ARC II: THE ENCOUNTER AT NAGANO.
CHAPTER FOUR: A Perfect Medium, A Ghost and A Young Woman.
Eugene Davis always wanted to visit the country where their ancestors came from. He and his twin brother were born in Boston and migrated to England after a couple adopted them. Their lives pretty much changed after the adoption. Their live became easy and happy thanks to their adoptive parents that cared genuinely for them. Food, shelter, education, and love was given to them without anything in return. The two of them graduated early and his brother even became a Division Head in British Society of Psychic Research (BSPR) after he had published his first book and he got his doctorate at the age of 19.
Their life is joyous and they are both contented but Eugene still wanted to know more about Japan. He doesn't want to learn more about their ancestors but he was greatly interested in studying the country's culture. His brother and their parents knew of his interests a long time ago but they didn't allow him to travel alone even when they turned adult at 18. Their parents told him that he was still young and no one was free enough to accompany him in his travels. Eugene was disappointed and sulked for a few days. Though he's a bit more rebellious than his studious brother and was always in trouble, he couldn't really oppose their parents that much seeing how they are really serious and worried about his safety
However, he proposed the idea again two years later. Not only does he want to know more about the country but he also wanted to meet the girlfriend that he met online. But his brother had discovered about the other reason and opposed his idea even more than the last time. Eugene was considering escaping but all of it changed on their 21st birthday, his brother and their parents allowed him to go to Japan alone on the condition that he will research more on Japan's ancient art of exorcisms.
Eugene was glad that they allowed him to go. His brother, who was previously against his idea, also prepared his plane ticket and the expenses he will be needing during the trip but Eugene only have three months to explore and meet that year-long online girlfriend of his. They told Eugene that they knew what he's planning and gave up on opposing him. They told him that it is better to prepare everything he needed for her safety instead of escaping with nothing in hand. Eugene almost smack his head on their explanation. If he had known they would give up because of this, he would have rebelled sooner. But Eugene was still glad and excited nonetheless.
Eugene had learned so much while staying in the country for a week. He also book an appointment with his girlfriend three days later! He was so excited that he couldn't sleep much at night. Eugene let out a sweet smile while thinking of that girl. He had met that girl when he was 17. At first, he only sees her as an ordinary online friend but their chat and call time prolonged after a few months. Then he started courting her after realizing that she's important to him. She became his girlfriend on his 20th birthday. They had known each other for 4 years but it will be their first time meeting personally. Eugene was quite nervous too.
'What if she don't like me? What if I turned her off?'
The young raven-haired boy rolled on his bed while hugging his pillow. He is currently in one of Nagano Prefecture's famous hotel and they are planning to meet in one of the famous shrines in the area. His heart flutters again at the thought. He spent giggling in his room like a psychopath before coming down to the restaurant below to eat. He tried the hot spring in the hotel and it relieved all of his fatigue. Eugene hummed to himself and planned to go there the next night. Eugene found himself a table and ordered a light meal to eat. He look around him to observe the people while waiting for his food.
Ever since he was aware of his surroundings at the tender age of four, he always had known that he can see things that other people cannot. He can see the dead and can talk to them. He was very scared facing those scary people. He doesn't know what to do and he couldn't seek help from their biological parents since they believed that they are children of demons because of his and his brother's supernatural abilities. His brother can move things with only is consciousness and he can see a person's past after touching one of the person's belongings. The first one is called psychokinesis (PK) and the last one is called psychometry.
In addition to Eugene's ability to see ghosts, he can also separate his soul from his body. This ability is called astral projection. For years, he and his brother learned how to control these supernatural abilities and put them into good use. This is also one of the reason why their adoptive parents noticed them in the orphanage. These abilities had been affecting their lives in a negative way so the couple immediately adopted them and tried to help them. Unlike other people, the couple had been exposed to paranormal research so they hadn't mistreated them not even once because of their unusual powers. Their adoptive parents hadn't called them children of the devil unlike the people who gave birth to them.
He and his brother also met some people to claim to have supernatural abilities like them. Some were just frauds and some are actually do have those abilities but not as strong as his and his brother's. Some tried to use trick to fool the institution but his brother, who is a madman in paranormal research, always found ways to expose them. This is the reason why alleged psychics tend to back out from examinations when his brother is there to observe.
