During my break I go talk with the red girl, who has patiently waited around. Though she did order a couple more cookies.
"So…about those dreams."
"You're having them too, right? I knew it. Fighting those black monsters with a huge scythe and kicking butt."
She punctuates her sentence by punching the air.
"And sometimes you're in there too."
"Yes, that seems similar. How long have you been having these dreams?"
"Since about a year ago, I think. It started on my birthday and it's already october again, so almost a full year."
"Is your birthday on the 31st?"
"How did you know?"
"Because I first had these dreams last halloween."
"Yup. My birthday is on halloween. That just means I can dress up like a witch and nobody thinks it's weird."
"So, um…"
"Ruby."
"Thank you."
Calling her 'red girl' would be embarrassing. Especially since she's wearing blue.
"My name is Weiss. And in my dreams I often see you around, as well as two other people. Occasionally I see someone else but most of the time, it's the same four."
"The girl with blonde hair and the one with cat ears."
"Exactly. I was very surprised to see you coming to my defense, thank you for that by the way. The dreams were very vague and only last night I could get a good look on your face. So when I saw you here it was a big shock."
"I've been coming here all the time."
"Really?"
"You have white hair and blue eyes and you're about my height. So I thought it could be you. But I wasn't sure until you hurt your eye, since your dream self has a scar."
I touch my eye, ice cold can of soda pressed on it. Is it really going to scar?
"You didn't recognize my face? Ah, you probably didn't see it in the dreams."
She gets visibly uncomfortable. Did I say anything wrong?
"Actually…I'm not very good at remembering people's faces. A-Anyway, you looked so cool in the dream. You were dancing around, poking things with your sword…you looked like a princess."
Forceful and obvious as the change in subject was, I'll take the compliment.
"I wish. I wouldn't mind finding out I was royalty and getting some large inheritance."
"I mean, you kinda have that air about you. I think it's the white hair."
"That's just albinism. Nothing special. I go out of my way to not wear white because I look ridiculous. Though that dress in the dream looked nice…and expensive."
"You even had a crown on your head. Totally a princess."
"I did? I didn't notice it. Though you looked nice yourself. Does the gothic lolita look appeal to you?"
She averts her eyes.
"There's no way I would look good in those."
How pathetic.
"I admit the corset and the cape aren't for everyone, but you seem to pull it off."
"Haha, that's just impossible. I'm more interested in that scythe. It was big and it turned into a gun and it pushed me around almost like I was flying."
"I did look fun."
"Yeah! And the first dream I had was the best! I was fighting all these werewolf things and going super fast and slicing them to pieces. And then-And then I hooked my scythe behind one's head and pulled the trigger like BLAM! And it cleaved right through his neck and then his body vanished and it was SO COOL!"
I smile. She's just like a kid. Actually…
"How old are you?"
"Fifteen. Well, actually fourteen. I'll be fifteen by the end of the month."
"Right, halloween."
"What about you, Weiss?"
"Seventeen."
"Really? I thought you were around my age since we're the same height and stuff."
Ugh.
"You could be a little more tactful. I'm sensitive about my height, you know?"
"Sorry."
"Now we should…no, my break is over. That's annoying, we haven't talked about the most important thing."
"I could wait until your shift is over."
That will take hours. Not to mention I'll be dead tired.
"I have a better idea. We can meet another day. I'll be free this Saturday."
"Great! Let's add each other."
"My phone is in the office. Just tell me your contact and I'll remember."
"Really?"
"I have a good memory."
"Cool. I forget stuff all the time."
She smiles. Why is she smiling when saying that? It doesn't make sense.
"It will be fun to talk with you again. See you saturday?"
"Of course we will. Why are you saying it like a question?"
"Nothing. See you then, hope your scar heals up nice."
The red girl, no, Ruby leaves.
"Idiot. You don't know that it's going to scar yet."
Though I have a feeling it probably will.
"Weiss, your break is over. I don't pay you to talk to customers!"
"Ugh, back to being a slave. I'M COMING ALREADY!"
