Chapter 2: Wings of Time

August 8th 1970, 12 Grimmauld Place

Hydrus Black lay upside down on his bed at night, the messy mop of hair on his head flopping backwards. He inhaled deeply, staring at the half-sketched mess of an owl in his hands and frowned. This was the drawing he was in the middle of when Sirius' screams echoed through those walls right next to him. When he, Hydrus, shoved his younger brother out of the way of the monster they used to call their mother. When he blasted Walburga against the wall in order to save the rest of his family.

Hydrus exhaled, thinking of what had come of her death. The rest of the Black family were going to cast Orion and Hydrus, Sirius and Regulus out, when Arcturus reminded them all that Hydrus was their heir, thankfully keeping them in. But Hydrus was only thankful, as this way he would have access to the diary and the Hufflepuff cup. Hermione and himself hadn't exactly been planning how to rid the horcruxes, but had a rough idea. I should probably write her a letter soon-

Hydrus' thoughts were cut off by a tapping on his window. Instinctively, he grabbed his wand from the table and pointed it in the direction of the source of the sound. Ever since the little escalade when Hermione used a wand to try and prevent Remus from being bitten by Greyback, Hydrus and Hermione had discovered that their traces were undetectable considering their magical cores were technically both adults. But Hydrus was genuinely confused about the sound he heard. Until, of course, he heard the caw.

He sagged his shoulders in relief, put his special Holly Wood wand onto the bedside table and opened up the window. In flew a large raven and perched onto Hydrus' bed knob, a letter in its sharp beak. "Hello, Onyx." Hydrus cooed, tickling the dark bird under its chin. It was a tip the boy had learnt in order to get Onyx to drop letters; he wasn't the friendliest unless you were a Lupin.

Hydrus took the letter as Onyx dropped it, carefully opening the seal. Like always, the seal was stamped with a crescent moon and a single shooting star. Pulling the piece of parchment out, Hydrus read his best friend's letter.

Dear Hydy,

Hydrus immediately groaned. Hermione thought it would be funny to mix the names Harry and Hydrus together, but in result got a name that sounded just like 'Heidi'.

Dear Hydy,

Considering you're going off to Hogwarts in less than 23 days now, I seriously suggest we have a little talk about the you-know-whats. Remus still thinks I'm a seer, so we're all good in that department. Have you had a 'family meeting' with the Malfoys yet? I wouldn't be surprised if they've already planned for Narcissa and Lucius to marry. Meet me at Lupin Lodge tomorrow at 6.30am sharp, I don't care if you have plans, they can wait.

Sincerely, Hermione J. Lupin

Hydrus scanned the letter a final time for any hidden meanings, when he was sure there were none- besides of course the 'you-know-whats' being horcruxes- he put the letter into his draw. Hermione had already put a charm onto the paper so only he could read it after Regulus accidentally got hold of one of Hermione's letters. Thankfully, she had kept that one abrupt and to the point, basically asking if he wanted to meet up to help her find a book on herbology due to a mysterious plant growing near their lodge.

Hydrus was certain he wasn't doing anything at 8am the next day, so grabbed a pen and scribbled her a reply before giving the note back to Onyx. It was time to get serious.

The next day, Hydrus woke up at 6am and began to get ready. He was still really quite tired due to his mind buzzing with thoughts all night, but he wasn't about to give up on one of the single most important meetings because of that.

Hydrus still had some useful skills that Harry Potter had had; cooking, for example. Hydrus was a great cook, and though he would never admit it, Sirius' favourite food was almost certainly the bacon his elder brother would make for the family. Hydrus was, in fact, cooking that when his sleepy younger brother walked in.

"Hy?" Sirius asked, rubbing an eye with the back of his hand, "Are you cooking bacon?" He enquired, silently raising his head and sniffing the air, his eyes ajar ever so slightly. Even when he's not an animagus, Sirius still has some dog-like features. Hydrus mused, grabbing some prongs and turning the bacon over.

"Why yes, I am cooking bacon." Hydrus said, stifling a laugh as Sirius sleepily placed himself down at the table. "What are you doing up, Siri?" He asked, an eyebrow raised. Whilst Regulus was an early riser and Hydrus was a bit of an unpredictable one, Sirius would normally sleep in as long as he could.

