That following Monday, Jay walked into the district, feeling a lot better. Platt saw Jay walk up the stairs and decided to give him a hard time, "Well, if isn't Mr. Wisconsin."
"Good Morning, Sergeant Platt," Jay replied, chuckling at his new nickname.
"When's the next time I can see your sister?" Platt asked.
"Uh, I told her she could come by later this week if she wanted," Jay said, "But knowing her, she will probably come by this afternoon. Wait, why?"
"No reason," Platt said.
"Uh-huh, sure," Jay said sarcastically as he walked away, "No reason."
Jay walked up to Intelligence and saw that he was the only one in the bullpen. Antonio, Voight, and two other people, who Jay couldn't tell who they were, were in Voight's office. They seemed to be arguing about something. Jay went to his desk and got started on paperwork.
A little bit later, Al somehow appeared behind Jay.
"Hey, kid," Alvin greeted, "How are you feeling?"
"I'm good. I hate taking time off, but that was refreshing." Jay replied.
"Yeah, I heard last week, Maddie was texting Antonio," Alvin said.
"Uh, yeah, she did," Jay said chuckling, "I slept most of the day and Maddie took advantage of that and decided to talk about me. Wait, how do you know Maddie was texting Antonio?" He really hoped Antonio wouldn't tell anyone what he found out about him.
"Erin was pretty pissed and snapped at Antonio about it," Alvin watched to see Jay's reaction, he could see Jay was slightly worried. "He just said that you and Maddie have the same sense of humor."
Jay let out an inaudible sigh. Antonio had kept Jay's past a secret.
Just then, Erin walked into the bullpen and didn't acknowledge Jay's presence.
After everyone was in the bullpen, Voight, Antonio, and two unidentified men stepped out of Voight's office. Jay caught a "This is stupid." from Antonio as he walked to his desk.
Voight nodded his good morning to Al and said, "The 21st district has been selected for everyone in it to have a psych profile-"
Voight was cut off with a groan from Jay.
"Something you would like to say, Halstead?" Voight asked. Since Jay admitted to being in the Army, Voight tried to learn everything about it. He had learned that Jay had to have psych profiles done every two months and he had to go to a therapist after every time he shot an offender because Jay, apparently, didn't have PTSD, unlike the majority of vets.
"Yeah, I do," Jay noticed everyone looking at him. "Psych profiles take forever and they're useless. Especially, when you have to get one done regularly. It's not like PTSD is going to suddenly pop up out of nowhere."
"You have to get one regularly? Why?" Erin asked. She was still a little pissed at Jay but felt bad for him.
"Yeah, every two months and I have to see a therapist after every time I shoot an offender. And it's always the same questions. I could probably be the one who asks the questions." Jay stopped his ranting before he admitted something that he didn't want to.
"And you have to do this, why?" Ruzek asked.
"Because a very low percentage of vets who served in Afghanistan and Iraq aren't diagnosed with PTSD, and I just so happen to be one of that small percentage." Jay made eye contact with Antonio and had a look that said, you say anything, they'll never find your body. "The Ivory Tower feels the only way I could do my job is if they 'check up' on me every so often."
"Well, then why don't you show us how it's done," Alvin said smirking.
"Because, O, everyone needs to do it by themselves," Jay said.
"Well, now that we've discussed Halstead's reasons for hating psych profiles, let's get to work. We have a case." He turned to two unidentified men and told them to set up in the roll-up.
Voight turned to the unit and said, "Ok, we need to head to the crime scene." He turned to Jay and Erin, "Do I need to split you two up?"
They both looked at each other and replied with "No, sir."
"Ok, let's go."
On the way to the crime scene, Jay and Erin were sitting in silence.
"Why didn't you trust me?" Erin asked out of the blue.
"What?" Jay was surprised.
"Why didn't you trust me to help you or to tell me about your family?" Erin elaborated.
"I do trust you-" Jay started.
"Could've fooled me," Erin mumbled under her breath but Jay heard it.
"No, seriously, Erin, I do trust you, it's just I guess I'm used to doing some things by myself. My own siblings don't know everything about me," Jay said.
"Like what?"
"Why I got discharged," Jay replied quietly.
Erin briefly looked over to Jay. He was staring off into space. "Why were you discharged?"
"That's classified," Jay said. Erin huffed and rolled her eyes. "But what I can tell you is that when I came home, I was severely injured and sick. I had three bones in my left leg broken and one in my right. I couldn't walk for months. Four ribs were cracked, my jaw and left shoulder were dislocated, and I had a severe concussion. I also had hypothermia and pneumonia."
Erin couldn't imagine Jay so hurt. "I know you probably can't tell me but why were you so injured?"
"Sorry, no, I can't," Jay said. They had arrived at the crime scene.
The case was just an armed robbery but an Alderman's wife was injured so Intelligence was working it. It was a relatively easy case and they were finished by mid-afternoon. The team was working on paperwork while they were being interviewed for their psyche profiles. Around 5 o'clock Jay got a call.
"Detective Halstead," Jay answered.
"Why hasn't my daughter stopped talking about you since she came home last night?" A very recognizable voice was on the other end of the call.
Jay rolled his eyes. "Probably because your golden child lied to you about going to Wisconsin."
"But who put William up to it?" Jay bit back a laugh, Will hated being called William. "Was it my disappointment of a son who threatened him?"
Now, Jay was trying not to draw attention to himself getting angry. "Your disappointment of a son was teamed up against by your golden child and your daughter. And, Dad, next time, if you don't Mads talking about me, actually let her see her family, instead of letting her see Will and only letting me see her on holidays and Mom's death day." By the end, Jay was quietly angry. He was glaring daggers at his coffee mug on his desk.
"You're lucky that I let you see her." Jay's breath started picking up and he started getting Erin's and Antonio's attention.
"You're lucky I don't arrest you for negligence of a tender age child." Jay smashed the phone back onto his desk. He was gathering stares but he just waved them off.
The rest of the shift went by quietly. Jay just wanted to drink himself to sleep. He hated talking to his dad for this reason alone; every time he does, he's in a pissed-off mood until he can get to the alcohol.
Ok, that's it for today! I hope all of you have a great week!
