The other body
"I found another body." Nick came walking towards them. "You should take a look"
Greg and Sara followed him. In the kitchen lay another female body –also wearing a summer dress, tucked in between her legs, and drenched with blood. Her body positioned the same way as the blonde victim, and similar to the victim found at the first scene. The only things different were her age and hair color: she was mid thirties, and a brunette.
"This victim doesn't fit the profile." Greg said "After all, she is a brunette, and she's younger than the other victims."
"Maybe there's a fourth victim, a brunette."
Sara took a few photos. It looked as if someone had smeared through the blood, using his hand. Left of the body she noticed a complete handprint.
At the lab, Catherine and Sara's paths crossed. A soft "Hey" escaped Sara's lips when she walked passed the older woman. But Catherine reached for her hand, and slowly Sara turned round.
"Catherine"
"Sara"
Catherine searched for words to say, but failed. Not even a "How are you?" came across her lips. She let go of Sara's hand, her eyes focused on the ground.
"Uh…"
"We'll talk later, Catherine."
Catherine turned to leave, not giving Sara any sign of agreement.
"Catherine?"
"Forget about it" the woman answered, trying to get away as soon as possible.
"Did I do something wrong?"
But there came no reply. Do something wrong? Yes you did, you left.
Sara entered Grissom's office. He was seated at his desk, busily working through a pile of paperwork.
"Hey"
He looked up, a frown forming on his forehead. "Sara. What can I do for you?"
"It's about this case, the one with the two female bodies. Lorie Broom and Jessica Smith. I think we've overlooked something with his last attack."
"Whose last attack?"
"I'm talking about the guy who attacked Catherine."
Grissom sat back in his chair. "How come you think they are related? And exactly which?"
"The first blonde vic. I went through the file again, and, together with Greg and Warrick, did some more digging. All three women had been raped shortly before their death, and the two blonde victims have been listed as rape vics since a few weeks.
"And?"
"Lorie Broom was in a relationship with our brunette Jessica Smith. Also, the blonde vic had a relationship with a brunette who apparently has been missing for a while now."
Grissom placed his index finger against his chin, over his lips, thinking about what Sara just told him, and whether she was reading too much into it.
"But that doesn't explain why it's the same attacker as Catherine's."
Sara couldn't tell him the truth about her and Catherine. Nor could she tell him she suspected to be his next victim. And definitely not that she suspected he would kill her and Catherine, because there had been something going on between them. She couldn't tell him the perp probably had planned it all –hoping something would develop between her and Catherine. The reason that they were still alive was either because they weren't together, or because they hadn't gone public during the short time they'd been getting close. On top of that it just would have been too complicated, so she decided to tell him neither truth nor lie.
"I just got this feeling"
"And what is it that we would have overlooked?"
"A body." Sara stated flatly.
Grissom's raised his eyebrows.
"Yes, I know, it's just a feeling, but I'd rather check it all again."
"A feeling?"
"Please"
Catherine parked her car in front of a cabin, not far from where she had been attacked. Her hands clamped around the wheel –knuckles turning white. At first, Grissom had only allowed Sara and Warrick to go back to the scene, because he thought it wouldn't be good for Catherine to return at that scene. However, she had thought differently about that, and went instead of Warrick. Sara nor Grissom could make her change her mind, so the brunette hoped nothing would happen.
"You shouldn't be doing this."
Catherine looked at Sara who sat in the passenger's seat. "I must, if something's there, I'll find it."
She pulled herself together, and got out of the car. While they were scanning the scene again, Sara tried to stay as close to Catherine as possible –a thing she'd better not do, because Catherine still feared not being close to her. They searched the cabin, and even before the women entered the smell of decay filled their noses.
Shortly thereafter the body was collected and brought to the morgue. The woman was a brunette. Sara and Catherine had found her at the roof. Through a hole in the roof, blood had dripped into a closet in the bedroom –onto a dark red jacket, hardly visible to the untrained eye.
Sara and Catherine were the only ones left at the crime scene, still processing the evidence. At Sara's request for Catherine to drive back to the CSI HQ, the only answer was "I'm ok"
Suddenly, the bedroom door slammed closed. An arm grabbed Sara, green eyes and a gun focused on Catherine.
