ARC III: PLEASE BE MY HUSBAND!
CHAPTER TWELVE: Congratulations, You just Seduced Her!
Oliver buttoned up his shirt while hiding behind a bush. His face is so red that it could be compared to a ripe tomato. He had never been humiliated like this in his entire life! And his brother's unstoppable laughter added to the fire that is raging inside his head! This is not funny! Not funny at all! He had been taken advantage of! And as his dear brother, Eugene just laughed at him?
He turned his head beside him and saw Lin pursing his lips and his shivering shoulders. Oliver knew he is laughing. He doesn't know what was happening with this man. He was just vigilant in front of that woman but he is clearly enjoying his embarrassment. Oliver glared at him as he wrapped himself up in his jacket.
Oliver pat the hairs around his person, eyes full of disdain as he walked towards the client and Yasuhara. Oliver was sure the lawyer had researched more about this house and Miyama Kaneyuki so he wants to know the results. Yasuhara saw him coming and brought out a folder from his bag.
"Kazuya-san, I had dug up something." Yasuhara told him, grinning victoriously. This caught all the people's attention as they walked near the lawyer.
"I have found out that Miyama Kaneyuki have a terminal disease since young. From childhood, he had been told that he wouldn't live for long. Supposedly, he was just sightseeing but people say he was actually visiting foreign doctors. After that, Miyama Kaneyuki apparently lived her, in this mansion, accompanied by two maidservants. No one knew where they came from nor who they are."
"Additionally, the locals grew suspicious of the disappearances and the odor coming from this mountain villa and they suspect that Kaneyuki had been murdering those missing people. They accused him of being a murderer and an occult master so they had planned to burn this house with Kaneyuki in it. But by the time they arrived at the mansion, they heard Kaneyuki's death. They even saw his body inside the mansion."
"The locals left and Kaneyuki's son, Miyama Hiroyuki, inherited his possessions. Because of the resentment of the people, he was forced to give almost half of his inheritance to them as a compensation. He also lived in this mansion but left after a year of living there. After that, he renovated it every year, covering the original house that we have witnessed a while ago."
"Moreover, some staff found this portrait while packing up their belongings." Yasuhara told them as one of the staff showed them a small portrait of a man wearing traditional clothes.
"That is Miyama Kaneyuki. If you flipped the portrait, you can see writing on the back."
'SELF-PORTRAIT, URADO'
"Urado?" Matsuzaki asked while looking at the characters.
"I don't know what that mean but Kaneyuki had been using that as an alias while he traveled overseas. That is it for the report. Kazuya-san, what do you think?"
Ohashi-san looked at the boss of one of the agency he had hired. He had sent them invitation after looking at their former client's positive reviews and how low their profile is. His hopes were on the Minami Psychic Research Center and Oliver Davis. But after the Linen Foundation's representative, Taniyama Mai told him how they are acting suspicious, he found out that they are fraud after some investigation!
Ohashi-san was quite impressed by the work done by the SPR. They left no room for doubt and they investigate and gather evidence for them to judge and believe. Ohashi-san was quite satisfied by this and hope that his master would also be satisfied by this result after they requested explosives from him.
He was also quite shocked by the discoveries the SPR found inside that mansion. From the night vision camera one of them had, they saw the skeletons and the execution room through the monitor. Moreover, they didn't miss to see the corpses of the people that had recently been missing. Ohashi-san can almost feel the headache coming.
"Urado. I think I know what that mean." Oliver spoke, gathering all of their attention.
"Adding the clues we had so far, I think the meaning of that name is Vurado, or in English pronunciation, VLAD."
John widened his eyes in realization and gasped. The others look at them cluelessly, eyes looking for answers.
"What?"
"Vlad is a character from the book, DRACULA." John answered for the, face and tone laced with disgust. He must have abhorred the character of that novel.
"A vampire?" Mai asked him in disbelief. She couldn't see the connection of that fictional character and the case they have now. Yeah, Kaneyuki and that vampire thirst for blood but the former doesn't suck it.
"For those who didn't know, Dracula is a horror novel written by Bram Stoker in 1897. It gave birth to the domain of 'Vampire Culture' in literature. But in actual fact, Dracula was modeled from a real person. Dracula was a Duke in Transylvania's neighboring area of Wallachia. He was known as Vlad III and commonly called 'Vlad, the Impaler'."
