Originally this was going to be a one chapter fanfic.

Then a scene popped into my head. As I gave it a little thought, it seemed to be a perfect starting point/reason for a second chapter.

Enjoy.

Magnus finishes taking inventory of his supplies and sits down at his desk. He starts making a list of things he needs to pick up tomorrow. He glances at Mikey. His son is sitting on the floor coloring. The brown, black and blue crayons are safe in his right hand as he colors with his left.

Magnus wonders how long Mikey will continue doing that. Magnus believes that his son's nightmares are the reason why he feels a need to keep his family safe and close at hand in 'crayon form'.

Mikey doesn't like talking about the nightmares. What little Alec was able to get out of him, was that he was in a strange place. Mikey gave him a vague description of the place. It wasn't the loft or the Institute. It wasn't even Emil's house or Valentine's warehouse. Alec didn't recognize it. Magnus also was at a loss as to where Mikey could be.

Mikey looks up and smiles, "Hi, Poppa."

Magnus laughs, "Hello yourself, raspberry." Mikey giggles and returns to his coloring. Magnus' phone rings. He glances at the screen then rolls his eyes, Angus. He stands then walks out the room as he hits 'answer'.

Mikey watches his father leave the room. He quickly gets to his feet, holding the three crayons close.

Magnus returns after a few minutes, shaking his head as he puts his phone in his back pocket. Mikey asks, "Daddy okay?"

Magnus smiles, "It wasn't about Daddy. It's a warlock. I have to go help him."

"Me go too?"

"It's probably best if you don't go." Magnus sighs, "And I can't leave you here by yourself."

Mikey smiles, "Daddy?"

Magnus nods, "Hopefully, he's not busy."

Mikey gently puts the three crayons in the box then covers it. He closes the coloring book. He holds the box and coloring book, close to his chest with his right arm and reaches for Magnus' hand with his left, "Ready."

Magnus opens a portal. They leave the loft then walk into Alec's office.

Alec is sitting at his desk reading a report. He looks up, "Visitors."

Mikey giggles as he drops the box and coloring book on the floor, then runs to his father, "Hello, Daddy."

Alec picks him up and sits Mikey on his lap, "Hello, raspberry." He raises an eyebrow as he looks at Magnus, "Trouble?"

Magnus sighs, "Agnus..."

Alec holds up a hand, "Say no more."

"It may be a while."

"It's fine."

Magnus walks over and kisses the top of Mikey's head, "Love you."

Mikey giggles, "Love you, Poppa."

Magnus kisses Alec, "Love you."

Alec laughs, "It's a good thing you told me."

Mikey giggles, "Daddy silly."

Magnus nods, "That he is." Magnus opens a portal, waves goodbye to Mikey, and leaves the office.

Alec kisses Mikey's nose, "I am not silly."

"Yes you are, Daddy."

"Whatever, Mikey."

"Whatever, Daddy."

Alec laughs, "Too much. Go color."

"Okay, Daddy." Mikey slides off his father's lap and walks over to where he dropped his stuff. He sits on the floor and opens the coloring book to the page he was working on in Magnus' office. He opens the crayon box and takes out the black, brown, and blue crayons. With them safe in his right hand, he takes an orange crayon out the box and resumes his coloring.

Alec smiles as he watches Mikey for a few minutes, then returns his attention to the report.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Out the corner of his eye, Alec notices Mikey pick his head up from his coloring and glance at the doorway. Mikey suddenly smiles as he throws the yellow crayon he was using in the box. He gently places the three crayons down on the coloring book then gets to his feet. He leaps over the coloring book and runs across the office.

Alec looks towards the door as Jace walks in. Jace laughs as Mikey runs into his arms. He swings his nephew around, "Hello Mikey."

Mikey giggles as he hugs Jace, "Hello Uncle Jace."

Alec laughs, "I'm glad you two know each other."

"Daddy silly."

"Mikey silly."

"Uh huh, you silly."

"I think not. You are the silly one."

Jace laughs, "I hate to butt in. It's lunch time, and I'm starving. I was going to ask if you wanted to go to the Italian place to eat, but I guess not."

Mikey shakes his head, "I stay with Daddy."

