Carol and Daryl, military base
Aaron and Gabriel were still coordinating the rebuilding of Alexandria, while a group led by Maggie, Carol and Daryl, headed out to a military base to search for something edible.
After they succeeded, they headed back to Alexandria. Carol glanced at Daryl as they were walking side by side. Daryl glanced at her too. Carol's eyes fell on Daryl's arm which he accidentally had cut with a rope at the military base.
"Can I check it?" asked Carol unsurely. Daryl glanced at his own arm which was still bleeding a little bit.
"It's fine," he growled.
"At least put something over it, so it won't get infected," said Carol disappointed. Daryl stopped, she stopped too. Daryl held out his arm without saying anything. Carol grabbed a piece of clean cloth from her pocket and stepped closer to him to bandage the wound. Daryl was watching Carol the entire time while she was disinfecting the wound, then she wrapped the bandage around it. When she finished, she glanced at him, and their eyes met.
"Thanks," Daryl murmured. Carol nodded then turned around and they continued their way to Alexandria.
Jesus and Maggie were watching the scene from a couple of meters afar.
"Do you think they will ever get together?" asked Jesus wondering. Maggie shrugged her shoulder, smiling slightly.
"No idea. They've been doing this for years. When I first met them I thought they were already a couple," said Maggie glancing at Jesus.
"Really? Since that long?" asked Jesus disbelievingly.
"Hey, don't gossip. It's rude," said Henry jokingly. He was walking behind Jesus and Maggie with Lydia.
"Sorry, buddy," said Jesus smiling.
…
When they stepped through the gates of Alexandria, Gabriel approached them immediately. Negan watched from afar. After talking for a couple of minutes Gabriel turned around and approached Negan.
"Will you help me sort out the food they brought?" he asked.
"So they found food," stated Negan.
"Yeah, they did," said Gabriel still waiting for the answer.
"Sure, why not," said Negan and followed Gabriel to the hall. Gabriel gave Negan a pen and paper to record the amount of food and distribute it equally. The group arrived and handed them their bags. Maggie was still killing Negan with her eyes, which made him feel uncomfortable, so he quickly turned away. He arranged the bags, then grabbed the pen and paper to calculate. He noticed Maggie was talking to a group of people and they kept glancing at him. "Great, more friends of Maggie" – he thought, frowning his eyebrows concerned. He turned his eyes back at the food in front of him and started calculating with Gabriel.
…
After Negan finished sorting food out, Gabriel thanked him for his help. Negan headed home, while Gabriel stayed at the hall for a meeting. Negan stepped through the front door, then closed it behind himself.
"Quinn?" he asked.
"I'm here," I said. I was in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water.
"Didn't see you. Hi," said Negan.
"Hi," I said as I put down the glass. "How was everything going?"
"Your friends came back safe and sound. I helped Gabe portion the food out. This is our share," he said as he handed over a couple of silver bags.
"What on earth is this?" I asked taking a closer look.
"Don't know, probably something soldiers used to eat," he said.
"Better than nothing, I guess," I said as I put them in a cupboard.
"How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Better. Much better," I said. He was avoiding my eyes. "What about you?" I asked. Finally, he looked me in the eye, shrugged his shoulder. "What's wrong?" I asked as I stepped closer to him.
"Maggie brought more of her friends. They were staring at me. I didn't like it, that's all," he said. I exhaled sharply.
"I won't let anyone hurt you," I said. "Gabriel and Carol are on our side too."
He turned his eyes at the ground, fidgeting with his key, thinking. I stepped in front of him and caressed his cheek. He looked at me with his beautiful eyes. I smiled at him slightly. He smiled slightly too.
"What would I do without you?" he asked as he embraced me. He pecked my cheek. We were staying like that for a couple of minutes, it felt so good to hug him. Then we heard a knock on the door. I opened it and saw Carol standing there.
"Hi! Come in!" I said. Carol stepped through the door and I closed it.
"I'm coming from the meeting. The food we brought is only enough for a week. Maggie suggested one more place to look for food, but it's dangerous and we don't know how to get there. We don't have a map," Carol recounted.
"Are you kidding?" asked Negan.
"No," said Carol frowning her eyebrows.
"Where is it they want to go?" I asked.
"DC. You know the way?" asked Carol. I shrugged my shoulder, but Negan became tense.
"I know the way. But I'm not going," he stated.
"Why not?" Carol asked disapprovingly.
"You know what this is all about. Maggie will be looking for every opportunity to kill me," he said grumpily.
"That's not going to happen. I'll go with you and protect you from her," I stated. Negan looked me in the eye for a long minute.
"Are you sure? Carol said it's dangerous," said Negan, examining me with his eyes.
"We have to go," I said.
"Alright, we need food… I guess it can't be helped," he said surrendering.
"I'll tell them you know the way," said Carol and left.
Negan leaned his back against the wall and let out a sigh, wiped his eyes, he was frustrated.
"She is not going to kill you. She wants to get to DC for food, she will not kill the only person who knows the way," I said.
"Am I really the only person who knows the way? Or they want to drag me into this because I'm expendable?" he asked disappointed.
"I'll go with you and we will get through this together," I stated confidently. He hesitated for a moment, then nodded resigned.
"Alright," he said.
It was settled.
