Hansel and Gretel

Chapter summary: Just like in the original story of Hansel and Gretel, the sister tries to save her brother from the wicked witch. But maybe he doesn't want to be saved.

Once upon a time, there lived a warlock with his wife and his four children, Kai, Josette, Olivia, and Lukas. Kai and Josette were the oldest, and even though they were twins, they couldn't be more different.

Josette could do magic and, as such, she was loved by everyone. Meanwhile, Kai could only steal it from others as he was a siphoner. And so, he was considered the black sheep of the family.

One night, as Joshua kept tossing in bed, his wife turned towards him and said: "We could just abandon him."

As Joshua's eyes widened, she continued. "Kai will bring the whole family down. He's the only useless one. Tomorrow, we will lead him deep into the woods and we will leave him there. Then we will cloak the house so he will never find it again. It's the only way to keep our position in the coven."

As his wife went back to sleep, Joshua was torn. Kai was one of his children, so it pained his heart to even think about abandoning him, but at the same time, his wife's words held some truth. Joshua fell asleep with these thoughts in his head.

Unbeknown to him, Kai listened to the whole conversation from the hallway.

The next morning, Joshua went into the forest with Kai on the pretext of cutting some wood. Kai knew what was going to happen, but he pretended not to. It wouldn't change anything anyway, it was clear his parents and maybe his siblings hated him, except for Jo.

As his dad 'left' to fetch something, Kai knew that was it. From that moment on, he was alone. It didn't affect him much, he was used to being isolated and rejected. Those were his thoughts until he heard movement behind the bushes.

'Great, not only was I abandoned, but now I'm gonna get eaten by some weird animal.' Thought Kai as he rolled his eyes. This day couldn't get any worse.

But it turned out not to be any animal, as a girl with big blue eyes stepped out of the bushes.

"Jo?" Kai asked, confused. "What are you doing here?"

"I came here to bring you back home." Jo stepped closer to her twin. " I knew mom wanted to abandon you, but she could give you another chance!"

"I'm not coming back home." Kai shook his head. "Nobody except you wants me there. I'm done with this coven."

"You don't mean that.." Jo tried to plead with her brother.

"Of course I mean that!" Kai snapped. "It's easy for you to say those things when you weren't treated like the family reject just for being born." Kai sighed, his anger dissipating.

"Just go home, Jo." He turned his back on her. "Go home and prepare a feast for the next great coven leader, Luke." He spoke with bitterness in his voice.

"Fine.." Jo had tears in her eyes. "But just to warn you, I heard that a wicked, ugly witch lives in this forest. If I were you I would be careful." She crossed her arms.

Kai already started walking away from her.

"And-and she eats people!" Josette added as he kept getting further.

"Yeah, yeah." Kai answered casually.

"Uh, where are you going to go?" Jo shouted one last time.

"To a place where I'm needed." Kai shouted as well, although he had no idea which direction to take. It was a bit ironic considering he lived in this area his whole life, yet he had never been in this part of the woods. But his parents wouldn't allow him to wander too far, so how could he know?

Josette watched with regret as her twin kept getting farther and farther away from her.

He wasn't sure how many hours had passed, but he walked for quite some time. This forest really seemed to have no end, was it magical or something? As he kept wondering about this forest, keeping his head down, he noticed a path under the autumn leaves.

Kai was curious to see where this path led to, so he followed it until he saw a normal looking house, except for the fact that it was made of...gingerbread? Well, he was a bit of a glutton, so he figured a bite of that doorknob which looked like it was made of chocolate wouldn't hurt.

He went up the little stairs which led to the entrance, and as he was about to sink his teeth into that delicious-looking doorknob, the door opened suddenly which made Kai fall face-first into the little hallway at the entrance of the house. As Kai tried to get off the floor, he heard a feminine voice speak.

"Who the hell are you?"

As Kai looked up to see who had such a foul mouth, he found himself face to face with the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Granted, he didn't get to see many women since his coven kept him hidden, but he did have television which allowed him to see celebrities who were in every young man's fantasy. But still, they didn't compare to this beauty right in front of him.

As he thought these things, he finally remembered that this woman asked him a question and he probably stared at her for five minutes straight.

"Oh, I'm Kai." He tried to be as cool as possible, as he was laying down on the floor.

"Well, Kai, why are you here and why the hell were you trying to lick my doorknob?" She looked at him in disgust.

He wasn't trying to lick-nevermind.

"I was just passing by, and I saw this tasty-looking house." He explained as he got up from the floor. Also, didn't his sister mention that an evil witch lived here? He was kinda feeling unsafe right now.

