presea221: I imagine Ryo to be a very cool and collected person in the first season, considerate enough to his family/friends, but a bit clumsy when it comes to relationships in general, and well, there were no other suspects found, they wanted the case solved. True, writing is still communicating, Ryo will also question it this chap. Let's see how it goes for him.

ToBlazePurple: Rie has suffered a lot, but we will see how she develops. Her dynamic with people still needs working, but given the trauma, we will see how she stands and overcome it! Ryo will need some patience, though.

PS.: This chapter is a bit longer than others, I was fixing it those days and it grew a bit compared to the 1st version.

Chapter 3: Speechless

The buzzing of the numerous chit-chats in between the students cease when Chronos claps his hands loudly.

"Signores, Signoras! We have news! Please, enter signora Kinomoto."

From the entrance a figure appears, the pink haired girl, in a full obelisk blue uniform, her eyes have bags under as if she did not sleep the previous night or cried all long, her low gaze stares at the ground and her head is softly bowed down, receiving the stares of all the class as if they are evildoers with smirks.

"She was already a student here and due to some personal issues, she had to take a medical leave from school, but now she will be coming back, so welcome her nicely, parmigiano!" he smiles and finishes his exquisite pose "You can go to your assigned seat."

She nods once and walks up towards her place, receiving all sorts of glances and listening to some small chattering and gossiping. Among the people that look at her, Ryo. his eyes follow her silhouette as she goes up, past beyond him, without noticing the amount of attention he gives until he listens to some comments, with a flinch:

"Heh, even that Kaiser was looking at her so intently. I thought he didn't care about girls."

"No joke man, did you see how pretty she is?"

"She doesn't shine like Asuka-san, this girl is just depressing."

His gaze goes back to the front, to the lecture that starts. The hours pass slowly, but finally the classes come to an end, as usual, most of the students leave as soon as possible when the bell rings.

He looks over his shoulder to the seats behind him, Rie is still there, her gaze looks distant, away from that room, drowned in her own thoughts. She probably didn't even notice time passed by and it is time to go, or perhaps, she could be reminiscing about the times she was there with her colleagues.

While he is preparing to go out, he can't help but overhear more comments from the girls on the other side of his seat, they seem jealous.

"Ugh, her face is so ugly. She looks like she didn't sleep at all during the night, like a zombie."

"Keh, zombie girl is quite the nice nickname, she came back from the dorm where everyone disappears after all."

"Did you see how Kaiser was following her with eyes? Our Kaiser giving attention to the strange girl is unacceptable!"

"That is true, he never even bat an eye for anyone that is not Asuka, how could he pay attention to this creepy girl?"

Rie's eyes flicker for a moment, noticing the disapproval glances of her classmates, she hurriedly catches her things and goes down the stairs, getting out of the classroom.

"Heh, she better get out of here. A girl with such a weak personality cannot live up to the obelisk blue name!"

"Yeah, I hope she gets demoted soon, to the place she should be."

Ryo slaps the table with both hands using the impulse to get up, the thud startles the girls. He glares at them with a deadly stern expression, displaying his disapproval, then he goes away without saying a word.

"Oh my, did the Kaiser just..."

"Kyaah, such a cold and strict stare! He is so handsome!"

"Kyaah! He is hot even when he is looking serious like that!"

The fawning only riles him up more, and he leaves that classroom annoyed. How could some students be so awful? Were they there to duel or to make a hobby out of bullying others? His calm demeanor comes back once he is out.

There is no trace of that girl, where did she run to? She couldn't have gone far, but is it the best to go directly and talk to her after that disturbing night? Maybe triggering her memories is reckless and will only bring problems.

"I can't just sit idly..." He thinks to himself until a voice interrupts his trail of thoughts.

"You seem troubled."

"Asuka."

"Is there a problem that would make you so distressed, Ryo?" she giggles joking to lighten the mood.

"My talent is dueling, not..."

He stops in the middle of the sentence after catching a glimpse of that girl walking to the left at the next intersection, behind the blonde. Asuka looks at her back, after perceiving his unusual behavior.

"What? Is there someone behind me?"

Taken by surprise, he simply dismisses the talk, quickly walking towards that direction.

"I will talk to you later, I have something to do now."

