"Why did you do it?" asked Hisoka, trembling, after their first case. Why risk yourself and your safety to help me – You don't even know me at all, he had thought, furious, scared and confused.

Tsuzuki had smiled at him, a confident smile brimming with kindness. "Because you're my partner." Hisoka didn't understand it.

Years later, Tsuzuki had done it again, as he had so many times before. He had risked himself, and this time he had been badly wounded. Hisoka had been targeted, had been the one they had been aiming for, but Tsuzuki had stood in their way. He had been hit in the chest, and he'd been out of it for several hours. No one was sure that he would actually make it this time.

Hisoka had been hurt, but somehow, it didn't matter. Hisoka stayed by Tsuzuki's side, by Tsuzuki's bed the whole time, even though he'd been told to rest himself, recover his strength. Instead, he was sitting in an armchair beside Tsuzuki, gripping his hand tightly, as tightly as he could.

Tsuzuki had almost died this time, and it brought back bad memories and tears and shoulders that shook with quiet trembles.

He fell asleep, finally, his head resting on his arms upon the bed, but woke up soon again when Tsuzuki stirred beside him.

"'Soka...'Soka?" Tsuzuki rasped, his mouth dry, hoarse. But he was awake, opening his eyes again, slowly looking at Hisoka.

Hisoka wiped at his cheeks with the back of his hand.

"I'm here... I'm here," he said, hurrying to stroke Tsuzuki's hair from his eyes.

"I..." Tsuzuki stammered. "You're all right? Aren't you?" He sounded weak, but he was awake. He was okay. Would be okay.

"I'm fine," Hisoka felt that feeling again, that he had always, somehow felt around Tsuzuki. Felt how all worries melted away, ran off of him, while that feeling of security creeped up, wadding them both. Again, as every time before when Tsuzuki did something stupid, like risking himself for him, as the worry melts away it also turns to anger. Boiling, furious anger.

"Why, Tsuzuki?" He demanded. "Why did you do it – you shouldn't – I – you – Why?" He collapsed against the bed, his face pressed against one of Tsuzuki's warm hands.

Tsuzuki managed a smile. "Because I love you."
