ASYLUM PART 2
Alice can say this with confidence that her brain has been thoroughly picked, and now she was pissed. She hated dealing with people like Ellicot because they were used to being lied to and working their way to pull the truth out of people. It was clear in an instant that none of her tricks were working on him so she had no choice but to have that therapy session with him. She hated it, whole-heartedly, and with every fiber of her being.
Dean and Sam looked up at the sound of clicking heels and finally saw Alice emerge from the building after what felt like an hour. Maybe even two since their feet were starting to hurt with how long they were standing out there.
"Alice! You were in there forever." Dean exclaimed but backed off a bit when he saw how contorted and unnerved her face looked. She was mad for whatever reason. "What the hell were you talking about?"
Alice tightened her jaw and leaned against the Impala. She ran her hands through her hair and let out a deep and exhausted sigh. "Nothing..." she muttered softly. "Nothing. Got some information about the hospital though."
Sam cocked a brow and became a bit worried since this attitude was unlike her. "You sure you're alright?"
"Sam," Alice cut in firmly and closed her eyes tightly. "I'm fine, really. I just wanna focus on my job. That's all I wanna do right now."
The boys didn't know how to initially respond to that but they knew better than to think they were going to get answers from her anymore after that. Sam had a feeling what must've happened though, knowing that type of place she was inside. She probably wasn't used to being asked personal questions like that and didn't know how to react to it, thus why she's shutting down.
Sam nudged Dean in his side and gave a motion for him to drop it. Dean groaned but followed his brother's lead. "Alright. So...what do we got?" he asked, getting back on topic.
Alice looked momentarily relieved to be asked a question like that and audibly sighed. "The, uh, south wing. It's where they put the hard cases. The psychotics and criminally insane."
"Sounds cozy." Dean shrugged.
"Yeah, but not after what happened back in '64," Alice said grimly. "They began a riot and attacked the staff, even each other."
"So the patients took over the asylum?" Sam asked, later confirmed from Alice when she nodded her head.
"Looks that way."
"Any deaths?" Dean asked.
"Oh yeah," she gave an exaggerated laugh. "Both patient and staff. Quite a decent number, too. Shit was pretty gory from what I hear. They couldn't even recover some of the bodies, one being our own chief of staff, Ellicott."
The boys looked perplexed
"Whaddaya mean, never recovered?" Dean asked, causing Alice to smirk morbidly.
"Cops tried their best and searched every inch of the place. Some of the patients though...must've stuffed the bodies in their own super-secret hidey-hole.
Sam grimaced. "That's gross... I guess they, uh transferred the remaining patients to another hospital after that, huh?"
She nodded. "Yeah, and they closed down the hospital right after. Hadn't been used since but...guess some of the patients never left, if you know what I mean."
Dean scoffed before lowering his head and smiling. "Yeah, I do. So, to sum it up, we've got a bunch of violent deaths and a bunch of unrecovered bodies."
And a bunch of angry spirits," Sam added.
"Good times. Let's check out the hospital tonight."
Daylight faded away and they used that time to sneak back into the hospital. It wasn't as deadly quiet as it was in the early morning though. There now seemed to be shuffling noises all over the place with moving shadows just at the corner of their eyes, only to slink away when they shined their flashlights over the area.
Alice was about to close the entrance door behind her but stopped suddenly and looked back at it. "Huh?" she said with a perplexed look on her face
Dean turned around. "What's up? You good?" he asked.
Alice remained quiet while trying to dig her way through what she thought were insignificant memories. "It's just...I'm pretty sure I accidentally left the door open when we left this morning...but it was closed when we got here." Her face twisted up into a sneer when a thought crossed her mind. "Oh...please don't tell me stupid kids have been in here again," she groaned after closing the door back up, now making a mental note of it.
Dean shared her frustration and began to walk down the hall. "Hope it ain't." He pulled out his EMF and began scanning as Alice scouted a few feet ahead to make sure they were really alone.
"Getting readings?" Sam asked while looking at things through a video camera, seeing if he could pick up on any orbs.
"Yeah, big time." He nodded when the EMF buzzed nonstop in his ears.
Sam pointed the video camera at Alice and saw numerous white orbs floating around without her even knowing. "This place is orbing like crazy."
"Probably multiple spirits out and about."
"And if these uncovered bodies are causing the haunting..."
"We gotta find 'em and burn 'em. Just be careful though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed-off spirit... is the pissed-off spirit of a psycho killer."
Dean and Alice broke off for a moment to check out some of the other rooms to make sure nothing was inside, leaving Sam to look around the main hallway that had other branching directions.
He pointed his video camera around and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw an old woman through the hazy lens walking towards him. Her hair was thin and white like spider webs and her eyes were mutilated, one bloody and the other hanging out and bearly holding on by a piece of meat.
