ARC I:THE RETURN (02)

CHAPTER TWO: Flashbacks, Special Abilities

Mai couldn't believe she is still alive. She even returned to her seventeen years old self. That is fifteen years! Mai died at the age of thirty-two because of an illness due to a poisoning and accident. In her first life, she is successful businesswoman. She earned herself so many so many wealth but also enemies. She is very greedy for money and work that she ended up offending someone more powerful than her. They poisoned her in her own company and was caught on a staged car accident arranged by the enemies themselves.

She lost her voice and her health after being poisoned. Although she didn't die because of the accident and poison, she was stuck to the hospital. The company that she built went bankrupt and the friends, whom she thought were loyal, betrayed her and stole her hard work. After Mai had paid all of her debts, she retreated to England for recuperation. She still had money in her secret account. Many had thought she was penniless but they had underestimated the businesswoman who built her own business empire at the age of twenty-three. Thanks to this belief and the fact that she's dying, the enemies and traitors didn't bother with her.

Mai also didn't seek revenge and stuff like that. She is dying anyway and all of those things are just her karma induced by her greed for money and reputation. She schemed all of her fellow businessmen and used so many dirty tricks to steal or make a contract successful. She also has nasty temper that chased all of the people around her. This is why she had no real friends.

At that time when she was in the hospital, she realized that money is useless if you are dying. You cannot take money in your grave nor afterlife. Mai felt ridiculous. To think that she has been greedy for something that will soon be useless. Her greed and horrible personality made her alone in her painful days. She had no friends, no family and even when she's already in her thirty's, she still don't have a husband or a boyfriend. For the first time in Mai's life she felt so useless.

For five years before she died, she did what is right and apologizes to the people who she wronged before. Of course, not everybody forgave her but still, she is very proud she did it. If it is the previous Chairwoman Mai, she wouldn't have done such thing. She made new friends in England, the friends that are loyal to her, caring, loving and definitely won't betray her nor get her money. Apart from the money for her necessities, she donated the rest of it to charity- following her mother's example but she did it anonymously. But like her mother, her health is slowly deteriorating as the days passed by. Her vision is getting blurry and she couldn't even taste food.

Because she is dying, she didn't bother to find a lover but she did gain an idol. She didn't have a hobby before besides making money but when she was in the hospital, she came to know Oliver Davis who is a researcher in the next building. British Society of Psychic Research (BSPR) HQ was just next to the hospital she is in. She heard how handsome Oliver Davis from the nurses so she asked her personal nurse who he is.

He is a paranormal researcher that finished his doctorate at the age of seventeen. His first published book is also very eye-opening in the parapsychological world and he had published it at the age of sixteen! He always become a hot topic because of his book but now, he became viral by how handsome he is. At the age of thirty-three, he decided to show his face for the first time. Many had introduced as Oliver Davis before but the BSPR personally introduced the lad so this is not a scam.

Mai become curious of the word, 'Parapsychology' so the nurse had help her by explaining it to her. It catches her interest so she bought all of the books publishes by BSPR. Of course, the most interesting to her are Oliver Davis's works. Mai thought it was such a pity that she couldn't clearly see the man's face. The nurse read his books every night before she fell asleep. She thought before that paranormal is just a sham but she came to enjoy it now. She wanted to attend one of his book signing event but her doctor forbids her to go out since there is a high possibility that she will contact any viruses and bacteria.

When the doctor told her that, Mai was scared. Of course, she is scared to die but she knew her time is almost up. It is her body so she knew it very well. She already have friends, she had helped so many people, discovered a hobby and she even have an idol. She felt that all her wishes had come true. She wanted to do something before she die. That day before Oliver's Book Signing Event, she snuck out of the hospital. She didn't changed her hospital gown but she covered herself up with a coat.

The things she didn't appreciate before, she wanted appreciate it now. She always wanted to go out. She had been stranded in the hospital for five years so she felt very refreshed while walking on the sidewalk, riding a bus and going to a park. She get to play with kids and feed the pigeons and geese. When she was satisfied, she decided to go to the BSPR HQ to see her idol. Though she didn't know what he really look like and she didn't know where his office is.

