Chapter 18

No One's POV

Kai Residence

"I guess we should be leaving now… Kai-kun had a long day today" Aichi said as he stood up from the couch. He looked at Kai, sympathetically.

Aichi had been waiting for his friends in Kai's house with Rukino and Shingo after Ren assured him that everything is fine through a phone call. Aichi, Rukino and Shingo were updated about all the things when the others got back. Shingo and Naoki offered beverages while Rukino had offered the others to join them for dinner but they politely declined her. As soon as the gang came home, Aichi, Rukino and Shingo came running to them with worried faces. His friends had taken Kai to the hospital since his arm and head were bleeding, reasoning that it might get infected while Jun and the gang took care of the rest. Rukino had panicked when she saw Kai's bandages and Misaki's face but now she had calmed down. Now Misaki sat quietly and winced when Rukino pressed an icepack to her cheek while the others talked.

"Yeah, it's getting late and we have work tomorrow too" Miwa pointed out as he followed Aichi.

"Right. It's not like Kai would give us a day off anyway" Ren commented as he finished his coffee.

"You know, Ren, I can hear you" Kai cut in.

"That's why I said it" Ren countered smartly and Kai rolled his eyes. "Kidding! Well, let's go then" he said and stood up.

"Well then… See you soon, Misaki-chan! Can you gentlemen be dropping me off too?" Akari asked the men.

"Of course, Akari-san!" Miwa replied, grinning. "We'll be taking Kai's car" he added and Kai sighed.

"Fine. If Aichi is driving" Kai said and stood up. "And everyone… Thank you" he added with a small smile, causing others to grin at him.

"You're always welcome, Kai/Kai-kun" Ren and Aichi smiled.

"Anything for you, my friend! Aww… look he's embarrassed~…" Miwa laughed.

"I'm not"

"Wait… guys" Misaki finally spoke as she stood up, causing the others to pause. "Thank you for all you have done for me. I'm grateful… And I humbly apologize for all the trouble I have caused" she said, bowing slightly to the others. The others looked at her surprised.

"Nee-chan, don't be that formal with us! We're your friends" Miwa said, grinning at her.

"Yeah… Misaki-san… And you're always welcome!" Aichi smiled.

"Ne… Misa-Q, I know Kai's company can make you like a robot but loosen up, okay?" Ren patted Misaki's back, smiling and ignored Kai's glare. "Take care! See you tomorrow!" he added.

'I'm so glad Misaki-chan made such good friends! Besides… she has become livelier. I guess… it's because of him' Akari thought and smiled at Kai.

"Don't worry, Kai-san… You're a good company for Misaki-chan" Akari told Kai. 'And a good match!' she thought and smirked as she followed the men.

"A-chan is calling again… She worries so much!" Ren muttered as he received Asaka's call. "I'm fine, A-chan and everyone's fine… And I'll be home in few minutes" he talked and waved at others as he left. "Yes, I'm NOT driving" he told her, grumpily.

Kai smirked while Aichi, Miwa and Naoki laughed. Ren huffed.

"Yes… Shin-san… I'm fine. Yes-yes, he's fine but he's injured-… Okay. Take care… yes, bye" Misaki ended the call and sighed. "Thanks, Naoki" she added as she handed him his cell phone.

"No problem, Boss lady!" Naoki grinned at her. "Man… I'm hungry! What's for dinner, Granny glasses?" he asked, turning to Shingo.

"Don't call me that!" Shingo said and stood up. "I'll go and serve the dinner. Come on" he added and left. Naoki followed while Rukino was talking to Genryu over the phone.

"Misaki-chan, go get cleaned up. You must be hungry" said Rukino as she ended the call and followed the two. "Oh and call Toshiki for dinner too" she added and left before Misaki could protest.

