ARC III: PLEASE BE MY HUSBAND!

CHAPTER EIGHT: First Day In The Miyama Mansion.

God is really fair. He made geniuses but he also gave those defects and eccentricities. He gave riches but he threw those trials for them to overcome. And in exchange for a second life, Mai gained scary psychic abilities.

Mai cried her eyes out as her adrenaline forced her body to move at her fastest speed. She didn't mean for this to happen. In fact, if she knew this would happen, she shouldn't have come in this place. Is this the end? God may have given her an ability to see other person's death but why didn't He gave her the ability to change her own future?!

'Why?! Why is God fair?! Many people may say that he is not but He is really fair! Take this advice from a person who lived twice! Why is happening to me?!'

Mai felt that familiar chill again and closed her eyes while picking up her pace. She can feel the danger on her back. She knew that if that entity catch up to her, she would be done for! She didn't want to die! At least not on this way! She want her life to end on a peaceful way, not to be a sacrifice for something evil!

Spreading the light coming from her body in full power while running really exhausts her, both physically and mentally. But since she doesn't want to die yet, she threw the strings of complaints in his mind and focus on surviving. She didn't even see her idol's face yet. How could she die?!

Oliver sighed exasperatedly as his older brother gather a group of people in their new office. Not only are they loud but they also kept on dragging him into joining their little chats. They were only working in Japan for three weeks now but this bubbly brother of his already made friends in such a short period of time. Well, Oliver is not against that but he really wish they would leave him alone.

They met these 'friends' through Gene's girlfriend, Hara Masako. And they had been working together ever since their first case in Japan a week ago. They may be rowdy but Oliver had to admit that all of them are quite capable in this kind of industry.

Hara Masako, a medium celebrity. Oliver don't like that she's a public figure but her psychic skills are real deal. She is his brother's girlfriend for about two years now? To be honest, Oliver didn't think their relationship will work but surprisingly, their romantic relationship improved after seeing each other face to face a year ago.

Next is Yasuhara Osamu. He is a law student but he is quite intelligent. He is the one who first to get information about the first case of SPR. He is also a close university friend of Hara Masako.

Brown, John. He is one of the youngest Catholic priests Oliver had the chance of meeting. This young man is also Oliver's favorite among them. Why? Cause he is quite and his exorcism skills are impressive. He is also their first client.

Their first case is about a series of possession in their church orphanage. Apparently no matter what the young priest do to drive away the ghost, he won't be drive away and kept possessing children, which cause damages to their bodies. With the information they got from Yasuhara, they helped the ghost moved on by finding his body.

The ghost is a boy named Kenji who died 30 years ago. He couldn't speak and was autistic. His father left him in the church while he go off to work but the father never came back. The child died in winter and the residing priest couldn't find him.

During their investigation, the ghost who is possessing another child's body mistakenly took Lin, their technician in their team, and stuck to him like a leech. Lin handled the child pretty well. Maybe because he got experience with his first child. Lin kept the ghost company while they find a way to help the innocent ghost to move on.

In the end, with Eugene's vision, they found that Kenji's body or skeletons to be exact was just nearby. It was placed beside one of the statues on the church. 30 years ago, that church was under construction and the child must have climbed up to that statue using the scaffoldings. The ghost moved on after they found his remains.

Also, in this very case, they met two different individuals. They were also friends with Hara Masako and Yasuhara Osamu. They coincidentally met them around the area and forcefully joined the investigation. They are Takigawa Houshou and Matsuzaki Ayako.

The former is a known bassist, singer and a songwriter. Yasuhara told them he is part of a band before but he went solo after they disbanded. He tied his hair in a low pony tail and he usually wear punk-style outfits. And believe or not, he is a Buddhist monk. And he really could do exorcisms. He tried driving Kenji but the ghost still went to possess another child. Nevertheless, it proves that he is quite skilled but not to the extent where Oliver would bow his head.

The last one, Matsuzaki Ayako, is a self-proclaimed Shinto priestess. She doesn't look like priestess at all. She doesn't look pure because of her thick makeup and stylish way of dressing. She also doesn't look his age. She looks older. Oliver never seen her do exorcisms but the charms she made for he possessed children in the orphanage are reliable. Lin already verified it.

"I had accepted a case. "Oliver blurted out before drinking the mediocre tea Eugene had made. Oliver missed the coffee shop he frequented in England. At least they make a good tea more than his brother.

"Huh? The one Madoka told you to accept?" Eugene asked, raising his right eyebrow. "I thought you plan on rejecting the case since there are many people involved."

"Yes. But Madoka insist that I take it." Oliver answered as Eugene laugh. "I bet she made you suffer until you agree!" Eugene said as he laughed more, seeing his brother's frown. He also turned his head away in disdain.

"UH, who is Madoka?" Ayako asked tilting her head side wards in confusion.

"She is Lin's wife." Eugene answered surprising the whole bunch of people around him.

"What?! He has a wife?!"

"Well, yeah. He is not emotionally incapable after all." Eugene answered, smirking after he heard a sneeze coming from the other office, where Lin is.

"Damn. He's married. I was planning to chase him" Ayako grumbled, disappointed.

