Summary: When nurse Caroline Forbes is hired by Elijah Mikaelson to take care of his younger brother with a terminal illness, Klaus, she didn't expect to fall in love with the charismatic blonde.
A: I don't own TVDU or any character. Excuse me, my english isn't good. I'm sorry this chapter is so short.
It was six in the morning. Elijah was dressing Klaus before going to work, who was slowly losing the strength to do it himself.
"Here you go, and the pants, you're done."
"What?"
Klaus' face showed pure confusion.
"You are done dressing." Elijah said in a worried voice, stroking Klaus' forehead.
"I'm sleepy...I slept ten hours yesterday, but I'm still sleepy..."
"It's alright, remember what Marcel said: you might have an increased need for sleep. If you want you can go back to bed, and we'll wait for Caroline together."
Klaus just nodded and let Elijah pick him up and lay him on the bed excactly when Rebekah walked into the room.
"Good morning nature!" She said with a bright smile.
"Little sister...I don't understand how you can be so cheerful in the morning." Klaus said, hiding his head under the covers.
Rebekah just smiled, running her hand through his hair.
"Elijah, I'll stay with him until Caroline comes, you can go."
"I can stay alone for more than 5 minutes, Bekah!"
Klaus rolled in bed, turning from side to side, not looking so skinny for the first time in months.
"It's not comfortable..." he said after a while. It was happening exactly what Marcellus told them will happen soon, the next stage to death.
"I will inflate your pillows and ask Caroline to help you move to the couch, maybe you will be more comfortable there." Elijah said.
He inflated his brother's pillows and helped him down even lower, hoping he would feel better then, exactly when Caroline opened the door.
"Morning, Elijah, Rebekah. Klaus, how are you feeling?"
"I'm fine."
"Honest"
Klaus paused, then said:
"It hurts more than you could ever imagine...my chest, my head, my stomach...everything hurts, Caroline." he had spoken quickly, without even realizing it, and his eyes were watering.
"It's alright, I'll give you some painkillers and you'll feel better after you sleep." Caroline told him worriedly.
"I'm going to have palliative surgery next week, Freya says it will help me a lot with the pain, I hope she's right..."
Rebekah lay down on the bed next to her brother and hugged him. Elijah closed the curtains, blocking out the sunlight and leaving a more comfortable sleeping atmosphere for Klaus in the room.
"I have to go, but I'll see you at 4 pm. I love you, more than you could ever imagine." Elijah said, kissing Klaus on the forehead and nose, then walking out of the room.
Klaus had raised his head slightly when he felt his brother's lips on his forehead and then lowered it again as he left. The blond sick man paused, then said:
"Caroline...do you think you could help me walk around the gardens? There are a lot of trees and it's quite dangerous.
"Sure, Klaus, no problem."
Klaus stopped for a second, took a deep breath and continued:
"..I will soon enter the active stage..."
"I know…" the blonde woman said quickly. And she knew...she knew it too well...his body would shut down, his blood pressure would drop, the patient's movement will slow down, his extremities would become cold to the touch, maybe he'll get spots on his hands and feet, he wouldn't be able to swallow anymore...
"Caroline…?" Rebekah's voice was small, nothing like the young woman Caroline had known. "About what I told you yesterday...I don't know...I was so young, I barely remember..." Rebekah added in a whisper.
And Elijah was screaming and begging him to stop, but he wouldn't…Nik was passed out on the floor, his legs pressed to his chest, his hand was in the wrong direction...he wasn't moving.
"I don't remember much."
I remember everything.
"It was a long time ago."
He was bleeding. He was screaming.
Rebekah was thinking the truth, but the words were too painful to speak.
"It's alright, Rebekah...it was a long time ago, I understand..." said the Forbes woman, still skeptical. What Rebekah told her yesterday was extremely accurate, and now she regretted telling her what had happened to Klaus?
"It's just...our family loves betrayal. Our mother did…and so did Finn." Rebekah said with cold eyes, still stroking the head of Klaus who was only half present.
"Finn?"
"Our oldest brother, he wanted us to admit Nik to a hospice. Anyway, I should be getting ready to leave for college, but I will be back earlier today to see Nik, today will be his first appointment with his masseuse this afternoon. Her name was Aurora De Martel, I think."
The massage will help Klaus with pain management and emotional and spiritual support...it had to, if not...it was his last chance. So Caroline looked at the man in the hospital bed, with his eyes only half open...she knew he could see her. His forehead was tense and his cheeks warm, so the young blonde woman pressed the button on his IV and let some more fluid flow into her patient's body, sending him to sleep, while the medicine was making it's job.
"He's gone, but she's not." Klaus said before he fell asleep.