The blonde girl squints her eyes in doubt. It is very strange for him to act like this, what is going on? Her curiosity doesn't allow her to leave it be, she swiftly and discreetly tags behind him.

Ryo arrives at the corridor, scanning the surroundings as fast as he can, but she is not there, he continues onwards, and after looking both directions, he spots her on the right side, she is walking to the outside of the student building.

He raises his arm lightly and opens his mouth to speak, but his actions freeze when he feels a presence behind, reacting immediately and looking back. On the wall of the intersection, Asuka hides, a drop of sweat rolling down her face.

"He is so sharp, but..." with a hand covering her mouth, she smiles gently and delighted "So it was a girl… Who would've thought that what is troubling him was this… This is interesting."

After shaking off the sensation he was being watched, he turns back to searching for the girl, but she is not there anymore, sighing profusely, he rushes again. This game of cat and mouse continues until he finally leaves the building.

In the open space, near the statues in front of the main construction he sees her walking alone, not towards the dorms, but towards the coast.

"Don't tell me..."

Gasping at the thought he follows even more intensely, running until he is near enough to call out for her:

"Hey! Wait, please!"

She stops on her tracks and slowly turns around, her eyes still seem vacant and her mind adrift, he halts his steps too, a few meters from her, at a loss of how to start the conversation. Why did he not think about what to say before?

"You are Rie Kinomoto, right?" a drop of sweat rolls down his face, is this the best he can do, really?

Her bubble bursts in an instant, her eyes gain life as if she is back to herself, flabbergasted with his sight. It takes a few seconds, but after staring at him, the images of him of that night and now overlap, him without that coat, his expression while half-scolding her and the fact he could not afford himself to face her after all, she finally gets a hold of the situation.

Her expression is frightened, not only that, she is bright red from top to bottom, her whole face looks like it's burning, she hurriedly covers her face, surprising him a bit, that surprise is overwhelmed by concern when he sees her shaking arms. He turns around, his brows curling upwards in a bitter and pitiful way.

"Given the state she was in back then, she probably doesn't want to see my face right now…" he thinks quietly and voices himself after:

"You don't need to look at my face if you hate the idea that much. But could you at least listen to me?"

Her memories of that day come back vividly, she starts sweating aplenty, her heart races again, as if she was there. He takes her silence as a denial, but peeks over his shoulders just to see her eyes fixed on the ground, she looks scared.

"I suppose this was not the right time to confront her directly, she doesn't seem well..." he rebukes himself mentally. "Was it a mistake to even try?"

"I am sorry, maybe I should ask you another time."

She gasps, finally looking at him again, or more precisely at his back, confused. He doesn't allow himself a single glance while he feels her gaze is still on him.

A small twing crackles under her feet, he can listen to her footsteps drawing closer, much to his surprise, reflexively he turns around, however that only aggravates her frightened temper, she immediately walks some steps behind. Is it his expression? Maybe his eyes are too serious or intense and that can be misinterpreted?

"I am Ryo Marufuji, I am not sure how long you have been out of the academy, but you must have heard about me. We were classmates in our first year too." he turns his gaze sideways at the distance, if that helps her feel more comfortable.

She nervously keeps switching her gaze from place to place around, it is clear she is restless with both the situation and him. Should he just give up and try another day? His fists clench.

From nearby, a group of boys hide behind the statues, they look at each other, sweating anxiously. The four boys that were using drugs in the forbidden dorm that night.

"You don't think she remembers us do you…?"

"Why is she with Kaiser now? Why is he talking to her?" one of them nibbles the nails.

"Tsk. We weren't called yet, so I assume they don't know about us, she probably is retarded and can't recognize us anyways..."

"For now we should be fine. But what if they find out we were there?!"

"I heard Kaiser found her first, maybe we could pretend it was all him!"

"Impossible, he was called but nothing happened, they know it is not him! Takuma, what if they find out you fucked that girl?"

"Can you really call it that? I didn't even come."

"You all, calm down. We can get her while she is alone if it comes to the worst… Let's observe for now."

"Don't even say those words! We will find out whether it will be necessary or not. She might not remember now, but if she does, one day… We will make sure she won't be able to say anything..." Takuma bites his own lips in frustration.

From afar, Kaiser feels as if he is being watched again, his orbs flash to the direction the boys are, they hide even more, sweating afraid of his intuition.