"Well, even if you chase him now, you wouldn't be able to subdue him. You're old- OUCH!" Takigawa-san yelled in pain after Ayako's designer bad met his head. This is a normal occurrence between the two of them. They didn't even notice that they argue like an old married couple.

Lin Madoka is their technician, Lin Koujo's wife. They had a five-year-old son and she is currently pregnant with their second child. This is why she couldn't come with them. She is the chief of their laboratory and Oliver's mentor. She thought him how to ghost hunt and she's one of the people who can push the prideful Oliver around.

"So, what is the case all about?" Masako asked before a war break out.

"It is in the Miyama Mansion in Suwa Province. The client is the former prime minister."

Oliver was reluctant to take these group shameless rabbles with him to their next case but he figured they need their help in carrying and setting up their equipment during their stay. Hara Masako also got an invitation from the Miyama Mansion so she collaborated with the SPR, an office that Oliver established in Japan.

The office was called 'Shibuya Psychic Research' but in truth, that name was just a cover and it was a Japanese branch of the British Society of Psychical Research in England. The twins also uses alias while staying in the country. Oliver uses 'Shibuya Kazuya' while Eugene uses 'Shibuya Yuujin'. His alias still sounds like his first name but his brother is the one who picks it so Oliver couldn't really do something about it.

"Ugh! That woman! Why isn't she answering me?! It's been a year!" Eugene anxiously yelled as he threw his phone to the front seat in the van. He crossed his arms and pouted. Masako laughed at him and coaxed her childish boyfriend.

Oliver narrowed his eyes, staring at his brother before following them to the car. He picked up Gene's phone and saw the familiar strings of numbers on the strings. They had been calling this number for almost a year now butu none of their calls were answered.

The owner of this number is a young woman named Taniyama Mai, according to Eugene. He met her in Nagano a year ago in his first trip in Japan. This woman had warned him not to go out after 8PM before parting ways. His twin didn't know what that mean until Oliver called him in the middle of the night.

On October 16 last year, Oliver had accidentally used psychometry as he rummaged through Eugene's wardrobe. Psychometry, also called psychoscopy, is the ability to obtain information about a person or an object by touch. Oliver can see the past of an object or the object's owner by touching something and he accidentally used this ability on Eugene's clothes while looking for something to borrow.

Though that, Oliver saw how his brother 'die'. He was hit and ran over a car before he was thrown to a lake to die. And every pain and emotion his brother felt in that moment also hit Oliver hard while experiencing it all first hand. In panic, he called Eugene right away and he couldn't believe his twin was well and alive after the call were connected. For the first time in his life, Oliver was happy that the vision he got from using his abilities are wrong.

The two of them talked about it and Eugene also told him about the warning he got from the woman called Taniyama Mai. Eugene heeded her warning and didn't stay out after 8PM. He usually stayed with his girlfriend and went to her house. Oliver was still worried about him so he sent Madoka to accompany him in his trip.

They tried to contact Taniyama Mai from the number Eugene gave them but nobody answered. They had been trying for so long but they didn't get nay respond. Their parents were very grateful to that person but there wasn't a chance to meet her. Eugene told them that she lives in Shibuya but how could they search for a person in such a populated place? Taniyama and Mai are also common names in this country.

They gave up but his brother still wanted to see that person to thank him. Oliver sighed for the nth time before thrusting Eugene's phone in his pocket. Lin started the car before going off.

The caretaker, Ohashi-san, met them at the entrance and introduced them to other investigators he had first invited and stayed. Unfortunately, two people had already disappeared and some investigators had backed out and only two agencies left to investigate. Both of them are the companions of the two people who disappeared.

They saw an old woman crying and begging them to help her find her assistant. Her name is Igarashi Chie, a professor at National Defense academy. Her assistant, Suzuki Nao, had been missing for more than 5 hours now and she's getting anxious as the time passes. The other agency is called Minami Psychic Research center and they had an old man who they claimed is Dr. Oliver Davis.

Eugene almost laughed out loud at them. The young man couldn't believe everyone thought his brother is an old man. Well, his works does look like it was written by an old man. This is also the reason why Madoka had forced Oliver to accept this case. She wanted him to expose this man and his companions and let the former prime minister punish them. It would also save his and the BSPR's image by clearing this disgrace.

Atsugi Hideo, an assistant from the Minami Psychic Research center was the first one to disappear. He is missing for almost a day now but the president, Minami Remei, looks so smug and kept on bragging about that fake Oliver Davis.

Takigawa stared at the fake with such admiring eyes. Yasuhara, John and Ayako also couldn't hide their amazement. They couldn't believe they had seen someone famous in the parapsychological world. Takigawa was so excited that he froze on his feet. He literally stood still like all of his organs had stopped working.

Eugene and Masako, who knew the truth giggled at his reaction. Oliver looked away from them while Lin gave a small smirk. After the introduction, Oliver proceed to interview both separate group.

"When did Atsugi-san disappeared?"

"Yesterday, about 10 in the morning. We were walking around to find some ghosts but he suddenly disappeared after I left my eyes off him for a second."

