Chapter three
The sickness
Rex looks at Adira who is in her sweatshirt and sighs. Adira looks at him with a curious expression on her face before she says "X." "I am fine kid I was just sighing" Rex replies realizing that he scared her because she did not know why he was doing that. Adira does not respond, and Rex assumes that she is trying to understand why he sighed. "Adira it is nothing that you did wrong that made me sigh, people sigh just to sigh and that's what I did" Rex says. Adira nods and looks at him with a smile on his face, he smiles back at her. Looking at the clock he sees that it is four o clock, he gets up from the couch and walks to the kitchen to start making dinner for the two of them. He decides to make pasta with turkey and chicken, and to make a chesses sauce. He gets out a large pot, adds water to it, and sets it on the oven on a medium heat. While that is heating up, he chops up the turkey and chicken, and after he is done the pot is boiling and to the pot, he adds what is left in the box which should be enough for the two of them tonight with a little left over for breakfast if Adira wants it. he guesses that the noodles will not take more than ten minutes so while they are cooking, he gets to work on the cheese sauce, melting down cheddar cheese and adding a tiny bit of milk to it until it goes into a liquid, he moves the sauce to a slow heat and checks on of the noodles and discovers that they are all cooked, he grabs the pot with the potholders and a colander, and he pours out the noodles, he puts some in a bowl of Adira adding the cooked meat and pouring the sauce over the top of it then he does the same for himself. He heads to the table and sets the bowls down and then gets a fork for both him and Adira. Once that is done, he says "Adira food is ready" she nods before getting off the couch and she slowly limps over to the table and sits down in a chair. "Good girl" says Rex "I bet it feels a lot better having the stiches out of your legs and you being able to walk right" "S" says Adira in response. Rex smiles upon realizing that she said yes. "Ok Adira than let us start eating" he said, Adira smiles and nods, before getting the pasta around her fork and blowing gently on it, to cool it down before taking a bite, "is it good" asked Rex, Adira turns to him with a smile before saying, quietly "s."
Rex watches her through the meal and notices that she is gently swinging her legs back and forth, Rex can feel a smile on his face, and he starts to dig into his meal. After a few minutes Adira is done eating and she heads into the kitchen while slowly limping Kix told me that she will limp for a while because she is not use to moving her legs and she has not used her legs for ten weeks now so I know that they probably will hurt for a while even though she does not say anything and is putting on a brave face and Is being brave for me, but hopefully she learns how to speak soon enough even though I am keeping track of it, just in case I need someone to watch Adira though I do not think that will happen for a while thought Rex. "Adira, do you need help with cleaning your dish" asked Rex, "S" said Adira, Rex walks into the kitchen and stands behind Adira and gently grabs the plate from her hands and washes it for her and then hands it back to her and says "Adira please put your dishes into the dishwasher" "S" says Adira with a smile on her face, while putting her dish in the dishwasher, Rex smiles while looking at the clock and is surprised to see that it is already five thirty at night. Rex heads back to the dining room and finishes his meal, vaguely aware that Adira is slowly walking back to the table. Once he is done eating, he hears Adira saying "X" looking down at her he sees that Adira is holding out her hands and is looking at the plate.
He smiles upon realizing that Adira wants to help him with his plate. "Let me wash it for you since you are not tall enough to reach the sink yet" rex says. After he is done washing it, he hands it to Adira, and Adira puts it in the dishwasher to be washed. "So, Adira what do you want to do now we can read if you want to, I can find something on the holo tv for you, or we can just chill until it is time for sleep. Adira looks at him and says "d." Rex is unsure what she wants but asks "you want to read" Adira smiles and vigorously nods. "Ok Adira goes put on some pj's and then meet me back on the couch," Adira nods and slowly limps toward the closet and get out some pj's, but Rex cannot tell what they are from where he is in the dining room, and after that she heads into the fresher to get dressed. Once the fresher door closes, Rex heads to the couch and sits down on it while waiting for Adira. I can get dressed for bed myself once I put her down for sleep, assuming she does not put her arms around my neck if she does that then it will be more difficult for me to slip away to change my clothes, while he is in deep thought he gets interrupted out of his thoughts by a weight on his right side, looking at the side he can see that Adira is on his side and is wearing a tank top and a pair of sweat pants and is looking at him. Rex smiles and then realizes that he left his data pad in his room. "I will be right back" he says to Adira but before he can get up Adira has directed her gaze toward his room, and has her right hand reached out, she must be trying to use the force she has not used it in the ten weeks that we have been back from the planet that we found her on thinks Rex.
