Chapter 1: Some Needed Deception

Nothing... There was only complete silence. Truly, silence is most peaceful noise to exist in the New World. Wait... no. I guess silence doesn't really count as a traditional noise, now does it? Well... screw it, I'm starting with that nonetheless. The subject concerning what is and what is not a noise comes nowhere as close as claiming the same importance as today's tale.

This great silence was especially comforting to someone such as Courier Six, who at one point would almost never get though a single evening without getting found in a position where she was forced to listen to people screaming in agonizing pain, enough gunfire to put the entire Capital Wasteland on alert, and enough explosions which would probably act as more than enough to wipe out the New World's entire population. What would the people who came next even call them? The Newer World?

As you can infer, it was a nice alteration for the Courier's ears. She was currently inside the Lucky 38's Presidential Suite that, much like with everything else in Vegas, was the rightful property to one Robert Edwin House. Obviously, that was all prior to the man finally getting put to rest in a proper and quick fashion once Six found out about his true intentions against the Brotherhood Of Steel. She wasn't going to let the BOS in the Mojave go extinct. Sure, they were certainly a flawed group, no one was going to argue with such facts. But still, they didn't earn such a fate. Besides, when the Legion attacked Hoover Dam, the BOS were willing to assist the NCR. In Six's mind this was more than enough to prove she made the positive choice.

Back to present Six, who was currently lying on the very comfortable mattress that came with the Lucky 38's Suite. It looked as though Veronica chose to leave Six asleep with no company to snuggle up next to, rather than give a few taps on the shoulder as a wake up call.

Veronica's absence was most likely the cause of some Brotherhood related issues. It made sense, given they recently found out about the Remnant's role against the Legion and now wanted some answers as to why the NCR would even accept the Enclave assistance. Six chose not to get involved in the issue.

There were quite a few occasions where Six crafted the spectacular idea to simply remain on that same mattress throughout the rest of the evening and into the night. Simply relaxing with nothing to worry about, no stress to occupy your mind and play games with it, no violent and unsettling scenery... That all sounds like a perfect combination, does it not? Well, to some it might. But not to someone such as the Courier, who couldn't seem to let a single night pass without first experiencing the seemingly never ending thrills the Mojave would keep on offering.

Today the same popular idea was nowhere to be found inside of Six's skull. For she had only moments ago received a new Quest. It was an actual Quest. It seemed like she wasn't given/received one in more than a whole year. It made sense, seeing as everyone in the Mojave was either finally getting along with one another, or they were previously killed when Six took up the long, unmarked, and personal Quest that came with cleansing the Mojave of any evil.

But it wasn't just the Quests that Six went without for such a long time. It was any form of excitement in general. No longer were people taking the time to shoot at and wage wars on each other. No longer were people looking to acquire the Companion's services.

Who exactly are the Companions? It is a small group Six created to act as the Mojave's own personal guardians. Veronica Santiago, Cass, Dean Domino, Follows-Chalk, Raul Tejada, and many more made up the Companion's forces. If anyone wanted to attack the Mojave or its people, they would first need to go through the Companions.

Back to the Mojave's current problems, at least in Six's eyes. The absolute worst absence was the fact that Deathclaws were no longer appearing in places that they obviously don't live in. It was the only thing aside from the excellent Repair services that made going to the Mojave Outpost even somewhat exciting.

Did those absences even matter to Six anymore? No, for she now possessed all the excitement she would ever need in the form of a single available Quest. Well, there were actually two available Quests. The other Quest was 'What's In The Name?' But in order to complete the Big MT Quest, Six needed to form an explanation she was not capable of gathering. See, if there's one thing Six doesn't possess, it's proper Intelligence. Which is odd, considering some feats she has performed.

Most of Six's past Quests were labeled with very confusing, sometimes entertaining, and full on laughable names. But this Quest was special regarding that factor for two specific reasons. For one, it didn't even come with a proper title. It was just several coded lines that didn't make any sense. And secondly, it didn't come with an actual objective for Six to complete. The only thing it would give was a marker leading to Primm.