"This is the second time today… Am I becoming paranoid?" he shakes off his head and turns to the girl, she jolts in reaction, her feet slide backwards.

What should he say in such an awkward moment? She can't speak, and even if she could, is it right of him to demand answers? He shouldn't be relying on this girl too much, especially in this delicate moment she is in.

"That is not the direction of the girl's dorm..."

The comment makes her avert her gaze and look down to the ground. He closes his eyes with a deep sigh. Was she really intending to go there again after all the trouble he has been under to help? Does she really feel so worthless she can't continue her life? Not that he would be able to understand fully how she feels, but still…

"I would like to say I won't stop you, but I need your help with something. No one else can help me with that. Regardless, I shouldn't depend on you for that."

Her roundy blue eyes flinch with the declaration, oscillating in caution. The great Kaiser needed her help? But with what? He didn't sound as menacing as his cold expression indicates. Besides, did he just say he shouldn't rely on her for that after asking for her help? He is so puzzling.

"I need to know the truth of what you really saw at the dorms and what happened that made you scared that you can't speak about it. If you understand, then, I will come to talk to you again another day, when you feel better. Until then, you should get some rest, I will figure things out myself."

Just the word dorms sent a shiver down her spine, he turned around and started walking away, her frightened expression attenuated watching him go. Her brows furrow up in sadness, she feels useless, she can't help feeling so afraid neither speak or tell anyone, she can't even remember the faces of ones who tried to hurt her or at least thank someone that saved her life back then.

Those emotions swell up in her chest and tears form on her eyes. She can't hold them back, covering her face. Why all she can do is cry? It has been like that for the whole past week. How much more will that last?

Ryo goes back to the school building to attend some duels scheduled on his practice with teachers. His mind is elsewhere, walking automatically.

"Is the reason she can't stand and look into my face because of what happened? Or is it because I am a man…? Does that mean it would be better if I didn't speak to her? If I was a girl, maybe she would be able to comfortably talk to me..."

A heavy atmosphere hovers around him, he is interrupted by someone standing in front of him. Asuka once more.

"Did a girl confess to you again?"

"Confess... what do you…?" his brain can't process what she is talking about.

"I am just teasing you, I saw you talking to that girl. She just came back from a long absence, right?" she chuckles "Of all the things that could be troubling you, I must say a girl is the least of what I would expect."

"You are misunderstanding it." he flinches slightly abashed "It's not what you are thinking..."

She is amused, but soon a faint smile covered in disappointment sprouts on her lips, that is not what she wanted to hear.

"You are so boring. Why would you be talking to that girl, then?"

"That is..." he closes his mouth shut with an uncanny expression, the blonde feels the awareness it might not be as simple as she thought.

"Is it related to the reason you were called over a week ago…?"

He averts his gaze towards the sky with a ponderative semblance, an idea crosses his mind and he looks at Tenjouin as if she was the answer for his problems, she flinches under his serious gaze.

"W-what? Did I say something strange?"

"You have girlfriends, right?"

"Yes, I do. But why do you ask that?"

"How do your words reach someone that is scared to tell you anything?"

She feels the pressure upon seeing his inexpressive gaze with some sort of expectation. He has been acting so out of himself lately, or rather unique, even so his tone seemed somehow serious. She clears her throat and answers earnestly:

"If they don't say anything, doesn't that just mean they are not ready to talk? In this case, you just need to wait and make sure they know you are here and that they can trust you."

"I see…"

"As I thought, I had bad timing. It is too late to regret it now, I should perhaps go and check that dorm myself." His orbs distance from the surroundings with the prospect in his mind.

"Ryo, is there any problem?"Asuka's brows curl up.

"No, it's nothing, forget it, I have some matters to attend to, thank you for your insight, as usual."

He taps her shoulder and leaves, behind him the girl watches as he enters the academy. Her eyes daze off to the horizon in sorrow, a ponderative air hanging above.

"Ryo, do you have more clues of what happened to my brother? No, you would tell me if you did, right? But then who is that girl? Did something bad happen between you two?"

Not long after, on that same cliff near the lighthouse there were some investigative tapes blocking the way and a barricade. She trespasses the barricade and walks nearby the edge again, looking down to the sea under.

