The Daily Life of General Studies
Hitoshi hated group chats.
Fukuro created the damned thing to build class rapport, and for the most part it served its purpose. Hitoshi was one of the first people to realize it's been made and managed to spark a few reasonable conversations with the most tolerable people in class. Makito sounded far more confident online than she was in real life, and Kamimura actually turned out to be a great conversationalist. He asked questions that Hitoshi didn't feel too secretive to answer and they talked about cafe shops they enjoyed going too as well as blends they liked the most.
It wasn't until two hours later when everyone started pilling in and all coherent talk was buried under memes and disjointed topics. Hitoshi quickly lost track of who was talking to who and gave up trying to catch up with the chat that moved faster than Speedy. The chat had already broken into smaller discussions that Hitoshi couldn't follow so he left the chat on mute.
Tenmei tried to control the flow of messages by making the chat strictly about important announcement in a long lengthy message, and Nusumi responded by creating another chat just for their shenanigans. Hitoshi was surprised to find himself in another chat that made his phone buzz non-stop. He tried leaving the spam chat but Fumei kept adding him back. He considered blocking Fumei, which he did, but in his place Kureito appeared, forwarding messages from Fumei that was meant for Hitoshi.
In the end he unblocked him, but didn't bother reading any of his messages. He simply left him on read.
The following day, Fumei stormed into the room with a pout. "SEEN SHINSOU! YOU LEFT ME ON SEEN ALL NIGHT! How fucking heartless are you?!"
Hitoshi intended to ignore Fumei the entire day, but this outburst of his felt oddly cathartic. He turned away, after smiling at him and completely blocking his presence out of his mind. Fumei shook when Hitoshi turned away, and begrudgingly sat down when Awaseru-sensei walked in.
Sensei walked straight to the podium, his nose stuck on the pages of his notebook, mumbling something too fast for anyone to catch. He didn't look like he even realized that he's already in class. Tenmei, who was seated directly in front of the instructor's desk, stood up to lead morning greeting and everyone followed suit in greeting. Sensei blinked, finally looking up in his daze.
"Right, class..." he mumbled. "Sorry, something came up and I really don't like my routine being disrupted so I'm finishing it up. I just need a few minuts. Tenmei, since you already started it, how about taking attendance as well?"
Tenmei began calling through a list of students then handed out time tables. "This is our schedule for the entire year so be careful not to lose them. In the unlikely event that you do, I'll be sure to leave a copy in our chat."
"Which chat exactly?" Nagai snickered.
Tenmei coughed, ignoring him and read the table aloud so everyone was at the same pace.
Hitoshi looked unimpressed at their schedule, only because the were all filled with general lectures. It really shouldn't come as a surprised because they were in general studies after all, however he had a small belief that Sensei was going to give them additional classes for quirk training. There was a lot of free time in the afternoon though so Hitoshi hoped they'd get their training then.
"Thank you," Awaseru-sensei said. "Now you'll be meeting your lecturers today. Some of which are shared faculty with the hero department, so -" The class suddenly erupted cheers.
"Sensei! Sensei!" Tatsumaki shouted with his arm in the air. "Is it really true All Might is teaching in Yuuei this year!?"
Hitoshi thought that All Might's addition to Yuuei's faculty was common knowledge because of the holographic letter he received a month ago. It turns out that All Might only recorded a few of those messages. Luckily or not, Hitoshi was one of the few that got it. Save for those students that got the rare All Might invitation, his attendance was left a mystery to the school. No one has seen hide nor skin of the famous hero since classes started. He wasn't even in the opening ceremony. Hitoshi supposed it was for the heroes own safety, and theirs as well.
This was All Might after all.
"Is he going to be our teacher!?" Okami yelled.
"Unfortunately, no. All Might is only teaching the hero classes. But like I said before, other heroes will be teaching you instead." – the class took the small win and cheered in quiet celebration - "I think Present Mic is set to be your English instructor."
The class gaped, except for Shiosai who covered his ears.