"At that time in Europe was frequently invaded by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. Because the area of Wallachia is very near to turkey, that area was the frontline of the battle. Furthermore, even if the king of Wallachia was overthrown, that did not stop the power struggle. Vlad was an extremely mysophobic duke, he hated being known as idle; he is well known to be ruthless, especially towards his enemies. Enemies who were captured by him were mostly executed by impalement with a spear."
Mai can almost feel it. The inspiration while looking at her dear husband's serious face and the words coming out of his mouth. Her brain is already coming up with a plot for a new novel and a new spring that will shock those readers to death. Mai smiled at her Dear husband while her brain start working on her first chapter.
"This Vlad's father was Vlad II, known as 'Vlad Dracul'. Dracul in Romania had the meaning of devil."
"So the father is a devil then the son is an impaler?" Matsuzaki asked, disdainful of those people. Gene and Masako, who stood beside her, also had the same face.
"Yes. In 1431, Vlad II was given the name of 'Dracul' by the Holy Roman Emperor and because this was a conferred title, no one called him 'Devil'. I think he should have been called 'Dracul, the Dragone Duke' to be accurate. In Romanian, 'Son of the Dragon' is Dracula hence, as a result of being Vlad II's son."
"After Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' was published, the name became a synonym for vampire. Though Vlad had been notorious for his cruel deed, he was long forgotten before Stoker had published his book. It caused it to become the center of attention once more. Then, right now, the name 'Dracula' is reverberating through the world."
"So that's how it is."
"Furthermore, Countess Bathory was frequently discussed with Vlad III. Elizabeth Bathory was called 'Blood Countess'."
'Of course! That is what I am missing!" Mai almost screamed in realization. She couldn't believe she had missed this information after experiencing all those deaths. Eugene also nodded in agreement. He remembered Noll teaching him these when he failed his quiz in World History.
"Elizabeth Bathory was a countess who lived in 15th Century Hungary. She did not have any clear connection with Vlad but a lot of people speculate whether the two of them are related by blood. Countess Bathory was afraid her beauty would fade. With young girls as sacrifice, she believed that if she bathed in blood of young girls she would be able to preserve her own beauty. She killed young females placed the blood she harvested from them into a bathtub, and then soaked her body inside."
"Around 1900, Miyama Kaneyuki traveled abroad and Dracula had long been published and still well-known. Kaneyuki must have come across it and learned of its backstory that includes Vlad and Countess Bathory who are most commonly confused. For some reason, Kaneyuki wanted to use Vlad as a pseudonym but couldn't find an appropriate Kanji for it. Then he chose the two characters, 'Ura do'."
"Following the belief of the Blood Countess, Miyama Kaneyuki or Urado must have thought that he would prolong his life by taking the blood of young people and bathing in it, hence the missing people and killing. The evidence for our claim is the footage caught by Lin's camera and the video I took with this camcorder." Oliver stated while showing a small camcorder in his hands.
Ohashi-san collapse on the ground in fear and shock. He couldn't believe that this is what happened in the past. If this got out, his wife, children and his master's reputation would be torn apart. They would be the center of criticism and disdain from the people.
"What should be do now, Shibuya-san?" Ohashi-san asked in daze.
"I would suggest two options. One, to leave this place be and rot. Two, burn it until nothing was left." Oliver answered him as the other exorcist nodded in agreement.
"What about the corpse and skeletons that was still inside?" Some staff asked them.
"It would be better to leave it to the police. However, the people who would go inside should be at least around 50 years and above. If you are still hesitant to enter after witnessing what happened, our team could provide you some protective charms and it would be best to enter during daylight."
"Thank you, Shibuya-san." Ohashi-san nodded and bowed his head low. He stood up and went away to contact his master about it.
"Macchan! Taniyama Mai!"
Mai sighed at the familiar loud voice. From the worry tone, Mai could tell that her assistant had been crying along the way. Yukino spread her arms and pulled the tiny brunette into a tight hug while crying hysterically.
"Stop it, Yukino!" Mai cried out while trying to fill her lungs with air. She could have swear this woman would kill her instead of the demon who tried to kill her twice now.
"Macchan, how dare you! I almost have a heart attack when Ohashi-san said you entered the haunted mansion! And why is your hair short?! WAAAH! You are almost killed right?! How could you charge in like that! My mom would kill me if something happened to you!"
Mai nonchalantly nodded to her, while bringing out her handkerchief to wipe the snot and tears on her assistant's face. Mai coaxed her for a few minutes before she had calm down.