Her head feels dizzy, she tumbles a step back, reviving the scenes there in her memory, when she jumped, how everything went dark as she drowned to the moment she recovered her consciousness to see the face of an angry Ryo Marufuji.

His shocked expression is still in her mind, how absolutely terrified he was as if he'd witnessed a murder. His words also are carved into her mind. He says he needs her help and it is something only she can provide, the truth about the forbidden dorms, yet he lets her easily go off the hook and berates himself for relying on her.

Her heart wavers just thinking about it, all that happened in that accursed place, all the suffering it brought her, not only once, but twice. Then, the moment she tries to end her life, someone happens to be there and stops her, she is once more stuck on that island. Forever regretting, unable to get free from those shackles. She hates it.

Her tears fall again, she can't come to jump again when she remembers his expression. Is there really something she can help with? Even if she tells the story to him, will he really believe it? Can he imagine what kind of dark secrets the forbidden dorm holds? Perhaps, he too is throwing himself down a cliff without ever realizing it.

She can't mourn forever, if there is a slight chance, it is time to try, it is what she tells herself, wiping her tears with her whole arm, trying to be strong. If there is a path to the end of that obscure and endless night, she will take it, but she doesn't want anyone else to get hurt.

She certainly can't tell him the truth, because she knows better than anyone it will put him in danger, she must convey it to him somehow, that he shouldn't meddle with the shadows of that place.

He saved her life, even if this was not how she planned it, even if she hated and despised him for this whole past week for thoughtlessly saving her life when she wanted to die, she can't just let him go to his death and become yet another student that disappears.

Rie walks away from that cliff, it is time to change, if she can end her life, then the next time she will gladly do it while trying to seal away the darkness of those dorms with her. Without regrets.

During the next day…

Ryo walks on the corridors of the duel academy, people's glances are cast at him, they comment about his feats and invent their baseless rumors. The Kaiser, someone cold yet royal and powerful, that is his nickname. It doesn't bother him, he doesn't care about random bypasser's attention, however, is it exactly because of this unnecessary attention that other sorts of rumors started running around…

"You hear Kaiser rejected a girl?"

"Ah, you mean that retarded girl that was absent for a long time? Wait, did she have a crush on him or what?"

"Who knows, she was crying somewhere after they talked, it seems. I heard from some friends, they saw it."

"Well, that is what she gets for trying to steal Kaiser's heart after she just came back."

"Pfft. That guy is like an ice block, no one will ever reach through him, does he even know how to smile?"

"I heard he has a brother."

"Well, sure we don't hear a thing about his brother, does he even care about family at all?"

"He is truly the Kaiser."

Scoffing at such idiocy, he pays no heed to their words, nonetheless it does pick his interest how rumors about him and Rie Kinomoto started, no one else should have been around when they talked, so how did someone see it…? Maybe they just invented it based on other rumors of when they were both called for the inquiry.

He breathes the fresh air outside, the weather is clear, he is about to walk back to the dorms, there are many students doing the same, he hears some upset voice from the side.

"I heard you tried to lay your hands on Kaiser-sama, huh!"

He hears a push and as if someone collided with the wall. A frown wrinkles his forehead, the voices come from the side of the wall, on the side of the main road outside the building.

"You must be so full of yourself! You can't even talk to anyone, but dares to go and approach Kaiser-sama!"

"Give up, girl, he is out of your league!"

"She doesn't seem to know her place, I even listened to some people saying she used her body to seduce our Kaiser! Outrageous!"

"What, did the cat eat your tongue? Say something!"

He hears a slap on the wall. His feet move on their own, he has a hunch of who it could be, even though internally he wishes he is wrong. Slowly he puts a hand to the corner of the wall and suddenly shows himself.

The scene, as he expected, the three girls of his classroom that had been spreading mean rumors about Rie before, one of them has an arm stretched, touching the wall on the side of Rie. The other two are behind the ringleader with scornful expressions and crossed arms, demanding an explanation.

The pink haired girl has the face turned to his side, her empty eyes are unfocused, looking down and he can see the swell marks as if she cried not long ago.

"What are you all doing?"

His tone was grave and his expression stern, the girls panicked, jolting back, Rie's eyes flinched with the sight of him. Of all times, for him to be here right now…

"Ka-Kaiser-sama, we were just talking to her..." the ringleader puts up a nervous smile, but it is obvious how much she is forcing her lips.