Alec raises an eyebrow, "I believe he was talking to me, raspberry."

"You sure?"

Jace laughs, "Yes, I was talking to your father."

"Blah on you."

Jace laughs as he puts Mikey back on his feet. Alec shakes his head, "Too much. You can get us a sausage and peppers hero and a small penne with marinara sauce."

Mikey nods, "That sounds good."

"I'm glad you approve, raspberry."

Mikey walks back to his coloring book, "Daddy silly." He sits down, picks up the three crayons, takes a red crayon out of the box and resumes coloring.

Alec shakes his head, "Too much."

Jace laughs, "Be back." He leaves the office.

Alec finishes the report he was reading and reaches for his laptop. He starts checking the patrol rosters for the coming week.

Alec sees, out the corner of his eye, Mikey stand up, then walk around the coloring book.

Alec glances at the doorway as Cecil Goldwater, a transfer from the Delaware Institute, walks in. Mikey walks over to the right hand chair in front of Alec's desk. His hands are by his sides, as he watches Cecil.

Alec sits back in his chair, "Yes Cecil?"

Cecil glances at Mikey then smiles too brightly at Alec, "Sir, I would like a new instructor for basic training."

"Are you having a problem with Izzy?"

"Not a problem, it's more like she's a girl and I would be more comfortable training with a guy."

"Well you can't pick the sex of the demons you will encounter."

Cecil laughs, "That's funny. If I may, I would like you to train me." He takes two steps towards the desk. Cecil stops as Mikey raises his right hand.

Alec glances quickly at his son, then looks back at Cecil, "I'm not a trainer. I'll see if there are any male instructors available."

"But you're not doing anything now, we can do a little hand to hand."

Alec raises an eyebrow, "I said 'no'."

"But sir, it would be most beneficial to me."

"Beneficial?"

"Yes, sir."

"No."

Cecil glares at a quiet Mikey coldly looking at him, "Sir, this warlock?"

"My son seems to have a problem with you and I'm starting to see why."

"This warlock is your son?"

Alec coldly says, "Cecil, you're dismissed. We'll discuss this at a later time."

"But sir."

Jace walks into the office, holding a take out bag. He stops when he sees Cecil. He glances at a silent, but ready for attack, Mikey then looks at Alec, "What's going on?"

Alec takes a deep breath, "I'll tell you later. Cecil, we are done here."

Cecil glances from Jace to Mikey, then back at Alec, "But sir..."

Jace nods, "Goldwater, he told you to go, don't make me throw you out."

Cecil nods, "Fine." He pushes past Jace as he leaves the office.

Mikey lowers his hand as he glares at Cecil's retreating back. Once Cecil is gone, Mikey smiles at his uncle, "I'm hungry."

Jace laughs as he puts the bag on the desk, "Okay boss."

Mikey giggles, "I'm not boss. Poppa is boss."

Alec stands and walks around his desk. He picks Mikey up, "Poppa's not here." He sits Mikey in the right hand chair then moves it closer to the desk as Jace starts removing food from the bag.

Mikey nods, "So Daddy is boss."

"Thank you, raspberry." Alec kisses the top of Mikey's head then goes to the cabinet and takes out plates and cutlery.

"You're welcome, Daddy."

Alec returns to the desk and hands a plate and fork to Jace. He unwraps the sausage and peppers hero and raises an eyebrow, "You going to be able to bite this, raspberry?"

Mikey opens his mouth as wide as it will go then shakes his head, "Uh huh, Daddy." Jace laughs as he sits in the other chair. Mikey closes his mouth and looks at his uncle, "You laughing at me?"

Jace shakes his head, "No boss." Mikey giggles.

Alec cuts a third of the hero then opens it up on a plate, "Better?" He hands Mikey a fork.

Mikey nods, "Yes, Daddy."

Alec spoons some penne on the plate, "This should keep you busy." He kisses the top of Mikey's head, "Eat up." He puts the rest of the hero and penne by his closed laptop and starts walking to his chair.

Mikey smiles around a mouthful of food, "Thank you, Daddy."

Jace checks the bag then looks at Alec, "Napkins?"

