ARC II:THE ENCOUNTER AT NAGANO.
CHAPTER SEVEN: Suzuki's Letter and Eugene's Fate.
'Dear Mom and Dad,
First of all, I am very sorry for leaving you behind. I understand that it must be painful for you to lose your child first. For that, I am very sorry. I am very sorry, Mom and Dad. I am very sorry that I have not been that filial before I left.
But I am very thankful that you are my parents. To be honest, I am very upset that my Mom got remarried but I am glad that you married Uncle Nitta, oh! I mean, Dad. I am sorry if I only called you Dad now that I am gone. I was just embarrassed. You filled in to the role of a father for me even though I sometimes distance myself. You don't know how thankful I am to you. You accepted my mom and me unlike my biological father did and provide all of our needs without any conditions. You also gave us a chance to meet our cute little Haru-chan!
Please tell Haru-chan, my young brother to always clean himself after playing. He also needs to remember to brush his teeth after meals. Tell him I am sorry that I couldn't pick him up from school or take him to an amusement park or help him take a bath. Tel him I am very sorry and I am very sad that we have to separate this way. He is a very good younger brother. Tell him to be always happy and face every problem with a smile. He is very young now so he might forget me. Mom and Dad would have to make him remember me at all times. I will be upset if he told others that he doesn't have an older sister!
Mom, you're a very good mom. When that mam left, you worked hard for me. I am glad that you are my mom. You might think that you're very lacking as a mom because you don't know everything about me but it's not true. I saw how you tried your best whenever you had time. I am very thankful for that. I am very glad that the gods had given you to me as my mom.
Please don't worry about me. I went to a very happy place. I find myself friends that can see me after I died. They also helped me punish those bad guys. The Big Sister looks indifferent and cold but I can tell that she had a good heart. I felt very warm whenever I was near her. The Big Brother who helped me is so handsome! He is the most handsome guy I have ever seen! I wish I would be married to a guy as handsome as him in my next life! I can't tell you their names but they are kind enough to help me move on. I am forever in debt to them.
Well, that's it! I have so many things to tell you but I can't express it in this sheet of paper. I wish to be a family with you in my next life. This is goodbye but I am very sure we will meet again!
I LOVE YOU!
Love,
Miura Suzuki.'
Eugene heaved a heavy sigh while looking at the full set outfit that was delivered to him yesterday. And when he said 'full set', he really meant full set. Not only did she ordered clothes but matching shoes, accessories, bag and wallet. In addition to the purse that will be a gift for his girlfriend, no wonder she spent almost five thousand dollars!
'What is she, his fairy godmother?! And how did she even know my foot size?!'
"No! I have to pay her back! I wonder when the agency would hand in their salary."
But putting the money aside, Eugene had to admit that this suits her very well. It is a black and white outfit but it isn't gloomy. The accessories showed his outgoing personality. Eugene carefully placed the gift on his new bag and went to the bathroom to prepare. Mai is leaving today and they agreed to meet up in the restaurant before parting. Eugene reluctantly wore the new outfit and went to the mirror to style his hair and do his usual morning skin care routine.
He went down to the first floor carrying his bag, cellphone and wallet. He couldn't believe the impact the clothes had on him. He knew this clothes fits him but he never thought it would make him even more handsome! Although Mai doesn't look that fashionable, she has a very great fashion sense! Eugene smirked as he couldn't help but to take selfies while he is still alone in the elevator.
'I should send this to Noll, Mum and Madoka!'
Eugene was in a very good mood after he left the elevator. He can feel stares from people but he ignored it and went to the meeting place. He spotted Mai's back in the corner and went to her. She is typing on her laptop as usual. Eugene moved towards her and patted her shoulder but he almost had a heart attack the moment the young woman turned around.
"Holy! You look worse than a zombie today! What happened?!" Eugene jumped a few meters back while the young woman snorted at his reaction. "Someone didn't like the ending I had for my novel so they decided to harass me by disturbing me all night." Mai answered, remembering how Yukino bombarded her phone with complaints. Of course she turned off her phone but that woman called the hotel numerous times just to make her accept her calls. The hotel even begged her to answer Yukino's phone call because she called more than a hundred times in one night!
