ARC II: THE ENCOUNTER AT NAGANO.
CHAPTER FIVE: The Case of Miura Suzuki.
"Huh? HUH?! Big Sister, he can see me!"
Eugene felt the stiffness of the woman behind him and took advantage of it to set himself free. He abruptly turned around to face the young woman and saw nothing sharp or dangerous on her hand. He wondered about the thing that was attached to his neck just now but that is not important in his current situation! He needs to give her an explanation before this woman did something that harm him.
"W-wait! Please let me explain myself! I-it's like this… uhmm… I saw you talking to this young girl here and you k-know, she's a ghost and I-I got curious and…f-followed you two here." Eugene fidgeted while nervously explaining to the woman who continued to glue her eyes on him. He suddenly didn't know what to do faced with her scary face.
"If you really can see her, what is the color of her eyes?" The young woman asked him before Eugene turned to the teenager ghost who changed her location. She jumped in one place to another and Eugene followed her with his eyes. After taking a brief look, Eugene gazed at Mai with a smug victorious face.
"Her eyes are light brown. She had a long and straight black hair. She has a mole under her left eye and she's wearing the dark brown high school uniform." Eugene gave her the ghost's description. The teenager ghost is applauding him loudly.
"Whoa! Spot on! Big Brother, you're not only handsome but also-" The ghost praised him but she couldn't continue with her rainbow farts when the woman suddenly cut in. "I only asked about the eyes, dummy. Now that the issue is done here, we have to go up now. And since you came with us, you're going to see it until the end."
Eugene was about to complain when the young woman pulled him through his collar. They went upstairs and similar to the mess they saw in the first floor, the second floor is even messier. There are so many old and dirty unusable thing scattered around but there are signs that someone had been living here recently. There are cigarette butt and ashes around and there are baseball bats around the place. It is clear that this place is made into a gang den by some delinquents.
"Hey, don't you think we should leave? What if we encounter someone here? We could get hurt!" Eugene suggested in a whisper but the young woman just ignored him and head to one of the rooms that the ghost pointed.
"You wussy." The young woman insulted him making him a bit angry but instead of leaving like he had suggested, he square his shoulders and followed the young woman like he wasn't afraid. Correction, he isn't afraid that ghosts might appear, he is afraid that some living person may come. It is clear that a person living in this kind of environment is no good! The two of them may be at a disadvantage if they encounter him or them here! The three of them, including the ghost, stopped for a while in front of a door. The ghost nodded at the young woman's silent cue before opening it.
The heavy odor of musk infiltrated their nostrils as soon as the door was opened. Inside the room is an equal mess as the other rooms but what make the room different from the others are the dried bloodstains painted of the wall, the floor and on the messy bed. Eugene and the young woman almost vomited at the sight. Looking at the rage in the teenager's eyes, Eugene more or less guessed how she is connected to this place.
'This is the actual crime scene.' The young woman fumbled those her mini bag and took out a phone. Her thumb moved over the phone screen before putting it beside her ear. Eugene curiously watched her, wondering who she called until the call got answered. Even before the other person speak, the young woman already wailed pitiful.
"H-help! Mr. Policeman, we n-need help! We just saw something horrible!" Eugene was slightly taken a back with the young woman's pitiful call for help. Her shoulders are shaking and it almost seem like she's genuinely suffering. And this image was seen by the ghost and also Eugene who couldn't see her face.
"Miss, please calm down. We will get to you in just a few moment. Would you tell us where you are located?" a voice coming from the phone sounded as the young woman immediately answered her with a quivering voice. "We a-are in an abandoned building near * Street in Nagano. W-we were just playing test of c-courage because this building is said to be haunted when we s-saw blood all o-over the place! Please, we need help! W-what if ghost appear here?!"
"Please don't panic, Miss. There are no ghost. The police are on their way to your location. For now, please leave the building and wait in front. Please don't panic, miss." The policeman, who answered the phone call, repeated her first sentence as the young started wailing loudly for help. Not long after, the young woman calmed down and hang up the phone call.
Eugene went to her and put a hand on her right shoulder as a means of comfort but the young woman suddenly turned around and showed her perfect dry face with her usual bored emotion. The young man and the ghost was dumbfounded at the sight of her not-so-miserable-face. To think that this woman just acting pitiful a while ago, this was truly eye-opening. The young woman moved her legs and walked towards the exit. The ghost and Eugene dumbly stood there and watched her in daze.
