Summary: "When his heart stopped being he stopped being Denny." George watching Alex pull his best friend off the hospital bed made his own heart want to stop beating.

"When I say 'I love you', I want to mean it. You have to give me time to mean it." Except I'm not sure I will ever mean it. George stared into his girlfriend's eyes and hoped he was showing her what she wanted to see. The kiss was something he was used to initiating, but not used to hating. All his life, George O' Malley had liked the girls he couldn't have, the ones that would never give him the time of day. He was used to it; it was part of his character. Girls had looked over him like he was the ant on the floor.

Not that this is any different, George thought as he kissed Callie, his short stature easily comparable as he held her against the wall. I'm thinking of him while kissing the girl that loves me. Loves me, and doesn't care that I'm scary and damaged. He looks past me in public just like Meredith and all the others always did.

"Nah, I wouldn't waste a decent girl on this." So where's O'Malley? Alex watched his ex-girlfriend smile and turn around, going towards the room that the man she loved now was in. Fucking corpse stole my girl. He sighed. Or maybe I only care because I don't like things taken from me. It's not like I really wanted her that much in the first place. I wanted her best friend, and I still can't admit it.

Alex Karev stepped onto the floor that the prom was being held on, eyes searching instantly for him. He spotted George dancing with Callie, his arm held up as she spun beneath it, hair flying out and smile radiating from her even to as far away as Alex was. The usual scowl on his face, Dr. Karev took a seat on one of the couches facing the dance floor, eyes on the grinning face of Dr. O' Malley.

It seemed like so long ago when this had all gotten started, when really it hadn't been that long at all. The on-call room was dark and humid, someone having left the window open a crack, rainy air floating inside the small space. Alex leaned back on the door, shutting it softly, silently. He pulled his scrub shirt over his head and tossed it in the corner of the bed, crawling in and pulling the blanket up over his body, head shifting on the pillow, searching for all the comfort it could find for the next two hours. His eyes closed gently, reviewing his work for the day, making sure he hadn't forgotten to do anything.

Just as he was drifting off to sleep, he felt an arm wrap around his middle, felt a warm body pressing up behind him. Instead of waking up, he just pulled them closer.

He snapped out of the memory as the brunette he'd been staring at looked his way. The two doctors' eyes met briefly, for only a second, but both felt their pulses quicken. Alex watched as George pulled Callie close and whispered something in her ear, then turned and started walking his way. The leaner man stood up quickly and started away, finding an empty examining room and closing the door behind him.

Hearing the soft knock, Alex stepped back and leaned against the counter, arms crossed. George entered, closing the door quietly and moving to where Alex stood, one hand twisting in the other, the two men's heads not even an inch from the other's.

"I didn't think you'd really show," George said softly, eyes slowly meeting Alex's.

"What does it matter, O'Malley? You've got your date in there."

George laughed under his breath, and bit his lip. "But you know I've only been thinking of you."

Alex frowned down at the slightly shorter man and rolled his eyes. Then, without warning, pulled him close and kissed him.
