Chapter 33

No One's POV

"I said I'm fine" Kai said in annoyance as he was surrounded by his friends.

"No, you aren't" Miwa countered. 'His uncle will have my head if he finds out…' he sighed.

A band aid was applied over the wound on Kai's right temple. It wasn't much of a big injury but if Genryu Kai finds out, the consequences will be bigger. Having such accident on a vacation when Kai had refused to be surrounded by guards was a big no-no. A log fell on him and he wasn't fast enough to escape it but he was lucky enough to fall on the beach sand. Since he had a bleeding forehead, everyone had panicked…

"You need some rest" Aichi said.

"Are you sure you don't have a concussion?" Miwa said.

"Maybe we should take him to hospital" Sharlene added.

"Yeah. He almost passed out" Jillian commented.

"He needs to lie down" Asaka pointed out.

"Will you guys stop fussing over me?" Kai looked annoyed.

"I brought you some fruits" Ren added.

"…" everyone looked at Ren in surprise.

"Aichi, take him out please" Kai sighed out.

"Miwa, don't annoy him" Ren told the blonde.

"It's you he's talking about" Miwa sweatdropped.

"No. It's you" Ren countered.

"Get out both of you" Leon gritted out while Kai rubbed his temple.

Akari looked at Misaki who hadn't said a word since Kai was brought back to his room. She could see the guilt and unshed tears her friend tried to hide from everyone. The argument was on the way and the patient needed some break from the chatter so Kourin stepped in.

"I think we all should leave and let him rest" Kourin said, looking at everyone.

"But we can't just leave him all by himself!" Ren argued.

"I'm not a kid" Kai cut in but others ignored him.

"Misaki-chan will stay" Akari stated.

At that, everyone looked at Misaki who was quiet till now. Misaki looked reluctant and her eyes fell at her feet in guilt while the others agreed with the idea.

"I don't need babysitting" Kai stated, sending a glare at Misaki who sighed.

"Fine" Misaki agreed.

"Great! It's settled then. Let's go everyone! We got work!" Akari said and exited the room.

"It was an accident. So don't blame yourself" Leon gave a firm pat on Misaki's shoulder before leaving.

"You don't have to stay if you don't want to" Kai stated, refusing to look at her.

Misaki glanced at Kai and her eyes fell on his bandaged forehead. Despite Leon's assurance, her mind wasn't at ease. She felt rush of emotions and Akari's words rang in her head again…

"…You'll lose him! You want that…?"

"I'm… sorry" Misaki said, her eyes falling at her feet.

"…" Kai looked at her then.

"This is all my fault…" she continued, never meeting his eyes and his frown loosened.

Kai didn't want her to blame herself. There was a shuffling sound and she glanced his way only to be surprised that he was standing beside her. He stood a step away and was looking out of the window.

"I did what I want, Tokura"

"You're just saying that" her voice dripped of sadness and he could sense it "What if-… What if something had happened to you and -…!"

"I'm fine, Tokura. It's just a scratch" he shrugged, looking at her. "Are you really that worried about me?" he asked, amused.

"Of course, I am! E-Everyone is worried" she replied and his lips twitched upwards. "Please don't risk your life for me again" she told him.

"Don't give yourself such importance, Tokura…" he said, smiling at her and she blinked.

"Kai, you-… I don't understand when you're joking and when you aren't" she shook her head. "But I'm serious" she definitely looked serious and he sighed.

"I'll do what I want, Tokura" he told her. "Next time, listen to what I'm saying" he said.

"Are you even listening to what I'm saying?" her voice came out a little louder than she intended.

"I know you're worried but… If you keep talking like that, it won't help my head, Tokura" he pointed at his bandaged head and she gave in.

"Sorry… I'm just…" Misaki fidgeted and he noticed when her hand reached to grab his hand. "I… won't be able to forgive myself if anything happens to you because of me… Like last time" she said.

