Sydney to the Max Season 4: Episode 1 - High School Improvement
Written By: "Fun But Shy Girl", With: DrDoom2006, Based on Characters Created by: Mark Reism
Sydney Reynolds walked into the doors of her brand new high school, and took a deep breath as she said, "Okay Reynolds. Time to take on the brand new world known as high school." Then Sydney heard a familiar voice yell, "Sydney!" Sydney turned her head and saw her best friend Olive running towards her. Sydney hugged Olive and said, "Olive. Oh my gosh. I missed you so much girl." Then Olive said, "Me too. Oh my gosh. Can you believe it!? We're finally in high school now. The land of homecoming and proms..." Then suddenly Sydney and Olive saw several boys walk by with facial hair. Then Sydney looking confused and amazed said, "And the land of hairy giants. I can't tell if those are students or teachers." Then Olive said, "I know. Emmy asked me a few minutes ago if some guys we saw in the hall were NFL players. But anyway, how was summer camp?" Then Sydney said, "Amazing. I learned so many amazing new ways to write and play music. Sorry I was gone even longer this summer though." Then Olive said, "It's okay. Spending the summer with Emmy and her family in the Philippines was amazing. Emmy's grandparents are so nice, and the mission work we got to do for less fortunate children there was life changing."
Then from nearby, Emmy ran over to the two and said, "Olive, you forgot to pack your snack. Oh, hey Sydney. Good to see ya." Sydney gave Emmy a quick hug and said, "Good to see you too. Wait. You're packing Olive's snacks for her?" Then Olive said, "Yeah. This summer Emmy taught me how to loosen up a bit and have a tasty treat every now and then." Then Emmy said, "Yeah, and when we had some down time: Olive helped tutor me and really improved my math skills. I am going to dominate Advanced Algebra this year." Then Olive said, "Emmy, in ninth grade we take Geometry. Advanced Algebra is next year." Then Emmy keeping a straight face said, "I am going to dominate Advanced Algebra next year." Then from nearby, Sophia ran over to the three and said, "Oh my gosh. I finally found you all. Good news. I just found out the most important information we need to know." Then Sydney said, "What would that be? Where all are classrooms are located?" Sophia with a confused look said, "No. Why would I care about that on the first day? No, I just found our when our first High School Homecoming dance is. In three Fridays from now." Then Olive said, "Oh my gosh. That's so soon." Then Emmy looking a bit thrown off said, "Yeah. I mean... that leaves so little time to decide who you'll go with, along with... announcing who you'll go with."
Then Sophia looked far away and smiled as she said, "Well I think I know who Sydney is going to go with." Sydney looking confused said, "What do you mean?" Sophia then pointed behind Sydney. Sydney then turned her head and saw walking into the high school was her old friend Harry. Sydney's eyes widened, as she looked stunned for a moment and said, "Harry?" Then Harry saw Sydney and said, "Sydney! Hey!" Sydney and Harry then walked over to each other and gave one another a quick hug as Sydney said, "Oh my gosh. Harry. What are you doing here?" Harry then said, "I go to this school now. My private school I went to stops at 8th grade, and my parents decided I should come here." Sydney looked slightly caught off guard and said, "Wow Harry. That's just... wow." Then Harry said, "Yeah, and some of my new friends I made at Portland Prep are here too. I was wondering if you and the Amigas wanted to have lunch with us today." Then Sydney looking slightly more happy now said, "You made new friends. I'm happy for you Harry."
Then Harry said, "Thanks. Although... I have been hoping that us being in the same school would mean that..." Then Sydney heard a familiar adult voice yell, "Sydney!" Then Sydney turned her head and looked horrified as she said, "Oh God, no." Then Sydney saw her father Max walk into the high school as he said, "Hey. You forgot your lunch. Don't want to start your first day of high school with an unbalanced meal." As Max handed Sydney a lunch bag, Sydney said, "Thank you dad. Now please leave. We don't want to recreate my first day of seventh grade again." Then Max said, "Okay, okay. I'm about to leave and... Oh, hey Harry. You go here too now?" Harry smiled and said, "Hey Mr. Reynolds. And yes I do." Then Max looked around and said, "Gosh. It feels like just yesterday when I was stepping into this school for the first time..."