Alec stops and walks to the cabinet, "Yes, certain people literally feed their face." He grabs a bunch of napkins and walks back to his desk.

He looks at Mikey and shakes his head. His son giggles, "What?" Mikey already has sauce on the tip of his nose. Alec wipes Mikey's nose then walks to his chair and sits down. He puts the napkins on the center of the desk. Jace grabs a few.

"Nothing, just eat." Alec moves the laptop to the side. He puts some penne on a plate and unwraps the remainder of the hero.

"Okay, Daddy."

They eat in silence for a few minutes. Jace glances over at Mikey. The youngster has the fork in his left hand and a piece of roll in his right. He's using the roll to push food onto his fork. Jace looks at Alec, "So what was Cecil doing here?"

Alec sighs, "He doesn't want a female instructor."

"That's ridiculous."

Alec glances quickly at Mikey then nods, "It was more about him wanting me as his trainer."

"You?"

"Izzy has mentioned that he's asked quite a few personal questions about me."

"So, he came up here to persuade you to be his trainer? He does know that you're the Head of the Institute and have more important things to do."

Alec shrugs, "Guess not. He was getting a bit aggressive."

Jace glances at Mikey, "That's why somebody was in protect mode."

Alec smiles, "It doesn't take much for that to happen."

Jace laughs, "I know that on a personal level."

Mikey looks up from his plate, "Know what, Uncle Jace?"

Alec sighs, "By the angel Mikey, how did you get sauce on your forehead?"

Mikey giggles, "I don't know, Daddy."

Jace laughs as he wipes Mikey's face with a napkin, "He has many talents, Alec."

Alec nods, "That he does." He notices that Mikey's plate is almost empty, "You want more penne, raspberry?"

Mikey nods, "Please."

Alec spoons the remaining pasta onto his son's plate, "Enjoy."

"Thank you, Daddy." Mikey returns to eating.

Jace raises an eyebrow, "Nice change of subject."

Alec smiles, "I have many talents as well."

"What about Goldwater?"

Alec sits back in his chair, "The Head of the Delaware Institute wasn't too open about why he was transferred here. Just something about a 'change in scenery'."

"That doesn't sound good."

"No, it doesn't. If he's going to be a problem, he will have to go."

"He already met the apprentice, he doesn't want to meet the boss."

Mikey puts his fork on his empty plate, "Boss Poppa."

Jace nods, "Exactly."

Alec smiles, "Yes, that won't be pretty."

Mikey looks from Alec to Jace, "Poppa is beautiful."

Alec laughs, "Yes he is." He shakes his head as he stands up. He walks around the desk, "Mikey, let's get you cleaned up." He walks into the bathroom and returns with a wet washcloth. He kneels down and wipes Mikey's face and hands, "You believe in getting into your food, don't you?" Mikey giggles.

Jace stands and puts their trash in the take out bag.

Once Mikey is clean, Alec kisses his nose then lifts him from the chair and sets him on his feet, "Back to coloring, young man."

Mikey giggles, "Okay, Daddy." He runs to his coloring book and sits on the floor. With the three crayons safe in his right hand, his left grabs a green crayon from the box and he starts coloring.

Jace smiles, "I'll get rid of our garbage then ask around about Goldwater."

Alec nods, "Okay." Jace leaves the office. Alec returns the washcloth to the bathroom then goes back to his desk. He sits down and opens his laptop.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Alec looks up from the screen as Mikey stands and walks over to the sofa, "You okay, raspberry?"

Mikey nods as he lays on the sofa, "Naptime, Daddy."

"Oh." Alec stands and walks to the sofa, "You want a blanket or a pillow?"

"No, Daddy."

Alec kisses Mikey's head, "Sleep tight." Mikey nods as his eyes close. Alec smiles as he watches Mikey for a few minutes, then returns to his desk.

He sits down and looks over at his son. Mikey looks small and vulnerable on a sofa that takes up most of the back wall. Alec smiles, 'vulnerable' is not a word he would use to describe his son when he's awake. After watching Mikey for a few minutes, Alec returns his attention to his laptop.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Movement out the corner of his eye, has Alec looking at the sofa. Mikey is walking around his coloring book, his purple eyes are narrow. Alec watches as Mikey once again stands by the right hand chair and glares at the doorway.