"I was about to go for the windows as they looked like they were made from marzipan, but they were too high for me, so I settled for the doorknob. And also-"

As Kai began rambling, the beautiful woman cut him off. "Oh my God, stop talking. And get out of my house!"

She moved to kick him out but Kai resisted.

"Wait, don't kick me out yet! I can be useful to you!" He tried to plead with her.

"And how would you be useful to me?"

Kai refrained from telling her he was a witch, since he was ashamed of only being a siphoner. So he told her something he was truly useful at.

"I'm a great cook. You live alone, don't you?" He turned to face her as her grip on him weakened. "If you give me only a roof over my head, I can do all the chores."

The woman thought about it for a bit. It was true that she lived alone, and it was hard doing chores all by herself. And maybe a little bit lonely. So she decided to go for it.

"I'm Bonnie." The woman smiled at him and let him back into her house.

Several days passed since then, and now they were at the dinner table, eating what Kai prepared.

After Kai ate everything from his plate, he was about to get up and go wash it, until Bonnie spoke.

"Why don't you eat more?" Asked Bonnie while she was still struggling with the last piece of chicken. Kai froze in his tracks.

"Oh my god."

"What?" Bonnie looked up from her plate at Kai to see why he was so shocked.

"You're fattening me up, aren't you? The rumours were true.." Said Kai with a disappointed tone.

"Fattening you up? For what?" Bonnie was genuinely confused.

"You want to eat me." Kai narrowed his eyes at her. That statement made Bonnie burst out laughing since she never heard anything like that before.

"Eat you?" She looked him up and down. "No, thanks." Bonnie returned to her plate.

Kai should have been relieved, but he also felt a little bit offended.

"I know there are many rumours about me." Bonnie suddenly turned serious. "But they are not true. I just simply wanted a break from my hectic life from the city, and from my friends, and so I came to live here. That's all there is to it."

Kai nodded at her. "And, uhm, something I've been meaning to ask.." Kai fidgeted in his chair. "Why is this house made of candy? It's really hard not to lick my bed at night. Or the floor. Or anything, really." Kai admitted.

Bonnie laughed again. "Well, I'll tell you my secret if you tell me yours."

"My..secret?"

The witch looked him straight in the eyes. "You're a warlock, aren't you?" Kai held his breath. "A siphoner, I mean." She corrected herself.

The warlock looked down in shame and nodded a weak 'Yes'.

"How..how did you know? Since when did you know?"

"From the moment you wanted to lick my doorknob?" She smiled at him. "I could feel your energy as a witch, but not your magic..I thought it was odd."

"I'm sorry." He whispered.

She put her hand on top of his on the table, in a comforting manner. "There is nothing you have to be sorry about. In fact, this is about my secret..."

He snapped back to reality and looked back at her.

"This house is not made of candy. It was a normal house, until I angered a witch who put a curse on it and made it look this way." She looked to the side as she remebered.

"And so, I need your help. Only a siphoner can siphon the curse and make this house go back to normal." She squeezed his hand as she stared deep into his grey eyes. " Will you help me?"

Kai waited for these words all his life. To hear that someone needed him. So of course he nodded an eager yes, which made Bonnie smile again. He also felt tears coming out of his eyes, but he hoped he wasn't so lame and it was just in his imagination.

Kai touched the door which led to the entrance and siphoned all of its magic. As he did so, he felt that magic course through his veins, a feeling which he had forgotten a long time ago. After he was done siphoning, the house made of sweets turned back to its original form, which was a beautiful and big house that definitely suited Bonnie.

After all was said and done, Kai realized something horrifying.

" Since you let me stay in your house to finally lift this curse, this means you don't need me anymore, do you?" He twisted the ring on his finger.

Bonnie narrowed her eyes at him and punched him in the shoulder.

"Ouch!"

"How could you say that? You still have to clean this house, can't you see the mess in here?" She half-yelled at him.

They looked at each other for a few seconds, and then both started laughing as Bonnie jumped into his arms.

As he spun her around, Kai was finally happy. He was finally accepted for his ability, and not rejected.

In the bushes near the once-candy house, Josette sat down and continued spying. She was definitely going to save her brother from the wicked witch.

As she thought this, Jo saw her brother stepping out of the house with said witch. As Josette was ready to ambush Bonnie, what she saw next really shocked her.

The evil witch stood on her tiptoes as she kissed Kai, and he received her kiss with joy written all over his face. That's how Josette realized something.

Maybe her brother didn't need saving after all. She turned back to her house, secretly happy that her twin found a place where he belonged. She left the two lovers, as she planned to come back someday and visit.
