Summary: Harry gives something back to Draco that Lucius took so long ago.
Draco had always wanted a puppy. Ever since he could think (and he was sure even beyond that) he'd felt this yearning for his own special companion, the wizard's best friend. With one he hadn't known hot to articulate himself yet, with two his father wanted to top a tiny puppy with a tiny pony, with three Draco got his wish, and with four Lucius took it away again.
Muggle and Wizard children had many things in common, especially their notorious hang to touch anything and everything to get to know it. Draco, despite Lucius' best attempts, was no different. He sucked on his toes; he pulled at anything in his reach and, later when he was able to toddle already, he hunted for moving objects.
Narcissa was enchanted by her son's behaviour, and only when the three year old boy focused his attention solely onto the examination of his new puppy Love did she change her mind. Draco was an infant himself and expressed his (not yet repressed) feelings in the only way he knew how: he pulled and tugged at his puppy's fur, smooched and bit its moist nose and generally did everything to encourage his pet to hit back. And even though Love never showed any signs thereof, Lucius saw it as his duty to show Draco i>his /i> love.
"Puppy!" Draco cried, slamming his fists onto the floor repeatedly. "Wanna back!" He turned his accusing gaze to Lucius who'd given Love to and now taken it away from him.
Narcissa went to the flailing boy and took him in her arms. "It's for your best," she tried to console him. "Shh..." The dog would've grown quickly, and Draco's enthusiastic way could have presented a danger for the little boy that no one had thought of before. Now Love's teeth were still tiny and her jaws were weak, but that would have changed. Narcissa stroked Draco's soft hair, conveying her strong motherly feelings.
Draco, however, only had eyes for his father stalking out of the chamber, levitating his puppy in front of him. The door closed, and Draco hated green.
When he opened them again, he loved that colour.
"Happy Birthday, love," Harry said, presenting his gift to his boyfriend.
It was packed by himself, quite obviously, and Draco's heart warmed at the thought. He ran his fingers along the edge of the wooden box, noting Harry's mixed emotions mirroring out of the corner of his eyes. Draco touched his hand briefly, before going back to opening his present. From inside - the box with holes, Draco noted belatedly - two glittering eyes looked at him, and Harry started his explanations about how it seemed the right time for a puppy, and how Draco would love this one, and-
Draco lifted the plushie out of the box, examining it closely. He turned it over, stroked the fluffy fur, and smelt the clean toy experientially. Then he turned his glittering eyes to Harry and smiled. "Thank you."