"Please! Please! Please! Big Sister! Look at me!" Eugene turned around and saw a muddied teenager girl sitting opposite towards a young woman, who is so focused in typing something on her laptop.
The teenager is wearing a school uniform and she's really dirty from head to toe. Her hair is disheveled and there are branches and dried leaves caught by it. Her face is pale and her lips are blue, bloodied and cracked. There are multiple wounds on her body and there are so much dried blood on her neck. Eugene can only see the teenager's right side but he is certain that she's been abused or beaten badly. The girl had been calling to the busy woman seated opposite to her but the latter didn't falter and she doesn't seem to hear her screams.
The young woman is pretty but her beauty was ruined by the dark circles under her eyes. She seems to be around Eugene's age. Her brown hair was also messed up like she had just woken up from her sleep. Her chocolate eyes are tired and annoyed but that annoyance doesn't seem to be directed to the noisy spirit in front of her. Her irritation is most likely because of whatever that she is typing on her laptop. The teenager ghost's cries became anxious by the second and wailed not long after but the young woman continued with what she's doing, not caring for the pitiful girl in front of her.
'She is a spirit. No wonder that young woman couldn't notice her.' Eugene thought while watching the scene before him. He found that girl pitiful so he planned to approach the ghost later in a secluded place to help her. The young man shook his head and was about to turn his head away when he noticed the young woman pulling out a headphone from her bag. She put it on and connected it to her phone.
"What is it?" The young woman asked nonchalantly, making the teenager ghost raise her head to look at her. Hope filled the ghost's eyes but she became disappointed seeing the headphones on the young woman's head. Everyone would think that she is talking to someone in the phone and Eugene thought so too. However, the next scenario stunned the young man and the teenager ghost speechless.
"You have been bothering me for a while now. So what do you want me to do?" The young woman, who was so focused on her laptop previously, suddenly look up from the screen and spared a knowing glance at the space in front of her. Both Eugene and the ghost was scared by her glare. Coupled with the young woman's haggard appearance and menacing glare, who wouldn't get scared?
"You can really see me?!"
'She can see her?'
Eugene and the ghost asked simultaneously, the other one asked in her head while the other one rejoiced with a loud victorious scream. The young woman, gave the ghost another scary look, shutting up the happy ghost. The young woman shook her head in disdain before gluing her eyes to the screen again.
"You better be quiet and tell me what do you want before I got bored of you. As you can see, I am very busy." The young woman answered the ghost with an exasperated sigh while typing on her keyboard. The ghost contained her scream and nodded enthusiastically.
"Big Sister, I knew you could see me! Well, you see, I was friends with a boy in another school and he invited me to hang out with his friends after school but they took me some-"
"Go straight to the point. What do you want me to do?" The young woman asked the ghost again, irritation is visible on her face. The teenager stopped for a second before answering the young woman. She's also equally annoyed by how snobbish this person is.
"I want you to avenge me! I want that guy to suffer in jail!" The teenager screamed in anguish that it even caused the glass of water, which is placed beside the ghost, to fall and break once it met the ground. Eugene and other people flinched at the glass breaking noise. Some people glared at Mai while the staff came over to clean the mess, not asking what happened.
"Gomenasai. I think my elbow bumped into it while I am encoding." The young woman answered calmly but Eugene, who was watching the whole thing, knew what she said is a complete lie.
The glass of water was placed behind her laptop and there is no way her elbow would bump into it. Eugene was still astonished by this young woman. He couldn't believe that he would encounter a medium just as himself. He has seen other mediums before in BSPR but he was still fascinated to coincidentally see one. His food came and he began eating it in a very fast pace. He thought that woman would go away after hearing the ghost's request but she surprisingly stayed on her seat and continued typing whatever she is encoding in her laptop.
"Hey! Why aren't you going to avenge me?!" The ghost, who was previously polite to the young woman, stared to call her rudely. The young woman ignored her again, making the ghost grumble in annoyance.
