Chapter 14: The Energy
Rem didn't know what to say. She just heard the man she loved more than anything, tell her that he was going home. Now, that wouldn't be so bad if it was a town or large city away, but he lived in another dimension. One where demons did not exist.
"Wha-What was that?" She asked, hoping she heard him wrong.
"Betty is helping me go home." Subaru took a step to her and looked in her eyes as tears form.
Beatrice was able to read what was about to happen and left the two alone for a bit, claiming she needed another book.
Once, they were alone, Subaru knelt before the demon. "Rem. I want to go home. You know that. My parents are probably worried sick about me. I've been here for a long time. With that said, I plan to take someone with me when I leave." He stood back to his feet. "I want that person to be you."
Now Rem was completely lost. "I-I don't understand. You love Emilia, don't you?"
"You clearly missed that part of Roswaal's conversation. He told me to look at my surroundings. That if I was going to choose, to choose the one that makes me feel like I deserve their love. Rem, you remind me everyday how much you love me. After all I've done, after the Hell I've put you through, you never fail to smile around me."
"That's because I love Subaru." She blushed.
"Yes, that's what helped me make my decision. Rem, I want you to be the one that comes back with me."
Rem didn't even think about it. "Yes!" She fell into his awaiting arms and cried tears of joy. After all this time, he had chosen her. The man she loved had picked her. "But, what about Emilia?"
Subaru stood back up. "I had a talk with Emilia earlier. She told me that she isn't sure what she wants right now. She's not sure if she understands love enough to say she loves me too."
"But, you pledged yourself to her?"
"That much is still true. I still plan to help Emilia with the crown. However, I've made my important decision. Rem, you're the one that I want to spend my life with. You're the one I can see myself building a future with. You've been with me through thick and thin, and smiled the entire way. I love you Rem, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
After his speech, Rem wrapped her arms around him and declared she'd never let go. In her eyes, this was probably as close to a marriage proposal as she ever thought she'd get. "Subaru?"
"Yes?"
"If there are no demons in your world, what will people think of me?"
"In Japan, there are old legends of demons, but no one really notices. People learn to look around things they don't really care for. You being a demon won't get in the way of anybody." He placed his hand on her shoulder.
She looked up to his face and smiled. "Then I would love to go with you."
"Are you two done yet, I suppose?" Betty asked as she walked around the corner. No doubt she heard the entire thing.
"Oh, Betty's coming with me too. I promised her something that you can only get in my world."
"What would that be?" Subaru pulled out his phone and showed Rem the picture of him and Betty smiling. "Aw, its adorable." She looked over at the great spirit who only blushed.
"Betty is naturally adorable." She stated and sat back down with her book.
Rem just stared at the device in her hands for a second. "Subaru?"
"Yes?"
"Can we get one of these too?"
"What do you mean Rem? If you're going to come with me to my world, we're going to take a lot of pictures together." His smile transferred to her as she handed the device back.
"I have one more question."
"Shoot."
"Would we be able to come back here? I don't want to be apart from Sissy forever." Her face looked down as she might have to rethink her decision to choose between sister and the man she loved.
Subaru didn't know what to say. To be honest, he hadn't thought that far ahead. He was caught up in the excitement of being able to go home that he never considered how he could come back.
Before he could think of an excuse, Betty came to his rescue. "I've already thought of that, I suppose." She pulled out an orb with a blue gem and another with a pink gem. "These two are linked. I can keep one here in the library, and one gets taken to your world. That way, the two are linked by a small dimensional door." She smiled at her little creation.
"Wow." He stood and looked at the spirit in amazement. He knew she had great power, but this was incredible. "Thank you, Betty."
"I only did this, so I can come back here and retrieve books from the library when needed. I suppose." She flashed a small smile followed by a deadpanned look.
"You're planning to stay with us?" Rem asked. She had hoped it would just be her and Subaru.
"Some of the time. Subaru promised me I would never feel alone again. Of course, I would never get too much into your personal lives…" She trailed off not knowing what to say next.
Subaru smiled and hugged Betty. "That's okay with me, Betty." He would just have to make sure that he and Rem got a big enough house that could hold all three of them. "Speaking of which, how are we going to get money? I didn't have a lot back home. Hell, I spent it all on manga and anime." (Haven't we all Subaru)
Betty looked around her library. "There are treasures here that I don't mind parting with. It's possible those of your world will pay a hefty price for them."
Both Subaru and Rem smiled. "Thank you, Betty. I know that these all belonged to her, and its hard to part with some of them."
"No, Roswaal stored useless items he came across in here." Her tone was once again deadpanned as if she didn't care.
Rem was stilled trying to take it all in. First, she learns that Subaru, the man she saw as her hero, had chosen her to love and be with. Second, she learned that not only had Beatrice been searching for a way for him to go home, but that he planned to take her with him.
"So, how long do you think it will take to find the right one?"
"Hmmm…" Betty took another look in her book. "I can't say for sure, but I have found some interesting ones."
"How so?" Subaru sat on the stool next to her. Rem looked over his shoulder.
"I found a world where there are three factions in a constant state of war. Although they appear to be in stalemate now. Angels, Devils, and Fallen Angels."
'Why does that sound familiar?'
"I found another where these undead beings roam the Earth. I don't believe that would be your home." Betty giggled at the obvious answer. "One more caught my eye. It appears like the planet itself was stripped bare of all resources. The people there live in large mobile domes."
"Wait, wait, wait. You're telling me that these places exist?" Subaru asked dumbfounded.
Rem was also confused. "What is it?"
"All of these worlds line up with different fiction novels in my world. A three way holy war, zombies, and the domes. It all lines up. You're telling me that they aren't just fiction?"
Beatrice smiled. "It would appear that way, I suppose." She flipped another page and closed her eyes. "This one is very normal. Well, normal as in low magic. Let's see…" She flipped the page a bit. Apparently, each world had a couple of pages on it.
'Where did Echinda find this thing?' Subaru thought.
"Hmm… Subaru, what city did you say was close to you?"
"Kyoto, but I imagine there are more than one world with that city."
She flipped another page. "How about Kuoh?"
"No, that one is not familiar."
Rem just sat back and watched. She had never seen him so excited but yet so calm about it.
The great spirit flipped to the last page. "Alright. This is promising."
"What can you see?"
"I see a man and a woman. They are standing in a park with papers." Betty focused on the papers. "The language is unfamiliar, but the picture is."
Rem spoke up as Betty's eye opened. "What is the picture?"
"Him." She pointed at Subaru. Beatrice had found his parents, she found his home.