Sam gasped sharply and stepped away from her. He was going to call for help but didn't have time to get a single word out when a shotgun blast of salt ripped right through the spirit and caused her to disappear instantly. Alice now stood in her place with a shotgun in hand that had smoke coming off the barrel.
"You good?" she asked while popping out the empty casing.
Dean entered the room a second later but was immediately put at ease when he saw they were alright.
Sam looked a little stunned. "That was weird," he said.
Alice slowly nodded her head and scanned the room. "A little slow on the uptake, wasn't she?" She shared his bewilderment. "I was in the doorway of another room and saw her appear. She had plenty of time to attack you...but didn't."
"Right?" Sam agreed. "She didn't hurt me. She didn't even try! So if she didn't wanna hurt me then what did she want?"
Dean was about to protest against the weird theory but all three of them were put on guard when they heard a noise coming from a room they hadn't checked yet. They all shared a silent look between each other and moved in close with Alice taking the lead with a shotgun in hand. Sam shined his light on a metal bed that was laid toppled over in the corner, and as they slowly approach, they began to see the top head of a blonde woman. They yanked the bed away and saw a young girl snap her head around and face them. Her eyes were filled with tears and her skin was deadly pale. She was human though.
Alice groaned and lower her gun. "What did I tell you. Stupid kids..." She waved her hand and stepped back so the boys could move in.
"It's alright, we're not going to hurt you. It's okay," Dean said to ease the girl's worry. "What's your name?
The young girl slowly stood up. "Katherine. Kat."
"Okay. I'm Dean, this is Sam and Alice."
"What are you doing here!?" Sam asked.
"Um. My boyfriend, Gavin," she said meekly.
Alice cocked a brow at the mention of another person and set aside her irritation. "Is he here?"
"Somewhere. He thought it would be fun, try and see some ghosts. I thought it was all just...you know. Pretend. I've seen things. I heard Gavin scream and..." She bit down on her lips and took in a sharp breath.
"Alright. Kat? Come on. Sam's gonna get you out of here and then we're gonna find your boyfriend," Dean said but the plan was immediately rejected by her.
"No! No. I'm not going to leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you," she said assuringly
"It's no joke around here, okay. It's dangerous."
"That's why I gotta find him."
The boys looked between each other, a little indecisive whether to let her tag along or not. They looked at Alice to get her opinion but she just crossed her arms and shook her head, motioning them to not drag her into their final decision.
Dean just shrugged. "Alright, I guess we gonna split up then. Let's go."
They split off into two teams to try and cover more ground to look for Gavin. Dean stayed with Kat while Alice and Sam searched the other side of the south wing, flashing their lights down the hall and consistently calling out to the kid but getting nothing back.
They haven't heard anything in a while and the silence had gotten to the point of being eerie. It's not like the spirits have pulled back though. Alice could still feel these drops of coldness against her back. It felt like a hundred pairs of hollow eyes staring at them from the shadows, never fading or dwindling in intensity.
Sam walked into one of the rooms and came to an abrupt halt when he saw the body of a young teen laying on the ground. "Alice!" he called sharply and rushed to the floor to check the kid out. He woke up quickly though once Sam touched him and nearly freaked out. "Hey, Gavin. It's okay, I'm here to help."
"Who are you?" The kid demanded.
"Sam and Alice. We, uh, found your girlfriend." Sam said and pulled the kid to his feet.
"Kat? Is she alright?"
"She's fine." Alice calmly stepped into the room and used her flashlight to scan over the kid, making sure he wasn't hurt or anything. It was a little worrisome that they found him lying unconscious in the middle of an empty room. "Worried about you though. What happened to you? You okay?"
The kid shuddered and felt his heart throbbing from the adrenaline slowly leaving his body. "I was running. I think I fell."
She cocked a brow, a little amused. "Oh yeah? What were you running from?"
"There was...there was this girl." He took in a quivering breath and struggled to get his words out, still not able to comprehend what he saw back there. "Her face. It was all messed up."
Sam tried to calm the kid down since it was obvious he was still shaken up. "Okay listen, did this girl... did she try and hurt you?" he asked, wanting to test a theory of his.
"What? No, she...uh..."
"She what?"
"She...kissed me."
Alice blinked and started the kid, unsure if she heard him right or if she just happened to blackout for a split moment. "You're screwing with me, right?"
"Does it look like I'm messing around?" The kid snapped, nearly close to tears. "She kissed me. I'm scarred for life!"
Alice's lips quivered and she didn't bother to hold back her laughter. "You...ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, aren't you? Listen. It could've been worse. You could be dead right now and not standing here complaining about something as small as this." She reached over and patted the kid on the shoulder who just looked at her like she was insane.
"Can you remember anything else?" Sam asked.
"She uh...actually, she tried to whisper something in my ear."
"What?" he asked eagerly.
