Part 5:
Hi guys Sorry I had a story in mind, I just couldn't write it until now hope you all enjoy it.
Okay so the timeline is after the last season, when Harvey and Donna had moved to Seattle and are living at Mike and Rachel's place for a few days till their place is ready. Like previous parts this too will mostly be from Rachel's view about Mike's relationship with Donna and especially Harvey.
It has already been afternoon and Mike has been buzzing around the house despite multiple attempts of Rachel's to get him to relax and eat his lunch. Harvey and Donna were coming today and Mike wanted everything to be perfect.
Well that's not true Mike had been buzzing around since he came back from New York, well it was his dream come true Harvey and Donna got married she can't believe she missed it but well what could she do. They went shopping and had purchased gifts for the couple's new place in Seattle and she was happy but Mike was on some other level it seemed like Christmas came early for him. She couldn't stop smiling looking at him, so excited, so innocent but that does not defy the fact that she is also extremely worried for him and also what would happen when they would come to know about the truth.
"Mike everything is perfect, come on please see I am hungry too now" Mike sighed and sat down for lunch with Rachel she was right he had to have lunch, but he just couldn't keep it down Harvey and Donna were coming to live with him. They had barely finished lunch when they heard the cab pulling up in front of their house. The young couple immediately moved out to welcome the much awaited guests.
" Harvey" Mike cheerily squealed, going on hugging the older man as he got out of the cab.
"How old are you again?"
"Oh a lot younger than you grandpa"
"Well we gotta get your eyes tested if you think i am a grandpa. We can continue this later kid, let's help the ladies with the bags first."
Mike nodded and walked towards the bags but not before giving a right hug and cheery welcome to Donna.
It was evening by the time Harvey and Donna had freshened up, while Mike and Rachel helped them properly unpack and settle in the extra bedroom, and prepared the dinner. They all had an early dinner and had now made themselves comfortable in the living room. They had now been chatting about the events here and there, the wedding, Donna showed Rachel some pictures, it all felt so right. It had been some time when Rachel felt Mike leaning on her as she looked at him. He definitely was content with the day but extremely tired. Their eyes met and he gave her a small smile.
She carefully slithered her arm around his shoulder so that he was more comfortable as he did the same, the conversations continued. After some time Harvey remembered something and excused himself and came back with a bottle of scotch and four glasses.
" Look what I got kid, your favourite. Today we will make this a new start" He exclaimed as he started pouring it into the glasses.
"Uhh.. umm.. Harv.." Mike started uncomfortably as the others looked up at him. " Umm.. I guess I'm gonna skip it today." The older couple instantly frowned as a look of understanding washed over her face.
" What is it?" Harvey asked.
" Actually..." Rachel started she didn't want to do this today but they will get to know so the sooner the better.
" Actually I am not in the mood for drinks today" Mike cut her. He knew she was right but he was not ready.
" Oh cut it out" Donna started. She looked at Rachel and suddenly something just pricked inside her. Something was wrong that the younger couple had been hiding. She had the tingling since they met but she chose to avoid it till now. " What is it?" She continued sharing a worried glance with her husband.
" Ok it's not Donna I know I can't lie to you, it's just there is something but I am not in the mood to talk about it today, please." Mike continued tiredly. Till now both the older members were sitting straight and they knew something was up.
" Ok you don't want to talk about whatever, it's okay, take rest for today kid" Harvey said as Mike sighed with relief. " But I think Rachel does not have any such apprehensions now, do you Rachel?"
"I..I" she looked at Harvey to her husband.
Mike sighed he knew that the older couple was stuck now Harvey would not let it go and even if he did, Donna would just magically know in the next few hours.
" Okay. If it's got to come out then it should be me. But before everything i want to clarify I wasn't hiding it i was going to tell it to you just not today" Rachel tightened her grip and the older couple leaned in listening intently, Harvey had that signature narrowed eyes stuck on Mike while Donna was just scanning both of them for the truth.
"Harvey I..I" Mike started again.
" Oh my god you are sick aren't you?" Donna's eyes suddenly widened, followed by other three in the room. Harvey looked back at the boy, his boy to confirm and one look at his face was enough to confirm his worst fear.
"What?" He managed in a hoarse tone.
" I..I was diagnosed with some issues in my heart some time back the condition was their apparently from my birth, something known as VSD but couldn't be diagnosed earlier, well not surprising the kind of doctors i visited my whole life." Mike laughed dryly looking at nothing in particular. " Remember the asthma well that may have provided it a good cover to hide, anyways I have grown so has this condition and I have developed something known as Eisenmenger syndrome, doctors have been trying to control it with the use of medications and regular therapy but things are not looking very good so they have suggested lung transplant surgery along with surgery to treat the heart, well i am still on the list and we are waiting for donor, which i am sure we will get soon. Doctors told me to take it a little easy till then '' Mike nearly mumbled the last part and the room felt silent.
After some time Mike could not bear the silence and went and kneeled in front of the older couple.
" Hey, guys I.. it will be okay" he whispered slowly with a small smile Rachel teared up on seeing him trying to take care of everyone even in this situation. Donna took him in an embrace still crying.