"That's right, we were just having some girl's talk!"

One of the other girls puts a hand on Rie's shoulder, the situation just worsens. Her eyes become blank again, pure terror filling her expression just by feeling that cold sweaty hand on her shoulder, instantly she reacts, slapping away with all her might the hand of the girl, out of her mind.

"Ouch! Are you crazy you-"

She darts away, running, Ryo barely has time to avoid the collision, her shoulder brushing onto his chest and bumping him out of the way. She rushes to the horizon, disappearing quickly, he is as stunned as the other three girls.

"What is wrong with her?"

"She even bumped into Kaiser-sama, how could she?!"

His glare flashes towards them, they get startled with the sight. Is he angry at them? His tone is collected, but callous as he speaks:

"If you have scores to settle, do it with a duel, don't go chasing people out of your petty frustration, this is just loathsome."

Saying that, he turns around and leaves, the leader of the girls blushes and falls to the ground, with a deep sigh.

"Did he just call me loathsome? I thought he rejected that girl! Why is he defending her?"

"Don't worry sis, he is just like that! I am sure he doesn't care!"

"Aww, that cold glare, that is our Kaiser!"

They fawn over him once more. Those girls never learn their lesson. He looks around to find the runaway, but she is nowhere to be seen. Where did she run off to? She is more athletic than he expected for someone that had been out of school for months.

"She doesn't seem like she can talk that soon. It all started after she went to the abandoned dorms according to that therapeut… Whatever she saw or lived there, it was so awful she stopped speaking. However, the part I don't understand is: that night she certainly had to cross the woods to come to the cliff if she had been to the abandoned dorms… If she was afraid of the dorms and the woods, then why would she be there again after having a traumatic experience? She may not use words, still she is doing that therapy, so she is communicating with her therapist somehow, but how…?"

His frown increases as he tries to figure out the mystery behind her actions. He did say he should not rely on her, but at the same time, he felt bothered he was missing that piece of information and had the idea the motives she had are intimately related to the disappearance of the students, namely her friends too.

"Could it be that she was trying to investigate what happened but ended up in trouble… Or did she try to revisit the place of her painful memories to overcome it…? Either way, this is just making me more tempted to go there myself."

Meanwhile, Rie sits on the roots of a tree, her hands clutching her hair on the top of her head, shaking as she remembers the night of that day. A voice irrupts her fear:

"I told you."

Her blurry vision looks ahead, there is a girl in an obelisk uniform, arms crossed and a devilish smirk, she can't see her full face, but she recognizes that person.

"Why are you looking at me like this? I felt lonely. You probably do too, don't you? Don't you feel lonely when you think about us? You were the only one that ran away, you left us there, you should've stayed with us, now you are all alone. You should become one with us in darkness."

She closes her eyes strongly and shakes her head off the best she can, but that voice whispers on her ears, inside her mind, relentlessly:

"Don't worry, there is a place here for you too. We will all welcome you, so why don't you come and see us? We miss you so much, Rie… We can be together."

The voice vanishes into thin air and she is left with the silence, hugging her knees and crying in that place. The image of Ryo Marufuji surfaces on her thoughts, panic spreading violently on her veins with her blood boiling. The cold-looking Kaiser, he might be the next to disappear if she doesn't do anything. What can she do to prevent it?

At the same time

The blue-haired duelist waltz through the academy with a deep frown, this time he heads to the psychologist's office, knocking once and barely waiting for a confirmation to enter, he barges into the office without an appointment.

"Marufuji-kun?" he adjusts the glasses, almost dropping the papers on his hand, startled again with the sudden visit "Did you decide you need to talk?"

"It's not about me."

"Oh..." he puts the documents aside "Did something happen…?"

"Rie Kinomoto, she can't speak."

"Well, currently, yes."

"How do you communicate with her, then?"

The sound of his voice was so bothered by the question that the psychologist chuckled a bit with his way of expressing himself when worried.

"Well, if you want to know, how about you sit and we have a talk?"

He pulls the seat and obeys the suggestion, staring inexpressibly at the man in front, causing a drop of sweat to form on the face of the adult, he could be such a frosty kid, only coming when he wants to squeeze some information out.