"What are you doing? Let's go." The young woman sated, looking at them like they were some kind of idiots. This sentence woke them up from their daze. The two of them angrily glared at the young woman while following her.
"You were just acting?!"
"You were just acting?!"
The ghost and Eugene asked simultaneously but the young woman just ignored them and waited for the police outside the building. While waiting, Mai briefed Eugene about their upcoming play. They will tell the police that they were playing a dare and Mai was dared to enter that 'haunted' building alone but her 'cousin', Eugene was worried so he followed her. That is when they saw the bloodstained room. Eugene agreed to this setting since he is a foreigner and he might get in trouble if they really told the police of what happened.
The police came not long after and the young woman began acting. Eugene, together with the ghost who knew the young woman's true nature, were so amazed by how fast she change faces that Eugene almost forgot he had to act. They went to the police station to sign a papers before they were allowed to go home. They told them that they will be investigating that place once they saw the bloodstains inside that room.
There are no CCTV cameras on the place around where the body was thrown because that sidewalk is hidden and dark. But that abandoned building is located near a school so there are surely cameras around to capture how the teenager and her 'boyfriend' entering the area or the building. Using the blood, the policeman will know that they belong to the teenager that was discovered on that sidewalk. And the teenager ghost told the two of them that she is raped so this DNA that will be found on that room will point out who is the culprit and he will be sentence to jail for his crime.
Eugene was amazed as the young woman told them this information after so much pestering on their way to the hotel. The ghost also nodded happily hearing the plan and applaud the young woman for her cleverness. The case was pretty much close but there are still no results so the teenager girl is still not able to move on. Eugene also clapped in amazement and stared at the two of them for a while. He offered a smile before introducing himself.
"I am Eugene Davis. What about you two? We have solved a case together but I don't know your names." Mai stopped after hearing that name but she threw the doubt in her heart through the window after not hearing the name, 'OLIVER' before the 'DAVIS'.
"Yujinu Davisu? Sounds foreign. You must be from another country." The teenager commented while beaming at him. "I am Miura Suzuki! Nice to meet you! Which one is your first name?"
"Sorry. My first name is Eugene. Nice to meet you too, Suzuki-chan." Eugene answered, calling the girl affectionately. He forgot that people in Japan introduced their surnames first before their first names. His girlfriend also told him that he can use '-chan' to a girl younger than him. The ghost squealed in delight and praised him for being handsome before they turned their heads to the young woman.
"I am Taniyama Mai. It's a pleasure to meet you." The young woman answered while scratching the back of her neck. She stared at the girl before asking her. "What would you do while waiting? The ones that harmed you will never escape the police since the DNA is a solid proof of their crime." The girl bowed her head, thinking of what she will do next. She looked up at them before smiling brightly.
"Before, I was so angry that it was the only thing that fills me. I even wanted to kill the one who killed me but I always got the feeling that if I do that, I will not be myself. So I was so hopeful when I coincidentally saw you looking at me for a second. I am sorry if I bothered you, Big Sister."
"Nah, it happens to me all the time. But I don't really like helping ghosts on my vacation. You're the only exception." The young woman answered her making the girl smiled. Eugene also smiled at the genuine smile of the girl. Her messy look and beaten face was slowly returning to normal. It was as if she was never hurt at all. It is really a pity that this girl, who has a beautiful smile died just because of a person.
"Thank you, you two! I am very grateful!" The ghost happily cried as she hug the two of them. Eugene and the young woman flinched at the cold touch but they never moved to push the girl away. The ghost separated herself after a while. "For now, I will go to my parents and try to be with them with my remaining time. I knew that I will never see them again after that bastard was caught. It is okay if they couldn't see me, I just want to be with them. I am really thankful to you two!"
"I pray that you will live for a long time in your next life. I pray that you will be as kind as you are now too. So hurry along. I bet you missed your parents a lot." Mai smiled for the first time and rubbed the girl's face. The girl nodded and ran away. The two living people didn't move until the girl was out of sight.
"She's really kind, right? She had experience something horrible and traumatic but she only asked for justice instead of their lives. She also doesn't wish to live longer knowing that she's already dead." Eugene complimented the girl while letting out a sad smile. The teenager, Suzuki-chan told him that she had been invited by her boyfriend to hang out with his friends but she had been forced and dragged to that place. She had been raped and humiliated not just by his boyfriend but also that jerk's friends. She was then killed when one guy accidentally slashed her neck when she attempted to escape.
"Her parents must have brought her up with great care and right education." Mai answered with an equally sad expression on her face. They hailed a cab to get to the hotel together but before Mai leave the elevator, Eugene stopped the young woman to ask her a question.