1994:
Young Max Reynolds and his best friend Leo walked into their brand new high school as Max said, "Aw yeah Leo. High School. This is gonna be the best years of our lives." Then the two saw several large male students with muscles and tattoos walk by them. A surprised looking Leo then said, "Are we in high school or a prison yard?" Then one of the large male students glanced at Max and Leo as he said, "Hey. I'm only on parole okay." Leo now looked a bit freaked out as Max said, "That doesn't matter. The point is high school is a new beginning for us. This is going to be my first school year where me and Alisha are gonna be boyfriend and girlfriend." Then Leo looking skeptical said, "Are you sure about that Max? I mean you haven't seen Alisha for the last two months. I mean I know you both admitted that you each had a crush on each other a week before she went to camp, but did she agree to being your actual girlfriend?" Then Max said, "Leo, she kissed me. Of course she wants to be my girlfriend now." Then Leo said, "Well lets be more specific. She kissed you on the cheek and hugged you. She does that with everyone in our family. Look, just make sure you talk through with her where you both feel your relationship actually is." Then Max said, "Don't worry Leo. Me and Alisha are gonna have plenty of time to talk together this year. We are going to be spending the next four years talking nonstop to each other, while blissfully sneaking looks at each other in all of the classes we're gonna take together."
Then suddenly Alisha walked over to Max from nearby and said, "Hey Max. Looks like I'm going to be in a whole bunch of different classes than you this year." Max looked extremely surprised and shocked as he said, "What!?" Then Alisha said, "Yeah. I scored really high on this placement test I took this summer, so they actually have me in mostly tenth grade level classes. This is so amazing. Look at these awesome classes I'm taking already." Then Alisha held a piece of paper out that had her schedule as Max and Leo looked at it. Then Leo said, "Well, that is pretty impressive. Half these courses I've never heard of." Then Alisha said, "Yeah. But I'm staying in regular Ninth Grade Gym since all freshmen must take that, and Ninth Grade Science Class since I still need to improve in Chemistry; so we can all at least be in those classes together. See ya then guys." Then Alisha walked off as Max took a deep breath and said, "Okay. It's not a total loss. We can still hang out during gym class. My plan can still sort of work." Then Leo said, "Yeah, well we all know what eventually becomes of your plans that you think will sort of work, but lets just see how this plays out."
THE PRESENT DAY:
Sydney was sitting at a table in her father's bike shop looking through some books as Olive, Emmy, and Sophia stepped into the bike shop and saw Sydney. The three girls sat near Sydney as Emmy said, "Wow. You're really studying hard. Did you get homework I didn't?" Sydney made a small smile and said, "No. I just wanted to look ahead a bit in all my books... and I kind of wanted to avoid going home." Olive looking confused said, "Why is that?" Sydney sighed and said, "Because I kind of told Harry that's where I'd be, but if he shows up there, I'd rather not be home." Then Sophia said, "Is everything okay between you two?" Sydney sighed and said, "Yeah. But... it was easier when the two of us were going to different schools and put our relationship on hold. Now we're in the same school, and... I don't know what's supposed to happen next. It's kind of scary. I mean we're in high school now, and everything is changing and I know me and Harry seemed perfect for each other in middle school, but what if in high school... everything just falls apart?!"