John gasped as he recognized the crying woman in front of them. John saw her a year ago. His fellow priest, Father Toujo submitted a request to the Linen Foundation after learning their good deeds for the unfortunate children and the foundation accepted their request and agreed to sponsor their church and orphanage. He couldn't believe that Taniyama-san have connection with the foundation's acting chairwoman. They seem more intimate than just acquaintances too.
"I will not do this again. I would send to somewhere haunted again!" Yukino declared and pulled Mai towards the car. Sensing Yukino's intention to leave with her, Mai stopped in her tracks and struggled to pull her arms away.
"Wait! Wait! Stop!" Mai yelled as Yukino let go of her arm. Yukino raised her eyebrow and tilted her head in question.
"I need to talk to someone first before going."
"But I am busy! We need to leave now or else I will be late for the contract signing in Kyoto."
"Then why don't you go to your meeting and I will just go home alone?"
"No way! You said so yourself that your life was in danger! And look at your hair! How can I leave you alone when you look like that?! You want my mom to murder me?! You know that you are her most favorite child and treats you better than us, her blood children! And what will happen to your novels-"
Mai immediately stopped her by covering her mouth. Mai sighed exasperatedly as she sneak a peek at Oliver and Eugene who is looking at them. Mai knew they were listening to what they are saying because of this assistant's big mouth.
"Okay. This will only take a while. Five minutes at most. Okay? Just wait in the car." Mai answered as Yukino nodded with a sigh. She walk towards the car while Mai faced the SPR with a smile. She took out a pen and a paper and wrote her new phone number and gave it to Eugene.
"I damaged my phone after we parted in Nagano. From the looks of it, you must have wanted to contact me after you survived that night. I will later answer your questions as many as possible. We can just meet at Grey Café in Dogenzaka, Shibuya." Mai explained even before Eugene spoke a word.
"My friend is really busy right now so I will have to leave with her. Thank you for your hard work in this case. You can take care of the rest, right?" Mai bowed to them and smiled. The people in front of her reciprocated her smile and bowed. The brown haired woman smiled even brighter when she saw Oliver looking at her. She immediately spread her arms and envelope him in a tight hug.
"AAH! I don't want to leave my Dear Husband!" Mai pouted while nuzzling her face in Oliver's neck. He doesn't wear a cologne but her nose caught the scent of black tea. He must have love tea for him to smell like it. Mai made a note to learn how to brew tea to show off in their next meeting.
Oliver stiffened at the sudden contact. In front of him, he can see his co-workers' teasing smiles and this woke him up, raging. He raised his hands and pushed away the woman who is clinging to him like a koala. Instead of being offended. Mai showed off a smile and held his hand.
"Dear Husband, may I have the honor of knowing your name?" Mai asked that earned a few giggles from other people.
'The hell?! You proposed to him but you didn't know his name?'
Oliver glared at the young woman and slapped away her hands. He looked away from her and Eugene, together with his friends, can see the pink on his earlobes. This made them laugh even more as Mai flashed a teasing smile. She was quite satisfied that she managed to make her Dear Husband embarrassed.
"I have no intention of giving my name to strangers." Oliver answered, crossing his arms grumpily. He moved his head to glare at the young woman once more.
"Instead of wasting your time chasing men, why don't you go and learned how to increase your IQ that rivaled a stupid bird? I spare no attention to brainless people." Oliver answered ruthlessly but that insult didn't reached Mai, who just laughed at him.
"I can't help but be brainless after looking at you. Dear Husband is so beautiful that I can't take my eyes off you."
"I see. At least you have a good taste but I have to apologize. You and I cannot fit in my mirror."
The people around him was stumped on how arrogant and narcissistic he is. It was the first time they had seen him like this. But Lin and Eugene scoffed at him, knowing that this is how Oliver reject a persistent woman. They all thought Mai was turned off by this but the young woman's face just brightened even more as she held Oliver's hands again.
"Wow! Dear Husband is so incredible! True, I really have a superior taste, otherwise, how could I like you? Oh! Forget about the name. I found something that fits you perfectly." Mai squealed like a fan, acting like his words are the law. She was not a bit hurt by Oliver's conceit and insults.
"Naru! My Dear Husband Naru, the Narcissist!" Mai added, smiling at him. Her face held no humor nor pain. In fact, it was taunting Oliver. That face is clearly telling him, 'No-matter-what-you-do-You-are-still-my-Dear-Husband'.
