John and Virgil froze in the doorway.
Virgil felt his mouth drop as his heart threatened to explode from his chest. John's fist bumped his shoulder as he brushed past, collapsing in the chair and taking Scott's free hand gently. It was tightly bandaged and John was extra careful.
It snapped Virgil out of his thoughts and he moved forward, snatching up the notes and skimming through them. His heart plummeted faster than it had risen. This was not good. Virgil glanced up and caught John's eye and grimaced. His brother gave him a wan smile.
Scott may not be dead, but he wasn't out of the woods yet.
'Tell me.'
Virgil looked back down at the paperwork.
'Looks like Scott has more broken bones than whole. Some damage to every major organ, spleen has been removed as has some of his intestine. He coded briefly in surgery but prognosis is good, although he's going to be grounded for a very long time. Thankfully his spine is ok and his skull only has a small fracture. The next 24-48 hours are going to tell us how this will go.'
John expelled a noisy breath. It could have been so much worse. For over an hour it was so much worse. John stood up and gestured for Virgil to sit.
'Stay here with Scott, I'll go get everyone else.'
Virgil hummed his agreement, already lost in the medicalese, making plans for getting Scott home as quickly as possible and everything that would be needed for his rehab.
John smiled to himself as he paused at the doorway to take one last look at his brothers. He made his way back to the room where the rest of his family were waiting. As he moved he spoke quietly to EOS.
'You know the drill, EOS. Security, feeds and medical machinery.'
'Yes, John. Already done. Grandma and Kayo are halfway here. Lady Penelope and Parker are not too far behind.'
'Thanks, EOS. Patch me through to both of them please.'
'FAB, John.'
'And EOS?'
'Yes, John?'
'Thank you. Thank you so much.'
'You are welcome. Patching you through.'
'John?'
'Grandma!'
'Is it true? We heard…'
'No, no it's not true.'
'Oh thank god!'
There was a collective sigh over the comms. As ever Grandma took control.
'What happened?'
'Mix up at point of entry. It was the rescuee that died. EOS found Scott in the patient's room.'
'And the reporter?'
'Ms Kavanaugh overheard the doctor giving us the news. We didn't know she was there.'
'Hmm. Well, there will be time enough to deal with her later. Where are you heading?'
'I'm just heading back to let Gordon and Alan know the good news.'
'What good news?'
John had entered the room. As his brothers stared at him and, the holos of Grandma, Kayo and Penny, John couldn't help but break out into a huge grin. Gordon just looked confused but Alan, red-rimmed eyes and tear-streaked face, latched on to that grin.
'What? What is it?'
John held his arms open in a rare show of affection that was most definitely needed and both younger brothers didn't hesitate to embrace him. John pulled them in close.
'Er…John, you're starting to worry me.'
'Gords, what's your squid sense saying?'
'Um…Huh. Nothing. It's all quiet.'
'That's because nothing's wrong, Gordon. Nothing's wrong.'
'What do you mean, John?'
'I mean, Alan, that we've found Scott and he is most definitely alive.'
Both Gordon and Alan leaned back to check John's face, and John's smile ran into a wide grin at their faces. His grin was infectious.
'Come on. I'll show you.'
Still with an arm over each brother, John led them through the hospital to the small room Scott was in. By the time they had arrived Virgil was in deep discussion with the doctor, who was ashen and looked like he was about to pass out. John wanted to feel angry about the situation, but he was just too happy that the man had been wrong.
They stood to one side as the doctor took his leave of Virgil with a stricken look to them all, and Gordon detached himself from John to latch onto the medic as John and Alan made their way over to the other side of the bed.
'They're going to see about moving him to the private ward as soon as he is stable, probably once the 24-hour period is over.'
John's comms buzzed and he released Alan, murmuring into it as he moved out of the room. Gordon started to follow, but Virgil's arms tightened and stopped him. It surprised him until John came back with their Grandma.
Sally wasted no time, bustling up to Alan and pulling him close as Virgil immediately began filling them all in. She sighed. This one was going to be a long and stressful haul for all of them.
John and Kayo had disappeared, gone to sort security and set up the tech in the new room that John would use to watch Scott until he was ready to leave.
After a while Gordon stirred, grabbing one of the tablets John had left for Virgil and imputing the name of the man on Scott's records in an attempt to block out the sight and sounds of the machinery helping his eldest brother breathe and more.
He only looked up briefly when the door opened and both his missing siblings slipped in. John immediately took up a stance beside Virgil and the two began murmuring, Grandma yielding her seat to Kayo and joining them.
Despite everything, despite the noises the machines made, the quiet murmuring and the fact that all his family were here had a soothing effect on Gordon and he began to relax.
A knock on the door heralded Penny and Parker and they were all there.
Grandma looked around and smiled in satisfaction. Her family was once again whole.
It was time to set the record straight.