Stepping off onto the mattress for the first time in quite a while, Courier Six quickly equipped the rare Desert Ranger Combat Armour she managed to recover in Zion. Nowadays she would always wear it whenever and wherever she traveled to. The stupid reason she gave to the others was that she favored the green eyes rather than the red eyes that came with the standard Ranger Combat Armour. In reality, she didn't the Survivalist's legend to fade, even if she was the only one who knew about it.

Immediately upon exiting the room, the Courier was accidentally shoved into a wall via a companion. This one in particular was named Arcade Gannon. Seeing as Arcade was currently outfitted in his Gannon Family Tesla Armour, it made sense that Six couldn't withstand such a shove, even an unintentional one. Lowering his stance, Arcade quickly assisted Six in getting up, and, even though it wasn't his fault, gave an apology.

"Damn, you're going to need to watch where you're going from now on. Still, sorry about that'' Arcade said, checking to make sure that Six didn't leave any impact marks on the wall. Six would always find a way to complain about even the smallest messes that were made in the Lucky 38. Hole in the wall? No one wanted to see that scolding. ''Last time I checked, Boone and I are the only ones that like to wake up this early in the morning." Cass, Raul, and Dean were most likely still trying to catch some sleep. "Though, our reasons share no similarities. Boone likes this time since, from what I've gathered, it provided the perfect opportunities to track slavers across the Mojave and any Legionaries trying to take a gamble at us." Six noticed Arcade's arms cross. "Getting a clear shot isn't something Boone should worry about. He's never missed a shot, from what I've seen anyway. Still, I'll take his word. And as for me, I guess it's around this time that the most crime takes place.''

The Courier's skull titled and eyes widened. ''Wait... one... second." She said, taking unnecessarily long pauses. "You're going to stand there and tell me that there is still crime going on in Freeside?" Was it not such an easy fact to take in? "But I thought I managed to get rid of all the scum living there? And the whole NCR and Kings friendship, making it so even Pacer was willing to cooperate, don't you remember me making that whole situation possible, 'cause I can sure remember it?" Funny, considering she doesn't possess a... well, you'll find out sooner or later. "Violence should cease to exist as a whole thanks to everything I... we've accomplished." Arcade appreciated the quick alteration. I guess Lily is right... I really should start going outside more again.''

''Crime has certainly quivered quite a sum thanks to you and your war against it.'' The Courier smiled and was filled with appreciation from the kind words. ''It's nothing except a few thug attacks. And as for the Kings and the NCR, I can tell they're trying at least trying to maintain as much order as possible. I appreciate that you managed to convince the NCR to let me assist. By the way, I noticed that you're wearing your 'Adventure' armour. Are you finally getting out there again?''

Six's palms rubbed together in a fashion similar to an excited child finally getting that special present they always wanted. ''Of course I am, Arcade. But, as a favor... don't tell Veronica or anyone else that I'm leaving if they ask where I am. I left a note they can all read."

Arcade nodded, though at the same time, not completely understanding why Six couldn't just tell them as she left. "Last night, and outta nowhere I received some random notification on my Pip-Boy." To Arcade it didn't sound like an uncommon situation. "There was no title or even an objective. All it's wants from me is to go over to Primm. I think it's actually inside the Vikki and Vance Casino. Haven't seen Primm in a while, so I'm looking forward to getting to see everyone and the place again. And don't worry, shouldn't take me too long wrapping whatever this is.''

''If my memory is good..." It was. Six knew this as a fact ever since Arcade started reminding Six about every time she made the smallest mistake. "You said the exact same thing when you went to Big Mountain? Not only did you choose to stay there for more than an entire month..." Six couldn't understand why Arcade would complain over such a thing. It was the Big MT's technology that assisted in stopping the Legion. "But as soon as you returned you immediately went straight to the Sierra Madre. And even though it didn't take as much time, we still could've used you."

''Hey, I knew you guys could manage anything the Legion threw at you." Boone was left in charge, so it was easy to see why. "And... those places were extraordinary. Well, the Madre was absolutely more terrifying than it was cool." Everyone in the Companions wanted to at least see Big Mountain for themselves. However, as soon as Six shared information concerning it, the Sierra Madre was ruled out as a possible vacation spot. Which Six found ironic, given that was its original purpose in the Old World.