Lin and Eugene widened their eyes at the Japanese accented pronunciation of Oliver's nickname. But thinking about the meaning of the new nickname, the two of them smirked in amusement. But the suspicion is still there.
'But… How did I not think of that name before?'
They shivered at the sudden display of a Domineering-CEO aura coming from a young woman. Oliver frowned at her and tried to snatch his hand back but Mai leaned own and pressed her lips at the back of his hand. The action freeze him again like stone as he watched her motionlessly. Mai saw his frozen state and took advantage of it, kissing him on his cheeks.
When her lips touched his skin, Oliver's brain short-circuited. He couldn't think of anything because of shock. Of course he isn't the only one. The others around them also stared at this shameless woman in shock. Seeing how he still stood frozen after stealing a kiss, Mai's eyes twinkled as she thought of a mischievous thought.
'Oh God, he's so shy! He looks so cute!' Mai beamed as something in her heart swell. She felt warm in the pit of her stomach. She almost wanted to scream. Reaching out her hands to the back of his head, she lean in and pressed her lips on his.
"Oh God." John turned his back on them, while doing the sign of the cross. His face grew red as he muttered a prayer. His friends also couldn't help but to turn red in embarrassment. It is like they're interrupting something.
"Naru." Mai called out when their lips separated, satisfied at the softness of his lips and the blush on his face. As if a bucket of iced water poured on to him, Oliver pushed the woman away from him, his face getting redder as the he glare at Mai.
"I am not your Naru!"Oliver recovered faster this time but as always, in front of Mai, he could only glare. Mai beamed at him, enjoying his shy version. He looks so cold and detached but he also has this kind of sight. It made Mai happy knowing that she caused all of this. She leaned in while Oliver stepped back to avoid further abrupt kisses. "Tell me your name then."
Oliver ignored her but Mai isn't the type to give up easily. She stepped closer to him and cut the small gap he previously managed to make. Oliver panicked, thinking she might do the thing she did a while ago. In an angry voice, he answered. "Shibuya! Shibuya Kazuya."
'Lies.'
"Are you sure?" Mai asked with her lips hooked in amusement. Her intuition is clearly telling her that his man, who she chose as her future husband, lied about his name.
"It is my name. Why wouldn't I be sure?" Oliver answered her, thinking about some possible reasons why would she ask that. Then, he remembered Lin calling him by his real nickname.
'Did she deliberately nicknamed me Naru?'
Masako, Eugene, Lin and Oliver suspiciously stared at Mai who confirmed her intuition from their faces. From those reactions, Mai can easily deduce that other than the four of them, the exorcists and their researcher doesn't know a thing about their true identities. And this made Mai very curious.
Why is her Dear husband lying about his name? If she remember correctly, Eugene doesn't seem to be lying when he introduced himself to her. He clearly said his name is Eugene Davis. Mai also did thought that this man is related to her idol because of their surnames but there are countless of Davis in England and she doesn't even know where Eugene came from.
'They are also involved in paranormal society. Could it be -?'
Mai cringed with so many thoughts entering her mind. She doesn't want to think now but her intuition is telling her that the twins may be related to her idol. She made a note to ask her secretary about this. She had not touched the clips they sent her and she was dying to know whether or not she struck gold.
Mai smiled victoriously for the last time before slightly bowing to them again. Her Dear husband may have lied to her but that doesn't turn her off. In fact, she found it so exciting that she wants to uncover all of his secrets one by one. She snuck a kiss on Oliver, catching him off guard again, before leaving.
"I'm going! Please miss me, Dear Husband!"
'For how long is she going to call me that?'
Mai opened the door of the car and entered. Yukino is still looking at her with a shocked expression. The flirtatious actions of her little boss did not go unnoticed by her. She thought Mai is a member of the LGBTQ since she was so against romance but she was just flirting with that cute guy!
'Are her hormones finally working?! Then.. Then.. Her next novels will now have-'
"NO." Mai cut her thoughts off before Yukino even say it out loud. The older woman pouted at her. She didn't say anything but she knew Mai would be taking her words back sooner or later. If Mai is really interested in that man, then it wouldn't be long before she fall in love. And once that happen, Yukino and the publishing company would be reaping benefits. Yukino secretly grinned. She decided to find out more about that man and cheer for him.
While thinking of what happened just now, Yukino suddenly heard her boss sigh. She turned to look at Mai, thinking there might be a problem but there is a happy smirk pasted on her face!
"His lips is soft. Not bad."
'Whoever you are, congratulations! You seduced just this little ancestor.'