Then from nearby Max walked over to the four girls with four smoothies as he said, "Hey girls. Saw you come in and figured you'd like some smoothies. So how was the first day of high school?" Sydney then looked at her dad as she said, "Dad, I'm a hot mess when it comes to my feelings. Why do feelings have to feel so feely when you feel them?" Max smirked and said, "Harry suddenly showing up at your school got your head spinning?" Then Sydney put her two hands on her head as she said, "We're talking ninth birthday party on tea cup ride incident spinning." Then Max said, "Well Sydney. All I can say is if you don't do anything, nothing will happen. But if you don't try to explore what you're feeling, you could be missing out on something amazing. Take me deciding to franchise this place and build a second store. Something bad could come from it, but Sophia's mom helped me realize the amazing benefits that could come from it."
Then suddenly Sophia's mother Angela stepped into the bike shop as Max said, "Speaking of which. Hey Angela." Angela walked over to Max and said, "Hey Max. Hey girls." Sophia waved and said, "Hey mom." Then Angela looked right at Max as she said, "Good news Max. I got the deal finalized. Within one month, we are definitely have a second branch of Reynolds Rides open down town." Max looking excited said, "Oh my gosh. Angela, this is amazing. Thank you so much." Then Angela said, "Well as fulfilling as my law practice is, I must say it's been highly enjoyable to help be your partner in this second store. Whenever I see how safe and happy my daughter is hanging out with her friends here, it just wanted me to make another location like it." Then Max said, "Well how about I get you a smoothie on the house." Angela smiled as she said, "I'd like that." Max and Angela then walked over to the smoothie counter, as Olive turned her head and looked out the nearby window and said, "Hmm. Uh... Syd."
Sydney then looked at Olive as she said, "What is it Olive?" Then Olive said, "It's Harry... with another girl." Sydney then looked out the nearby window and saw Harry sitting on a nearby bench talking with another girl. Harry then held up a flier for the high school homecoming near the girl, as Sophia said, "Well clearly they're talking about high school homecoming. You think he's asking her to go with him?" Then Sydney said, "I don't know. I mean... I haven't made it easy for Harry to ask me today. I guess this is what happens when you let your feelings make you all nervous. Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom and just... cry or something in there." Sydney then got up and walked away. Sophia then got up and followed Sydney as she said, "Sydney. Wait. Maybe it's not that bad." As Sydney and Sophia walked away, Emmy looked at Olive as she said, "Wow. It looks who goes out with who really complicates life in high school." Olive sighed and said, "Yeah. I guess it does." Olive and Emmy then began to both look nervous as they sat quietly at the table together.
1994:
Max was running on a track around the high school football field outside as he was panting and sweating. From behind, Alisha ran up to Max and said, "Hey Max. How you doing?" As Max panted a bit he said, "Fine. All good." Then Alisha said, "Cool. Well, I'm gonna run ahead. See ya." Then Alisha ran off. Then from behind, Leo ran up to Max and said, "So, I see you've been unsuccessful at finding time to enjoy with Alisha so far." Then Max said, "It's a work in progress. But before that, I gotta figure out... how do they expect us to run two laps in one class?" Then Leo said, "Max, we're expected to run two miles, which means we actually have to run eight laps." Then Max's eyes got huge as he yelled, "Eight!?" Then Max fell down and fainted on the ground."
PRESENT DAY:
Sydney, Olive, and Emmy walked into the bike shop as Sydney said, "So when I asked Harry if we could talk today, he just said he'd find me later. But how long is later? Later is feeling way too late now." Then as the three girls sat down Olive said, "I'm sorry Syd." Then Sydney said, "I just feels more and more likely now I'm not going to Homecoming with Harry. Ugh. I probably won't even go at all. How about you two? You both going?" Olive and Emmy suddenly looked nervous as Emmy said, "What? You mean you think we're going to Homecoming together?" As Olive began to sweat she said, "Why would you think that?" Then Sydney looking confused said, "What? No. I just meant are you going at all?" Then Olive and Emmy both breathed a sigh of relief as Olive said, "We're still considering things."
