What are you doing, Yang? Yang chided herself while kicking off her shoes. Ugh… get it together. You are normally confident and charming… why are you such a wuss when it comes to Blake? She flopped facedown on the bed and groaned. Yang couldn't believe she just lied to Blake about having a group meeting just to get out of the situation as she was freaking out after she just 'casually invited her into her room'. Way to go Yang, it's finals period, why would there be a group meeting? She definitely saw through your lie!
Mentally shaking away her ridiculous thoughts surrounding the black-haired girl, Yang decided to get some studying done. Coincidentally, Yang was taking Introduction to Psychology that semester, and her final paper was coming up soon. Taking out her psychology textbook, Yang's thoughts wandered, hmmm… Maybe I can use this as an excuse to hang out with Blake, I could pretend to ask her about some psychology concepts… no! Yang shook her head violently, snap out of it Yang! Focus on your exam. Sighing, Yang buckled down and started to study.
After 2 hours of intense concentration, Yang decided it was time for a break. A quick glance at her watch told her that it was 6pm, just in time for a good shower. Grabbing a towel, Yang headed for the toilet, just in time to see a head of black hair disappearing into the corner cubicle. Huh.
Shrugging it off, Yang undressed in the nearest cubicle, only to faintly hear her favourite song from the corner cubicle.
"If only there was a place for me to be me…"
Wait… Isn't that Nightshade? This has to be Nightshade, I've heard that voice singing that song thousands of times - it's unmistakably her! Yang's heart hammered in her chest. So the mysterious singing girl the past few weeks had been Nightshade all along! Excited, Yang started to call out, but decided against making any noise. No… based on our past interactions, if I call her out on it now, she will immediately stop singing and leave. Yang stood awkwardly in the shower, naked, not daring to turn on the faucet.
"Wandering around, will I ever be free?"
Hold on, Blake and I had just been talking about that song earlier today, and I know now that Nightshade has black hair, as does Blake… could the mysterious singing girl be Blake, and could Blake be… Nightshade?! Yang's mind was swimming with a thousand thoughts. What are the odds that someone else staying on the 18th floor knows of Nightshade and would be singing this specific song today? Yang's eyes widened. This is too much of a coincidence, Blake is the mysterious girl a.k.a. Nightshade! It makes so much sense now.
Still unsure of what to do, Yang stood frozen to the spot, eyes rapidly darting around the confines of her cubicle.
Crap, what should I do, should I reveal myself to her or pretend to be clueless? I can't just stand here until she is done with her shower, that is beyond creepy!
Deciding to just play dumb, Yang turned on her shower head and started to shower. As soon as the sound of water started, true enough, the "mystery singing girl" stopped singing. Yang sighed, disappointed that her prediction turned out to be correct.
After a few minutes, Yang absentmindedly started singing "If only there was a place for me to be me… Wandering around, will I ever be free?"
"Y-yang? Is that you?"
Oh crap.
Blake was in the shower, the hot water droplets hitting against her back. She thought back to how Yang shared Nightshade's song with her, pleasantly surprised that the blonde felt comfortable enough to open up to her about her song preferences. I can't believe she likes my song and even listens to it frequently while she works out… Blake blushed, imagining Yang's biceps flexing while lifting weights, shaking out her voluminous hair as sweat rolled down her abs... No, no, stop it! Imagine how Yang will react if she finds out about the inappropriate thoughts you have… she'll be so disgusted that she'll never talk to you again.
Sighing, Blake started singing the song which she had forgotten about years ago.
"If only there was a place for me to be me…"
Before Blake reached the 2nd chorus, she heard the sound of the showerhead being switched on from another cubicle.
Shit! Blake stopped singing, self-conscious that another person might hear her. Showering awkwardly, she just wanted to rush through it so she could leave as soon as possible.
"If only there was a place for me to be me… Wandering around, will I ever be free?"
Blake heard a carefree voice coming from the other cubicle. Wait, am I hearing things? Who could be singing my song? No one knows of Nightshade, there are only a few thousand listens on Spotify! What a coincidence that someone in Frangipani dorm knows this song…
Wait. Blake's eyes snapped open as the obvious hit her.
Oh my goodness. Yang.
Freaking out, Blake continued showering, ignoring the anxiety building in the pit of her stomach. What should I do? Should I acknowledge her or just pretend I didn't hear anything? I mean, she doesn't know I'm here right… Oh who am I kidding. She knows.
Tentatively, Blake half-whispered, "Y-yang? Is that you?"
The silence stretched on for half a minute. Cue mild panic attack.
Maybe I was right the first time, she doesn't actually know I'm here! I should have just kept quiet-
"Blake? Oh hey! Fancy bumping into you here!" Yang chuckled.
Wow, her voice is so soothing, Blake blushed as her tiny crush on Yang grew. "Nice song choice," Blake teased.
"Heh. I heard you singing but didn't want to disturb you so I kept quiet when you were singing hoping you wouldn't realise I was here… and then I absentmindedly started singing too just because the song's stuck in my head. I wasn't trying to mock you, I swear! Oh God, this is embarrassing," Yang's cheeks burned as she realised she just admitted to listening in on Blake's private shower time.
"Yang, relax! I know you didn't mean any ill intent. In fact, I'm touched that you stayed silent to not startle me while I was singing… Thank you for that," Blake smiled, although Yang could not see it.
Yang let out an internal sigh of relief, "Anytime, Blake."
The two girls continued their showers in relatively comfortable silence, with the exceptions of their quickened heart rate and slight blushes.
Yep, I'm in trouble.
Little did they know that the other was also harbouring the exact same thought.