"Geez! Look at those dark circles!" Eugene commented earning himself a glare from his friend. They ordered foods as the young woman put all the gadget away from the table. Mai noticed how he is blooming and snorted. She had helped him but why does God made her even more miserable? She just want a vacation but why do other people have to disturb her rest? Mai sighed while scrutinizing Eugene.
"Did you bring the gift for your girlfriend?" Mai asked while the young man nodded. "Yes, but it is your own gift for her! I am going to buy my gift myself!" Eugene look so determined but the young woman just ignored him.
"Up to you. Just introduce me to her afterwards. I want to work with her next time."
The first movie that was adapted from her first novel became popular because of Hara Masako. Some of her fans also started reading her novels after watching the movie she starred in. Of course her fans also watched the movie but her acting was so precise that Mai wanted to hire her again to act on one of her upcoming movies. Though she didn't know when she will meet this chatterbox again.
"Okay! Let's meet up again later. I will be staying in this country for less than three months. Just tell me when you're free!" Eugene answered happily but Mai remembered the schedule that Yukino had just given her. "I am sorry, I will be busy for the next 8 months."
"Ah? Is it because of your novel?" Mai nodded at his questions. "Yes, and many side jobs." Eugene nodded in understanding but he still wonder why she is working hard when she is clearly well off.
"Don't worry! My brother and I will be transferring here in Japan for work so we could meet up anytime! I have to introduce you to him! I's sure he will be interested in your psychic abilities!"
"He can see ghosts too?" Mai asked, quite surprise that his brother also have a psychic anility.
"No, he had other psychic abilities."
"Ah. Sure." Mai wanted to ask what psychic abilities his brother possessed but they only recently met so she may be crossing the line if she asked.
"So you're really leaving now?" Eugene asked, looking a bit reluctant. Mai snorted at him and gave his head a light pat. "You look like an abandoned dog. You shouldn't have travelled alone if you get lonely so easily."
"Tsk! I wanted my brother to come with me but he didn't want to! I'm starting to doubt whether or not he loves his work more than he loves me! But this is still okay. A part of me wanted to travel alone."
Eugene started to chat more as their meals came. Mai listened to him patiently while eating. The young man doesn't seem to run out of words. He told her about his experiences in Japan. Mai explained the things he doesn't understand about Japanese culture and some weird things he encountered. And as a traveler herself, she recommended some places worth visiting. They went to the front after finishing their meal. Eugene also insisted in paying for their meals before leaving the restaurant.
"This is goodbye. But you have to meet us when I come back here in Japan! I'll introduce you to my brother and my friends! You'll gona love them!"
'If they all act like you then I'd rather wish that next meeting won't come." Mai answered in her heart without showing any reluctance on her face. The young man stepped forwards and gave her a very long and tight hug before letting go of her.
"Well, where do you live? I can visit you after we finished establishing the office."
"Shibuya. Wait, you'll be working here?" Mai curiously asked him. Eugene smiled at her and wiggle his fingers like he was presenting her a surprise.
"Yup! My brother and I will be starting a ghost hunting business next year!" He answered happily. Mai raised her eyebrows in amusement. Mai knew that he can see ghost but she never thought they would use it in business. Well, there are so many hauntings in Japan so might as well take advantage of it to make money.
"Though, paranormal research is not well accepted in this country but I think it will be great to study the country's culture and its connection to paranormal and stuff!"
"Research? I thought you'd be using your abilities and solve cases like we did on Miura Suzuki-san. Never though you'll operate like Oliver Davis." Mai commented light heartedly but the respect she had for Eugene increased a bit.
Eugene flinched after hearing that familiar name. He turned to look at Mai but she doesn't show any signs of realization that the surname of the man he uttered is the same as his. Eugene slapped himself for carelessly telling her his full name that night! He is so sure that his brother will really kill him after this. He was pulling his hair when Mai turned towards him.
"Are you trying to ruin your appearance on your date? Stop pulling your hair and fix it!"