Then Max walked over to the three girls and said, "Hey girls. How's the first week of high school going?" Then Sydney said, "Dad, is there anyway to make high school relationships less complicated and crazy?" Then Max said, "Well unfortunately, science hasn't uncovered that secret yet." Then from the nearby door, Sophia and her mom Angela walked in. Max immediately smiled as he said, "Hey Angela. What brings you by?" Then Angela said, "Well I wanted to discuss plans for the new shop with you, while maybe having a late lunch together." Max smiled as he said, "I haven't eaten yet, so that sounds good to me. Lets head to my office." Then Max and Angela walked away as Sophia sat with the other girls and said, "Listen Sydney. I'm sorry I pried, but I had to." Sydney looking confused said, "What do you mean?" Then Sophia said, "I saw Harry outside the school this afternoon, and... well look." Sophia held her phone up, and then Sydney saw on Sophia's phone a picture of Harry and the girl he was with from before holding a pearl necklace together. Sydney suddenly looked sad as she said, "Looks like Harry had time to get that girl a nice necklace... but no time to ask me to Homecoming." Tears appeared in Sydney's eyes as Olive gave Sydney a sympathetic side hug.
1994:
Max, Alisha, and many other high school students sat in a science class as the teacher looking at them said, "Okay. Now it's time to pair off into lab partners. Now the partners you choose will be paired to you all semester long, so choose wisely." Then a boy sitting next to Alisha said, "Hey. Wanna be lab partners?" Then Max looking frantic ran over to Alisha and said, "Hey Alisha. We're friends Alisha, so lets be partners Alisha. Wouldn't that be a great idea Alisha?" Then Alisha looked at Max as she said, "I guess, but would it hurt to pair up with new friends?" Then Max said, "But you know me Alisha, and you know we're friends, but you don't know who this guy here is. For all you know he's a secret undercover agent from an enemy country gathering intel on how the American public education system works." Then the boy next to Alisha said, "Hey. I'm not a secret undercover agent... well not anymore." Then Alisha looked at Max confused as she said, "Max, why do you desperately want to be my lab partner? What am I not understanding here?" Then Max looking frantic said, "What you don't understand Alisha is that you're my girlfriend, and that the only boy you should be hanging out with at school is me!" Alisha suddenly froze and looked shocked, as several students nearby began to stare. Max then stood still as he waited for Alisha to respond. Then Alisha finally opened her mouth and said, "Max... lets talk in the hallway after class."
PRESENT DAY:
Harry was sitting on a bench outside near the school as Sydney approached him. Sydney then said, "Hey Harry." Harry smiled as he said, "Sydney, hey. Listen, I want to say..." Then as Sydney sat next to Harry she said, "No. Let me speak first. Look... I like you Harry... a lot... but we're both growing up and becoming new people in high school, and the you I like, I realize now might not be the new you you're becoming and..." Harry then said, "Sydney, is this because I haven't asked you to Homecoming?" Sydney nodded her head and said, "Yeah. It's been making me really nervous, especially after I saw you talking with another girl, and Sophia saw you giving her a necklace." Harry then chuckled a bit and said, "Sydney, that girl is a friend of mine from Portland Prep. Her name is Stacy, and she was really my only female friend at Portland Prep. I wanted to talk to her because I was feeling nervous too... about asking you to Homecoming." Sydney looked surprised as she said, "Wait. what?"
Then Harry said, "You see I was talking to her a lot recently because I was asking her for some advice. And after telling her about you, she convinced me to give her some money, so she could help me find the best necklace for you to wear at Homecoming." Sydney looking slightly excited now said, "Wait. You mean..." Then Harry took out of his pocket a necklace and handed it to Sydney as he said, "Sydney, I really like you. And... you make me want to be a better man, because... my girlfriend only deserves the best guy out there." Sydney then looked more excited as she said, "Wait. Did you say girlfriend?" Then Harry said, "Well... I'll only call you that if you want me to." Then Sydney leaned her face towards Harry's and then... Sydney kissed Harry right on the lips. Then after a moment, Sydney moved her face from Harry and smiled as she said, "I do."
