Chapter 17: Comfort and Joy
Near the Fentons' Ghost Portal, Tucker, Sam and Jazz anxiously waited until Danny returned from the Ghost Zone. "I don't like this." Jazz commented. "Shouldn't at least one of us have gone with him?"
"Danny's tougher than you give him credit for, Jazz." Sam replied.
"You're not saying this just so I won't get involved with his battles again, are you?" Jazz accused Sam.
"Does one thing rule out the other?" Tucker teasingly asked.
Danny then showed up. "Is it safe?" He asked. "Did Mom and Dad miss me?"
"If they ask, you're trying to decide what to give Barbara for Christmas." Jazz replied to her brother.
"A new PDA!" Tucker suggested.
"An autographed photograph of Supergirl!" Sam teased, not knowing the Girl of Steel was one of the girls Danny could've chosen instead of Barbara.
"A psychology book about how to deal with insecure boyfriends!" Jazz teased as well.
"Jokes aside, what did Clockwork say?" Sam asked.
"He told me that, for as long as the non-ghostly bad guys I stop are obviously doing illegal stuff, my ghostly heroics won't be considered a break of the Christmas Truce." Danny answered.
"Good." Sam commented. "After all, you're now a Leaguer. I just hope Barbara won't become jealous seeing you rub shoulders with superheroines like Supergirl, Batgirl and Starfire."
"Does she know about your secret, Danny?" Jazz asked Danny in surprise. "And, isn't Starfire a Teen Titan?"
"The Teen Titans are basically a cadet branch of the Justice League." Sam argued.
"And considering your warnings about entrapment, you shouldn't be surprised that she knows my secret." Danny commented.
"She figured it out on her own, right?" Jazz asked.
"She didn't dismiss it as a coincidence that Amity Park's superhero showed up in Gotham the same time a boy from Amity Park did, Jazz." Danny explained.
"And you didn't even deny it?" Jazz was even more surprised. "You're growing up."
After that conversation ended, they went to talk to Jack and Maddie. "Mom? Dad? Antonio is going to a ski resort this Christmas and invited me." She uneasily said and showed them a brochure. "What do you say?"
Jack gave a knowing glance. "Is that the same resort Barbara is going with a friend?"
"May I take a look at this brochure before I answer?" Danny asked and was given the brochure. "Yes!" He exclaimed.
"Oh, brother." Jazz muttered.
"Good!" Jack exclaimed. "Danny can go there to keep an eye on the both of you."
"Jack!" Maddie scolded her husband.
"Maddie, you know we can't go because someone must stay in Amity Park in case a ghost attacks." Jack replied, not understanding Maddie's objections.
"Jack, if Danny's going there, he's going to see Barbara." Maddie reminded her husband.
"Then they can make it a double date." Jack suggested.
"Don't! You" Dare!" Jazz demanded.
"You have our permission to go, Jazz." Maddie said.
"Maddie…" Jack pleaded.
"Our permission." She repeated with a frown and Jack backed off.
A few days later, Danny and Jazz left a train at a station near the ski resort. Antonio was already waiting for Jazz. "Merry Christmas, Jazz." He said and then noticed the boy with her. "And this must be your younger brother Danny."
"Yes and Merry Christmas to you too." Jazz happily replied. "Danny, this is my boyfriend Antonio Garcia."
"Nice to meet you." Both boys told each other as they shook hands.
"Are you here to keep an eye on me?" Antonio asked Danny.
"If my Dad asks, yes." Danny answered, deciding to be honest. "I'm here to meet my girlfriend Barbara."
"And here I am." They heard as she approached them along…
"Kara?" Danny and Antonio asked and each one was surprised by the other's reaction. "Do you know her?" They asked.
"She's one of the girls I could've chosen instead of Barbara." Danny said.
"I also met her through the dating service and… wow, this is awkward." Antonio commented. "Did you know she'd be here?"
"Barbara just said she'd be here with a friend." Danny explained. "I knew she and Kara are friends but I hoped she meant a friend from Gotham."
"Excuse me but, can't we leave this awkwardness for after we check in the resort?" Barbara suggested. As they walked around, she whispered to Kara. "Does Antonio know you're…"
"No, he doesn't." Kara answered and then whispered. "Which's a bad thing since my fear he wouldn't be as comfortable with it as Danny is was my reason not to consider him."
