A/N: Hey guys! Back again with a more angstier one this time, hope you like it!
The red letters of the clock read 5am when she wakes up, slowly blinking sleep out of her eyes and noticing the coldness beside her.
Turning over, she reaches out her hand in the darkness only to find empty sheets.
Significantly more awake now than she had been, she searches the room for any sign of light, towards the bathroom or down the hall. But there's nothing to indicate any sort of presence.
Frowning, she slips out of bed, shivering at the cold floor beneath her bare feet. She slowly threads out into the hall and finally discerns a dim glow emanating from the living room. Quietly, she makes her way to the source.
The sight that greets her is disheartening.
He's on the floor, leaning against the couch, head lolled back against it. Empty cans litter the floor, the shiny aluminum glowing against the light of the TV that's playing some show she can only faintly hear.
Just as she's about to step forward, sigh perched on her lips, a sound escapes him that makes her freeze in place, any words halted in her throat.
A small sob.
A choked sob.
It's only then, when he straightens his head does she see the tears flowing down his face, the low light highlighting the dark circles under his eyes as water slides across them.
She's seen him upset, she's seen him pacing, she's even seen him wasted. But this…this is different.
This is breaking.
Her own tears start to fog her vision as she rushes towards him, falling to her knees to pull him to her. For a scary second, he doesn't do anything, but then, thankfully, he lets her.
She rests his head on her chest and holds him tighter than she's ever before. Holds him like he'll slip away. Holds him like he'll fall to pieces if she lets go.
His tears now drop onto her arm. His pain burns her skin, but she holds him anyway, taking in the pain, taking in the burn. A small price to pay to hold her sun.
"I'm right here," she whispers into the dark. "I'm not going anywhere."
The words are shaky and she doesn't know if she's telling him or convincing herself that they apply to him too. Those thoughts are too scary, too cold, too dark, too everything to even think about right now. She wonders if he can feel her heart racing in her chest.
He doesn't say anything, she's not even sure if he's listening. But she goes on anyway.
"I love you," she repeats like a mantra. "I love you now as I loved you then. I'll always love you."
He's her light, her everything, the glue that keeps her together.
"I need you," she tells him, holding him even tighter. "I—" her voice breaks because how could she tell him that she's the one who's going to fall to pieces without him?
"I'm here for you. I'll always be here. I'll be your sunshine until you can find it. I—"
Her voice breaks again, unable to vocalize those earlier scary thoughts. She feels more of his tears fall onto her arm.
"I'm sorry," she finally whispers. "I didn't know."
She hadn't known it was this bad. Mild and temporary was what she had thought, maybe what she had hoped. But there is so much more, and she needs to face it now.
His mind is tearing him apart and she aches to reach in and set it right. To fill it with all the happiness in the world.
With all the love she has for him.
"I didn't know…"
With those words she breaks her own heart.
And then, she feels a warmth. A hand, his hand, on her arm.
Furiously blinking back tears, she looks down to see him staring up at her. His eyes are a little glassy, but the grip is firm.
Quickly she wipes her face. She needs to get it together. She needs to do this, be here for him. He needs her right now.
Pulling him up, she tugs him even closer to her until he's laying half on top of her.
"I know now," she whispers into his hair, stroking it gently. A promise, a commitment.
They stay like that, against the glow of the TV, on the cold floor with her holding him. He's curled up against her, his breathing more even now.
But she just strokes his hair and stares resolutely at the wall above the TV, resolving then to help him find his summer. Because this pain, this hurt will not be a perpetual winter. She's going to make sure of that.
She knows she can't fix everything, as much as she wants to disable the bomb that seems to have grown in his head. But she can be the warmth until the pain goes away and then some.
"I'm not going away," she says quietly. "Believe that, I'm never going away."
A/N: First of all, thank you to Crazy-myths-reader for giving me the prompt of Forever Winter from Red (Taylor's Version). Secondly, I posted this here because I think pain is a part of love. The pain that someone you love feels will undoubtedly affect you as well and that can affect a relationship.
Forever Winter is a heavy song in general and plays into the darker aspects of mental health, to stay in line with the song, I didn't specify anything in the fic either but please know that there is always help out there for you, there are always people willing to listen and there are always brighter days ahead.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this so Please Review!
And as always, thanks for reading!
See ya! :)