1994:
Max stood in the corner of the school hallway by himself and watched as Alisha from nearby approached him. Max looking nervous said, "Listen Alisha, I'm sorry I said what I said to you right in the middle of class. It wasn't polite." Alisha with a straight face said, "It wasn't." Then Max with a little optimism in his voice said, "So... we cool now my amazing girlfriend?" Then Alisha with a stern look said, "Max, I am not your girlfriend!" Max suddenly looked devastated as he said, "Wait... we're breaking up?" Alisha looking more angry now said, "Max, we were never dating!" Then Max looking confused said, "But I said I had a crush on you, and you said you had a crush on me. You kissed me and we hugged." Alisha looking frustrated said, "Max, just because you have a crush on someone, doesn't mean you're ready to date them. When the school year started, I was hoping we could continue hanging out and we could get to know each other better and see where our feelings led us. But all I see is that despite us both being teenagers in high school now, you're still a little kid deep inside that's possessive and jumps to conclusions, and I do not want someone like that to be my boyfriend!" Then Max stepped forward and said, "Alisha, wait." Then Alisha stepped away from Max and said, "Max. Just... I need some space. Okay?" Then Alisha turned around and walked away, while Max stood completely still, with only one tear moving down his left cheek.
PRESENT DAY:
Max and Angela were walking by a lake in the late afternoon as Angela said, "Mmm. Smell the early Autumn air. It feels wonderful." Max smiled and said, "It certainly does. So... did you get any info from Sophia on how Sydney was doing at school today?" Then Angela said, "Max, using our kids to spy on each other is completely unethical... and Sophia told me she saw Sydney and Harry on a bench together kissing." Max smiled and said, "Young love. Sometimes it can be painful, but sometimes... it can be quite magical." Then Angela said, "Well you should know that considering you married your high school sweetheart." Then Max said, "Well it wasn't quite as magical as you'd think. Not long after me and Sydney's mother both told the other we had a crush on each other, we had an argument, and well... we didn't talk to each other for quite some time. It took quite awhile for me to get over it, and it was a very long journey full of a lot of drama before we both even considered being a couple again... But enough about my past. How about yours? Was high school romance painful or magical for you?"
Angela sighed and said, "Kind of both. Sophia's father was the first person I ever dated too; although it all started during senior year for us. However we got married a year later, with Sophia's older brother being born the same year. The... divorce was very hard on me. However the real pain comes from that I wish I had fully understood what marriage was before I got married." Max looking sympathetic said, "Angela, we don't have to talk about it if you don't want." Angela then said, "No, it's okay. I've spent a lot of time in therapy, and I've made peace with the mistakes I made in my past. However what really makes me nervous is my future. I mean I haven't dated a new person since high school. I feel like if I start dating someone now I'd feel so inexperienced and confused." Then Max said, "I know. It's been so hard for me to get back in the dating game, I don't even know how to make the first move anymore." Then Angela looked right at Max as she said, "Well... maybe the first move just needs to be... as easy as this." Then Angela moved her face forward... and kissed Max on the lips. Max kissed Angela back, and then after a moment the two moved their faces back. Angela then suddenly looked nervous as she said, "I... I'm sorry. I... I need to go." Then Angela quickly walked away leaving Max standing alone and looking confused.
Then as Max and Angela slowly began to walk in separate directions, they didn't notice closer to the lake was Olive and Emmy both sitting together as they looked at the lake while preparing to eat some food they had in a bag. As Emmy took one of the sandwiches that Olive prepared and took a bite, she realized that Olive was glaring intently at her. Emmy's face began to blush as she said, "I... it was yours?" Olive giggled and said, "No... I was only feeling happy about us..." Still blushing, Emmy smiled back and said, "Olive... I was scared when we started this... you know... and I still am, but... we will have to tell Sophia and Sydney about us eventually..." Olive lowered her head, and said, "I know. But until then... lets just enjoy this moment together." Then Olive and Emmy leaned their heads towards one another... and kissed each other on the lips.