Alec continues to look at his son until he hears his name. He looks at the doorway and sees Cecil standing there grinning, "Finally got your attention."

Alec takes a deep breath, "Not now, Cecil."

Cecil leans against the door, "I know what's going on here."

"Oh you do."

"Yes, you want me."

Alec raises an eyebrow, "I what?"

"You want me."

Alec pinches the bridge of his nose, "No, that's not it."

Cecil takes two steps into the office. Mikey silently raises his right hand. Cecil glares at the youngster, "Warlock, go away."

Alec stands up, "No Cecil, you go away."

Cecil takes another step into the office, "Alexander Lightwood you will be mine."

Mikey throws a fireball that hits Cecil in the chest and sends him flying out of the office. His head hits the opposite wall with a sickening thud.

The elevator, at the other end of the hallway, opens and Jace steps out to see Cecil slam into the wall.

Cecil's head wound leaves a bloody trail as he slides down the wall. His ass lands on the floor then he tips over to the left. His dead eyes stare at Jace as he walks closer.

A portal opens in the office and Magnus steps out. He sees Alec running out the office to Cecil laying on the floor in the hallway.

Jace tells Alec, "I texted Izzy to come up with a team."

Magnus asks, "What did I miss?"

Mikey lowers his hand and smiles, "Hello Poppa." He runs to his father.

Magnus smiles, he didn't notice his son standing by the chairs. He picks Mikey up.

Jace walks into the office, "Magnus, you made your point."

Magnus looks at him, "What?"

Alec returns to the office, "Magnus just got here."

Jace glances at Mikey, who is resting his head on Magnus' shoulder and smiling at his uncle, "Apprentice?"

Alec nods, "Yes."

Jace walks over and kisses Mikey's cheek, "Not messing with you."

Mikey giggles, "Silly Uncle Jace."

Magnus sighs, "I'll ask again, what did I miss?"

Mikey lifts his head, "Bad man hurt Daddy. Bad man dead."

"Hurt Daddy?" Magnus looks at Alec with worried eyes.

Alec shakes his head, "I'm fine."

Jace nods, "Yes, Mikey had Cecil under control earlier."

Magnus takes a deep breath, "Earlier? So this was an ongoing thing?"

Mikey nods, "Bad man bother Daddy all day."

"All day?"

Alec sighs, "Mikey shh. It wasn't all day, it was only twice."

Mikey puts his head back on Magnus' shoulder, "Daddy shh. Naptime." He closes his eyes.

Magnus looks from his son to his husband, "But..."

Alec kisses him, "I'm fine. Do you really think Mikey would let anyone get close enough to harm me?"

Mikey opens his eyes, "Silly Poppa."

Magnus kisses Mikey's nose, "Hush you." Mikey giggles and closes his eyes. Magnus smiles at Alec, "No."

Alec nods, "Okay then." He kisses Magnus, "You worry too much."

Izzy walks in, "Damn Magnus."

Jace laughs, "Apprentice."

"Oh. My apologies. Damn Mikey." Her nephew giggles.

Magnus glances at his son, "I thought it was naptime."

Mikey giggles, "Poppa shh."

"Well, I will want details Alexander, but for now, I'll take Mikey home." He flicks a hand and the coloring book and crayons disappear.

Alec sighs, "Magnus, it's not that serious."

"Right, you get attacked in your office and it's 'not that serious'."

"Magnus..."

Mikey giggles, "Daddy in trouble."

"I am not in trouble, raspberry."

"Uh huh. Boss Poppa."

Alec rolls his eyes as Magnus chuckles. Alec kisses Mikey's forehead, "Shh." Alec kisses Magnus, "Fine, we'll talk later."

Magnus nods, "Count on it." He opens a portal and leaves the office.

Alec joins Izzy and Jace in the hallway. Cecil's body has been placed on a gurney. Leroy looks at Izzy, "Ready when you are."

Izzy nods, "Okay." She looks at Alec, "How are we writing this up?"

Alec folds his arms across his chest, "He pissed off the wrong warlock."