" But you were with us 4 days back, we..we got married and you were there." Harvey said, looking at him still a little dazed.
Mike looked back at Rachel; this was the part he hoped never came up. He just remained silent. But this had clearly struck the chord in older couple.
" Mike, when did this happen?" Donna narrowed her eyes.
"Donna this…I…" Mike fumbled he knew this was not going to go well.
"Mike, I want a clear answer," Harvey growled.
"Harvey, look it does not matter.. you guys needed me and I missed you so I just came."
"That's not what I asked"
" and it's a good thing I guess as well I didn't want to miss the weddings"
"Mikeee" everyone shivered a bit in the room.
"1 and a half month back" Mike mumbled almost in reflex
"What?" Both Donna and Harvey shouted.
Rachel suddenly came in to save her husband. " Harvey Donna please let's sit, we can talk please."
"What do you want us to talk, he….." Harvey started, "and the nerve on him he is not ready to tell us anything now, were you ever gonna tell us?".
"You didn't think we should know"
"No I… Harvey please I would have told" Mike was almost crying
"When ? after the surgery? We don't matter enough do we ?" Harvey's voice echoed through the hall
That was it that was the limit of Mike's patience. Both the men were shouting at the top of their voices, now tears were rolling down Mike's cheeks. She tried to jump in but no one was listening to her.
" I would never have had the surgery without you, you hear that?"
"Oh i dont hear that enough"
" I never .."
"And why should I believe that"
" Because I never wanted to die alone without my family." Sudden silence enveloped the place only small "do you understand that I couldn't die without meeting you, I came to New York to tell you and bring you with me whether permanently or not I just wanted you there with me with Rachel I just can't…." MIke broke down and stumbled back. Harvey suddenly caught him and hugged him tightly.
"Die..?" of course he had heard everything before, he just didn't comprehend it fully. Mike was dying, his Mike, and he was angry he…
"But you said the surgery can.." Harvey separated from the hug but asked, still cupping his face.
"Its a dangerous surgery Harv…it's scary I wouldn't do it alone… I couldn't do it alone.." Harvey hugged him even more tightly. " It won't be scary. I will be there with you and you are not dying. Do you hear that?" Harvey said, still crying. Donna joined in the hug running her hand on Mike's back and through his hairs whispering sweet nothings. They were there like this for some time.
Rachel knew this moment as ugly as it was needed. But she was worried for Mike this wasn't good for him he looked exhausted still panting heavily. She gave him his pills and made him comfortable on the couch half hugging him he leaned on her more than he would have liked. Harvey sat on the other side he clearly can't let go off Mike. After some time they were sitting and talking.
"A month and a half back Mike was working when he collapsed in the office we took him to the hospital and where we got to know about his condition" harvey started to say something but Rachel answered " Mike was in the hospital for 2 days and we wanted to call you we did in fact called the office when we came to know all that was going on in New York and we were not sure maybe this all could have been just controlled by the meds. So we decided to tell you whenever we meet you next in person."
"We have met twice after that" Harvey growled.
"Yeah, the first time your mom had just died and next….."
"And the surgery?" Donna interjected.
"The surgery…we… the doctor told us sometime ago… Mike..we didn't want to tell you on the phone so we just and then you called that you needed help and we asked the doc… he came there."
"Mike wasn't cleared to travel was he?" Donna started the younger couple knew there was no way out
"And still you went," Harvey growled.
"How could he not, it was you who needed help," Rachel jumped.
"And you let him?" Donna asked, now turning to Rachel.
"How could I not if he did not go it wouldn't be the Mike I married one with the large heart right there on his sleeve, if he can go to lengths for unknown people, then this was his family" She smiled, pulling him closer while he dropped a small peck on her forehead.
" Aww.. you're both lovable idiots." Harvey rebuked lightly; he wanted to get angry but Donna had said no through her eyes.
"If you had just told us."
" I would have, I was going to after the case, I came to your office remember but then I figured it would be better when you came here." Mike replied
Harvey sighed.
"So this…." Harvey started
They all talked for hours, Harvey and Donna wanted to know everything about this disease and whatever the doctor said. By the time they finished it had been late Mike had already succumbed to the exhaustion and slept. She wanted to wake him but Harvey stopped her. He picked him and took him to the bed and tucked him in, Donna helped him.
She could see the love and concern in the older couple's eyes. She knew they would get angry, like she knew Harvey would cry tonight when no one will see him, just as she knew they won't sleep for the next few days researching, just as she knew Harvey would make ends meet to ensure best treatment for Mike. She so loved the way they loved Mike, and sometimes envy it too. The way they cared about him Mike was not the orphan he was. He had a family for him. Some one might question how come she let mike go to new york but she knew it was important that he went. The love they had for each other would not have let Mike live in peace. The same love that would have let Harvey and Donna leave everything and move to Seattle long before had they known. The love that led her to believe that everything would be okay. The love that was so pure, so pious, so selfless, that didn't require any name. The love she was just happy witnessing, the love she wished she shared.