"But I shouldn't spoil the surprise," Awaseru-sensei dismissively said. "Heroes like the attention, so be sure to welcome them appropriately. Now what's next…? Ah yes! Do we have a spare table at the back?"
Fumei and Fukuro, who were sitting in the last row with Hitoshi and Shiosai, looked over their shoulders. "No sir, why?" Fukuro asked.
Sensei shook his head and took note of the concern on his notebook. "Guess I'll have that fixed."
"Will we have a new classmate Sensei?" Hoshi Kimura, the mushroom head curiously asks.
"The year just started though and we're already full," Katagiri said. "Isn't it be weird to have an uneven number of students."
"You can say that it's a bit – odd?" Okami said.
"Even if we had a plus one," Torii Koharu, the brunette with the portal quirk, said, "shouldn't we have met them yesterday?"
"Yes, these are all correct," Sensei agreed. "But this is something of a special case. The faculty had to figure out the best course of action so we can't say for sure if we'll welcome a new student. I'll update you once the matter's been settled. Well, then, I've done my announcement. I'll see you all later in social studies."
The bell chimed and Tenmei once again led their farewell greetings.
"Heroes…" Kamimura, who was seated in front of Hitoshi, sighed dreamily. "To think I'd have a couple teach me."
"I wonder who we'll get?" Tatsumaki, who was seated right next to her said. He craned his head over his shoulde and asked Fumei, "You have any guesses, Mr. I could've totally gotten in heroics but didn't?" added,
Fumei shrugged. "It's not like they told me which heroes are in the staff."
"Asshole," Tatsumaki spat. "But seriously, any guesses?"
"Nope," the blond said in a detached tone that Hitoshi has only heard from himself. "What about you Kamimura?"
"A girl hero would be nice," Kamimura said.
"So… Recovery Girl?" Tatsumaki quipped.
Kamimura waved her hand. "No, no, She's technically support staff, not teaching so she doesn't count."
"I'd like to have have F1!" Fukuro suddenly chimed in from Fumei's right.
"F1?" they echoed, unfamiliar with the name.
"Isn't she that hero that flies as fast as a jet plane?" Fumei said and Fukuro nodded fervently, her eyes growing wide as someone else recognized the obscure hero. "You know her too?"
Fumei rubbed his neck. "I read about her in an article once."
"Isn't she cool?! Not only does her quirk make her fly but she's a registered pilot too!" Fukuro said. "I really look up to her!"
"Oh, Fukuro," Kamimura giggled. "You must really want to fly a plane don't you?"
"I'm a bird that can't fly," the owl-girl huffed. "It's only natural I find other ways to."
Tatsumaki tapped his fingers on his table then pulled up his chair to face Fumei who looked surprised at the former focusing on him like this. "You know, for someone who doesn't want to be a hero, you sure know about the uknown ones."
"I lost interest, not living under a rock, of course I know names that have been printed in magazine or brought up in the news," Fumei said while he turned to Hitoshi, who had been listening to them in silence, but have only joined the conversation in his head. "What about you, Shinsou? Any ideas."
"Yeah!" Tatsumaki agreed. "One hero aspirant from another, who'd you want to see?"
Hitoshi has only dreamt of being mentored by one hero, and Sensei just told them it was near impossible. Regardless of this, Hitoshi answered the question with honesty, "All Might."
Kamimura mumbled something about Shinsou's basic tastes, while Tatsumaki's eyes widened. "Man, that would be the day."
Fumei placed a hand on his chin and glanced, intrigued towards Hitoshi. "Funny, I didn't think you'd be a fan of his?"
"Seriously?"
"I just thought that with a quirk like yours, you'd look up to heroes like… Eraser Head instead?" the blond suggested. "He's quiet, like you. Avoids all kinds of attention form media and just does solid honest work. You quirks aren't that far away from each other too. Completely hidden in plain sight, almost untraceable.
Hitoshi has always been aware of Eraser Head. He respected him for being one of the heroes that were content with minimal attention and simply did his job. His takedowns were always a fun time to watch, and his Fumei was right, their quirks were sort of similar. He supposed that instead of idolizing and aiming to be like All Might, he should start from somewhere easier to compare himself with first.
