Summary: Lucy realizes that Susan
has forgotten Narnia.
She
puts on her make-up
The
same way she did yesterday
Hoping
everything's the same
But
everything has changed
In my
mind
Everything
we did was right
Open
your eyes, I'll still be by your side
How
could I ever have been so blind?
Don't leave me now
Lucy Pevensie sat and watched as her older sister put on her make up just like she did every single evening she would go to a party. It was always the same order. First it was the powder, then the rouge, then the eye shadow liner and mascara. Susan would then go to her purse and pull out a tube of bright red lipstick and make her lips nice and colored. It was the same routine Susan preformed three or four nights a week.
Each time Lucy sat on her bed watching her sister get ready for yet another party Lucy thought she might remember; that she may not get to the red lipstick and go wash her face. Then it would be like when they were there when everything seemed like it was right and safe, not when everything was wrong and uncomfortable. Lucy would even settle for Susan being like Mum when she got ready for a date with Father. Mum would squirt a bit of perfume on Lucy and kiss the top on her head as she reminded Lucy to listen to her elder siblings. Susan just acted like Lucy didn't even exist.
The ritual of getting ready for a grand ball in Narnia was something Lucy missed terribly. Susan and Lucy would both get ready in Susan's chambers. No one helped them. They helped the other. It was their way of sisterly bonding. They didn't use makeup. Lucy was far too young and Susan was more than pretty with out it. They would help each other into their gowns and Lucy would brush out Susan's hair for her because she liked it down as she danced. Then as Lucy sat cross legged on Susan's chair in front of the mirror and watch Susan do something with her hair. Each time Lucy's hair was something different. It was a game they would play. It amused their brothers, and the beavers, and Mr. Tumnus.
When her brothers would come to escort them down Peter would pick up Lucy and spin her around and compliment her hair making her giggle. Edmund would scold Peter for ruining Susan's hair, say they both looked beautiful and take Lucy's arm to escort her as Peter took Susan's.
That didn't happen anymore. Now Susan would get ready tell Lucy not to wait up for her and head downstairs. There she would send the boys away so they wouldn't torment her latest beau. Lucy would hear them go upstairs and pause at her door. Then go to their room.
Tonight was different. She realized why they stopped. Susan no longer believed in Narnia. Lucy couldn't believe how stupid she was for not seeing it sooner. This person was not here sister. It was the shell of her sister. As Lucy cried on her bed she vowed to try and help Susan anyway she could.
This time her brother's walked in her room. Edmund comforted her by saying he understood and they would get through this. Peter hugged her and complimented her hair to get her to smile. They remembered. They would all help Susan.
