THE DARK MIRROR
Chapter one: Meditation
She felt as if her heart were being ripped in two. Pale hands with long fingers and bitten nails worried at the edge of her cloak. She stood at a window thrice her stature and immeasurably long. The shimmering glass stretched on into the distance, wending its way out of sight. She could see her reflection in the pane, though no light shone to make it so. Tears streaked unnoticed down cheeks hollow with grief.
"I should never have come here." The words escaped from her lips into the silence and echoed in the wall-less space. All she had seen was his face, a sight she was desperate to forget. A chime just on the edge of hearing shivered the air and brought her back to herself. Taking one last look into the silvery glass, she drew the hood of her cloak up over her bluish black hair. A Chakra gem flashed red in the non-light just before the fabric settled over her forehead.
She sighed and set aside her memories. Half child, half woman, she passed her hand over the glass. It darkened, shimmering, as water will when there is neither moon nor stars to light it. She stepped through the pane, tendrils of darkness clinging to her skin, and emerged into a world of chaotic color and sounds.
With a fluid motion, Raven rose from the floor of her chamber and laid a mirror full of shadows and shifting images on her bedside table. The dark mahogany winked in the half-light of the glowing screen over her bed. An image flickered there of a tall man seated at a desk littered with papers and open books. He looked startled, as if he was unaccustomed to people, much less photographs. A square hand with neat nails ruffled sandy hair. He had his eyes turned to the camera, their color caught in the midst of changing. One winked shades of green, the other blue shifting into grey.
Raven stood staring as the image shifted to one of the same scholar, except this time he was smiling crookedly at a slight woman with dark hair and happy eyes. They were standing under a blossoming tree and the Ivory cloak the girl wore tangled around their feet. They were too intent looking into each other's eyes to notice. A single tear made its way down Raven's race before she felt the moisture and dashed it away. Countenance darkening, she gestured at the screen and it went dead.
At that moment, the chime sounded again, coming from the communicator at her side. Schooling her features, she flipped open the small device and raised it to eye level. A small face peered oat her from the tiny LCD screen- A face obscured by a black eye mask.
"Raven, we have a situation. Some guy claiming to be a champion of Atlantis is tearing up downtown and demanding to speak with the general of our army. He says we attacked them." His transmission crackled as an explosion rocked the earth around him. The dark haired titan braced him self against the shock waves as the sonic boom disbursed.
"I'll be right there Robin." Raven snapped the communicator shut and took a deep breath. She let it out slowly, listening as it hissed out through her teeth. The sorceress willed her mind to forget and forced her muscles to relax.
"Azarath…Metrion…Zinthos…" The familiar mantra soothed the rest of Raven's frazzled nerves as she melted into her spirit form. Her flesh gave way to a shadowy bird, her namesake, and she plunged through the walls of Titan's Tower towards the tall buildings of Jump City.
