a/n: Well, this is just an idea I had, and since I was struggling with a fight scene in one of the Spotlight Oneshots I'm writing for "A Girl and Her Bike", I figured I might as well get this on paper.

TW: Implied suicide attempt.

Prologue: Once Upon a Time

Long ago, two races ruled over Earth: humans and monsters.

One day, a war broke out between the two races.

After a long battle, the humans were victorious.

They sealed the monsters underground with a magic spell.

The mountain came to be known as Mount Ebott, and it was said that those who climbed it would never return.

It was for that reason that a child scaled the mountain.

Chloé Bourgeois did not know how long she had been climbing. Only that her lungs burned as much as her eyes by the time she took shelter in a cave, leaving the evening sun and the deceptive charm behind.

A "gift" from a liar, a sick joke.

"Ridiculous, utterly ridiculous," she muttered, "I can't believe I was actually dumb enough to think I had earned her love." She had run out of tears to shed hours ago, before she'd even reached the foot of the mountain, and the adrenaline was already beginning to wear off, the strength draining from her arms and legs as she stumbled forwards.

They don't need me, they have Zoé now, she thought, Who needs such a difficult, worthless little brat when they can have the perfect, talented, exceptional Zoé?

"Everyone will be happier once I'm-" one of her feet met open air, and the mayor's daughter shrieked as she disappeared into the hole she had not seen in the darkness.

THUD!

And thus, a human fell underground.

a/n: So... Turns out that telling a girl to bond with her adoptive mother over how horrible they both are leads to some issues.

I was inspired to write this by the "sads the skelecog" miniboss in Toontown Corporate Clash (which had me thinking about Undertale again), plus some discussion of the upcoming "Penalteam" episode of Miraculous Ladybug.

In short, everything just lined up perfectly for this to happen.
