Chapter 1: Second Chance

Subaru Natuski was a boy that got trapped in a world of strange unknowns. One where he had the power to return to a certain point after he was killed. The downside, he could never speak of this power to anyone. But we all know that story. This is what happened after the death of the Sloth Archbishop. (Season 1 ending.)

Subaru laid on the lap of the woman he loved most, Emilia. She had no last name, no family, no real home. So, he was determined to be that for her. He was determined to give her a home, a name of her own, and a family. He had already confessed his true feelings to her and was willing to wait for her to figure her own out. For now, the two sat in comfortable silence. The green field around them and the once battlefield in front. The wind blew against them and pushed Emilia's hair back. Her bright purple eyes caught the sun's light and shined. Subaru noticed this and wanted to comment, but he felt another thought tug at his mind. Rem.

"Emilia?" The brown haired boy sat up and moved next to the half-elf.

"Yes?" She answered in her melodic and angelic voice.

Subaru started to stand up. "We need to go. I want to go make sure Rem is okay." It wasn't that he didn't like what was happening with Emilia or that he was nervous, Rem had become dear to his heart and her safety was crucial.

"Okay. I bet Ram is worried sick about her." The half elf turned to see him staring off into space.

His mind ran wild with what could have happened in the time he had left her. Cultists could have attacked, another whale maybe, something felt off and he didn't know what. He just hoped that Rem and Crusch made it out safely.

"Subaru?" The voice of his angel woke him from his trance.

He once again got to his feet. "I-I'm fine. Come on, we need to get going." Subaru took her hand and gently lead her back to the carriage. "Hey, Otto. Can you take us to Crusch's mansion?"

Otto sat upon his driver's seat and whipped the reigns. "I don't see why not."

The two teens boarded the wagon and were soon off to the large manor. The ride was nice and quiet. Subaru, having just woken up from a long nap, was now host to Emilia's head on his shoulder. The stress of the day had taken its toll on the young girl. During the ride, she had lost all energy and dropped her head down. Instead of letting her head hang, Subaru moved her to his shoulder for a pillow. She looked so peaceful in her sleep. He then wrapped an arm around her shoulder and laid her down in the wagon with him changing her pillow from his shoulder to his chest. The smile on her face showed she approved.

After a few hours, the large mansion came into view. The sun had gone down, and the moon shined brightly. Emilia had since woken back up and was chatting with Subaru about his side of events.

"So, you really took down the Arch-bishop of sloth?" She asked amazed.

"Yea. I have to admit, I couldn't have done it without Julius and Wilhelm. They were the force behind my plan." Subaru soon saw what lay on the lawn of the manor.

Warriors, magicians, men young and old, laid across the grass. The center of attention was Crusch. Her hand had been lost in whatever battle had taken place. Felix, who had ridden in a wagon behind Subaru and Emilia, was an absolute wreck. Although Crusch's hand could be healed, the idea of this happening was heartbreaking.

Subaru frantically searched for the body of the blue haired maid that he had come to love. Not quite as much as Emilia, but a close second. Rows after rows of bodies. Some injured, some dead, and others left dazed and confused. Off to the side, he found a man standing over the one he searched for.

He quickly rushed over and slid on his knees to a stop next to her. "Rem. Rem! Can you hear me!?"

"She's out cold. I'm sorry, it's quite possible she won't wake up anytime soon. I've managed to keep her condition balanced." The healer took his leave.

Emilia soon caught up to Subaru and found him holding Rem to him. She gasped when she saw that Rem was not awake. Her clothes were covered in blood. "Oh my… Is she okay?"

"She seems fine. Just out of it." He gently laid her down on his lap as he held her head. "I'm so so sorry Rem. If I had known this was going to happen, I would have brought you with me." More tears fell as he looked down to see the maid stir in her sleep. A drop hit her face and she began to wake up. He laid her down on his lap so she could rest.

"Huh? W-Where am I?" The blue demon groaned as she turned and looked around. On her right, she saw the people she was in the convoy with on the way back to Crusch's mansion. In front of her, she saw a worried Emilia. Finally, she tilted her head up and left. There, she saw Subaru looking down into her eyes with a mix of concern and relief. "Subaru!" Without warning, Rem sat up and kissed him full force.

The young man could do nothing but sit as Rem smashed her lips into his. 'Woah, I didn't expect this reaction,' He thought to himself. As if on instinct, he began to kiss her back. He could feel the love and passion flow from her through her lips. The only issue came when someone cleared their throat behind them.

"Ahem."

Both of them turned to see Emilia with a blush on her cheeks and a frown on her face. The half elf wasn't sure how to feel. She had never had anyone tell her that they loved her and now, the man that did was kissing another girl right in front of her. 'Does he love me, or her?' Emilia tried to wipe away the confusion but only succeeded in overthinking.

"I'm sorry, Emilia. I got carried away." Rem bowed her head in shame.

"It's okay Rem. Take your time. I wish to speak with Crusch when she wakes up." Emilia stood from her kneeling position.

Rem sat there in the embrace of the one she loved most and watched as Emilia walked briskly away from them. "Did Rem do something wrong?" She asked Subaru as his gaze also followed her.

"Uh… I may have told Emilia that I loved her before we came here." His face fell realizing what he did. He had been so happy to see Rem awake, that he didn't think before reacting to what she was doing to him.

"I'm sorry, Subaru. I will go apologize to Emilia." Rem went to stand, but her legs failed and her knees buckled.

Subaru was quick to catch her. "I got you Rem. I've always got you." He then picked her up in a princess carry and moved her to Otto's wagon. As they walked through the crowds, Rem's face went a deep shade of crimson. This was something that she had only dreamed about. Subaru laid her down in the wagon and placed a soft sack of flour under her head. "There, I'll go find Emilia and try to make this right."

"O-Okay." She blushed hard as he walked off. 'I love Subaru. But if Subaru loves Emilia, what does that mean for me?'