Kai listened to her and watched as her reluctant hand went back to her side without touching him, fist closed. He smiled lightly when she tried to hide her action by rubbing her fist against the forearm of her other arm, awkwardly. He looked out the window again, his eyes looking far in a distance.

"Hn…" he muttered. 'Well, I'm no Prince charming… But I can be a Knight' he thought.

"What… do you wanted to talk about?" she asked, quietly.

There was a brief pause before he spoke. Wind caressed their hairs and she waited in anticipation as he turned to her, his face glowing with happiness.

"I got your present"

"Oh-…"

"…!?" Misaki's eyes widened when Kai hugged her. It was utterly unexpected…

"I like it. Thank you…" he said, his chin resting on her shoulder.

It was just a light, friendly hug but it left her heart racing. His breath tickled her ear and she gulped the lump in her throat. She just stood there, dumbfounded for a second. On the other hand, he felt it was natural for him to hug her. He acted on his instinct. And he would have held her longer if she hadn't shifted. He straightened and she noticed his genuine smile.

"T-that's… Uh… You're acting unlike yourself" she said, averting her eyes when his eyes showed gentle look. 'D-don't look at me like that…' she thought, turning to look outside the window, heart thumping wildly.

"Really…?" he seemed to be smiling as he went back to his bed. "Maybe I've lost it, Tokura…" he said, flopping down on his bed.

"Very funny" she was smiling, ignoring her racing heart. "Anyway, you… umm… You can call me Misaki… like everyone else" she told him.

"I'll stick with 'Tokura'…" he decided. "Only I call you that" he added, quietly.

"Ha?"

"Well, don't disturb me. I'll be taking a nap"

Meanwhile…

Leon had left downstairs since he had to carry out his duties while the gang was lounging on the large balcony of the second floor. Kourin, Akari and Asaka were chatting in the shade about random things but they were concerned for Kai's wellbeing while Ren, Miwa and Aichi were nearby.

"I hope it doesn't rain on the festival day…" Kourin said.

"Leon-san said it'll be clear… but still it's unpredictable" Akari shrugged.

"Hmm… Although it hadn't rained since we got here…" Asaka commented.

"Aa. Well, the air feels… damp and it's getting windy" Kourin pointed out.

"Yeah. I wanted to go swimming …but Kai-san got injured" Akari sighed. "Maybe, we can all go tomorrow" she told them.

"That's a good idea. We'll relax on beach" Kourin nodded.

"I'm in. We should ask others as well" Asaka smiled.

On the other hand, the men were discussing something else…

"Am I supposed to tell of this incident to (Genryu) Kai-sama…?" Miwa asked in doubt.

The men glanced at each other than shook their heads. Genryu Kai would always send his men to protect Kai but this time Genryu trusted Kai's safety on Miwa and Ren. Besides, Kai was safe in Leon's territory according to Genryu…

"Uncle Kai would cancel his 'birthday gift', you know. I don't want that" Ren stated.

"Yeah… Kai-kun hardly gets any vacation" Aichi pointed out.

'And he'll kill me if he's called back when Nee-chan is here…' Miwa thought.

"Ok…"

"He's had worse. It's just a small scratch" Ren shrugged.

"Well, that's true… He'll be roaming around freely by tomorrow" Miwa said.

"Anyway, how's it going at Tatsunagi's, Aichi?" Ren asked and Aichi smiled.

"It's alright. We're handling it together" Aichi shared "Suiko-san is very diligent and kind too"

"You aren't missing us, are you?" Ren narrowed his eyes at Aichi.

"Of course, I do!" Aichi laughed. "That's why I sent messages- Wait… You still forget to keep your cellphone on" he complained to Ren who shrugged.

"Well… it's not that I forget…"

RING-RING-RING~

Ren's cellphone started ringing. He glanced at the screen and frowned. He rejected the call and turned to the conversation when it rang again…

RING-RING-RING~

"Is there any problem…?" Miwa quirked an eyebrow and Aichi looked at Ren, quizzically.