Regret just came to her when she already entered the elevator stealthily. She felt like a fool. She isn't a teenager who is chasing her popular idol! She felt ashamed. She gave up seeing Oliver Davis and went to the building's rooftop. She stayed there, her life flashing through her mind. Why did she focused her life in making money? Why did she dedicated her life in business? Why did she not enjoy her life? Why did she led her life astray when her mother died? Especially when her mother paved a happy path for him? Her mother didn't want her to venture in the cruel business world. But Mai still went and disobeyed her mother's wishes.

A strong businesswoman like Mai, for the first time ever since her mother died, loudly cried. She let it all out knowing that she's going to die soon. She didn't care about being discovered. A man came to her and spoke to her. She stopped crying and looked up to him but she cannot see him clearly. She thought it was a guard or a security staff but that man introduced himself as Oliver Davis. She was in utter shock and almost didn't believe him but he sounded so sincere and besides he doesn't know he is her idol.

It was like God had granted all her prayers! She was so happy despite knowing that this man might not be Oliver Davis. It is very unfortunate that she couldn't see him clearly nor talk to him normally. Mai felt so tired after playing and 'talking' to her idol. She reluctantly felt asleep and the time she opened her eyes, she's already in her hospital room. She thought it was all a dream but a familiar silhouette entered her blurry vision. It was Oliver Davis! All the pain went away when she saw him touching her cheek. She was truly happy and sad that her idol get to see how she died.

She opened her eyes with so much difficulty. Her eyelids keeps on falling but she still opened her eyes. She heard someone begging for her to open her eyes. That voice is very pleasant to hear. She cannot see but she knew that Oliver Davis is with her. For the last time, she smiled genuinely at him before losing her breath. She felt so satisfied. She thought she'll die alone but a stranger- her idol, kept her company.

Mai smiled at her first life's last memory. It's a pity that she couldn't get the first edition of his first book. She got the second edition though. She is alive and she will make sure that she support her idol until the day she die again. Her first life may be considered as a dream if others know it but not for her. All those emotions and pain are all real to her.

She hugged her mother's picture and smiled. It was a pity that she didn't go back before her mother died. She had so many things to tell her. She wanted to tell her that she love her and that she is sorry that she disobeyed her wishes. It was painful to attend her mother's funeral again. Mai let her tears fall again and hugged her mother.

"Mom. This time, I will live happily just as you wished. I will not be selfish and greedy like I did in the past. I will not offend someone without a reason. Like you, I will help people. I will find you a son-in-law and give you grandchildren. I will live, Mom. I promised."

But living like a normal and ordinary rich woman is not as simple she thinks.

"AAAAAHH!"

"Help me…. Help!"

"Help…Me…"

"Why? Why?! Why?! Oh why, God?!" Mai frustratingly screamed at the top of her lungs while beating her pillows and blanket.

The young woman was just woken up by her usual 'alarm clock'. They are worst alarm clock, wait! No! They are not even considered as clocks! Alarm clocks just annoyed people with their annoying sounds but hers scared the daylights out of her. They are not your ordinary 'alarm clocks'. They are what people commonly referred as 'ghosts', 'souls' or 'spirits'. But how come they're be Mai's infamous 'alarm clocks'? Simple. It's because she can see them and they are bothering her. EVERYDAY!

She glared at the bloodied faces floating in front of her. If someone else saw this horrible scene, he would've died in shock. Mai flung her blanket at them and shooed them away. With a bright light coming from her body, the ghosts fled in fright. Mai sighed and went to the bathroom to freshen up.

Mai thought that she could now live 'normally' but it seems like God had another plan for her. Other than seeing ghosts or spirits, she can also look unto a spirit's past and a living person's future by 'touching' their souls. A spirit is already dead so she can only see their past but the living has time left so Mai can only see their future. About a living person's past? Mai don't have the ability to do that. It must be the restrictions set by the Supreme One. One restriction is that she can't easily alter someone's future.