Jace laughs, "You really want to put that in the report?"

Alec sighs, "Good point. The less the Clave knows about Mikey, the better. Say Magnus did it. Not the first Shadowhunter that Magnus has killed."

"I'm sure Magnus won't complain."

"Exactly. Especially since it keeps Mikey off the Clave's radar."

Izzy nods, "Done." She nods at Leroy, "Let's go."

He pushes the gurney towards the elevator. Izzy kisses Alec's cheek then she and Jace follow Leroy as Alec walks back into his office.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Magnus steps out the portal into the loft. Mikey looks around, "Maxine?"

Magnus walks over to the sofa, "She'll be home soon." He sits down with Mikey on his lap, "Did the bad man hurt Daddy?"

Mikey shakes his head, "No, Poppa. I keep Daddy safe."

Magnus relaxes, not that he doubted Alec but he wanted confirmation. He kisses Mikey's forehead, "Thank you."

"Bad man no hurt Daddy or Poppa or Maxine or Max or Not Daddy or Not Poppa or Aunt Clary or Aunt Izzy or Uncle Jace."

Magnus raises an eyebrow, "All those people?"

Mikey nods, "All those people, Poppa."

Magnus hugs his son, "And all those people will keep you safe." Mikey smiles. Magnus asks, "Is there a bad man in your bad dreams?"

Mikey's eyes lower. He turns away from Magnus, "No Poppa." He tries to get off Magnus' lap, but his father's arms hold him tight.

"It's okay, raspberry. Everyone has bad dreams."

Mikey looks at his father, "Even you?"

"Yes, also Daddy and Maxine."

"Max?"

"Yes, and Not Daddy and Not Poppa." Magnus doesn't like the lost look in his powerful son's eyes.

"I don't like bad dreams."

"Nobody does, but they can be helpful at times."

Mikey shakes his head, "Bad dreams are bad."

"Not always. Max had a bad dream about your Daddy."

Mikey's eyes widen, "He did?"

"Yes. When I first visited his world, he told me about it. He had been having it for a while. Although, he originally thought it was about Not Daddy. But turned out it was about your Daddy."

"What happened to Daddy?"

Magnus sighs, "He was ... hurt." The lamp on the other side of the sofa explodes.

Mikey's eyes are cold, "Someone hurt my Daddy?"

Magnus glances at the pieces of lamp on the floor then at his son, "Yes, but Aunt Izzy and I kept him safe." He flicks a hand and the lamp is restored.

"Bad man dead?"

"Yes. Max, Not Daddy and Not Poppa killed the bad man."

"Good. What about Maxine?"

Magnus smiles, "She was in school. This happened a few years ago."

"Oh."

Magnus kisses Mikey's nose, "Now tell me about the bad man in your dream."

Mikey whispers, "No bad man. No Daddy. No Poppa. No Maxine. Just me."

"You were all alone in this house?"

"Yes."

Magnus takes a deep breath, "Okay. Then it's as I explained to Maxine last night, your bad dreams are about being alone."

"I don't like being alone."

"Nobody does, Mikey. You now have a family that loves you, so deep down, you're afraid of losing us."

Mikey nods, "That true, Poppa."

Magnus smiles and holds his son's face in his hands, "Then you have nothing to worry about. We aren't going anywhere." He kisses Mikey's forehead.

Mikey hugs his father, "Awesome, Poppa."

"It truly is." Mikey rests his head against Magnus' chest, "Naptime, raspberry?"

Mikey yawns, "Yes."

"Okay."

Magnus holds Mikey as he thinks how 'lucky' it was that Agnus needed help today. Of course, he has no doubt that Alec would have been able to deal with Sidney? Sean? Magnus can't remember what Jace said his name was, but knowing that Mikey was there to keep his father safe puts Magnus' mind at ease.

Magnus smiles down at Mikey, once again he was in the right place at the right time. Mikey kisses the red mark on top of his son's head.

A portal opens by the kitchen table and Maxine steps into the loft. She smiles at her father, "Hi Poppa."

"Maxine, how was school?"

"The usual." She runs into her room and drops her bookbag near a bookcase. She runs over to the sofa and sits down, "Why is Mikey on your lap?"

