's hair must have been a professional. The second one was even taller than the first by at least six inches and probably taller than Lin, and of non-Japanese descent. Dark-haired and thick-lipped, with a hint of a tattoo peeking out from under his sleeve.
He knew he was staring, he couldn't help it, but he was sure one of these two boys was the reason his Shiki panicked so badly. He needed to know which, it was dangerous not to, letting a ghost that powerful free reign in a space like this could end very poorly.
The second Ichigo stepped into the store, he felt eyes on him. Which, to be fair, isn't an uncommon occurrence, but he could tell he wasn't getting his normal brand of attention. There was just something… other about it, like that one time he walked in on a couple of kids telling ghost stories in the abandoned sector of the industrial district at three in the morning. No, he won't admit to why he was there, no he was not looking for trouble, he just felt like taking a walk, so stop asking.
Whoever, whatever, was watching him was simply observing, trying to figure out how to proceed. With that in mind, Ichigo decided to ignore it. He wasn't about to make a scene in the middle of the dried fruits section of the organic produce aisle, he has more class than that. No, he'll wait for whatever it is to approach him and deal with it discreetly.
"Do you want anything while we're here?"
"Eggs" This is why Ichigo likes Chad the best, simple answers to simple questions. Chad's been his best friend since before high school, so small moments like this after all the ridiculousness that was his life, he's thankful for. Ichigo knew better than to think Chad couldn't feel the strange presence, it wasn't like it was hiding, he was unsure it he should involve Chad in the 'dealing with it' later. Maybe.
