And Then They Made Me Their Chief . . . A Jack the Cartographer Story

Chapter 1: Prologue

Disclaimer: I don't own the characters of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Summary: What the bloody hell was Jack talking about when he was on the dock with Murtogg and Mullroy?

Note: My friends and I just had to know what he was talking about, so I wrote this for them.

"What's your purpose in Port Royal, Mr. Smith?" asked Mullroy.

"Yeah, and no lies," added Murtogg.

"Well, then, I confess, it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder, and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out!"

"I said no lies!" exclaimed Murtogg.

"I think he's telling the truth," said Mullroy quietly.

"If he was telling the truth, he wouldn't have told us," whispered Murtogg, turning his attention away from Jack.

"Unless, of course, he knew you wouldn't believe the truth even if he told it to you," said Jack interrupting the private conversation.

The two soldiers looked at each for a moment before turning their attention to Jack.

"Well if that's the case, it would be our duty to escort you down to the jail to await trial for attempted piracy," said Mullroy.

Jack's eyes widened a bit at this and he walked around the wheel and came to stand in front of Murtogg and Mullroy.

"Now, I never said that was the case, mate," said Jack. "That was all just hypothetical, you see."

"Why should we believe you?" asked Mullroy. "You look like a pirate if you ask me."

"Have you ever been to Tahiti?" asked Jack, catching the two men off guard.

"Tahiti?" asked Murtogg in confusion as Jack sauntered over to the railing of the Interceptor.

"It's an island," informed Jack, turning to look at the two men.

"We bloody well know what it is!" snapped Mullroy. "What's this got to do with anything?"

"Many years ago, when I was just a lad, I was working as a cartographer's apprentice . . ." Jack got a far off look in his eye as he began his tale.