Inside the resort, they took three rooms. One for Antonio; one for Kara and Barbara; and one for Danny and Jazz. After they unpacked, Danny and Jazz decided to phone their parents. "Hi, kids." Maddie said. "How're things there?"
"Mom, remember when I said Barbara was coming here with a friend?" Danny asked.
"Yes, Danny." Maddie answered while worried about where Danny was going with.
"It's Kara!" Danny said.
"Who?" Maddie asked.
"One of the other girls Danny could've picked, Mom." Jazz answered for her brother.
"How awkward." Maddie commented and then Jack took the phone. "I don't blame Kara for not resisting the Fenton charm but I hope she accepts that you chose somebody else." He commented.
"That's not the worst." Danny said. "Antonio also knew Kara from the dating service."
"Hurry! Get her to say everything bad she knows about him!" Jack asked.
"I won't do it, Dad." Danny replied.
"Don't worry, son." Maddie reassured Danny. "Your father's just kidding. Riiiiiiiiight, Jack?"
Maddie's frown was so evident even Jack noticed it. "Yes, Maddie."
"Okay, Mom. Bye."
The next day, they took a lift to the top of a mountain. 'Why am I doing this?' Danny thought. 'Does the idea of Barbara thinking of me as a dork really scare me more than getting hurt skiing?'
"Danny?" Barbara called him. "Are you nervous?"
"No!" He quickly lied but then changed his mind. "I haven't been skiing in a while." As in never since, as he once told Alex, he's not into sports.
"Don't worry, Danny." Barbara reassured her boyfriend. "I'll be there with you. My real surprise was your sister's boyfriend having been once paired with Kara. Don't you find it odd he'd be paired with someone around our age?"
"Not really." Danny shrugged. "I've met some girls around Jazz's age."
Since neither Danny nor Barbara wanted to extend that talk afterwards, the rest of the lift was in silence. "Did everyone else had a comfortable ride?" Barbara asked once they arrived.
"Yes." Kara, Jazz and Antonio answered albeit Kara was secretly upset she couldn't have flown her way upwards without jeopardizing her secret identity. Jazz and Antonio were the first ones to slide their way down. Danny and the superheroines went after he got some encouragement from them. To their shock, an explosion created a snow barrier that stopped them. Having heard the explosion, Jazz and Antonio were too distracted to notice another snow barrier until they crashed on it. "What happened?" Antonio asked.
"You're surrounded now, Ranger." They heard a monster say. The monster looked like a skeleton with a military camouflage on one of his sides and had an army of bird-like mooks.
"Rito Revolto?" Antonio asked and frowned. He was so shocked he even forgot his girlfriend didn't know he's a Power Ranger. He just stepped off his skis.
"Do you know that monster, Antonio?" Jazz asked in confusion.
"It's not the first time I try to destroy this Ranger but now his friends aren't around." Rito said.
"Well, since there's no reason to hide anymore," Antonio commented and morphed into the Samurai Gold Ranger. While he fought Rito, Jazz managed to hold the bird-like monsters with a staff and some odd-looking weapon that has her father's face on it.
"May we help?" Danny Phantom asked as he showed up alongside Batgirl and Supergirl.
"A Kryptonian?" Rito asked. "No fair! I've got no Kryptonite with me!" He and the other monsters vanished.
"Thanks for the help, Justice League." The Gold Ranger said and Danny secretly felt flattered that a hero he never met would recognize him as a Leaguer.
"You're welcome, Power Ranger." Danny replied and then noticed he wasn't seeing Antonio. "Ranger, have you seen Anto… the boy who was skiing with that girl I've never seen before?"
"Your denial is too suspiciously specific, Danny Phantom." The Gold Ranger commented. "Or should I say Danny Fenton?"
"What?" Danny asked in shock. A shock that increased when the Gold Ranger unmorphed. "Antonio?" Danny and the superheroines asked.
"Batgirl and Supergirl know my name?" Antonio was surprised but soon connected the dots. "All of us have a lot to talk back in the resort." He commented.
Once they were back, they tried to make sense of the latest developments. "So, Rito Revolto is Rita Repulsa's brother?" Danny asked.
"Yes." Antonio explained.
"But why would he go after you?" Kara asked. "I know you're a Power Ranger but you're from a team that never got in Rita's way."