"Anyway," Six started, maneuvering around Arcade. "I should go. Don't want to give anyone else the chance to interrupt me." She made sure to leave Arcade with the knowledge that concerned who would take charge while she was away. "Before I go, this time I'm leaving you as the temporary leader for the Companions." Arcade's eyes widened. He was never chosen to leave prior to this. It was always Boone or Cass.

"I want you to promise you'll use this position with responsibility?" Even though it sounded like an exaggeration, Six was not joking. Arcade nodded, confirming his promise. "Oh, and could you please tell Raul that I finally manged to get 'em proper access to Hidden Valley?" Arcade smiled and gave another nod. "Thanks. You've no idea the racist idea that those guys can come up with.''

As she left the Lucky 38, and eventually the Strip altogether, the Courier made sure to greet as many faces as she could. An important faces she spotted along the way was Boone's, who was apparently returning from a very unsuccessful mission. In order to make the Companion's greatest and only Sniper's mood improve, Six treated Boone to a quick visit to the Atomic Wrangler.

Aside from consuming the cheap whiskey they sold, neither Boone nor Six possessed any plans on purchasing the other available services. Six was smart enough to know it was an awful idea to taste a Wrangler prostitute. Which was somewhat comical, given the fact she was the one to employ several.

Not far from where they were sitting, Dean was singing on the stage. He didn't actually work there. But shortly after getting so overtly intoxicated, no one could even stop Dean from singing until the inevitable passing out occurred. Also nearby was Cass, who was grooving to Dean's words, even though she couldn't understand a single one. She was also equally smashed to the point where the square people were taking over the world.

Boone, Cass, Dean, and Six ended up staying quite longer than anyone expected them to. Cass ended up tasked with carrying Dean, who did a few too many shots, to the Lucky 38 with Boone providing assistance. Courier Six gave a quick 'goodbye' to the three serving in the Companions.

Primm:

A lot of time passed since the Courier sat foot in Primm. Last time she was there, she managed to find the town a new Sheriff. And judging by the town's new inhabitants, Deputy Weld was doing an excellent job of keeping proper law and order. (DUN-DUN)

''Okay, now let me see.'' Six said whilst she was examining the Pip-Boy. ''It looks like I'm going to need to go inside the Vikki and Vance Casino to find my target. I guess it wouldn't kill me to strike up a friendly chat with good ole' Nash while I'm in there.''

Using that same impressive and equally frightening Strength, the Courier kicked open the Casino's doors. She greeted all of the people inside, shouting, ''Hello to you, my friends! Your Goddess and savior has finally made that promised grand return from all of those ventures against great terror and destruction.''

Johnson Nash chuckled and approached the Courier. He handed Six a small shot glass containing whiskey. ''I'd recognize that wild spirit from anywhere. Well, that and you're the only one I know who sometimes refers to themselves in the third person. How you doing kid? And what brings you back to Primm?''

Six removed her helmet and quickly drained the shot glass. ''First off, third person is the greatest person to use when making a scene. Secondly, I'm doing fantastic. And finally, it's Adventure that guided me to Primm once more my friend. I don't suppose anything interesting has happened in Primm in the last week?''

''Afraid not. This town is now a quiet one, thanks to you. Been getting a lot more visitors though. Especially since you found Vance's Gun not too long ago. Yep, nothing more than a few strange individuals. Well, nowhere near as strange as you are.''

The Courier laughed, the statement containing more truth to it than any other. ''Yeah, yeah. Now, when you say strange individuals. Is there anyone that sticks out more than the others? There is a chance that I'll need to talk with them. Trust me when I say it's really important stuff.''

''You know, now that you mention it. There is this one fellow sitting right over there." He pointed over to where the man was sitting. "If you ask me, seems like someone who will only make trouble. Dressed up in a pretty weird fashion too. He hasn't even ordered anything or played any of the games. Just keeps sitting there while checking the time."

Six looked over to the man. Surely enough his apparel was out of the ordinary, even for the Courier's standards. His outfit looked oddly clean, especially noticeable thanks to it's white coloring. The stranger's hat was covering his eyes while sitting in his chair. The Courier, after having one last talk with Nash, took a seat next to the stranger.