After all, All Might's quirk relied in brute strength while Eraser Head and Hitoshi's quirk relied on forethought and careful planning.
"He's got a point," Kamimura continued. "I remember my mom saying that Eraser Head started out as general student too."
Hitoshi blinked. "H - He did?"
"Yeah like, he took the festival by storm. Defeated all the hero kids in the finals and got himself the recommendation for the hero course," Kamimura said.
Hitoshi's eyes grew wide at the sheer bad-assery of that move and wondered if history would repeat itself, only this time with him as its victor. Fumei smiled at the look on his face and said, "Better work hard for it then."
"But Eraser Head's quirk is nothing like Shinsou's," Tatsumaki argued. "Erasure stops quirks for a while, while brainwashing… takes away your ability to think. He can literally tell you to do anything he wants without reservation."
Hitoshi glared at Tatsumaki, who glared back at him. He knew those eyes well. They were eyes of someone who's already convinced by the evil behind his quirk. Hitoshi didn't blame him. People tended to be afraid of the unknown. Hitoshi only knew one way to stop non-believers after all, and that was showing them just how wrong they were.
Fumei seemed to notice the growing animosity between the two and sighed. "Quit it, Tatsumaki. Shinsou's trying just as hard to be a hero like you. And I wouldn't be too afraid of his quirk if I were you. He's got more control over it than you do yours."
"Wha-! How would you know!"
"Well for one, you've passed out after using your quirk, and he stopped three people at once with a single order. Between the two of you, I'd say he's more ready to be a hero than you," Fumei bluntly said, making Tatsumaki flush in embarassment and Kamimura had to pat his head out of pity.
Hitoshi turned to look out the window on his left to hide the shock on his face. Fumei just complimented him and his quirk control. No one has done that before and Hitoshi honestly didn't know how to take it. Does he say thanks? As if he'd ever show gratitude towards Fumei.
Ectoplasm walked in with multiple copies of himself shadowing him from behind shortly after, and after the clones introduced themselves, they merged into one body and made a low bow. The class applauded his performance, then the hero proceeded to orient the class onmathematics.
Hitoshi tried to focus on Ectoplasm's discussion, but was too distracted by Fumei's obvious lack of interest on the lecture. The blond slide himself lower behind his desk and sent a text message to Kureito on the other end of the room. Kureito snickered and Fumei fixed hismelf on his chair. These two seriously should get reprimanded for not listening in class.
After an uneventful modern literature class, the sound of amplification noise came from behind the class door. "YO, YO, YO, HIGH ENERGY LISTENERS AAAAAAAAAAW YOU REAAAADY TO BEEGIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"
The dining hall was much larger than Hitoshi imagined it would be. There were several long tables, each capable of housing ten people, were spaced neatly across the hall. It was enough to house the entire student populace should they have the same lunch breaks. Scattered around the hall were about fifty of more food stalls for students to choose from.
Hitoshi studied them all at a distance and wondered if there was a cheap option. As he looked through the prices, Hitoshi was reminded that Yuuei was actually a very expensive private school. He only managed to enroll because his father, who was mostly an absentee father since the divorce, wanted to support him the way his wife couldn't. The tuition was paid even before Hitoshi could offer to pay half of it with part time work, but his father insisted to pay all of it. He even gave Hitoshi a small allowance for lunch meals, but it looked like it wasn't enough for a full meal. Instead, Hitoshi found himself standing in line in the cheapest option in the hall with people in the same boat as him.
He bumped into Koharu and Tatsumaki while the latter were searching for similarly cheap options. "Shinsou? You're broke too?" Tatsumaki asked.
Hitoshi frowned. "Don't say it like that."
Tatsumaki guffawed and patted Hitoshi's back. "That's okay! Not everyone can be rich in this school." He looked over the long line behind Hitoshi, and almost immediately Hitoshi read the thought in his mind before Tatsumaki could say it. "No. Wait in line like the rest of us."
