Jem on waking up after the accident:

"When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm broken badly at the elbow. When it healed, and Jem's fears of never being able to play football again were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscience about his injury. His left arm was somewhat shorter than his right; when he stood or walked, the back of his hand was at right angles to his body, his thumb parallel to his thigh. He couldn't have cared less, so long as he could pass and punt.

When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it started the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out."

Scout foreshadowing at the beginning of the book-3

I can't believe I missed it. So many exciting things happenin' and I've been unconscious. Scout got to see it all and be there. It's lucky that Boo was there to help us. Without him, Scout and I would be dead. Dead, just like Bob Eweel. He definitely got what he deserved. I wish Atticus was right and I could have finished him off myself. Then again I might not be able to deal with my conscience. But again, it's lucky that Boo was there to do the deed. I reckon it would've been hard to kill a guy when I was out cold.

My left arm is beat up pretty bad. I hope it will heal ok though, I can't imagine my life without football. The doctor says my arm might look a little funny when it's done healin', but I don't care. I just want to play.
