Natsu had been trailing Lucy for a minute now. He felt like a creepy stalker. What was he supposed to say? "Hey I saw you crying what's wrong?"
That would be weird. And again, creepy.
His fingers fidgeted with his backpack straps as he thought up what he should say. Nothing he said would sound normal. No matter how he put it, he would have to admit he'd watched her cry.
But now her face was dry, her cheeks weren't red and flushed, and her posture was fixed.
Maybe Natsu should just forget the whole thing. Maybe he was crazy and just imagined it.
He wanted to speak, say something, but every time he opened his mouth the words would get caught in his throat.
They rounded the corner, and he knew exactly where she was heading.
The exit.
Now or never, Natsu opened his mouth, still unsure of what to say, but this time he forced something to come out.
"Hey!" He called out to her.
"Huh?" Lucy stopped, turning around in response.
She recognized the boy. She passed him on the escalator on her way to one of her classes. The only reason she'd remembered was because of his hair. She'd never seen anything like it.
"Oh— I uh…" Natsu stuttered.
What now?
"Um, I just wanted to ask you…" his eyes darted around, hoping to ask a different question.
They landed on her bright shoes, a pretty lilac that matched her top.
"W-Where'd you get those shoes? They look neat!" He exclaimed, somehow feeling a slight bead of sweat roll off his face.
"Oh," she turned her head down at her shoes, then looked back up at him with a bright smile. "My parents got me these for my birthday! I'm not sure where they got them, but they're Adidas, my favorite brand." She answered with a laugh.
She stopped laughing and her smile fell for a second, before she spoke again.
"Sorry, I have a problem with over-sharing," she rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment.
Over-sharing? She just answered his question.
"Don't be!" Natsu flashed a grin. "They picked out a great color!"
"They sure did," she giggled, leaning on her heals and wiggling the shoes back and forth.
Natsu stared at her in awe, forgetting for a second what he'd gone after her to ask. She said something before he could bring it up.
"Speaking of my parents, I've gotta get home. It was nice meeting you, uh…"
He stared at her.
"Oh! N-Natsu!" Now he was embarrassed.
She just smiled at him.
"Nice meeting you Natsu. I'm Lucy."
And with that, she spun around and left. He could call her by her name now that she'd told him it.
Not that he really saw them having anymore concersations, but still. If the time came, he'd remember.
It came way sooner than he'd thought it would.
The weekend always went by too fast for Natsu. His two days off from school sure didn't feel like a break. He was left with homework, chores, and he was practicing guitar.
He had taken lessons for a couple years, but eventually he stopped. Life just got busier, and he couldn't find the time to play.
Natsu slightly regretted that. He would never admit it to his parents, so instead he looked stuff up online and relearned what he was once taught.
The weekend was when he got to practice the most, but he wished he could have a day of just doing nothing.
But it was Monday again, which would be a bummer to most people.
For Natsu, however, it was the one day of the week he was guaranteed to see Lucy.
He debated leaning against the handrail, but decided it would be better to not look like an idiot and opted to just stand normal.
Just as he got on to go up, she got on to go down.
She met his gaze, offering a warm smile and a "Hi, Natsu!"
'She remembered my name,' he thought.
"Hey, Lucy! Heading to another class?" He said as they neared each other.
"Yeah, and you?"
"Calculus," he groaned.
The passed each other, and Lucy giggled, wishing him good luck as they both went their separate ways.
Natsu walked in feeling refreshed, and not even Gray could get his spirits down.
That didn't stop Gray from trying, though.
Lucy's word of good luck made Natsu do what he hadn't done once in this class.
He tried to listen, and maybe understand the foreign language.
A couple things made sense, and a million things didn't. But overall, Natsu paid attention, bobbing his foot to the beat of his favorite song.
After, he walked Gray to his next class, then headed for the cafeteria.
He sat down at a table by himself, eating chips and listening to music, volume all the way up.
Natsu was in his own world. Everything had gone right that day, he couldn't stop smiling.
He felt a tap on his shoulder. He took an earbud out, turning to look up at—
Lucy?
He didn't realize it, but he must have said it out loud, because she laughed.
"That's me! Mind if I sit here? You can go back to listening to your music if you want, I don't mind."
He did the opposite, pulling out his other earbud and pausing the music completely, voicing his answer.
"Don't mind at all."