Suddenly his data pad comes flying out of his room and into Adira's hand, and once it is in her hand, she looks exhausted leaning her head against the back of the couch. "Thank you for doing that Adira though there was no reason for you to tire yourself out when I was going to get it anyway" Rex said while getting his data pad from Adira's unresisting hand. Glancing at the clock again he sees that it is now five fifty. I have been putting Adira down to sleep at seven so I think that if I read to her until six thirty then that will give her thirty minutes to wind down for bed and hopefully fall asleep by seven Rex thinks, opening his data pad he opens it to a book about the clones and reads it " the clones DNA is from a bounty hunter called Jango Fett, each clone has there one specific clone numbers which is the number that they are given when they are born, although most clones are given a name and do not use their numbers anymore" Rex said pausing incase Adira wanted to speak. "X" said Adira, Rex looks at Adira and says "yes I am a clone and my clone number is ct-7567""They are trained on Kamino which I already told you about last night, they are trained by bounty hunters, and they are trained to fight to protect those who cannot protect themselves and the jedi, the clones fight alongside the jedi, the clones are trained also in hand-to-hand combat, and they know how to use different kinds of weapons and gun, each clone Tropper is prepared to lay down their own lives in order to save the people who cannot save them self's" he waits a few minutes and when Adira does not respond he looks down at her to see that she is fast asleep. He sets her on the bed and walks to the fresher and gets dressed for bed, his sleep clothes are no shirt and sweatpants
After that is done, he goes into the other bedroom and before he falls asleep, he looks at the clock and sees that it is now six thirty, it is too early for me to be going to sleep, I normal fall asleep at eight after making sure that Adira is fast asleep, I should get my data pad and read a book until I fall asleep with that he gets up and quietly retrieves his data pad from where he placed it on the coffee table and after checking the main bedroom and seeing that Adira is still asleep, heads back to the guest bed room and getting the sheet puts it over himself and starts reading, at eight o clock he thinks he should head to sleep so he turns off his data pad and sets it on the night stand and is about to move the sheet up to cover his shoulders, when he hears Adira saying in a nasally voice "X" he ignores it because he is not sure she spoke, he can hear quiet footsteps and he is about to get out of the bed when suddenly the door to the bedroom opens and he sits up against the headboard and looks to the door and see's Adira. "Ex, I am ld" Adira says while she is shivering. Rex without thinking gets out of the bed and goes to Adira, Rex says slowly so that Adira can understand it "Adira it is ok, I think you are just sick come here Adira, let's get the med kit and see how high your temperature is and then lets comn Kix" Adira looks at him and slowly limps into his open arms, he picks her up, walks into the guest bathroom, and sets Adira down on the counter and looks under the sink, grabs the med kit, and gets out the med scanner. He heads back to his bed and lays her down on the bed before activating the med scanner and runs it down her forehead and neck and waits for a few minutes while noticing how much sweat is running down her neck and forehead. After a few minutes, the med scanner beeps its completion
Looking down at the results it says 99.8 he grabs his comn link from the nightstand and comns Kix, he must wait a few minutes before Kix responds saying "Rex it is nine o clock why are you coming me the med lab is closed now" "it is Adira she has a fever of 99.8" "has she been throwing up" Kix asks, Rex opens his mouth to respond but before he can Adira leans off the side of the bed and throws up. "Hang on a sec Kix Adira just threw up" he can hear Adira softly crying before her shoulders launch over the bed and she throws up again. Rex approaches her and rubs his hand up and down her back saying "Shh it is ok Adira just let it out" Adira says in a weak voice "NO" before she throws up again. Rex can hear his comn link going off and he can hear Kix saying "I will be there in a few minutes I will be bring over something to help her breath and I will be bringing over some medicine" Rex is about to respond and then Adira throws up again, he runs his hand up and down her back. Rex can hear Adira softly crying and he