Sirius shrugged, his silver eyes just about adjusted to the light. "I smelt bacon, so I came downstairs to see if I could snag some." He said simply. Hydrus chuckled, always so to the point, Sirius.

"Well, alright then." Hydrus said, shaking his head slightly. Sirius hopped down from the table and wandered over to where his brother was cooking, having to go onto his tiptoes slightly to see his favourite food being cooked. Hydrus saw that his younger brother was staring so intently that his eyes may just dry up. "Are you… going to ask for some nicely, or…" Hydrus asked, eyeing his brother.

"Nope." Sirius said, popping the P. Typical Sirius, Hydrus thought once more. "Cause I know that you'll give me some anyway." Sirius shrugged, taking a deep inhalation of the smell. He reached his hand over to grab some, but his big brother pushed it away.

"Sirius, it's not done yet. And besides, you haven't asked. And if you don't ask, you don't get, little bro." Hydrus said with a laugh. Even though there was just over a year between the pair, Hydrus stood about a head and a half taller than Sirius, something he enjoyed. Height wasn't something Harry Potter had, but Hydrus Black always used it to his advantage. Sirius groaned, looking- rather glaring- up at Hydrus.

"May I have some bacon when you're done." Sirius said, completely monotone. Hydrus tapped his chin in thought.

"What do you say?" He asked, a smirk forming in the corner of his mouth. Teasing Sirius was definitely one of his favourite things to do. Regulus took things too seriously and was a little sensitive, but the middle brother really didn't care after about a minute passed.

"Please." Sirius said through gritted teeth, "May I have some bacon, o'dearest brother of mine, please?"

Hydrus pretended to be in deep thought before tossing a slice in Sirius' direction. Said boy gladly grabbed it and scampered away to the table to demolish it. Another satisfied customer, Hydrus laughed to himself, putting the rest of the bacon slices into a box. Sirius looked up curiously, probably wondering what his brother was doing.

"I'm meeting a friend in… two minutes." Hydrus said, looking at the clock. "Please can you tell Father?" He asked Sirius.

"Who ya meetin'?" Sirius asked whilst chewing the remains of his bacon strip. Hydrus rolled his eyes having told his little brother not to chew with his mouth open so many times he had lost count. "I won't tell him if you don't tell me."

"I'm seeing the Lupin twins." Hydrus shrugged. He knew Sirius too well and therefore knew that if he discluded Remus from the picture his younger brother would mercilessly tease him. Sirius had yet to meet Hermione and Remus, but he had heard plenty about them. He wasn't about to tell Sirius that Remus and Hermione were his age, however, because otherwise he would be forced to drag his little brother along. The last thing he wanted was to drag Sirius out of trouble when Hermione and himself were talking about all the dates of deaths and death eater attacks that would come up. Hydrus wasn't sure when he would tell Sirius about their ages yet, maybe he could discuss that with Hermione as well…

"Alright." Sirius said, licking his fingers clean and cutting off Hydrus' train of thought, "I'll let him know. If I get another slice of bacon." He said, wiggling his eyebrows. Hydrus took a deep breath and reluctantly handed Sirius another slice. "Bye, Hy."

"Bye, Siri." Hydrus waved, stepping into the floo. "Lupin Lodge!" He called out, and was engulfed by the green flames.

August 9th 1970, Lupin Lodge

Hermione was waiting by the floo at 6:29 am, tapping her foot on the wooden floorboards, counting down seconds until she would scold her best friend for being late. Remus was still asleep and she intended to keep it that way, so had put silencing charms all over the living room where the floo was, knowing the roaring sound the flames made. "Five… four… three.. two… one, and ze-"

Hermione's counting was cut off by the roaring green flames spitting out a boy with curled coal black hair. Hydrus pushed his now cracked glasses up his nose and stumbled out of the floo, bashing his head on the way. He rubbed the newly formed bump and winced. "Ouch…" he groaned. Hermione rolled her eyes.

"Honestly Hydy, you've fought Voldemort in another life and you're whining over a bruise?" She asked incredulously, raising an eyebrow and folding her arms. She slowly shook her head with a sigh when Hydrus looked up at her from the floor. Taking a wand off the sofa, she helped him up. "But… you are on time for once, so I guess you get some points for that. Oculus Reparo." She said, quickly repairing her friend's glasses with her father's wand.