Mai scolded him. Eugene followed her command while they're waiting for a taxi. Mai's luggage is placed by her side as he stood on the young woman's other side. Mai raised her left arm and hailed a taxi. The driver left the car to help Mai with her luggage. Eugene, who is taught to be a gentleman by his mother, opened the car door for her.
"Eugene." The young man's hand froze at the call of his name. It was the first time Mai had call his first name. Indigo met brown and he could tell how serious the young woman is beside him. Mai pursed his lips before speaking up.
"For the rest of your trip, be sure not to go outside after 8PM."
"What?" Eugene's eyes aimlessly gazed at Mai, watching her get on the passenger's seat. The slamming of the door wake him up and opened his mouth to ask again. This time, his voice is as serious as Mai used a while ago.
"Mai, what do you mean?"
"It's either you listen or die. Your choice. We'll meet again if you're still alive." Mai didn't meet his eyes and told the driver to drive off. Eugene wanted to ask more but the car already went. He tried calling Mai's phone number but the latter didn't answer. She only left him a message cheering her up on his date.
Mai arrived at her house after her trip. She sighed remembering his face again. Disappointment and sadness are blooming inside her heart. She promised herself not to get so close to a person with a tragic death but she still went and get along with that man.
That man, Eugene, will die during his travel.
She saw his future after she accidentally 'touched' his soul in the elevator. At exactly 9:47PM October 16, a week from now, he will be involved in a car accident. It was very dark and he will be crossing a road on his way back to his hotel. It is not the same hotel in Nagano so it seems like he moved to another place at that time. He got hit by a rushing red car.
The driver, a woman, panicked after seeing him lying on the road bleeding a few meters away from her car. But instead of helping him and sending him to the hospital, she got into her car again and ran her car over the battered body of Eugene.
Mai can still remember her heart almost stopping when the tires were pressed unto his body like a rolling pin. This is not the most tragic death she had seen but she couldn't believe that the sunny Eugene would end up in the hands of a cruel person. But did he die after that? No, he wasn't dead. The driver thought he was dead after she ran over him but he is not. She dragged him to her trunk and Eugene must have felt like hell while she travelled to a junkshop. He was awake on the full process of her wrapping his body around in a yellow straw mat. And with every move that woman make him do, hellish pain would rush through his broken body.
Mai clenched her fists and went to her bathroom to take a cold bath. But the water reminded her of the woman who will throw her new found friend on a lake. That is how Eugene would die a week later. From the junkshop, the woman led his body to a lake, throwing him in to get rid of every evidence of her crime.
Mai is very angry. Upset that she couldn't do anything. She knew that even if she stayed by his side, she couldn't change his fate. If she get involved, she will only be in pain if fate decided to arrange his death again and she wasn't there to save him again. Mai couldn't glue herself to someone 24 hours. It is up to Eugene to save himself. If he truly believed what Mai said, he would take precaution. And if he really wanted to change his faith, maybe God would listen to his pleas and let him live.
Mai truly prayed that Eugene is one of the people whose fates changed. She doesn't know how did they changed their fates but Mai saw something in common between those people. One, they believed her warnings even if it sounds like crap and she looked like a crazy woman. Two, they truly wanted to change their ending. They try to analyze what she said and do something about it.
Of course some did these and died in the end so it is really up to God to listen to them. Mai shook her head and tried to distract herself with the work that Editor Souta left her.
A month later, the final volume of Mai's third novel came out and the first batch were all purchased in just a day. But in that very same day, the book readers flipped their readers after the last page. Her social media accounts were full of complaints and this time, they truly wanted to kill her.
The main character of the story DIED! And the ship that they are planning to sail was sunk AGAIN! So that was the cause of the reader's resentment. It is fortunate that Mai agreed to make a movie of her second novel or else, her PR wouldn't know what to do to appease her raging fans.
This is the reason why Editor Souta returned her draft and wants her to rewrite it again while Mai was on a vacation. Of course, Mai forced him to accept the ending and published it after a few changes. Mai also didn't escaped Yukino's series of complaints and dramas, especially when her favorite character died. She almost strangled Mai if not for Aunt Kawana, knocking some sense on her daughter.