"Aw come on! Just this once! I won't call your quirk scary ever again if you do."
Oh right, he did call it that. Suddenly, Hitoshi felt more inclined to make the green haired student suffer.
Tatsumaki begged Hitoshi on his knees while Koharu stared up on the ceiling, his mind in a daze because of hunger.
"Oh? Shinsou, have you not bought your meals yet?" Tenmei's voice suddenly came ahead of them, on his hands were four sets of bento boxes, while his companions, Makito , Kimura, and Nusumi carried a tray of miso soup and drinks.
"It's impossible!" Tatsumaki answered in Hitoshi's case. "Everything's too expensive and this is the only line with the cheapest food. We won't make it till next period."
Koharu was now groaning and rubbing his aching stomach. "Look! Koharu's dying. How did you guys even get bento boxes that fast?"
"Ah well…" Tenmei glanced towards Nusumi who looked around innocently.
"The sprinklers above the line broke and people walked off pissed," Makito whispered.
Nusumi couldn't help herself and giggled. "It was very funny."
Hitoshi narrowed his eyes on Nusumi, thinking that her luck based quirk had something to do with their lucky break. "Isn't that cheating?"
"Not if they don't know about it~"
"We didn't consent to it," Tenmei said, "but with the line already cut in half. We thought why not?"
Hitoshi caught the grin on Tatsumaki's face and shook his head. "I thought you two wanted to be heroes. How could you even consider taking advantage of her quirk to get what you want?"
"Relax Shinsou," Tatsumaki said. "It's just food."
"First it'll be on food, the next it will be something worse."
Tatsumaki rolled his eyes while Koharu argued, "I know it's not exactly right, but I also don't want to be a hungry hero."
"Well then boys," Nusumi grinned. "Let's live the high life and feed ourselves! Last call Shinsou?"
Hitoshi looked at the line before him, and the bento stall at the other end of the hall, and deliberately fought temptation. He shook his head. "I'm fine."
"But, Shinsou!" Tatsumaki cried.
"I'm not going to stand by and let her use her quirk however she wants. It's wrong and unbecoming of someone who wants to be a hero."
"That's what I said!" Makito said. Nusumi pouted but she didn't seem as offended by it. "Well, whatever. If raccoon eyes doesn't want help I won't force him. You two still want it?"
"Do we!?" the pair screamed and followed Nusumi off to Lunch-Rush's stall. Makito and Kimura exchanged worried looks before silently slinking away to find a table.
Tenmei lagged behind and smiled proudly at Hitoshi. "That was upstanding of you. I am ashamed to say... I have fallen into the temptation of food as well. Would you like something off my set? I can spare you a fruit cup."
"No, I'm good." Hitoshi stood his ground. "I accept anything from food stolen."
Tenmei looked like a kicked puppy as he looked down at the bento boxes on his hand. "We paid for them though."
And Hitoshi found that worse. They had the money to pay for full meals, while he was stuck here with sandwiches.
Hitoshi stomped back to the lecture rooms with a full but unsatisfied stomach. Koharu and Tatsumaki ran past him completely rejuvinated by their sponsored meal (thanks Nusumi), and Hitoshi hissed. He found himself suddenly regretting standing by his morals and flopped back on his seat with obvious frustration on his face. He grabbed Fumei's hand that was about to poke his face and hissed, "Don't."
"Someone's in a bad mood. What? Lunch didn't go well?"
Hitoshi kept his mouth shut, not planning to share his second biggest regret since coming to Yuuei. Kureito walked over to hand a box of Pocky to Fumei, then raised a curious brow. "What's up with him?"
"He's hangry I think."
Kureito offered Hitoshi a piece of Pocky and said, "It's not much but it should quell that frown off your face."
"I don't want it."
"Just something to ease the anger," Kureito said. "No one wants your scary quirk going off."
Hitoshi glared daggers through Kureito, who shuddered almost satisfyingly at the gesture. "Now that's a scary look, hero. Gon' order me to fuck off?"