Misaki sighed and leaned on the couch, facing the ceiling. Her mind reeled back at the recent event. She came to know after the conversation between Kai and Shigeo that Kai knew it was a trap yet he had come to rescue her. She recalled his behavior and how she witnessed his different side. She admitted that had been intimidating and just now she came to a realization that she really doesn't know him much. Her speculations about him had been wrong all the time. Now she understood his reason for not allowing her out of the house. But how did he know she'll be in danger was beyond her. She sighed for the umpteenth time.

"All things aside… First thing to do is… I have to apologize and thank him" she muttered and stood up. 'After a quick shower of course'

'What a long and exhausting day…!' Kai sighed as he thought about the day's events. Now all he wanted was good long rest…

Kai sat on his bed, his feet touching the floor; now all cleaned up, wearing a loose white sleeveless tee and cargo pants. Almost an hour had passed since they came back home. He was sure Rukino had informed his uncle about the incident by now. He glanced at his left hand which was bandaged from his bicep to the wrist. Some cuts were deeper than he had thought. There was a bandage wrapped around his head but it wasn't as severe as his arm. As soon as his friends left, he left to his room to clean up. Aichi and others enquired his wellbeing but Misaki hadn't spoken to him at all. Maybe after she saw his behavior today, she might be shocked, he thought. Or maybe she was upset after learning of Shigeo's treachery? He wondered. But he had to punch Shigeo after he saw Misaki's face, he couldn't help it. Shigeo had a nerve to scheme and challenge him like that and on top of it, he hit a woman. What infuriated him was that Shigeo had involved Misaki for a revenge against him. He hate people who betray others for their own selfishness. Besides, he had assured Shin that Misaki was safe in his house when Shin shared his worry with him. His thoughts were interrupted when a knock was heard.

"Come in"

"Kai…" Misaki called quietly as she entered and walked towards him. "I… I-I'm… uhh…" she stammered, looking at him. "I'm sorry" she apologized, surprising him. "It's because of me that you're injured and… You told me not to go out…" her voice trailed off as she fumbled with words.

Kai watched as Misaki stood a foot away from his bed. She was fidgeting and looking away from him as she spoke. He was surprised that she apologized and he could see concern on her face… for him. He suddenly felt happy that she was worried about him. She now stared at his face as if expecting him to say something and he did.

"Tokura, it's okay… as long as you admit that you're wrong since you decided not to follow my order" Kai said and smirked when she looked at the floor. She looked like a kid who was being scolded for her mistakes and is too embarrassed to look at him. "Say it" he stated amused, causing her eyebrow to twitch.

"I… was wrong and you were… right" she said, looking at his bandaged arm.

"Relax, Tokura. I was just kidding" said Kai and patted his bed, "Have a seat". Misaki took a seat beside him, reluctantly.

"No… really, Kai… You're injured because of me. I'm really sorry" she said, clenching her fists and staring at his arm. "And then that gunshot! W-what if-…"

"Tokura, stop feeling guilty. He was out to get me… one way or another. Besides, he challenged me and no one plays with the Kai name" he cut in. "In fact, I should also apologize… You were in danger too because I didn't tell you the reason sooner" he added, surprising Misaki.

"So…?" she said, looking away from him.

"So what?" he asked.

"You said you should apologize too"

"Hn" his reply made Misaki frown but was surprised when she felt his hand on her cheek. She turned to him in shock when he lightly caressed her swollen cheek with his thumb.

"K-Kai? What are you-…?"

"I promised Shin-san you will be safe here yet this happened to you" he said softly, looking at her split lip and bluish hue that had formed near her cheek as she stared at him with wide eyes.

Misaki blinked and noticed his apologetic look. He didn't say 'sorry' but his face told her. She put her hand over his that was on her cheek and gave a light squeeze to his hand. She smiled at him, her true smile and her crystal blue eyes were shining. He was sure his heart missed a beat at that. Suddenly feeling hard to breath, he retracted his hand from hers and looked away from her eyes.

"It's okay… It's not your fault. Besides, I'm strong, you know" she chuckled at her sentence to lighten the mood.

"I know…" he added after a pause.

