"Sit down, I need to see you. Take off your T-shirt." Caroline told Klaus as he slowly returned from the bathroom (he refused Caroline's help at movement). The empty pancake plate was on the nightstand.

"Yes Ma'am."

Caroline laughed softly. She was already feeling extremely relaxed around Klaus, as if she had known him for a lifetime. She had also noticed his mood swings; his anger evaporating within minutes...he was probably too tired for that too. He was tired, that was the truth. He was tired of the world and of his illness, which devoured him a little every moment...the pain could be seen in his eyes.

He took off his red shirt, and Caroline placed the tetescope on his chest. She noticed several wounds stretching along and across Niklaus' entire back. They weren't too obvious, but they weren't invisible either. Despite her instinct, Caroline didn't say anything, Klaus could tell her if he wanted to, when he was ready.

"Inhale and exhale."

His heartbeat was a little weak, but nothing too worrying. Moving behind him, Caroline moved the tetescope to Klaus's back, and he shuddered at the cold sensation on his scarred skin. Then Caroline took Klaus's temperature, checked his blood pressure, took his blood sugar, and adjusted a few more things on the machines, took the plate from the nightstand, and held out a hand.

"Can I get you down or do you want to sleep more?" Caroline asked Klaus, now dressed in a pair of comfortable trousers and a red T-shirt.

"I'm coming down, I can't leave Kol alone in the living room for too long, the last time he was blowing it up." Klaus replied with a hesitant smile.

They went downstairs, Caroline leaning Klaus' weight on her to the ground floor, helping him to go downstairs without too much effort. They found Kol in the living room with a banana cake in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. When he saw them coming, he moved from the couch to an armchair to let Klaus lie down. Klaus covered himself with a blanket and growled when he could not find a comfortable position at first.

"Wow, Nik, you're so bright today! It's like a ray of sunshine!"

"Shut up, Kol."

"How...how do you feel, Nik?"

"Tired, very tired."

Klaus closed his eyes and rested his head on the pillows, and Caroline arranged his blanket, asking at the same time:

"Are you feeling bad?"

"I don't know what it's like not to feel bad, love."

"Stay stretched, it will help your body temperature adjust."

"So, Caroline, right? I hope my brother hasn't caused you too many headaches so far." Kol said to her.

"Oh, no, no such thing."

"Too bad."

"Kol." Klaus replied, his eyes still closed, but awake.

"Come on, Nik, all I'm doing is trying to put a smile on your face. Nik."

Klaus opened his mouth to answer, but quickly closed it back, then looked at his watch, with a twinkle in his eye.

"Wait, Kol, don't you have classes?" he asked.

"It's almost the end of the year, Nik, it doesn't matter."

"Kol, are you skipping school?" Caroline asked, with her face surprised but amused at the same time.

Klaus snored lightly on the couch as Caroline put another blanket on his back, then made sure the medicines were given correctly. Kol had left a few hours ago, waiting for Klaus to fall asleep first so that they wouldn't have to say goodbye to each other, with the bitter thought that it might be forever. So far she knew of three of Klaus's siblings, but considering the pictures from the proms and elegant events, he had more. Looking at her sleeping patient, a pit formed in Caroline's stomach, and if she had been someone else, she might have even started crying. Klaus had so much potential... It was one of the hardest parts of her job: knowing that the patient you're going to approach is on their deathbed, and it's your job to keep their last months as comfortable as possible. And that's exactly what Caroline will do for Klaus.

Sounds of soles were heard from the hallway, which made Caroline come back from her mind. When she came out of the living room to check on where the sounds were coming from, she saw Elijah putting on his coat hanger. He must have just walked in the door from work. When he saw her, a friendly smile appeared on his face.

"Good afternoon, miss Forbes, how's Niklaus?"

"He sleeps on the couch, I didn't know if I should have moved him to bed or let him sleep in the living room, I hope it's okay. Otherwise, his condition remained stable. Kol was here this morning. "

"Suppose he skipped classes again? I'm going to start sending Rebekah at his school with him just to make sure he gets into class." Elijah said in an unusually joking way, considering his words. "Can I see Nik?"

Caroline and Elijah went back into the living room, sitting on either side of Niklaus, but immediately noticed that he was in pain, even asleep, it could be seen all over his face. Caroline moved closer to him and tried to wake him up.

"Klaus! Klaus, wake up."

"W-what ...?" Klaus's eyes widened, his face still tense with pain.

"Do you want me to increase your dose of pain medication?" Niklaus nodded wearily, and Caroline did as she was told.

After a while, Klaus was asleep again, this time relaxed, and Elijah was holding his hand. The brown-haired man inhaled, his hands still trembling.

"When I found out about Niklaus' illness, I promised myself that I would be there for him, always and forever." Elijah said, sighing. Did he feel guilty about starting work again, leaving Klaus alone with her? Caroline didn't know exactly what to say, but she knew she had to say something, reassuring him that he was there for his brother...that Klaus would be fine...but the second part would be a lie.

"And you are. I haven't known you for a long time, Elijah, but it's obvious how much you care about your brother, how much you love him. You are there for him when he needs you and you will continue to be."