"One of the Mighty Moprhin' Rangers told me something about Master Vile, Rita and Rito's father, wanting to steal morphers to power up a way to turn Rita evil again." Antonio answered. "Now, whose turn to tell the truth is it?"
Kara raised her hand. "As you and Jazz learned today, assuming Danny did keep quiet…"
"I did." Danny quickly replied.
"I'm Superman's cousin Supergirl." Kara confessed. "I was afraid of telling you because I thought you had no heroic alter ego and wouldn't understand."
"But you told him." Antonio replied while pointing at Danny.
"He figured out when I slipped up by mentioning having a blind date as Supergirl in front of Phantom without knowing he and Fenton are the same Danny." Kara answered.
Barbara then decided to speak. "I became Batgirl when a corrupt cop framed my father as part of a plan to steal his position as the Police Commissioner." She didn't want to get into more details about her origin. "I figured out Danny's secret when both Fenton and Phantom showed up in Gotham the same day and, to be honest, Danny Phantom and Danny Fenton aren't that different."
"True." Antonio agreed. "It seems like you were in such a hurry to get rid of the Inviso-bill moniker you didn't take a lot of time to come up with a superhero name."
"It might've taken a role, I admit." Danny replied with a guilty smile.
"And how did you get your powers?" Antonio asked the halfa.
"Accident in my parents' lab." Danny answered.
"So, your parents know your secret and only speak ill of Phantom in public as a cover up?" Antonio asked.
"If only." Danny sighed. "They weren't at home when the accident took place. They refuse to accept things as good ghosts or humans with ghost powers."
"What about you?" Kara asked Antonio. "How did you become a Power Ranger?"
"There isn't much I can tell without revealing other Rangers' identities." Antonio explained and the others nodded. "Let's just say somebody connected to the Samurai Rangers believed me." He then remembered something. "Did you parents knew monsters would attack?" He asked Jazz. "You've brought those weapons."
"Actually, Dad expected me to use them on you." Jazz sadly explained.
After that awkward talk, they returned to their own rooms, leaving Barbara and Kara alone. "So, I suppose you and Antonio would be dating had you and him already known each other's secret back when it was time to make a choice." Barbara teasingly said.
"Probably but there's no point discussing it now." Kara answered. "He has a girlfriend now and that she happens to be Danny's sister just makes things even more awkward. I can always give Jimmy a chance."
"Okay, Kara." Barbara replied.
On their last day before leaving the resort, they exchanged Christmas gifts. "A necklace? Thank you, Danny!" Barbara said.
"And Sam suggesting a Supergirl-autographed picture." Jazz commented.
"Does she know?" Barbara asked.
"No." Danny answered. "It wasn't my secret to tell. It'd be different if I had your permission or you were a paranormal investigator."
"Did he meet one at the dating service?" Kara whispered to Barbara.
"I don't know and I'm not sure if I want to." Barbara answered and Kara nodded. Barbara then gave Danny her gift. A cap that looked like a Santa one except it's black where Santa's was red. "A secret nod to your alter ego."
"Thank you, Barbara." Danny replied.
"Speaking of alter egos, I don't mind your friends knowing I know yours but how will tell them that without revealing my secret?" Antonio asked.
"I know! I know!" Jazz eagerly said. "Just say you took a flight thinking nobody would see you but Antonio did."
"Okay." Danny uneasily replied as he remembered his close call with Dipper Pines and how Starfire learned his secret.
"That aside, here's your gift, Antonio." Jazz said and gave her boyfriend a scarf.
"Thank you, Jazz." Antonio replied and gave her a wristband."
"Thank you, Antonio." Jazz said.
Not dating anyone in the group, Kara just gave each one a pair of socks.
End chapter.
Author's Note: At first, I wanted Jazz to learn that Barbara knows Danny's secret in a similar way she did in NeoMark's Danny and Gwen but couldn't find a right moment.
Answer to Leonardo (Guest): Pelo menos os adultos do mal precisarão dar um tempo até que as coisas esfriem. Quanto à Star, a série Stranded me inspirou de fato. Já a vi recebendo essa comparação numa fanfic onde a Kim Possible é fictícia e queria ver essa comparação numa onde Kim Possible é tão real quanto a Star.
Answer to Guest: At first, I didn't care much about what became of them afterwards but, since they're being so missed, I might show one of them learning how much of a female dog karma can be.