Fumei looked between them and waved his hand. "Okay maybe try not to piss off Shinsou who'se already pissed off, Jin?" Kureito raised his hands in defeat and eased off on teashing Hitoshi. "I'm sure Hitoshi's got his quirk under control, and sides he's not petty enough to order you just because you're annoying."
"He's done it to you."
"Yeah, well, we didn't need to be civil back then yet." Fumei clapped his hands as though an idea just sparked in his head. "Oh, I know! We need desensitization!"
Kureito and Hitoshi both frowned at the heavy word. "Hey! Anyone one here wants to see how Shinsou's quirk works!?" A couple of heads turned to them in interest but only one raised her hand to accept the challenge.
"Are we going to try and break out of it?" Okami asked, lumbering over with her imaginary tail swaying in obvious excitement. "I want to do it! I can beat it!"
Doe Shanti, Okami's friend with the deer antlers, also stepped close and voiced out her concern. "Aren't you scared at what he would make you do though?"
Okami scoffed. "Why would I? Shinsou wants to be a hero right? He may look like he doesn't get decent sleep but I bet he's a good guy deep down. I trust him with whatever he wants to make me do." She punched a fist against her palm. "I'll break through it anyway."
Half the class waited for Hitoshi's answer which left the latter baffled. Normally people afraid of his quirk would avoid it altogether or prove a point by pissing him off so much that Hitoshi doesn't realize he'd already ordered them to do something, not actively make him brainwash them so they can fight it. It was all so bizarre. Hitoshi glanced at Fumei who was laughing at Okami's repeated pleas for Hitoshi to just get it over with.
This has got to be some plan against him. Fumei has been adamant about learning about the ins and out of his quirk since they first met. Hitoshi guessed that Fumei knew the conditions behind his quirk, and was not thinking or devising of a way to fight against it while under it. Fumei already knew how to avoid being under it just by seeing his quirk in action twice.
"I'm not doing that."
Okami gasped. "What? Why?! You're not afraid I'd actually break it are you?"
"I'm not. I just don't use my quirk like that."
Okami blinked, confused. "You just lost me. You've got a pretty mind boggling quirk and you won't use it? Like what gives?"
"I just don't like using it, alright?"
Okamu huffed. "That's not fair, I want to know how it feels! Do you need permission 'cause I'm giving it to you buddy. Hit me with your mind ray, do it!"
Fumei chuckled, and Hitoshi rolled his eyes. Okami. yet another stubborn mind grinned. "Why? You chicken, Shinsou? Scared it won't work on me? That I'd actually prove Im stronger than you?"
Hitoshi clicked his tongue at the challenge. Was he that easy to bait into performing his best? "Fine. We do this once, and you leave me alone."
"Deal!"
"Pretend to be a chicken on Sensei's table," Hitoshi ordered, and Okami did as told.
Fukuro recorded the whole thing on her phone, while Shanti had a mixture of disbelief and awe in her face. Okami then tried to chase after Hadesu who tried to get her down the table, and Hitoshi released his quirk before it took a turn for the worse. Okami yelled, frustrated that she couldn't get out of his control and begged Hitoshi to do it again. Hitoshi just waved her off, reminding her of their deal.
A/N: AN UPDAAAATE WHAT UP?!
I'm feeling the stride right now, so I decided not to stop. Again, most chapters aren't beta-read so I might change a few lines here and there but relatively same flow. I told myself I wouldn't make seat numbers for the class because it's too much work, but I ended up doing it anyway (sta. s h / 010 21 ta6s ge6) take out the spaces and your good. This chapter could've had two endings, one where Shinsou accepts Nusumi 's offer and this. A friend told me it feels more in character for Shinsou to refuse so here we are.
Koharu Torii is a character by Percues Jackson, and birthed a name by me.
Let's play a game. Find the badly put star wars reference (because Horikoshi is a nerd, and I want to follow suit.) Don't forget to follow, favorite or comment on the story. They all fuel me to make more chapters. Sushi OUT!