"Nice to see you too, Mione." Hydrus intoned, putting out a flaming ember on his shoulder and brushing soot off his nose. "Right, so, where are we having this conversation?" Hydrus asked her.

"The woods. I don't know if you've realised, but it was a full moon last night and Remus is kind of… out there somewhere. I've been looking for him on my own since we were six, so don't worry; our parents won't interrupt." Hermione told him. Hydrus had 'discovered' Remus was a werewolf soon after the twins' seventh birthday.

"Ok." Hydrus said simply. He glanced around for the key to the floo and switched it off before sliding open the back door, leading to the woodland outside. "Ready to go and 'search for your brother' my fair lady?" He asked with a mock bow.

Hermione sighed and pushed past him muttering, "Honestly, Hydrus." More to herself than anyone else. Hydrus laughed and followed her outside, grabbing a charmed pencil and paper on the way out. "Ok," Hermione began, navigating her way through the forest, "I suggest we head towards the hill to talk; Remus is rarely ever there." Hydrus nodded once at this. As they walked, Hydrus finished the last of his bacon.

They followed the trail until they reached a clearing in the woods and a large, grass covered hill- more like a small mountain- with a single cherry tree and bench on top was there. Hydrus claimed half way up the tree whilst Hermione sat in its shade, catching the notepad and pencil when Hydrus dropped it down to her.

"Right," Hydrus began, "First things first; I'm going to get into Slytherin." He said simply. "Only Father knows a third of the real reason why I'm going to be there of course." He shrugged, picking a cherry from a nearby branch and eating it before spitting the pip off into the distance somewhere.

"So your father knows that you'll be in Slytherin because you would do anything to protect your brothers, not so you can spy and that your other ambition is taking down the Dark Lord?" Hermione asked, an eyebrow raised. Hydrus simply nodded and laughed at that, but soon the laughter disappeared.

"Merlin, Sirius is really going to hate me." He murmured quietly, "It will take a while to gain his trust back again." Hydrus sighed. Hermione looked up at him sympathetically.

"Hey," She said quietly, "that's what I'm here for, right? I can easily get his opinion to change… that is if I'm in Gryffindor myself and not any of the other three houses." At Hydrus' incredulous look, she rolled her eyes, "I could be a Puff, you know, I'm very loyal towards my brother and friends." Hydrus continued his look, making Hermione sigh, "Ok, ok, brother and friend."

"No offence or anything, Mione," Hydrus said, taking another cherry and rolling it about in the palm of his hand, "But you're sometimes just a little too aggressive to be a Hufflepuff. And don't get me wrong, you're definitely smart enough to be a Ravenclaw, and ambitious and resourceful enough for Slytherin, but let's be honest; you're still a Gryffindor at heart." Hydrus said, spitting out the pip from the cherry he was chewing, and cringing as it hit a now scowling Hermione on the head. She glared at him, causing Hydrus to put his hands up in defence. "Moving on," the boy said quickly, moving from his hammock position to swinging his legs over the edge, "Horcruxes and old Moldy-Wart."

"Right." Hermione said, twisting her pencil so the led was hovering just above the page, "so I think we should wait awhile before we get the diadem; you'll be sharing a dorm with Slytherin boys, after all, and you know how arrogant and nosey they are." Hermione said, and Hydrus nodded but also scoffed in mock offence causing the girl to roll her eyes yet again. "I'll get the diadem and keep it safe in my undetectable extension charm bag, so then-"

"Woah, woah, woah!" Hydrus said, cutting her off, his eyes wide, "You did that again? You're what, nine?"

"Ten, actually." Hermione corrected, cringing at how ridiculous and young she sounded, "But I did perform the charm when I was nine, yes. Anyway, like I was saying before you interrupted me, I'll get the diadem when I joking Hogwarts, and you can focus on retrieving the Hufflepuff cup from the Black vault when Bellatrix receives it, as well as the Diary, which will be somewhere in Malfoy manor. Of course, you will have to probably wait awhile until either the wedding of Narcissa and Lucius or their engagement party or what-not. Either way, you're in charge of those two. Nagini doesn't exist right now and, well, the Gaunt ring and Slytherin Locket are another matter entirely, not to be worried about just yet. I think it'll be smartest to find them later on." She rambled.