"Wait!" Eugene yelled as he caught the young woman's arm. The young woman stood frozen at his touch. Eugene noticed it and let go immediately but Mai stood still for a few moments. Eugene though she doesn't like physical contact so she let her off for a few seconds.
"I am sorry."
Mai woke up from his apology and stared at him for a few seconds, her expressions are unreadable. Eugene doesn't know what to do and was about to apologize again but the young woman suddenly smack his head hard.
"Ouch!" Eugene complained and saw Mai's usual disinterested expression. She crossed her arms on her chest haughtily while Eugene rubbed his red. "So what do you want?"
"Ah, how did you know what happened to the girl even before she explain her situation?" Eugene straightened his posture and politely asked the question. He was looking at her with great curiosity as the young woman tilted her head in confusion. Mai began to ponder and remembered what happened at the restaurant. She showed Eugene a mischievous look before turning her back on him.
"That is for me to know and for you to find out." She answered playfully while waving her arms, silently giving her farewells to Eugene.
The young man really wanted to know the answer but before he open his mouth, the elevator door moved and it was closed three seconds later. Eugene sighed in defeat before the elevator stopped on his floor. He walked towards his door and immediately wrote a report of what happened. He is sure that his brother might be interested about it. Eugene also didn't forget to tell him about his new found two-faced friend who he suspected to have other psychic abilities besides seeing ghosts.
That afternoon in the next morning, the case was broadcasted in the radio. The police had investigated the old abandoned building and also immediately caught the bunch of delinquents who raped and killed Miura Suzuki. The police did their best to solve the case with all the evidence they got. All of the names are said on the radio except his and Mai Taniyama's name. Eugene and Mai's request to not divulge their identities to the public for protection and privacy. The police agreed and spared them after warning them not to have a test of courage again. Both Eugene and Mai met in the hotel's garden to bid farewell to Miura Suzuki.
"So I just have to follow that warm light, right?"
"Yes, you will be at peace once you crossed over." Eugene answered her but the teenager hang her head in sadness.
"If I followed that light, would I forget my parents? How about you two? And also my brother?"
"It's possible."
"Wow, I thought these scenes only happened in Hara Masako's movies but I really did turned into a ghost and I need to leave my family. I am just sad." The teenager laughed bitterly while wiping away her tears. "I mean who will tuck my little brother to sleep and sing him lullabies? My parents are always busy to take care of him. I am sure he will be lonely. And my parents, who will massage them when they're tired?" Suzuki-chan cried out loud while listing all the things that she will leave. There is anguish and helplessness contained in her cries.
"Don't worry, I will find a way to tell them your last words." Mai told her, making the teenager ghost elated but she already started to add more words for Mai to deliver. Eugene laughed at the burdened face Mai is making. It wasn't long before Mai snapped. "I take it back! Just write a letter to them!"
"But I can't hold anything physical." The ghost complained but Mai glared at Eugene, who couldn't stop laughing. Sensing the intense stares from the two, Eugene's laugh slowly became quieter. "Why are you staring at me?"
"Possess him." Mai answered, not Eugene's question but the ghost's. Eugene blanked out but before he opened his mouth to decline, Mai already gave him a death glare while holding her fists up. The young man sighed and nodded, "Okay."
The teenager girl floated in front of him before she dove into his body. Eugene didn't know what happened after that but it was already sunset when he woke up. The presence of Suzuki-chan is already gone and the garden regain its peaceful atmosphere. His hands and sleeves are also full of ink and his right wrist is aching. It is VERY PAINFUL! Mai was looking at him with a triumphant look while looking at the big box of envelopes in her arms.
"Holy-…. Just how many letters did she wrote?!"
"Almost a hundred. You okay? Still alive?" Mai asked sarcastically, receiving a glare from the young man.
"She must have had so many friends." Eugene noted but Mai shook her head. "No, she also wrote to her rivals and enemies, spilling all their secrets to one person to another. She also told her teacher about the secret affair of his wife." Eugene almost collapsed at her answer. The kind image that he had built up for the late teenager was gone and was replaced by the girl's pettiness.
"What are you doing? Let's go."
The two of them dumped the box of letters to the post office, sending it to the teenager's address. They are doing this anonymously so it's a bother to send all of it to their respective addresses. It would make them look suspicious so they sent it to the teenager's house to make her parents sent the letters out for them.
That is how the case of Miura Suzuki was solved.