She may see something or do something that normal humans can't do but it doesn't mean she is powerful. Mai had seen so many visions of someone's future but some of them are do not end in happy ending. Some died tragically and no matter what she do, Mai couldn't stop what will happen. Mai did tried to alter someone else's future and it ended successful but it only happens rarely.

Mai didn't know if God willed her to save those people but whenever she did see someone's tragic future, she tried to warn them. With so many failures in the past, she learned that attaching herself to those people with bad fates can only cause suffering and pain. Knowing their future and trying to save them with all you've got but failed in the end leaves a bitter taste in the mouth that a person can never get rid of.

With all those worst experiences, Mai decided to just warn them and not get herself involved. This is also the reason why she doesn't have many friends. But even if all of these scar her, Mai still continued to view the positive side of life. She was given the second chance of life and she will treasure and enjoy it unlike what she did in her first life. She can bear all of these just to be happy.

She discovered she can see ghosts after her mother's funeral. They were moving their thing to Cambridge when she saw a spirit of a flight attendant who died because of a sudden cardiac arrest. Mai was pretty scared to see her pale and rotting skin that she caused a commotion in the plane. She can see ghosts on the streets, the parks hospitals and many other places. She discovered her other ability when she accidentally touched a spirit. She discovered that she can see the future when she touched the light on Father Andrew's forehead. Unfortunately the light on a person's body is the mirror of their souls. Some people thought she's crazy and it took Mai weeks to adapt. This postponed her plan of going to Japan.

Only Father Andrew knew of this abilities. Mr. Peterson and Ms. Wilson didn't know because Mai didn't want them to worry for her. The priest is the one who stayed by her side and help her figure out what to do. They tried so many experiments and met some devastating failures but they succeeded in countering the spirits after a year.

The spirits always told Mai that she has a warm and bright light radiating from her and it is the reason why spirits like them got to Mai and dumped her so many requests. Mai made a deal with the ghosts who can decently talk to her. In exchange for her help, the ghosts need to monitor that light while she tried so many concentration techniques like meditation and breathing exercises. Mai managed to control that light after months of trainings.

Mai also learned from experience that not all ghosts liked the light she is emitting. Her bright light is almost similar to the portal through the other realm where the spirits are supposed to go. This is why the ghost who approach her wanted to get help from her in hoped that they will cross over and be reincarnated. But not all spirits wanted to move on, that is why some spirits attack Mai to destroy the light she is radiating. They were afraid that the light would come and vanish them from the realm of the living.

Thankfully, father Andrew was there to aid her. He may not look like it but he is a trained exorcist but he can't help her every time a spirit attacks her because the priest needs permission from the Bishop in order to perform an exorcism. They may do it secretly but Father Andrew doesn't want to disobey rules that much. So Mai wanted to train and do something with that light. She thought that since some spirits are afraid of her light then she might have a use of it by protecting her from the supernatural.

With the help of Father Andrew and the spirits she made a deal with, she managed to control the light with the help of her abilities. She touched their souls to know what they really wanted in order for them to move and she would try and make their wishes come true. If it can't be solved that way, she can will the light to harm them. This second method also helps her by driving annoying ghosts away if she's in a bad mood. But of course, there are still limitations. She can't use both methods if the spirit had evolved into something evil or if she had encountered a demon. Mai light is not that ultra-powerful.

Mai had been in trouble while assisting or exorcising ghosts and even though she had learned to control that light, it doesn't mean ghosts stopped following her. They approach seeing that she can see or help spirits. And it is troublesome for her. She even sometimes blamed God for giving her these annoying abilities but well, beggars can't be choosers and no matter how rich she is, she's still a kidney bean compared to the Almighty God. So she doesn't have a choice but to deal with it and just live. It's not that common for a person to return to the past.

The supernatural crisis had been solved after a year! And Mai's plan of migrating to Japan is now commencing!