"We had a busy day."

"Oh?"

"Yes, Agnus needed my assistance."

Maxine rolls her eyes, "Again Poppa? He is a horrible warlock."

Magnus laughs, "That he is. Anyway, I had to take Mikey over to Daddy while I dealt with Agnus."

Maxine giggles, "Mikey must have loved that."

"I believe he did. Now he's taking a well deserved nap."

"You want me to take him?"

"I would appreciate that. My legs are falling asleep."

Maxine giggles as she gently takes Mikey in her arms. He opens his eyes and looks up at her, "Hi Maxine."

She kisses his nose, "Hi Mikey." He snuggles against her as she stands up. He closes his eyes as she walks to her bedroom.

Magnus stands and stretches.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Magnus and Alec are laying in bed, holding hands. Maxine and Mikey are in their beds and the loft is secured for the night. Magnus didn't bring up the subject during dinner, because he didn't want to upset Maxine. She doesn't need to know that a Shadowhunter had threatened her father in the Institute.

Magnus stares at the ceiling as his thumb runs across Alec's knuckles, 'So, what happened?"

"When?"

Magnus rolls his eyes, "Really, Alexander?"

Alec chuckles, "Oh, you mean with Cecil?"

"What kind of name is that for a Shadowhunter?"

"Cecil Goldwater."

Magnus snorts, "That's a terrible name."

"Terrible Shadowhunter."

"And now he's dead."

"Yep."

Magnus takes a deep breath, 'What did he do?"

"Nothing. Just a lot of talk."

Magnus relaxes, "Because Mikey was there?"

Alec thinks about it for a few minutes, then shrugs, "Maybe. I was behind my desk, so it's possible that if he had actually tried something, I had time to reach for my seraph blade."

Magnus sits up, "What?"

Alec sits up and kisses him, "I was in no danger, Mikey kept things from escalating."

"But Mikey still saw reason to attack."

Alec shrugs, "We both know that Mikey has a low threshold when it comes to what he considers a 'threat'."

Magnus nods as he relaxes against the pillows, "True. Especially threats against you. I saw that last night."

Alec smiles, "Mikey can definitely give my former Protector lessons in protecting."

Magnus sniffs, "I got a promotion, so I don't need any lessons."

Alec laughs, "Good point." He leans against the pillows, "I had Izzy put that you killed Cecil in her report."

Magnus nods, "I'm fine with that."

"It's scary to think of what would have happened if Emil had grabbed another Shadowhunter. Would Mikey still have helped him? What if Emil decided to just walk into the Institute with Mikey. No way would we have been able to defend ourselves against him."

Magnus squeezes Alec's hand, "Mistress Destiny knew what she was doing when she steered those idiots in your direction." Magnus suddenly laughs.

"What's so funny?"

"She did the same this morning. Agnus just happens to need me on the same day that Cecil tries to make a move on you?"

"Coincidence?"

"Maybe, Alexander, maybe."

They stop talking when they hear soft footsteps going past their door. Alec gets out the bed and walks over to the door. He sees Mikey walk into Maxine's room. Alec walks over and smiles as he watches Mikey climb onto his sister's bed.

Maxine opens her eyes, smiles at Mikey then whispers something in his ear. Mikey looks at the door and giggles. He waves at his father then snuggles against Maxine. Alec smiles as he watches his children fall back asleep in each other's arms.

He senses Magnus at his side. His husband whispers, "Everything okay?"

Alec nods, "Guess Mikey wanted a change of scenery."

Magnus chuckles softly, "Or maybe he spent enough time with you today, tonight he wants to spend with Maxine."

"True."

Magnus holds Alec's hand, "Let's go to sleep."

Alec nods, "Let's." Hand in hand they return to their bedroom.

-the end-

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've said it many times, but one of the joys of having multiple worlds is killing the same bad guys over and over again. I've lost track of how many times I've killed the trifecta of Raj-Robert-Aldertree.

Cecil first appeared in the standalone Magnus Doesn't Share. He showed up in the Rune World in Warlock Fever: Take Two.

The scene of him appearing in Alec's office and Mikey taking care of him was the starting point that I built this entire chapter around.