says, "I know that it does not feel good and taste bad and it burns while coming down" Rex can hear a knock on the door and he says "it is open Kix come on In but lock the door behind you" he can hear the door opening and closing and, after a few seconds he enters the guest room and sees the two of them. Kix says "Rex do you think she can swallow any medicine, or do you think I should just inject some medicine in her?" Rex responds by saying "She has thrown up three times, I think it would be better to inject the medicine in her that is the only way she will be able to keep it down" Kix nods and gets a syringe and fills it with a pink liquid before approaching Adira and saying "Adira it is just me, Kix, I have some medicine for you I just need your arm" Adira does not respond the only thing she does is curl into a ball on the middle of the bed. Rex looks at Kix before going over to Adira before saying "come here Adira sit in my lap, arms around my neck there you go just like that" Rex nods to Kix who goes behind Rex and grabs one of Adira's arms before injecting the medication into her right arm
Adira just grunts in pain burying her head in Rex's neck. Rex runs a comforting hand up and down her back, while Adira softly whines, and then she whispers "X I am rm" while she is trying to take off her tank top but is unable to because her movements are sluggish. "Adira keeps on your tank top" said rex while gently holding her down. Adira whines and tries to struggle but after a moment she still. She is only able to breath out of her mouth, it must be because her nose is so clogged, I will tell Kix about it as soon as Rex opens his mouth to tell Kix, Kix says "I know Rex I can see it, I brought something that will help to unclogged her nose but it will only help her while it is on, and it should only last for two hours" Kix says while he goes to the living room and gets something off the couch. He appears after a minute, and he is holding a humidifier. Rex looks at it confused watching while Kix plugs it into the wall and adds something to the side and Rex watches as steam comes out. "ok" Kix started "just lay her down on the bed and the machine will do the work, I am giving you four bottles of the medicine it should last for eight hours." "Thanks, Kix" said Rex as he lays Adira down on the bed on her back and laughs quietly when she instead turns on her side. "I will clean up the vomit for you Rex but unless you want to clean it up the next time, she throws up I would put a garbage bag on either side of the bed." said Kix.
Rex nods in response and watches with satisfaction as Adira is now breathing out of her nose, I will have to set an alarm on my data pad for two hours, to change out the empty medicine and make it so she can breathe out of her nose "X" said a timid voice, Rex while turning to look at Adira says "yes." Adira reaches out her arms and says "e" "repeat that for me I did not understand that" responded Rex. "eeeee" says Adira again while she is reaching out her hands again. Rex comes closer to Adira and asks, "Ok I am closer now, now what?" Adira puts her hands on his neck and tries to pull him down, but it is not working. Rex smiles and decides to carefully go down when Adira pulls him down, Adira lets out a happy noise and snuggles deeper into Rex's neck. Rex says "Good night, Adira, sleep well" he said while gently running a hand down one of her lekku, Adira mutters something against his neck but he does not hear what she has said. When he opens his mouth to ask her what she said he sees that she is fast asleep. He smiles and after a minute fall asleep with her. I will have to call general Sky walker I told him I would be able to come and train the new shinnies but now I will not be able to I cannot leave her while she is this sick maybe if she feels better in a few days and then I will be able to help the general. He thinks before he falls into a deep sleep. He gets awakened from his sleep by his data pad going off, he sighs before getting off the bed and after making sure that Adira is still asleep, he heads to get the other medicine, he looks at the clock as he is headed back and see's that it is now ten o clock at night, I know I should not be mad at her for this she cannot be blamed for being sick and throwing up rex thought as he enters the room he can see that Adira has now turned on her right side, and he can also see that she is now only breathing out of her mouth, he puts the new medication in the machine making sure that it is all the way in before he crawls back in bed putting a blanket over Adira she whines a bit but settles back into sleep.