Trying to keep up with her, Hydrus nodded his head after some thought. Instead of saying 'Yeah, Ok', which he was almost certain would cause Hermione to glare at him. "I think that also sounds best… but what do I do for my first year at Hogwarts? And I swear, Hermione, if you say become best friends with Avery and Dolohov, I am literally going to kill you." Hydrus said, staring down at her intensely. Hermione was clearly stifling a laugh at this, so Hydrus stood on his branch and shook some leaves and possibly also cherries and twigs down onto her.

"HYDRUS!" Hermione yelled, "What was that for?" She gaped, throwing her hands into balls at her side, similar to a toddler having a tantrum, Hydrus observed. When he didn't answer, partly due to his laughter, Hermione continued, "I wasn't planning on having you befriend Avery and Dolohov, but now I'm being honest, I'm really considering it." She drawled, performing her all-so-famous glare on him.

"Come on, Mione, it's just a joke." Hydrus said, perching on his branch like a monkey. When she continued to glare, he said, "But all jokes aside, my first year will be pretty boring if I can't do anything besides new wizard work."

"You can have friends, you know." Hermione told her best friend, "I know for a fact Frank Longbottom is in your year group, and when she goes to Hogwarts, Alice Fortesque will be in my year. To be honest, if you do befriend him, we could probably set Neville's parents up." Hermione mused aloud.

"You really think Frank Longbottom would ever befriend a Slytherin? You think any Gryffindors would befriend a Slytherin?" Hydrus asked her, giving Hermione a look of disbelief. "If this time is anything like our old- well, future now I guess- timeline, then Gryffs and Slyths will forever be mortal enemies." He intoned. "And I suddenly think I have a solution to my Sirius problem, and if he's lucky, it might just be able to save Snape's fate at the same time." Hydrus told his best friend.

"You'll find a way to make things work, Hydy, I trust you," Hermione smiled up at him, "even if trouble always finds you." She added with a roll of her chestnut eyes, making Hydrus laugh.

"Hopefully, Hydrus Black will have better luck than Harry Potter, though knowing my brain and soul or what not, that's really not going to happen." The boy said, running a hand through his hair awkwardly. "You see, Hermione, most kids at Hogwarts wouldn't have to battle a troll in their first year, defeat a giant snake in the second, be chased by a madman who turned out to be your own godfather in the third and be involuntarily entered in a deadly competition in your fourth, leading to the rise of the Dark Lord once more. I didn't exactly have a normal childhood, Mione."

"You mean we didn't exactly have normal childhoods. I was with you the whole time, when I wasn't putting pieces of the puzzle together for you I was being attacked by the troll, petrified by the snake or chased by a wolf alongside time travelling with you. I was even forced to keep Rita Skeeter in a jar so she wouldn't-"

"WAIT WHAT?" Hydrus yelled, "You did what?" Hermione turned the colour of scarlet as she looked sheepishly up at him.

"Yeah, uh, Rita Skeeter was kinda an unregistered animagus." Hermione said, at Hydrus' still shocked state, she continued, "A beetle, if you were interested."

"I quote our old-future-past friend Ron, you can be scary sometimes. Brilliant, but scary." Hydrus said. Hermione just laughed and elbowed the tree, causing Hydrus to lose balance and fall off backwards, therefore leading Hermione to laugh harder. Her laugh was infectious, and soon the pair were laughing their heads off and throwing bits of leaves and grass at each other. "We should probably go and find Remus." Hydrus laughed, beckoning her to follow him down the hill.

"Yeah, you're right. He'll start to think we weren't looking at all." Hermione giggled, pulling a leaf from her hair. "You know, I really missed this, being a kid. Time really flies when you temporarily don't have part of the weight of the world on your shoulders."

"The only other time I've seen you this giddy was when you were drunk. And even then, that didn't last long because Katie Bell sorta got possessed." Hydrus said, skipping down the hill alongside her. "Right, where's Remus at."

It took Hermione and Hydrus about five minutes before they stumbled upon Remus. "Hey, Remus." Hermione waved, and the boy's head shot up, his hair ruffled and his smile wide. His body was littered with scars and scratches, but nonetheless he looked quite content sitting in the forest under the canopies.