She was hoping to act as the first to make official introductions. But the stranger managed to get the first word out. He started with a sigh of great relief. ''Phew, you certainly took your sweet time getting here, didn't you? I mean, I've sat in this same spot waiting here... longer than I was suppose to! This place is a wreck.''

In a quite confused and even more so annoyed manner, Six said, ''Okay, you're rude. But luckily for you, after making friends with Dean, I think I can get past that... for now anyway. And as for why it took me so long. The Objective didn't exactly come with a suggested time of arrival. How did you even manage to send the Quest to my Pip-Boy in the first place? Hacking it would take a lot of skill.''

Instead of getting the expected answer, Six got a question instead. ''That thing around your wrist? That's a stupid name for it if you don't mind my saying. Not the best of security either." He paused for a moment and sighed. "Do you mind if we just cut to the chase? I want to leave this place as soon as possible. Basically, you're a very interesting and one of a kind person. So much so, that some very good partners of mine are interested in acquiring your services. And with that, they're also interested in this world.''

The mysterious man reached into his outfit and pulled out a small electronic square. He tossed it over to Six. ''I am going to ask you to get it attached to that teleportation gun you carry around. Hopefully that is a simple task that you can manage. Also, so we're on good terms, my name is Roman Torchwick.''

To Roman's surprise, Six began to chuckle. ''And I'm suppose to just do exactly as you say?'' She asked in a voice that didn't cloak any sarcasm. ''What if this is some trick and I end up in the Shadow Realm again? How can you assure me that I'll get even a little bit of an Adventure out of this?''

In a reassuring manner, Torchwick raised his hands in the air. ''Look, I get it, finding some kind of Adventure in your own world isn't an easy thing for you to do anymore. I know that you've explored every location and completed practically everything. Luckily, I can assure you that if you accept my terms there will be a new one just waiting for you to arrive. You might even be able to find a Quest or two.''

The idea of going to an completely unknown world with actual living, and if Six was lucky, friendly people inhabiting it was something that the Courier couldn't manage to comprehend. But at the same time she was so utterly intrigued with the idea that she had no other choice other than to accept.

''Okay, that's good. I guess they did say you're not a complete idiot.'' Someone clearly wanted to get punched in the face. ''Now, don't pull that trigger yet, which I know you're going to do, seeing as you're curiosity always gets the better of you. You should probably know that this is most likely going to be a one way trip. But I'm guessing this isn't the first time you've heard something like that?''

Six smiled and carefully pointed the now upgraded Transportalponder up towards the ceiling of the Casino. Before leaving she wanted to acknowledge this Torchwick's accurate thoughts. ''Buddy, no truer words were ever spoken in the Old World or the New. But all the same... you'll see me again.''

In an instant flash, Six vanished from Primm as well as the Mojave. However, it was not only the Mojave Six vanished from... But from the New World as a whole. Of course, that was something she would only find out when she arrived on the other side. Roman, who was finally able to leave Primm, sighed with solace in his voice. He was previously told that this was going to be the easiest part of the operation.

No one said anything about needing to wait a few extra nights in Primm, forced to listen to idiots ramble on about the NCR, Taxes, and other nonsense Roman couldn't even comprehend. But should the reward and promised future turn out to be anything like the ones that were promised, everything would turn out to be more than worth a little waiting around.

Despite his resentment towards the town, Torchwick, with some leftover caps, opted to spend a few minutes inside the Vikki and Vance Casino. That time was mostly spent towards gambling and socializing with a few more citizens in order to extract some potentially useful information concerning the Courier's companions. Other than a few interesting stories about Six, Roman didn't get anything special.

He also made sure to order some more whiskey, needing a way to pass the time when walking to Vegas other than just stepping on Radroaches that infested the empty Old World streets. After standing up to leave the casino with his newly acquired winnings and whiskey, the long walk to Vegas commenced.

Once Vegas was actually reached, Roman would need to find a way to complete his next task with zero issues or setbacks. Seeing as that task was to convince everyone else in the Companions to join his cause, Torchwick assumed things would more than likely not go so smoothly.