He repeats the process of doing the medicine four more times. He gets awakened from sleep by Adira, who is trying to get off the bed and is trying to crawl on top of Rex to get out of bed. "Morning Adira" says Rex, Adira does not respond to him her throat must be hurting to swallow, for her to not be responding to me thinks Rex, he gently pick Adira up, and heads to the kitchen to make some food for the two of them, he tries to detach Adira from around his neck but she only weakly tightens her grip around his neck, he sighs and pauses when he hears a knock on the door. He walks to the door and is surprised to see that Padme is outside the door, holding six containers of something. "Morning Captain Rex, Kix told me that Adira is not feeling well, so I brought over some chicken soup for her it is what I make for Anakin when he is not feeling well," said Padme. "Well come on in Padme" said Rex, Adira stirring a bit before falling back against his neck. "So, Rex has Adira used the force since you guys have returned from the planet" asked Padme "yes she used it last night to get my data pad for me so that I could read to her before she fell asleep" responded Rex. "You look exhausted, how much sleep did you get last night" asked Padme. "If I am being one hundred percent honest, I do not know how much sleep I got, I had to wake up every two hours to replace Adira's medicine" responded Rex. "You should give me Adira and I can make sure she eats and rest that way you can go back to sleep because to be honest you look like you are about to drop any second." said Padme, Rex looks at Padme before looking at Adira and slowly nods before gently handing off Adira to Padme. Adira just stirs a little bit before leaning her head in Padme's neck. "Now get some sleep Rex she will be fine," said Padme, Rex nods before heading into the guest bedroom
"Ok sweetie" says Padme "let us see if we can't get some food into you" she gets out one of the containers before pouring out the chicken soup into a bowl and heating it up for thirty seconds once it is done Padme grabs the bowl and a spoon and sits down on the couch. "Adira, I need you to lean back in my lap and eat something" said Padme gently. Adira nods her head not before trying to go back to Padme's neck, "I am sorry kid, but I cannot allow you to do that" says Padme. Adira tries to glare at Padme before gently moving back. "Here Adira" says Padme while she has a spoon full of soup "eat this, it is good for you while you are sick" Adira slowly opens her mouth, while Padme brings the spoon to her mouth. "Now close your mouth and swallow it" says Padme, watching as Adira does as she says but while she is swallowing there is a grimace on her face indicating that, it hurts to swallow. "I am sorry Adira, but you need to eat" say Padme. Adira shakes her head no before burying her head in Padme's neck, "come on Adira another bite and you can go back to sleep" pleads Padme, Adira does not respond and upon looking at her Padme can see that she is fast asleep. Padme sighs and leaves Adira alone on the couch and puts the soup back in the container and puts it in the fridge. She also gets a bowl of cold water and a towel; she heads back to the couch and dumps the towel in the water before gently dabbing Adira's forehead with it. Adira moans and says "ld". Padme, after checking the list that Rex made, learns that Ld means cold. "I am sorry kid, but we need to bring down your fever" she leaves the towel on Adira and heads to the master bedroom to get some medicine for Adira when she comes back Adira is no longer on the couch. She can't have gotten far in her sick state thought Padme.
She looks around the barracks, first looking in the master bedroom to see if she is there and upon not finding her looks in the guest bedroom and sees that Rex is asleep on the bed and Adira is right beside him with his arm around her body. She smiles upon seeing the two of them sleeping and upon realizing that Adira is secure with Rex leaves the two of them alone. She sits on the couch and turns on the tv to watch a political debate being sure to make sure that the volume is on low so that it does not wake them. After the end of the Debate, she heads to the kitchen to get glass of water when she turns around to head back to the couch, she sees Rex behind her with Adira on him her arms around his neck and his arm around her knees and Adira's head on Rex's neck. "Hey Rex" said Padme, Rex nods in her direction before going to the coffee maker and making himself a cup of coffee. "If you want, I can take her from you" said Padme before she finished speaking Rex was already shaking his head. "it's fine, she does not weigh that much, plus I still want her to still sleep" after he finished speaking, he filled his cup with crème and stirred it and took a sip and walks to the couch than sits down. "x" came a small voice
Rex turns his head and says in a gentle voice, "hey, you are awake are you not feeling sick anymore and do you think you can get some food in you" Adira looks at him and nods, "Padme can you get the med scanner out of the bedroom for me" asked Rex, Padme nods before heading to get it while Rex gets a bowl of soup for Adira. "Before you eat Adira lets take your temperature first" says Rex, Adira nods and Rex gently sets her down on her back on the couch and powers up the med scanner after a minutes Rex looks at the results and sees that she does not have a fever anymore. "let's get some food in you" he says Adira nods before starting to eat. She manages to eat the entire bowl of soup. "Good job Adira" says Rex patting her on the back. Padme leaves the two of them alone with a smile on her face. Rex looks at the clock and sees that it is now 4 pm. Looking at Adira he sees how tired she is and decides to put her to sleep. He has just put her under the covers before Rex hears Adira softly calling out for him. He realizes that she wants to cuddle with him, and he heads under the covers Adira snuggling up close to Rex and immediately falls asleep.