"She is not incapable of communicating normally with devices, notes, signal language or even drawings, the matter is more rooted on the fact that, due to bad experiences, some people tend to isolate themselves as a defense mechanism and lose some of their senses: vision, speaking skills… Depends on the person and trauma. So even if you try to talk to her with messages or notes, it is very likely she will refuse the idea, don't feel too bothered by it, her rejection does not mean you are doing things wrong."

"Rejection…?" he blinks once wondering why the man talked about the concept.

"I assume you tried speaking to her? If you want to try, go ahead, but you must be careful with how you approach her, currently a direct approach might not be great, furthermore, I suggest to let her have space, and I mean physical distance. She might react aggressively if you approach too much. You found her, so you might understand why she feels so uncomfortable with proximity. Besides, she might hallucinate about things, so if she acts strange, disregard her behavior. The medicines she is taking have side effects, so she might be out of herself for a while."

A gleam of understanding crosses his mind, so the reason she slapped away that girl's hand is because of this…? He can't answer that besides giving off a ponderative vibe.

"Why did you let her return to normal activities if she is not fully recovered yet?"

"She insisted. I believe she needs some time to get used again to her daily life, but she will recover. Marufuji-kun, if you stay in a dark room for too long, your eyes will become unused to the light."

The last phrase echoes in his mind as he lowers his gaze, trying to understand a bit more what is passing through her head.

"Even if she can't communicate with you, it doesn't mean she hates you. But the sight of your face might reanimate her memories, and that is one of the things she doesn't want right now. She feels responsible for her friend's disappearances, guilty even. It is hard for her to interact with all people, not only with you. Perhaps the best you can do is give her time to digest it over."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you are clearly worried and seem to not be able to relieve your mind of this." he smiles faintly, but his expression changed to seriousness. "Just this once. I know your profile so I trust you won't spread any rumors and you will pretend as if we didn't talk today. Right?" He almost winked to get his consentment.

"Thank you." He lowers his head "There is also something else I'd like to ask… That day at the coast, is it true that Kinomoto was…"

"Abused?" His expression dims, he sighs deeply "Well, indeed there was evidence she was forced into an intimate relation with someone, yet the tests about the identity of the culprit weren't conclusive. I heard they thought you did it, but seeing how worried you are, and from what I read on your profile, I don't believe so."

His fists clench, so she was indeed… He takes a look at the psychologist, this time, his coldness just crumbles turning into concern.

"The investigations are ongoing, I can't tell you more, if you really want to know, you should ask the guards. I doubt they will tell you anything, though. This is really not a matter for a student to be concerned over."

"I… It doesn't matter. Thank you for your help."

He waves his hand, taking the hint and getting up, leaving the place without complaints. So there are many ways to convey things without words, he should've thought about it before.

Then, an idea comes to his mind, since boldly asking her questions out of nowhere may have made her reluctant and scared, perhaps he can try a slower approach, especially after what he has heard. Who knows, maybe he can even find out who harmed her and put them in face of justice, expelling people like that would be a very fulfilling feat to accomplish.

He sighs, why is he even trying to be so nosy in her business? All he wants to find out is what happened, nothing more, nothing less. His impatience grows, so maybe he should be going there in person and having a night expedition at the forbidden dorms.

Not long after he leaves the office, Rie enters for her session, sitting down with a gloomy, weary expression. The psychologist takes a deep, analytical look at her. Rummaging through his drawers, he takes a bottle of pills.

The bottle is enveloped in a black, sinister aura, but when he puts it on the table, it looks as if they're normal again. He pushes the bottle towards the girl, a cheerful smile on his face, light reflecting on his lenses, she can't see his eyes under it.

"Here, take this, those are your pills, you were running out of them, weren't you? Make sure to take them regularly like I prescribed."

She nods vaguely, her eyes still distant and takes it automatically, never questioning him. A shrewd grin comes to his lips, for such a short moment she can't notice it, his expression is clean and smiling gently again as he starts:

"Shall we initiate our session now?"

Unaware she is a puppet in the hands of a devil. She lifts her eyes, hoping that the long, long nightmare will come to an end.

Rie's case will be more explained in later chapters, we will also see more about this psychologist. I hope you find it intriguing.
