Chapter 20: Zero

Six months.

Six months had gone by since she saw the man she loved walk into the portal and disappear. Emilia was getting ready for a final event in the capital in the next few days. There, the new queen of Lugnica would be chosen. She prayed that she could pull it off without him, but she was very nervous.

Ram wasn't much better. She hadn't seen her baby sister in six months after Subaru took her away with him. When the portal first crashed, she almost killed Beatrice out of anger. If it wasn't for Roswaal taking her away, she may have actually killed the spirit. Her duties as a maid were suspended for a few weeks to give her time to come to terms with what may have happened. Now, she was lonely. Rem was her other half.

There were days that both Emilia and Ram met in Subaru's room to sit in Beatrice's library. There they just watched the portal together, praying that the one's they loved made it back safely.

Today was one of those days where they met. Ram was first in the room and began cleaning the dust out of the library. About an hour later, Emilia came in.

"Good morning Ram."

Ram turned back to the mistress she served. Through all of this, they had gotten closer and become friends. "Hello, lady Emilia." The maid bowed.

"You don't have to call me that. Emilia is just fine, you know."

"Yes, but it is improper to address my mistress that way."

"We are in private here Ram. It's fine."

"Yes, Emilia." Ram smiled a bit. Emilia was her friend now, even if she was the rival of her sister. "Are you leaving for the capital soon?"

"Yes. I was hoping to come here one last time and see if he... if they came back to us." Emilia sat in her chair and faced the portal's entrance.

Ram pulled up her chair and did the same. "Would you like me to accompany you and Lord Roswaal to the capital?"

"There's no need. I think that Otto can take care of us. Thank you though Ram." Things went silent between them as the portal made it's steady whirring sound.

30 or so minutes went by with only small talk between the two. Emilia would talk about going into the village and playing with the children and Ram would speak of her past. The pink haired demon had gotten better with accepting what had happened and could talk about it with her friend.

"The funny thing is, I think Petra misses him as much as we do." Emilia giggled a bit before sighing. In the six months apart, she'd never once lost her feelings for Subaru, if anything, they grew.

"Yea. He may be an idiot, but he is a lovable idiot." Ram's comment got both of them giggling. The clock in the library struck 11. "It's almost time for you to go, is it not?"

"I think I can stay a little longer. Just, just in case." Emilia sat back and sighed. This could be the last time she got a chance to do this. "Please Subaru, come home."

Another five minutes went by and nothing changed. Ram stood and began to pack her cleaning supplies. "I'm sorry Emilia. I don't think they're coming back today." With another sigh, Emilia stood as well. She touched her hand over her heart an exited the room.

Just as she walked out, the whirring of the portal got louder. Ram spun around to see the portal glowing brighter. "What in the..." Thinking quick, she ran out of the room into the hall, hoping she was in time. "Emilia! The portal!"

The half elf turned and sprinted back in. Indeed, the portal was louder and brighter. Finally, a figure appeared. However, it was not the one they were expecting. Beatrice stepped out.

"Hmm. Someone has been keeping Betty's room clean, I suppose." She walked all the way out and grabbed another book off of her shelf. "Oh, Emilia, Ram. I was not expecting you here."

Both the other two were stunned. They hadn't seen Betty in six months and she hadn't seemed to change a bit. Beatrice noticed their stunned looks and totally turned to face them. "They'll be here shortly. Rem had to pack a bag of things." She wasn't going to spoil the surprise.

Ram's face lit up. "They're coming back! Lady Emilia, did you hear that?"

Emilia turned back to the portal and pointed. Two more silhouettes appeared hand in hand. A second later, both were also in the room. Rem and Subaru were home.

The room was silent for a second before Ram made her way towards her sister. She would have jumped and given her a big hug had it not been for Rem's condition. "Rem? What is this?" She pointed at Rem's middle which had grown exponentially.

"Sister, Rem is pregnant." The blue demon wiped a tear from her eye as she hugged her sister. "I've missed you so much." The two sister's cried as they held each other.

Subaru simply smiled. His left hand shown a bright silver ring to match the one Rem wore. While he watched Rem and Ram, another's eyes drew him away. "Emilia."

"S-Subaru." Emilia ran over to him and threw her arms over his neck. "You're back! You're back!"

"Yea, we're back." He returned the hug and rubbed her back. "I've missed you so much."

"I've missed you too."

Puck popped out of his crystal. "You've been gone awhile Subaru."

"Yep, things took a while to set up."

"What kind of things?"

"We'll explain later."

After the individual greetings were done, Rem hugged Emilia while Ram joined Subaru. "You miss me at all Ram?" Subaru chuckled.

"N-No. You wish." She turned away with a blush.

"Ah come on. Not even a little bit?"

"Maybe a little." Ram was surprised when his arm pulled her into a side hug. "Maybe a lot."

Eventually, the topic of the room became Rem. Ram was still astonished and Emilia was a bit jealous. Subaru stood next to Rem and hugged her to his side. "Yea, we figured out Rem was pregnant about five months ago."

Ram almost exploded. "You didn't give her time to adjust at all!"

"No! Subaru isn't to blame. Rem... may have forced him a few times." Rem turned away in a blush. It was true that there were times that she almost raped him. "B-But, we're married now." She picked up her left hand a showed off the silver band. About three months into their stay on the other side, Subaru and Rem moved into their own home and got married. She explained that this was part of the reason that it took so long to get back. They had to move into the new house and establish a stable doorway for the portal.

As the six of them talked, Roswaal came in. "Emiiiilia. It's time to... Oh? Weeeeelcome hoooomme Subaru, Rem." It appears the manor's lord hadn't changed at all.

"Thank you, Roswaal." Subaru bowed, as did Rem. He then turned to Emilia. "You have somewhere to be?"

"Y-Yes. Today is the day the crown will be decided." Her pale cheeks were red with nervousness.

"Well, let's go."

"What do you mean?"

"I told you that I would help you win the crown. Here I am. Let's go get you that crown." Subaru smiled as he took Emilia's hand.

"B-But what about Rem?" She turned back to the pregnant demon. "Won't she need you?"

Rem smiled. "Thank you, Lady Emilia. But I'm fine here with my sister. You need to focus on the crown. And Subaru."

"Yes, my love?"

"Don't get yourself killed." The two of them laughed. The curse that was once placed on him had become a joking point. Emilia and Ram were very lost.

With on final kiss goodbye, they left for the capital.

One year later

Subaru and Rem sat on the couch in there home in Japan. In Rem's arms, their beautiful daughter Spica. She had Rem's eyes with Subaru's hair. Her little bear onesie kept the three month old warm and snuggly. On the other couch, Emilia sat with Ram. The half elf rested her arms on her growing middle. Emilia was three months pregnant with Subaru's baby. She had dubbed it a reward, for gaining her the crown.

That's right. Despite all odds, Emilia became the next queen of Lugnica. Subaru was able to explain all the good she's done on her behalf and all she could do in the future. This testimony was almost enough by itself to sway the vote. In the end, Emilia's head was the one to wear the crown.

Now, they were all taking time to relax in Japan and enjoy their lives together.

Well, that's it. I wrote all of this in one sitting at like 1 am, so I might need to redo parts, but that's fine. Other than that, it's been fun guys. It feel's nice to have a completed story under my belt. I have two major ones and a few minors but this one was the most interesting to write. I fell in love with Re:Zero after watching the first few episodes. I had to admit, it was slow going, but I'm glad I stuck with it. I can't wait to see season three, whenever that is. And for the last time on this story, TurboKnight, over and out.