Gavin shrugged. "I don't know. I ran like hell."
Alice ran her hands over her face and groaned when they weren't given the answer they wanted. "Alright. We'll...deal with things later. Let's get back to Dean and Kat already," she said and gestured the boys out of the room.
Dean stood beside Kat and watched over her as they continued to search for Gavin while Alice and Sam went off looking in other places he might be. They called out his name while peeking through some dirty windows that lead into old rooms. They couldn't find anything though so they were hoping Alice and Sam had more luck than they did.
"I got a question for you. You've seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?" Dean brought up since they had nothing better to do. He also wanted to bring this up and say something before Alice could, knowing she probably wouldn't be so nice with her own warning.
"I guess so," Kat said sheepishly.
Dean stopped walking and turned around to face her. "Do us a favor. Next time you see one? Pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted...don't go in!" He turned to continue walking but stopped suddenly when his flashlight started to blink and fade out. "You son of a bitch." He whacked it a couple of times but it was no use. The thing was dead. He groaned and pulled out Alice's lighter that he had yet to give back. "It's alright, I got a lighter."
Kat stiffened when she felt a strong hand grasp her arm. "Ow. You're hurting my arm," she said, glancing behind them and seeing nothing.
Dean arched a brow. "What are you talking about?"
They both turn to look at each other and notice that they were too far apart. Looking down at her arm though, they saw a disembodied arm had grabbed her. She was suddenly yanked hard and screamed while being forcefully dragged into the room beside them, the metal door slamming shut. Dean tried to wrench it open but it didn't even budge as Kat screamed for help on the other side.
"Lemme out! Please!" she yelled against the sharp echoing of her small fist hitting against the reinforced door.
"Kat! Hang on!" Dean used every ounce of his strength to try and get the door open but it was no use. It was like the thing was welded shut despite nothing holding it that way.
Sam, Alice, and Gavin finally came running down the hall after hearing Kat's scream echoing throughout all of south wing.
"What's going on?" Sam said in a single breath after running for so long.
"She's inside with one of them. Alice, can't you get this thing open?" Dean moved aside for her to check out.
Alice got down on her knees and took a look at the door while bringing out a small lockpicking kit she had inside the lining of her jacket. She calmly inserted the instrument into the narrow lock but found this strange, supernatural force behind it that blocked her from pushing it in any further.
"Alice!" Dean urged.
Alice stood up. "Whatever's inside with her is stopping us from getting in," she said while pulling on the handle. Nothing. "I can't get in!"
Kat continued to scream. "Help me!"
"Kat!" Gavin called out desperately.
"Get me outta here!"
Sam moved up close to the door. "Kat, it's not going to hurt you. Listen to me. You've got to face it. You've got to calm down."
Dean turned to him and looked astonished. "She's gotta what?!"
"I have to what?!" Kat called back.
"These spirits, they're not trying to hurt us, they're trying to communicate. You gotta face it. You gotta listen to it."
"You face it!"
"No! It's the only way to get out of there. Look at it, come on. You can do it."
There was this tense silence that followed right after as everyone waited around to see what would happen, hoping Sam's theory was right. Alice was vigilant and kept a firm hand on the door and waited for a chance it would loosen. After maybe a minute of nothing, she finally felt the door's unknown force release. Alice ripped it opened the next second and saw Kat standing on the other side, totally fine and just a little frightened.
"Oh, Kat." Gavin grabbed her and pulled her away from the room while Alice went in and check it out.
"One thirty-seven," Kat said.
Alice stepped out after finding nothing inside. "What did you say?"
"It whispered in my ear. 137."
Sam and Dean paused for a moment before speaking at the same time when realizing. "Room number."
Alice pulled the boys away so they could talk for a moment and bring up a plan for what to do next. "Alright. So at least we know what we're dealing with," she said, feeling a little more confident now that they have a better understanding of the place.
"So the spirits aren't actually trying to hurt anyone..." Sam said.
"Looks that way. Why they're doing this though is another question. My theory...something probably got them spooked. " Alice checked her gun out and quickly reloaded.
Dean cocked a brow. "Scared ghosts...that's a new one."
"Not for me it ain't. Something's lingering around that they don't like...which is why they're trying to communicate." Alice took a breath and stood back up to address the kids. "Alright...so this is the plan. Sam and Dean's gonna get you guys out of here. In the meantime...I'm gonna go check out what the fuss is about in room 137."
"You sure about going on your own?" Sam asked. He knew it wouldn't be trouble for her but he just needed to be extra sure.
"Should be fine now that I know the rest of the spirits ain't out to hurt us." she shrugged and began to head off in the opposite direction. "Give me a call if something comes up!"
"You stay safe out there!" Dean called back to her.
"You guys too!" She gave the boys one last wave before leaving, seemingly melting away into the darkened halls as the clicking of her heels faded away too.