Ren clicked his tongue in annoyance which he hardly does. The others looked at him and he smiled at them as he rejected the call again. Ren would never ever reject anyone's call and the ones who knew him know that. Asaka glanced at Ren, confused as she was nearby. The third time it rang, Ren sighed.

"Nope" Ren replied Miwa and received the call before he said "Hey! What is it?"

Miwa, Asaka and Aichi glanced at each other when Ren walked off to the other side, away from them. They knew something was wrong as Ren looked exasperated as he spoke over the phone. Asaka looked worried as she walked over to Miwa and Aichi. She had seen her boss acting like that ever since she got sick. She had noticed him like that in the office as well. It was very obvious when a happy-go-lucky guy starts frowning. The three watched Ren from afar and he seemed to be annoyed as well as serious. It was clear he was dealing with some problem.

"Do you know anything about this, Asaka-chan?" Miwa enquired.

"No… Only one thing… His mood always gets off when he receives some call…" Asaka said, worried for her boss.

"I see…" Miwa and Aichi glanced at each other as if they knew something. 'It must be his family…' the two thought, simultaneously.

Kai's room

There was a comfortable silence in the room. True to his words, Kai was comfortably napping on the bed for the last twenty minutes while Misaki was quietly reading some book on the couch… well, she tried. She gave up reading when she couldn't concentrate. Her jumbled mind wouldn't let her focus and her eyes would wander back at the napping brunette. She looked at her hand, recalling her reluctance before. How come he hugged her so easily when she was so reluctant to touch him? She kept the book on the coffee table in front of her and stood up, annoyance written on her face.

"Are you really that worried about me?"

Not only worried but she knew she had panicked. She had felt like… her heart had stopped. Like Aichi had reacted when he thought something had happened to Kourin…

Earlier when he had hugged her, her hands had shifted up to hold him. And if he hadn't pulled back, she would've tightly hugged him back. And it would've been inappropriate…

Again, her eyes landed on resting man on the bed and he seemed to be fast asleep. Her eyes softened. The breezy wind flowed in through the windows and balcony and caressed her. Something was happening to her… something had already happened to her, she surmised. She stepped towards him, feeling jittery. She didn't know the reason but she stared at his face as she stood beside his bed. All she could see was him and she felt like she was in a trance as she stood admiring him. He was the only one who made her feel like that. Akari's words kept ringing in her head. She admitted that her best friend was indeed correct. His actions towards her… He must really care for her… He risked his life for her. He was always there when she needed help even though she never asked him. And somehow… he had made his way into her heart. Realization hit her hard but she wasn't surprised. Rather… she felt her mind at ease at the acceptance.

'He's the one…'

She exhaled lightly. She smiled as she bent over him, not really touching him.

'I don't know why you do all this… Or what you think about me. But now I know what I feel…' she closed her eyes.

"…Thank you, Kai…" she whispered as she lightly kissed on his forehead.

"…"

"To-kura…?"

Misaki snapped her eyes open only to stare in those mesmerizing turquoise eyes. She jerked back and stood upright, flustered and fidgeting while he stared at her face, unblinking. His slightly wide eyes told her that he knew… He knew what she did and she fumbled for words.

"I-…! I'm j-just…!" she averted her eyes from his.

"Did... you just…?" Kai blinked in surprise.

"You're just d-dreaming!" she exclaimed and hastily ran to the door, embarrassed.

"…!" the door snapped shut and he could only stare at the door.

Kai just sat there. He touched his temple and he realized his heart beating faster than usual. He woke up when he had heard her voice. And if he hadn't been a witness himself, he wouldn't have believed that she just… kissed on his temple. He tried to calm his heart and his cheeks felt a little flushed.

'What… just happened…?' he thought as he ran his hand through his hair.

Suddenly, the door to his room opened and in came Miwa and Aichi.

"Nee-chan just ran-… Kai, you okay…?" Miwa asked the dazed brunette.

"Hn…?"

"His… face is flushed" Aichi notified and Miwa looked amused.

"And why is that?" Miwa cleared his throat and Kai shot a glare at them.

"Get out"

To be continued…