"Hey," He greeted, "Hydrus, long time no see. It's been what, a week?" Remus asked. Hydrus laughed at that. Usually, he would meet the twins, or just Hermione, three times a week. The last couple of times, however he had been busy preparing for Hogwarts.

"Sorry about that," Hydrus apologised, offering his hand to help Remus up. However, the sandy haired boy shook his head slightly and gestured to his foot. Hermione bent down in concern, looking over it with caution. Her eyes suddenly winded and she looked her brother in the eye.

"Remus!" She scolded. "You've got a massive gash on the back of your ankle, it's really deep! Oh, and it's still bleeding; why haven't you applied pressure to it with a leaf, or something?" She asked her twin. Remus winced at her outburst.

"I did, to begin with, but it really hurts. And by the way, I didn't do this as the wolf. I did this as myself, just typical me, to slip over and fall backwards onto a rock. I think I twisted my ankle at the same time, so, uh… yeah. Fun." Remus said the end word with heavy sarcasm, looking at his injury himself. "It is quite deep, isn't it?" He asked rhetorically with morbid wonder.

"Quite deep?" Hermione asked quietly, Hydrus and Remus both put their fingers in their ears, knowing what could come next, "QUITE DEEP?" Hermione exploded, "REMUS JOHN LUPIN! This- This cut could have been done by five freakin' slicing hexes! You didn't think to call for help or- or something?" She asked.

"Sorry." Remus whispered, rolling his eyes as Hermione began to inspect the cut again. "It's not like you can see the bone or anything." He said, then mouthed to Hydrus 'Right?' The older boy shook his head with a slight smile, putting his hands into his pockets and pulling out a bar of chocolate and handing it to his friend. Remus gratefully ate it up.

Once he was done with it, Hydrus and Hermione helped him up and Hydrus gave him a piggyback back to the house. There, Hermione opened the door and Hydrus set Remus down on the loveseat in the living room.

"Guys." Hydrus said suddenly after the other boy was settled and healed with Hermione's 'natural healing magic', capturing both twins attention. "We need to talk Sirius." He said.

"Serious?" Remus asked, at the same time Hermione asked, "What about him?"

Hydrus just shook his head with a slight smile, turning to face Remus. "Not serious, Sirius." When Remus looked more confused, Hydrus added, "One of my younger brothers, the middle one." Remus still looked a little puzzled, but slowly nodded.

"I repeat, what about him?" Hermione asked, a curious eyebrow raised.

"Well, he's going to be in your year at Hogwarts, and I want you guys to get along with him but he can be a little… boisterous? Yeah, that's Sirius in one word. Anyway, my point is, once he realises you're going to be in the same year group, he kinda won't let me come here alone again." Hydrus said, biting his lip and twisting his hands nervously.

"Right." Hermione said, pacing the floors with a thoughtful sigh, "Uh, we can't really leave it any later, can we, with you going off to Hogwarts so soon…"

"Why doesn't he come over today?" Remus piped up from the corner of the room. When he only received a gaping Hydrus and Hermione in return, he slowly continued, "I mean, if you're not busy or anything?" Hydrus started spluttering something whilst Hermione looked mildly concerned.

"Remus," Hydrus said, putting a hand on the younger boy's shoulder, "I know you aren't exactly the best at meeting new people, and what I guess I'm trying to say is…" Hydrus ran a hand down his face and took a deep breath, "Are you ready to be bombarded with questions from an overly-curious boy?" He asked, an eyebrow raised.

Remus sighed, "Sure, if he's related to you, then he probably already knows I'm a werewolf, doesn't he?" Hydrus shook his head. "Oh, you didn't tell anyone?" Remus said, a slight spark in his eyes.

"Of course not!" Hydrus said, "Not that Sirius would tell anyone; he's a bit of a jerk sometimes, but he's definitely good at keeping secrets."

"I don't see any problem in him coming round now then. It's after the moon, so I'll be alright. We can just say I fell over in the woods as an excuse and Hermione's not doing anything, so unless you're busy…"

"I'll see if he wants to come over then." Hydrus smiled, stepping into the floo, "See you guys again soon, only next time I'll have a dog to keep under control." He added with a wink, making Hermione laugh at the little inside joke and Remus raise a confused eyebrow. "12 Grimmauld Place!" Hydrus yelled, throwing the floo powder down.