"Kai…" she called to get his attention. She continued when he looked at her, "Thank you… for everything you have done for me"

"Hn" Kai merely grunted when he could see the sincerity in her eyes as she spoke. "You're being weird all of a sudden, Tokura. Are you trying to make me uncomfortable? Or are you up to something again?" he asked in suspicion as he was feeling uncomfortable for real. 'What's… this strange feeling…?' he thought and frowned.

Misaki laughed and Kai could only stare at her in surprise. Since this was the first time he heard her laughing wholeheartedly and because of him. He felt good when he realized he had made her laugh. He smiled. He never imagined that a day would come when they both will be sitting like this and he would smile with satisfaction.

"I'm being sincere, Kai. And in return I'll do the same… I'll do whatever I can to help you when you are in need" she told him with a grin and he felt a tug at his heart.

"Then I'll take your word for it, Tokura" he gave a smile as they sat in comfortable silence. "Are you alright…?" he asked when he saw she looked deeply in thought.

"Aa… It's just-… It's weird… I had known for a while that… it's someone from my Company… but now that I know who it is, it's hard to believe… I trusted him yet… It's just sad… Anyway, I can finally rest easy and focus on my Company" she shared her thought.

"You really love your Company" he said after a while as she smiled at the thought.

"Yes… It's the only thing left of my parents… They had worked so hard for it. It's the most important thing to me. That's why I decided to take over when I learned it was going down. Even if it is not as much progressing right now, I'll never give it up" she said while Kai listened. "I'll work hard and one day, I'll be at your level" she told him with determination as she stood up and faced him.

"Then I have to be prepared for a new business rival" Kai smirked at her.

Misaki was about to speak but the door to his room opened, surprising the two and revealed his uncle Genryu who looked out of breath.

"…"

"Toshiki! Wh-…" Genryu paused when he noticed Misaki standing there. "YOU?! What are you doing here?" he asked, rather rudely, glaring at her.

"I… I was…" Misaki chocked out in surprise.

"She came to check up on me, Uncle. And to call me for dinner" Kai cut in and turned to Misaki as he said, "We'll be there in few minutes"

Misaki nodded awkwardly as she recognized this was the infamous Genryu Kai. And she left hurriedly since Genryu's aura wasn't welcoming. His glare was enough to tell her to leave. She could almost feel the hateful gaze from Genryu until she exited. Genryu turned to Kai once the door closed after Misaki.

"Toshiki, how can you act this reckless? This is… This is just ridiculous! For her?" Genryu was angry as he referred Misaki. "Look at you!" he said, worried. "What am I to do with you?" he questioned to himself, pinching the bridge of his nose in exasperation.

"Uncle, I'm fine. Don't be worried. These are just some cuts-…"

"Quiet! Just look at yourself!" Genryu continued. "You were just fine this afternoon and now I see you like this! You think it's funny to give me such surprises? First, your relationship and now this, on the same day? I just don't understand…" he said, frowning at the nephew who looked down guiltily.

"I'm sorry… for worrying you like this" Kai apologized. "I apologize for earlier today too. I shouldn't have behaved like that" he said, looking at the floor. Genryu sighed as he reached Kai and patted his shoulder.

"Toshiki… You know I have no one else but you… Please, don't act so recklessly" Genryu said quietly. "Is she worth going through this trouble? So much that you chose her wellbeing instead of yours?" he questioned, frowning and Kai was surprised at the words.

'How should I put it…? It's not like that… I don't know… But after that bold declaration…' Kai thought referring to Miwa's idea and ran a hand through his hair, exasperated.

"Uncle… It's just that… I gave my word to her uncle" Kai explained. "Besides, that man was out to get me. She was just a bait. He would want revenge one way or another" he said. He watched as Genryu shook his head and sighed.

"Fine. You can take her side as much as you want but still I am not going to approve of her. For I know, you went there because of her and it could have been worse" stated Genryu and turned to leave. "Let's go and have dinner" he said and Kai followed after registering his uncle's words.

'He's totally serious about Tatsunagi's and my marriage…' Kai thought.

To be continued…