"Hey!" the ghost screamed again, her volume is even louder than before. She also audaciously poked the hand that was dancing on top of the laptop keyboard to get the attention of the young woman. But that ghost just got a menacing death glare from her. And Eugene doesn't know what happened but he saw how the ghost sacredly backed away from the young woman like she had been burnt by something.
Eugene wandered with a frown. 'What happened?' The ghost screamed painfully and kept rubbing her arms like she was really burning. "I'm sorry, Big Sister! I will not do it again, I swear!" The ghost apologizes and Eugene can feel pain and begging coming the teenager's voice. Later, the ghost stopped wriggling in pain as she laid on the floor in relief. Eugene watched with interest and also pity the girl. 'Did she use some kind of talisman on the ghost?'
"Listen, I have a draft to rewrite because of some damn picky editor and I need to submit it before midnight. So if you really want to me help you, you just have to stay quiet and wait." The woman's blood curling cold tone gave the ghost and Eugene some massive shivers. 'That must be the reason why she's very annoyed. Is she writing a thesis?' Eugene let out a smile afterwards. That woman's face is very similar to his brother's face when he's writing a research report or a thesis. The place became so quiet until the young woman finished typing an hour later.
"Let's go."
The ghost followed the young woman out after she finished putting everything she owns in her bag. Eugene was also alerted and start to follow them, trying his best to make himself scarce and not getting both of their attention. Eugene wanted to know what would happen, thanks to her very curious nature. He listen to the talking ghost, asking the young woman what to do next. The young woman just ignored her with disinterest and continued to walk towards a dark and lonely road.
After a 20-minute creepy walk in that dreadful walk, Eugene noticed a crowd forming at the sidewalk. In front of them is a water drainage, Eugene couldn't see what is happening because of the crowd but he knew that something serious is happening at the sight of the flickering red and blue light coming from a police car. While not losing sight of the young woman and the ghost, Eugene walked towards the group of whispering women.
"How pitiful! She's just a young girl!"
"The culprit is so cruel!"
"The police also speculated that she had been rape and beaten!"
"We need to warn our children about this!"
Eugene widened his eyes from those sentences and stood on tiptoe in steal a glance at the scene behind the crown and the yellow barricade. Eugene's stomach dropped at the sight of a young girl lying on a stretcher. He couldn't see the face because the body was covered in a white blanket but he knew it was a girl judging by the skirt that was not covered on the sides. Eugene look up from the body and saw the ground that was marked on by the police. The white marking formed a figure of a person showing the position of the body after it was found. Eugene also saw the policeman outlining the position of a blazer before picking it out and putting it into a resealable plastic bag
'That uniform…!' Eugene sucked in his breathe and stopped himself from turning his head towards the ghost's direction. The uniform and the shoes that was not covered by the white cloth was completely similar to what the ghost is wearing! Eugene assessed the place and it was full of men in police uniform, gathering pictures and everything that had to do with the body that was found. He carefully turned towards the young woman's direction only find that the ghost and the young woman already disappeared.
Eugene tried to locate them using his senses. He followed the energy he felt from the teenager ghost and found them after a few minutes. Eugene ran when they're treading towards the train station. Eugene was so thankful that he took his temporary train pass and his wallet before leaving the hotel. They left the train after passing by two stations. Eugene watched as the two of them keep walking in the dark and it took 30 minutes for them to stop for a while. They turned left and was heading towards another dark alley and he saw them stop in front of an old building.
Eugene hid behind the bush watch them. He couldn't hear them but she saw the ghost point on the building's second floor. They entered the building and Eugene followed them but before he could step inside, his neck met a very cold round metal and felt a presence on her back. A familiar cold and feminine whisper came from behind as the cold round metal on his neck pressed even further. Eugene didn't know what it is but he knew he would mess up if he struggle.
"You have been staring at me and following me for hours now. Who are you? What do you want?"
'Crap! I was discovered!' Eugene panicked and trembled at the cold feeling on his neck. This is the reason why his brother always scolded him for his unstoppable curiosity. 'He was right! It would be the cause of my death one day!' Eugene closed his eyes to calm down and think of a way to talk his way out. He saw the ghost who is watching them in confusion. His eyes lit out as he stared at the teenager ghost with hope.
"Huh? HUH?! Big Sister, he can see me!"