Hydrus stepped through the floo into the house he grew up in and dusted off his cloak. "Sirius?" He called out into the house. Soon, he heard footsteps thundering down the staircase and the boy in question appeared.

"Hello, Hydrus." He said, leaning on the door frame, "Dad and Reg have gone out to go and get a book or something; not really sure, didn't pay attention." Sirius shrugged, causing his elder brother to roll his eyes. "Why are you still standing in the floo?" Sirius asked.

"I wondered if you wanted to come and meet the twins?" Hydrus asked and Sirius went to say something, but his brother continued to speak, "They're going to be in your year at Hogwarts so…" he told Sirius. The younger boy's eyebrows were suddenly raised in surprise and he raced forward and hopped into the fireplace.

"Why didn't you say so before?" He asked, pouting slightly.

"Remus is a bit shy when meeting new people, and no offence, Sirius, but you're not exactly the best at communicating with shy people." Hydrus laughed.

"Where are we heading, anyway?" Sirius asked, pretty much ignoring Hydrus. In an answer with a sigh, Hydrus threw down the floo powder.

"Lupin Lodge!"

Hydrus kept his hands on Sirius' shoulders to prevent him from running out immediately and exploring the house, bombarding the pair with questions and blurting 'secrets' about his older brothers.

"Hello, you must be Sirius," Hermione began, walking over to Sirius. Hydrus' little brother seemed to be holding in about ten thousand questions. Hermione held out a hand for him to shake and Sirius took it. "I'm Hermione, and my twin brother, Remus, is just over there." She smiled, gesturing towards the boy sitting on the chair in the corner of the room. "I can see you about to burst…" Hermione said slowly, making Sirius glance up at his brother before nodding his head, "You're aloud to speak, you know. I won't run away-"

"Thank Merlin," Sirius let out a loud sigh, "I'm Sirius, yes, but you already knew that." He laughed. "So, uh, what do you guys usually do here?" He questioned, cocking his head to the right and blinking like an inquisitive puppy. Whilst Hermione and Hydrus exchanged a glance, Remus began to talk.

"Well normally, we just talk or play hide and seek in the woodland, or we just kind of play, mess about, that sort of thing." Remus told him, standing up and walking over to where Sirius and Hydrus had stepped out of the floo.

"Cool!" Sirius exclaimed, "Can we go into the woods now?" He asked. Hydrus sent the twins an apologetic look, but only Hermione received it as Remus nodded with a little shrug. He beckoned Sirius over to the door and as soon as he opened it, Sirius raced out into the wilderness.

"Sirius!" Hydrus called, sighing slightly when his brother ignored him completely. He turned to Hermione saying a swift sorry before racing off after his brother to prevent him from running into an aggressive unicorn… or something. "Come back here!" Hydrus yelled. He could hear Remus and Hermione leap out the door to join the chase as well, and as if it was planned, the three friends split up to track Sirius, the wolf pack hunting together to track down their prey.

Hydrus paused as he heard a twig snap from Sirius' direction and stealthily crept up behind the boy, treading on the balls of his feet. When he was close enough, Hydrus leapt at his brother, knocking him to the ground, laughing when Sirius' high pitched scream echoed through the forest.

Hermione and Remus stifled laughter as they saw Sirius squirming under his brother's grip. "Rule number one," Hydrus said to Sirius, though he was looking Hermione in the eye, "Constant Vigilance." She shook her head with a small smile, recalling Mad-eye Moody's favourite expression.

The rest of the day was spent by the four playing hide and seek, though it didn't last long when Remus was the seeker, thanks to his enhanced lupine senses. When Hydrus and Sirius headed back home, Hermione sat by herself back upon the hill-mountain, looking around at the forest whilst the summer's breeze tasseled her hair. She closed her eyes, breathing in the fresh scents of cherry blossoms and took the pencil and paper back out from her pocket and tapped the pencil to the back page. "I solemnly swear I will destroy You-Know-Who." She spoke. And slowly, their plan revealed itself on the page.

It wouldn't be much longer for Hydrus and Hermione to start to spin their plan into action.

But when the time would come, Hermione knew she would be ready.

They both would be ready.