"Is there a possibility that he left you without saying any goodbyes"

"Ohashi-san said that all of the doors are only locked in the inside but the locks are untouched that morning so Atsugi-san might not have left the mansion. His luggage and personal items are also still in the mansion. But I think he left in panic after witnessing Igarashi-sensei's séance."

The president, Minami-san, answered Oliver's questions lightheartedly like it wasn't important. He and that fake left after Oliver said that they can leave. Oliver ordered them to set up the base while he continued gathering information with Lin. He told them not to be alone and reminded Eugene to watch out. Eugene complied and Oliver couldn't help but to feel uneasy while they're in this house. He then went to ask questions to the old teacher.

"You said your assistant also disappeared like Atsugi-san. Are her belongings still with you?" Oliver asked. The old teacher nodded and gave him a contact lenses holder that was owned by her assistant.

"She is nearsighted and she couldn't go alone without her contact lenses. Her clothes and money is still with me. It would be impossible for her to leave."

"When did she disappear?"

"Around seven in the morning."

"Is it okay if I borrow these for a while?" Oliver asked her, carefully holding the case of the contact lenses.

"Yes."

Oliver and Lin left the old teacher with Ohashi-san before helping out the others to set up the base. The report from Ohashi-san was on the table. This mansion is a mountain villa for the Miyama Family. The original mansion was built in Meiji 10, in 1877. The building is said to to renovated so much that there is hardly any remains from the original structure.

The one who built this mansion was the later family head, Miyama Kaneyuki. He owned a lot of large plot of land in Suwa region. He owned a silk-spinning factory and then devoted himself to philanthropy. He built orphanages and charity hospitals. But he went bankrupt in the financial panic in Meiji 40 (1907) and lost some of his businesses and interests. He died in 1910, three years later.

Ohashi-san claimed that he had never seen anything supernatural in this house after three weeks of living her but some of the staffs did feel something unusual like fire foxes and strange sounds coming from nowhere. Besides the two missing investigators, there are also other reported disappearance in this mansion before Ohashi-san and his staff came.

A teenager was reported missing in the early weeks of February. It is said that he and his friends went there to do a little test of courage but the teenager disappeared in the middle of the night. Locals and a rescue team went to the mansion after the teenager's friends went to ask some help to search for the missing person. But a 21-year-old volunteer disappeared during the search.

With so many missing reports this year, Oliver couldn't help but to worry for their safety, especially for his idiotic trouble-magnet of a brother. These rabbles are currently having a tea-break after setting up the base. Oliver turned to them after reviewing all the data Ohashi-san gave to them.

"Hara-san, Yuujin, any information?"

"There are many spirits in this mansion. Well, more than fifty spirits. I couldn't count them all because I get dizzy. I also couldn't speak with them. They don't even know they are dead." Eugene answered.

"They are also full of regret, sadness and resentment. If you like, I would perform a séance to gather more data you want."

"No! I will do it! It is dangerous and we don't know what happened here for this mansion to contain so many spirits." Eugene immediately disagreed with her idea, looking so sweet and worried for his girlfriend. It is so sweet that it made their friends a bit sick.

"No, Gene. You have been a trouble-magnet since a long time ago. What if you get injured while summoning a spirit?" Masako replied but her lips is hooked up happily because of her boyfriend's worry. The exorcists and Yasuhara turned their heads away, not wanting a dose of their public display of affection.

"I am a professional-"

"I would like to stop you from proclaiming your love to the world and start doing something productive." Oliver's cold tone interrupted them and gave Gene a measuring tape used in construction.

"The mansion do not have a blueprint so I want you to measure every room in the mansion. Make sure to measure every room." Oliver added, repeating his point with a cols smirk pasted on his face. Eugene felt a child on his back as he straightened his posture. The temperature in the room is also colder than a second ago.

"And since you're not doing anything special at the moment, you may join Eugene in his task. Make sure not to separate and always stay in groups. Am I understood?"

"Yes, Sir Kazuya!" They all answered, scared at the menacing face Oliver is making. Beside some of them joined the investigation after promising Oliver to listen to all his commands. So no matter how angry they are, a promise is a promise.

Masako was feeling a bit uncomfortable because of the spirits so she stayed with Lin in the base. Takigawa-san opened the door and they all went out to the hallway. Takigawa-san, Eugene and Matsuzaki-san will be the one who will measure the rooms while Oliver and John would go find Ohashi-san to borrow some tools. But they heard a nearing footsteps coming from the dark hallway.

"Kazuya, I can feel an evil presence!" Eugene informed his brother. The exorcists felt it too as they prepared for an impromptu exorcism. But they saw no ghost coming for them but a young woman running towards their direction.

"The presence is gone."

"Wait, who is that?"

"Ah? That woman is familiar." Eugene said as the young woman was just a few meters away from them. His eyes went wide at the sight of her face but before he called for her, the young woman already spread her arms and embraced his brother who is standing beside him. Oliver stood frozen at the sudden tight hug. He felt his brain stopped working for a while at the words she said to him.

"Please be my husband!"

Oliver: "..."

Eugene: "..."

SPR: "..."

"She just proposed……right?"
